I tried watching the Senate confirmation hearings for Elena Kagan. I dind’t catch it all. Not even close. I heard some pretty outrageous comments from both Democrats and Republicans and I sure heard some rudeness out of both sides also.

Perhaps the most amazing part of the entire 3 days was getting a bird’s eye view of how really uncomfortable some of these good old boys are with any ethnicity different from them. Jon Stewart noticed the same thing:

Is Stewart being overly sensitive, especially to her ethnicity?

9 Thoughts to “Jon Stewart: Release the Kagan”

  1. Bear

The Committee didn’t have anything to say about Kagan , so they talked to each other about their various positions!

  2. Diversity Gal

    I loved this video:)

Absolutely over sensitive, Moon. Ridiculously so in my estimation. I have made no bones whatsoever on this blog about my own opposition to anti-Semitism in any form, which includes an unflinching support of Israel. But it does not help when some people claim to see an anti-Semitic ghost behind every tree. In my opinion, it only hurts your credibility when you come upon a real live one who needs to be dealt with.

  4. I have often said that about bigotry…those who cry bigotry at every turn aren’t believed when the real thing comes along. On the other hand, Jon Stewart is a comedian, and Jewish himself, and I guess he can saw what he wants.

Maybe Elena will weigh in on this topic when she gets settled in. I did note how uncomfortable some of the Senators appeared to be with Kagan’s ethnicity. Yes, uncomfortable…like a glove that doesn’t quite fit. I still can’t figure out why Kagan was asked where she was on Christmas. Was it an attempt at Senatorial humor?

  5. Wolverine

There is something missing from the clip. I heard a fuller version on the radio. As I recall it, Graham was trying to make a joke which had nothing at all to do with Kagan’s ethnic background. Somehow the joke got a bit screwed up. It was Kagan who inserted her Jewishness into it with the remark about the chinese restaurant because she apparently did not get the drift of Graham’s humor. Graham should leave the jokes to Jon Stewart. When you have to explain your joke after you tell it, you should realize that comedy is not your forte.

Well, whatever he decides to do, Jon Stewart is making it pretty well. I hear he lives in a 6000 square foot, $5.8 million loft in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan. Poor fella had to sell his $3.9 million apartment in Greenwich Village so he could “move on up.” You are putting some expensive humor on this blog, Moon.

  7. Only the best, Wolverine. I just found out a good friend of mine’s mother used to play bridge with mother of Jon Stewart. She was also his guidance counsellor. That’s neat that stewart lives so high on the hog.

Why did Graham want to know where she was on Christmas? What am I missing here? I think I am being unusually obtuse, even for me.

I understood her humor, but not his.

  8. Wolverine

That makes two of us. Right now, for the life of me, I can no longer remember what joke Graham was trying to crack. I just know that it had nothing to do with Kagan’s ethnicity. The joke was on Graham because Kagan got the last laugh and he didn’t.

Now, if we could just “no longer remember” Lindsey Graham……
