Dr. Laura Schlessinger, the talk radio host, apologized and decided to retire from her conservative radio program after using the N-word on the air 11 times in 5 minutes, while talking to a female black caller.
According to Huffington Post:
Dr. Laura Schlessinger announced Tuesday night that she would end her radio show following her N-word rant last week.
“My contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year and I’ve made the decision not to do radio anymore,” she told Larry King. “The reason is I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I’m sort of done with that.”
Dr. Laura emphasized that she is “not retiring” but rather just ending her radio show.
“I’m not retiring, I’m not quitting, I feel energized actually,” she said. “Stronger and freer to say the things that I believe need to be said for people in this country.”
(See video from the Larry King Show below)
Palin tweeted her support of Dr. Laura on Twitter, telling Dr. Laura, ‘Don’t Retreat…Reload!’ (Steps aside bc her 1st Amend.rights ceased 2exist thx 2activists trying 2silence”isn’t American, not fair”) The second twitter round that followed said “Dr.Laura=even more powerful & effective w/out the shackles, so watch out Constitutional obstructionists. And b thankful 4 her voice,America!”
What IS SHE THINKING? Constitutional obstructionists? If I voice objections over someone, on the airwaves, saying the N word 11 times in 5 minutes then I am a constitutional obstructionists? This woman is beginning to make Dan Quayle look like a brain trust. I used to think Sarah Palin was just not my cup of tea. I don’t care much for cutesy, winking women who have nothing more to say than sound bites. Now I just think she is dangerously ignorant and not qualified to hold public office beyond her own home town. Obviously being governor of her state was also too much of a challenge.
Does Palin just not get that there are some things you don’t say in public? Dr. Laura knew she did wrong. She apologized.
You see, even though she has the right to her verbal opinions based on the Constitution sometimes society just won’t let you get away with it. I just wish the pressure applied to ALL equally, but it doesn’t.
If you actually hear the excerpts …
Dr. Laura was being a jerk. The woman she was talking to told her that her use of th word offended her, so then Dr. Laura proceeded to intentionally use it several more times just to be jerky.
I support anyone’s ability to use the word in context, but not their ability to use it to be a jerk to people.
Palin’s commenting is a great example of why the woman would probably be a horrid President. She’d make something like Gates/Crowley look smaller than a gnat’s penis.
Racism and 1st amendment rights to free speech seem to be the most often abused complaints these days.
Palin has every right to say what she said. And I have ever right to say that her words are just another example of why she is unfit for national office. A mayor in a small bo-hick town in Alaska is fine. She can get by with saying incredibly stupid things like that as a mayor.
@Rick–bwaaaahahahahahaha. gnat’s penis?
And I agree. I support anyone reading Huck Finn aloud. Dr. Laura was being an….errr jerk, as usual. She often is. But is has made her rich and bought her a lot of botox treatments.
Always loved this line in Miles Davis’ autobiography : “Now sometimes Mingus would be talking about some heavy s***. But sometimes it was smaller than a mosquito’s peter”.
Sarah Palin and Corey Stewart – please just shut up and go away.
“Stronger and freer to say the things that I believe need to be said for people in this country.”
When has “Dr.” Laura ever held back before?
I despise the woman and her supercilious and stone-age thinking, and her complete lack of compassion for women caught in circumstances where they could not live the idyllic “my kid’s mom” life she would beat them over the head with when they called. A woman caught in a bad marriage?–“Well, YOU picked the guy!” Just once I wish the caller would say, “Bite me!”
Ironically, Dr Laura was quite loudly critical of Palin’s having kids during middle age and running for VP at the same time.
The good “doctor” seemed to be oblivious to the fact that her radio program, her writing and her promotional activities must have taken some time away from raising her kid.
I hate to say it but my wife had TMZ on last night and I watched the snippet on Dr. Laura proclaiming her 1A rights and then they talked about her 10-15 years ago trying to negotiate a contract with CBS whereby Howard Stern wouldn’t be allowed to say anything about her.
The problem with people who assert 1A rights is that they don’t realize it goes BOTH ways. 🙂
And I am going to agree with almost everyone this morning.
You know, the only people I have known to like Dr. Laura were men. It must be that caveman treatment of the little woman. She really is swimming in Rush waters most of the time.
Wow, Laura should have phoned somebody for advice before
she decided to say that word.
Moon,
I don’t know of a single man that even listens to Dr. Laura. The few times I’ve scanned past her show, she has women on. No men, usually. So SOME women must like her. That said, the only woman that liked Rush, that I personally knew, was my mother. But some women do like Rush. Heck, he even got married again…..
Ahhhhh, Moonhowlings and Ahhhhhriana Huffington (daaaahhhhhhhhling!) jumping on Sarah Palin! It’s like going home after a long road trip!!
Larry King has crossed over to Huffington? Hmmmm…..
Sarah Palin undoes herself.
I use Huffington a great deal of the time. Huffington, Richmond Times Dispatch, Washington Post, and Politico. Oh, did I mention I often use Fox and Msnbc?
I will continue to jump on Sarah Palin unless she wises up and stops saying stupid things.
@Moon-howler
I wasn’t complaining! I said “it’s like coming home”!
I sure hope Sarah Palin becomes the Republican nominee for President in 2012. Obama will win in a landslide.
@Starryflights Are you saying that the only way he can win is if what you perceive is an utter incompetent runs against him? That’s not saying much about what you think of Obama.
Of course, Palin had no less executive experience than Obama going into 2008.
I am not sure that experience is a big plus. Hopefully a president surrounds himself with people with high levels of expertise. I say he only because to date, all have been hes.
I hope she doesn’t become the nominee. I would hate to think she is the best the Republicans have to offer. I have never heard her say anything of substance. You cannot run the country on sound bytes.
Uh, it’s pretty obvious that Palin still has more leadership experience than Obama will ever have.
Only in your dreams and fantasies, Slowpoke. Palin is a good cheerleader with little common sense. Being a cheerleader is not what most of us want for an elected official.
Yeah, but what we got is nothing short of genius! Oh, I forgot, it’s all Bush’s fault!
No one is saying anything is Bush’s fault. That is just right wing crap. All Obama was saying is he inherited a 2 wars and and economy that was very close to being in a depression.
He can’t make it all go away on a dime. For a person who started out being on the negative side of neutral about Obama, some of you have really made me a serious defender of the man because of this kind of nonsense.
