Update: 7/21/10
Here are the original videos posted on Fox Nation on Monday 7/19:
The other video can be found at http://www.thefoxnation.com/culture/2010/07/19/caught-tape-obama-official-discriminates-against-white-farmer
end of update
Apparently racism got Ms. Sherrod once again. This is her full speech. Whoever altered the video that went viral on Monday knew exactly what they were doing.
Ms Sherrod’s story is a far cry from the crap someone was feeding us. Let’s see, did Fox News and Andrew Breitbart work this one out together? I need to apologize for jumping the gun and saying this lady needed to be fired. I have not yet heard that apology from the one who distributed the short, altered video. I didn’t hear Fox apologize either. I did hear Glenn Beck pointing fingers at Bad Obama.
Without further ado, the video is long. It should be watched, at least first first 10 minutes.
Listened to the whole speech. Agreed. Immediate rehiring and an apology. Even the white farmer’s family claims to support her.
Also reviewed the Breitbart video excerpt several times again. Not impressed at all with her thinking process on these issues. Have heard much of that reverse-racist nonsense many times before. But, what the hey, they fired the gal for saying what White liberals and politicians have been claiming all along. Cut her a break. Give her the job back. The world has not been shaken by her comments. But the administration firing her so fast, well……a story in and of itself. Bet the Prez wishes he had this one back.
I believe most people would have been fired for that first video that was clearly altered.
Does it concern you that someone would deliberately do that?
Folks talk about fearing the federal governments involvement in their personal lives. Well, here’s a good example that supports that fear. This whole race thing is on edge once again. Sometimes it feels like the 60’s all over again only this time the complaints are coming from the soon to be minority majority, and for good reason. It’s about time the term ‘minority’ be dropped in discussions of race. Just because there are less of one group doesn’t mean they are automatically worse off than others. This will become obvious when whites enter ‘minority’ status. But to be fair, whites should then be granted special consideration, and start forming hundreds of support groups around the country, as has been done by other ‘minority’ groups for the past 100 years. What goes around comes around, but somehow I’m not holding my breath.
Andrew Breitbart says he could care less about Shirley Sherrod. His entire objective was to get the NAACP to stop saying the tea party said the N-word and that they are racist.
I guess he missed that lawn jockey ‘joke’ from a local blogger here in PWC.
http://americanglob.com/2010/07/21/video-andrew-breitbart-on-hannity-show-says-the-issue-is-the-naacp-not-shirley-sherrod/
Breitbart stops short of saying he altered the video. He know of its existence since April so he and his ILK have had quite a while to concoct this scheme.
He obviously deliberately misrepresented to prove his point, regardless of who got hurt in the process.
It is very common for people with fairly high level govt jobs to be removed. Same with private industry if their perceived behavior reflects negatively on the govt or the company.
It appears that Shirley Sherrod was a guest speaker for this NAACP meeting in what appears to be rural Georgia. I feel certain this was a chapter of the NAACP and not national NAACP. Ben Jealous probably had no idea about the meeting any more than RNC knows what is happening at a local Republican function.
I wonder if the nodding in agreement happened before or after Ms Sherrod had told them about her father being killed by white men in 1965?
So no one here, other than W, is going to discuss the forced firing of the person before the ‘facts’ were in? Just going to deflect to the nature of the video? Hmmmmmmm, Obama escapes criticism once again, but then it’s probably Bush’s fault anyway.
If you see a video, do you assume someone altered it? I don’t (I will in the future)
The Obama administration would have been criticized had they not acted on it. You cannot have it both ways.
Private industry would have done damage control also.
Why do you want to criticize Obama for it? Because he is president? Good God, when does it end?
Aren’t you concerned that some woman’s speech was morphed for political advantage and she now doesn’t have a job?
This is all grand political theater by to prove a political point. How about that lawn jockey joke?
Come on MH, are you denying that Bush was held responsible for everything that happened no matter how small? If someone in the Obama administration overreacted, then he shares some of the blame by default just as Bush was held accountable by the Dems on a daily basis. Good God!
SA, I have seen this kind of behavior since Clinton was in office. The players have just changed. It was more of a religious attack during the Clinton era. Not sure who the main attack was from during Bush.
I am not sure where Bush fits in to all of this. I would say…he probably doesn’t.
Just out of curiosity, did you live in the south during the 60’s? No reason to ask other than curiosity.
I don’t know if anyone else finds it intriguing that a doctored video was the only evidence of racism at NAACP that they could come up with.
I am sickened and disgusted by this whole episode. Breitbart is dishonest, Fox News standards of journalism are on par with the National Enquirer, and the Obama Admin meekly caved to pressure.
