I meant to post this yesterday. King managed to capture the moral imperative of the day. Perhaps this is a good time to compare and contrast.

Yesterday’s rally cannot be ignored. There was relevancy there that we have not yet realized. Probaby the participants have not yet realized it either. There are some winds of change that might not be in the best interests of anyone. Time will tell. Meanwhile, read Bill4Dogcatcher for some insight from a moderate conservative first hand witness.

9 Thoughts to “The Real “I Have a Dream Speech” August 28, 1963”

  1. From cbsnews.com

Beck’s statement that he is reclaiming the civil rights movement, Sharpton told CBS News’ Wyatt Andrews, reminds him of earlier claims that King was a communist.

“When Dr. King and others came here in ’63 to ask the government to protect the civil rights of people and the economic rights of people, they came to ask government to protect them from local states that were robbing them of economic and civil rights,” said Sharpton, who is hosting a rally of his own tomorrow. “…Glenn Beck is coming here to ask government to leave us alone, so he’s trying to reverse what King did and there are those of us who are not going to allow that to happen.”

Does the accusation of communist sound familiar? Has it been soften a little with the word ‘socialist’ in recent times?

Many who espouse states rights must realize that civil rights and economic rights would have never come to pass under the states. King came to ask the federal government for protection FROM the states.

How would King’s dream been fulfilled without the protection of the federal govt?

Were the states in the right back in the early 60’s?

Well, I have returned from my man-cave weekend only to read a lot of crap here about how awful it is for Glen & Co. to use the backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial to talk about restoring the American principles of goverment and economic resurgence. Wow, how revolutionary! Apparantly nobody tought to reserve the Memorial for MLK celebrations – or I am sure the NPS would have prevented it. (you do know that every image of MLK, every bust and every use of the dream speech is patented and goes to the family) I mean equality under the law is such a radical and dangerous thing to advocate.

Attempts to connect the Glen rally to the arguement of 60’s era states rights and George Wallace is race baiting at its worst. As best I can tell, Glen has argued for the principles expressed by of MLK and asked us to get back to those principles not the gimme gimme socialism of today. I think a clarification might be in order Moon.

Sharpton is the utimate ambulance chaser. He’s worse than Sen. Shummer when it comes to seeking a camera. His anti- MLK — no, his revisionist MLK principles demonstration was embarassing and revealing.

PWC, it’s been amusing watching the twisted arguements against Beck for the last week. I just would log in to get a taste, snicker or chuckle and ask myself, “Is this for real?”

Hope you get to the part about the left wanting an assasination and then it being debated.. Makes me shudder. Make’s a great case study on emotional vs. logical arguements.

    Welcome back.

    @marinm

Thanks Marinm. My crew and I raised $20 K for Britteny’s Hope – a private children’s special needs facility in PA over the weekend.

Wicked cool. TY for your service to the community.

  7. TP, sometime when you aren’t twisting my words, tell us about Britteny’s hope.

Marin, no one debated an assassination and you know it. No one wanted an assassination. I have asked that the topic not be brought up. If the FBI shows up at my door, I will give them the entire damn computer. Expect a knock at your door also.

Let’s see, TP, there are no threads on Sharpton. He isn’t a favorite of mine either. However, he is still a relevant figure among black Americans. Secondly, no one here has race baited.

Beck is who is discussing the I have a Dream speech. He is who is claiming the civil rights movement. Why would you accuse us?

I guess the question becomes, was it good taste for Beck to grab the weekend and to keep it and put his own interpretation on it? What is permissible/legal is not always in the best of taste. That is the question. What do you think? good taste or questionable taste?

Secret Service investigates those types of cases and may bring in the FBI as needed. Or, the FBI may try to grandstand to increase funding. Either way, you’ll be fine as your only a service provider and as soon as it was mentioned you went after it.

Another admin did not and seemed to almost agree. But, that’s upto a readers interpretation.

Worse case I can put in a call and see if I still have some friends in that department. I trained a few of them. 😉 Mainly to go after ped’s but crime is crime. I miss that job.

I don’t see anything good or bad about the date he picked. If nothing else it demonstrates that civil rights is not solely a black or brown thing. It’s a human thing and that we’re all in it together. I think that’s something we can all agree on.

And, as required by my sponsors.. God Bless Ms. Sarah Palin. 🙂

  9. marin, actually, others can watch a blog. That’s all I am going to say. I just don’t want to deal with it. Why attract attention? I don’t want the FBI at my door. More than that, I just don’t want to discuss assassination. I have lived through too many that consumed a nation. I am probably weird about it. I remember right where I was when JKF was asssassinated. So can most people who were alive then. (and have memory of it happening)

Elena is entitled to her own opinion. She isn’t agreeing. She is talking about setting the tone for violence.

I said the 8-28 grab was insensitive and divisive. I didn’t say it was good or bad. As the Mosque near ground zero is insensitive and divisive, so is 8-28.

I don’t give a rat’s ass what Glenn Beck said about it yesterday. That isn’t what he has been saying on such subjects. A year ago he accused the President of the United States of being a racist. There are many other examples that disqualify him from being our racial emissary.

I might be sorry I asked this, but what is it about Sarah Palin that you feel qualifies her for national office?