“If you see a video, do you assume someone altered it? I don’t (I will in the future)”
Would you if it came from Think Progress or MSNBC as well? MSNBC alterted tea party video of a guy carrying a gun at a rally to prove “White rage at a black president”. I don’t recall any outrage from you over that.
http://www.sodahead.com/united-states/msnbc-black-gun-owner-is-white-rage-at-black-president-msnbc-caught-red-handed-faking-news/question-577801/
How about think progress altering tea party video to show the entire movement and members as racist (even throwing in a subliminal show of a Glenn Beck poster for some reason)?
How about the JournoList reporters and bloggers conspiring to paint anyone who brings up Obama and Jeremia Wright as racists durring the election? No problems there huh… just Fox and Brieitbart. Their the evil ones, the ‘left’ would never do such a thing, right?
@Hello
You read too much trash.
Just address the issue on the table and stop trying to drag in every other inequity, real or perceived, to make up for the fact that you cannot justify what has been done.
Start at 16:00 in if you want the short version. Yes, she has absolutely been done a wrong (by the editor, by FOX News and the other news outlets, by the NAACP, and by Dept. of Agriculture as much as anyone). She’s actually standing at th NAACP making a case to treat people equally. Even Michael Moore would blanche at this type of character assasination.
No heros here, except for Ms. Sherrod. She comes out smelling like a rose, and is now famous.
The local NAACP chapter was done a wrong also – and by their national leadership!
I guess trying to think big picture, what can we learn from this … maybe that reverse discrimination is not as prevalent, or acceptable to minorities, as white paranoia/prejudice might lead some of us to think.
This reinforces my belief that white black and other tend to get along and it is mostly the two political parties’ games that work to create friction.
Rick, you are making some excellent points. I am glad you showed up this morning. This entire subject just makes me sick as it continues to unfold. I was all over having her fired too. I feel like a rat.
I am going to defend national NAACP leadership. They probably didn’t even know anything about the dinner. They were given the same information we were.
The villain here, in my mind, is Breitbart. Again. Mr. Pimp my Blog.
The 2 parties and the special interest groups also do a lot to stir the pot towards discord.
I expect more than a few people are delighted that Ms Sherrod is not too happy with the NAACP or the White House.
The whole thing makes me sick.
Brietbart’s story that he was sent only the edited clips is believable.
The media’s decision to air them is reasonable. She is a public figure by virtue of this being a speech given atan NAACP chapter. To the media’s credit, they found the white farmer pretty quickly.
The next step is to let her or the local NAACP chapter explain themselves.
The only people I heard condemn her without waiting for explanation were the NAACP and Dept. of AG. You and I I don’t blame. We assumed that the NAACP and Dept. of AG. did due dilligence before throwing her over the side of the ship.
Moon, I have no problem saying that this woman should not have been fired nor should the NAACP have put out their original statement. However, that was VERY poor vetting by them, they simply dropped the ball in this case plain and simple. FOX news should have looked deeper into the story and I have a feeling you may see someone later tonight like Bill or Glenn say as much.
I’m not trying to change the subject or story at all, but your outrage is completely one-sided. The left (bloggers, ‘news’ channels, reporters) do this on a daily basis. They even conspire to get their attacks all on the same page (JournoList) but you seem to not mind wrongs just as long as their against the right. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
What I think the ‘villain’ Breitbart was trying to expose (and should have said so from the beginning) was in the video the NAACP members in the audience reacted to the discrimination with laughter and approval. Which is clear in the video.
Thing is, hello, they were laughing with the storyteller but not at all laughing at the idea that bigotry was right or justified. If you watch the whole video you’ll see that the crowd knew exactly what she was getting at and agreed with her completely about using class not race as a dividing mark.
Breitbart lost a lot of credibility on this. He owes her an apology. However, she was not the example or target. He was using that short clip not to show that SHE was prejudiced but that the NAACP was appreciative of her desires to screw over the farmer……
From Gateway Pundit: http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/
From Ben Jealous:
We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.
Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.
The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action.
We thank those who brought this to our national office’s attention…
But, President Jealous forgot to mention one thing.
He was in the audience.
If you listen to the Sherrod’s speech at Annual NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner in Georgia in March you’ll here her thank her guests and…
“The President who is with us tonight.”
The NAACP recognizes no racism except white racism. From welcoming Farrakhan and Sharpton to lobbying to get the charges against the Black Panthers dropped, they attempt to live up to their organization’s name.
Ms Sherrod has been treated shabbily by all, including those that she trusted. She stated in an interview this morning that she doesn’t know if she wants to go back to her job because they will treat her differently.
All I know is that, in my unlawyerly opinion, that there’s a suit somewhere in this.
The crowd got slandered too. Whoever pulled those clips out and sent them acted with real malice.
I agree with Cargo, I like Breitbart but I do think he lost some credibility and should apologize to Ms. Sherrod. Breitbart has brought some good issues up that MSM has completely ignored and nobody would have known about if not for him. This kinds of taints that trend and hopefully he corrects it.
@Rick Bentley
Totally agree. The crowd was going along with the story teller. It is welcoming and a form of audience participation. Its also very southern.
Cargo, I don’t think Ben Jealous was there. It could have been the local chapter president.
I am angriest at Breitbart. He sat right there and said to Hannity that he didn’t care about Shirely Sherrod. What a bastard. He almost salivated over his coup.
This was the ‘evil’ Glenn Becks reaction to the whole story: http://media.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/43271/
Besides Breitbart the NAACP and the Obama admin owe her an apology most of all. The NAACP had the entire tape the whole time, why didn’t they look into it before releasing their comment? Why no vetting by the admin? Shame on them both!
Did you see him the day before? (Evil Glenn Beck) He did a 180.
I don’t think Glenn Beck is evil. I think he is a jerk and a bad actor.
Hello, do you understand anything at all about the NAACP? Do you realize there is a National Organization and out there across America there are many chapters? I seriously doubt that National NAACP had a video of a local Georgia chapter’s dinner and speaker. You are going to need to back off trying to demonize the NAACP. I doubt if that local NAACP knew what hit them. Their members were also victimized by something much larger than they are.
I am concerned that there is so much collatoral damage because of this pissing contest between the Tea Parties (that have no head) and the NAACP. A lot of innocent people have gotten hurt in all this. You know, if someone says that the tea party is racist, who does that hurt? Shrug it off. If someone says that a speaker is a racist and alters a video, that hurts a lot of people, especially if that person is up doing a testimonial about getting past black and white issues.
Hell, if Breitbart had recorded Farrikan, then who cares. If he had recorded the new Black Panthers, who cares. But some poor woman out trying to talk to a group of concerned citizens? Give me a break. He misrepresented her for his own gain.
What this boils down to is more proof that the administration and heads of special intrest groups like the (NAACP) only care about thier image and how it effects the amount of money/power they will recieve in the future. Everyone jumped the shark and threw Ms. Sherrod under the bus in a matter of seconds without any kind of investigation into the authenticity of the video.
Rick Said…
“This reinforces my belief that white black and other tend to get along and it is mostly the two political parties’ games that work to create friction.”
absolutly correct! The Government, Special Interest, Political Parties and Global Conglomerates; The don’t give a F%^K about you! All they want is the money in your pocket and if playing these mind games with you can get that money any faster, they’ll do whatever it takes.
The D’s and R’s are just 2 diffrent vampire heads attached to the same greedy stomach.
Stop giving them money and they will die.
For what it’s worth, I have FOX News on right now as I work and they are not hesitating to correct the misimpression, and are playing new excerpts from her speech.
“I seriously doubt that National NAACP had a video of a local Georgia chapter’s dinner and speaker” – really?? So what your trying to tell me is that the NAACP doesn’t have access to or can’t somehow get the full video of a local NAACP fundraiser? That’s rich Moon… 🙂
I especially like how the NAACP is now blaming Britebart for their handling of the situation instead of taking any responsibility what so ever, they did nothing wrong. How about the administration, I suppose they had absolutely no way of getting the video either huh?
While we are talking about the administration, they are doing a horrible job of damage control. I was hoping that the administration would back track on their needless firing of Sherrod but instead they praised the decision to fire her. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up 🙂
Their reason for patting themselves on the back… because at least they acted quickly. Wow, that is great news! The Obama administration condemns and forces someone to resign without even looking into the matter and that is a good thing?
(FYI – this is not from a right wing site)http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2010/07/21/white_house_praises_sherrod_response
They couldn’t help but note though the humor in the NAACP referncing “FOX News” in its statement about being “snookered” when in fact the only people with a copy of the complete tape yeterday was the NAACP itself.
Hello, turn around time….you have heard of that. Of course they got their hands on it…where do you think the accompanying video is from on this thread. However, people can’t just pull video out of their ears on a dime.
I blame Breitbart. he has a track record and he said he didn’t care about her. He engages in politics of mass destruction without regard to whom he injures along the way.
@ Rick, where was Faux News on Monday and Tuesday? Blasting Ms. Sherrod. They got in the act.
So did we.
Meanwhile FOX News online is onto another hot story that I don’t see on CNN – http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/07/21/stone-age-carving-ancient-dildo/?test=latestnews
Sorry, for some reason the link I posted of a White House official praising the decision to fire Ms. Sherrod didn’t work in my last post:
http://www.salon.com/news/white_house/index.html?story=/politics/war_room/2010/07/21/white_house_praises_sherrod_response
Again Moon, you still have yet to respond about how the White House handled the situation and how they continue to handle it. I suppose Fox News forced them to fire her? Wow, I didn’t know that they had so much power.
Then again, this administration is pretty swift to act of race issues they don’t have the full facts of… remember “the police acted stupidly” after he admitted he didn’t know much about the case?
Apparently, Ms. Sherrod, though the victim in this case, is not completely devoid of racism:
http://www.riehlworldview.com/carnivorous_conservative/2010/07/breitbarts-landmark-video-and-a-postracial-america.html
Excerpt:
In both the full video and a 3 minute excerpt I produced, Sherrod labels the entire Republican Party racist, claiming they simply can’t stand to see a black man in the White House. She also characterizes totally legitimate political opposition to ObamaCare from average citizens as mean and ultimately racist in the end. Had some previous Bush appointee called the Democrat Party a bunch of race-baiting hucksters, or poverty pimps – putting black citizens in that camp, too – there is no way said official would be able to keep their position. Yet, that is precisely what Sherrod did, only it was Republicans and her political opponents she so openly smeared.
***Information Request***
Wolfie, I am asking the question because I haven’t been able to find a video in which Glenn Beck had taken a position against Ms. Sherrod so I was wondering if you have anything to show what led to this quote from your post in post #28–“Did you see him the day before? (Evil Glenn Beck) He did a 180.”
All I found was this and he implied this was his first statement on the matter, he didn’t even know of the video until after the previous night’s show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48e7lY2VJwA
I am asking because I never have watched Glenn Beck until I looked that this video so, as you know, I like to look at things with my own eyes before I formulate a position. I do find it strange that the strong comments and actions were done when it appears that the full video was readily available due to its quick release.
Rez, I might have been wrong that he blasted on Monday. I think it was another foxie and not Beck. I do know that on Tues. he was in defense mode.
The PERFECT liberal argument. “Don’t throw all these FACTS at me!, just bow down in shame before my liberal-ness”. What a joke.
Did I get a chance to mention how very clever the whole “Faux News” thing is? You replace the word Fox with Faux, meaning “false”, didn’t you? It’s sublime!
Breitbart is only a blogger, free to post as he wishes. I blame the folks who jumped to conclusions and “acted stupdly” (to coin a phrase from someone who should know better) to throw this woman under the bus without knowing all of the facts. Now the administration, the NAACP and the Dept of Ag have egg on their collective faces for using this woman to prove how “postracial” they are.
That’s fine. I remember being wrong once about 40 years ago myself 🙂
Breitbart had a copy Monday and Tuesday. He just chose not to show all of it.
Snicker. I will savor the words. It really all started blending together sometime Monday. I thought he had railed. He said he didn’t mention it so I will believe him.
I have heard at least 10 different stories tonight on Faux News. I flip the channel and I hear 10 more from other stations.
I am going on record to say I don’t know who did what to whom.
What part of this story is NOT a total set up. Either way, Obama was screwed. He “defends” her in the feeding frenzy and he is RACIST because he is defending a black woman, he “fires” her and is an idiot for NOT properly vetting the full video. Outrageous, the whole entire fiasco, and Obama should have done his proper due diligence in determining the facts, but mostly, the out of control right wing attack dog make up story bullshit is the main “character” at fault. I am so disgusted with this whole event.
Fox News picked this story up like a rabid dog in heat, along with all the other right wing conservative “media” outlets.
Andrew Breitbart should have to reimburse the taxpayers for all the time and effort the government wasted the past few days because of his twisted efforts. Most journalists get canned for publishing false or misleading information whether it is deliberate or just through negligence and laziness. He either edited the film to suit his purposes or made no effort to discover the real context of the snippets. Mr. Breitbart clearly suffers from an acute rectal-cranial impaction and should be refudiated.
Moe,
hahahahaha “refudiated”……………………… another classic example of what’s wrong with who is in a “leadership” role for uber conservatives!
How many time has Al Sharpton railed against certain people who were falsely accused, and yet he has never offered an apology. This outrage is somewhat hypocritical when viewed in that context.
Elena,
Did you see where the “Dear Leader” compared herself to Shakespeare saying he made up new words, too? Then she tweeted saying she was headed to Kodiak, “America’s largest island.” America’s largest island is Hawaii (the big island) and the “Dear Leader” began her college career in Hawaii. So, in the course of two days she flunks English and American geography and she does it publicly on Tweeter: no wonder it took her 6 years and 5 colleges to earn a degree in … wait for it … journalism (isn’t that the careerfield she loathes?).
Actually Morris she wasn’t too far off. America’s second largest island is Kodiak, and if she was just referring to the continental US, then she was correct.
