106 Thoughts to “Open Thread Mid-week September 8”

  1. Thank you Rod.

    We could end all wars instantly if everyone lived by the one common tenant found in all the major religions of the world: the Golden Rule, as Christians call it–do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

    Treat other people as you would like to be treated. It isn’t easy to do.

  2. Rod,
    You’re right about the two commandments by Christ. I was only applying the one that might be applicable to law.

    As to the selfless acts….I fully believe that there are amazing charitable people throughout the world. Most people of any and all religions just want to live their lives and are willing to help their fellow man.

    Worldly greed does indeed generate strife. Usually greed for power.

    However, I don’t understand your last comment. Higher rate of consumption? The higher the rate of consumption does not cause a fight. Its the scarcity of, or restricted access to, resources that causes strife. The US has one of, if not the highest, rate of consumption, I guess. However one can only have such a lifestyle in a life of plenty, both politically, spiritually and materially. If either on of those “legs” is missing, strife will occur. Look at the areas of the world that have conflict or abuse.

    As to few remaining resources, I don’t get that either. Where in the world is a resource poor area that is not that way due to the local power situation? Why is Venezuela a “poor” country? Why did the Ethiopians starve? Why are the Palestinians shown as poor and starving? Because their governments caused it to be that way.

    @hello

    Wow! I wish they had come up with that one a few years back. My guess is that we might have gotten rid of more than a few liberals for what was directed at Bush.

    Sounds like a new BHO standard to me. A threat was always taken seriously but this is crazy!

  4. @Cargo, I have to disagree re Palestine. Which government were you referring to?

    Palestine doesn’t have statehood. Its sort of difficult to talk about its government. Palestine, in my view, has a very complicated set of problems. It has been a protectorate for at least half of a century. Its lands were taken to form Israel. Many of the Palestinian people live as refugees in other countries. It isn’t a one sided good/bad discussion.

    The other Arab nations could do a lot more to help the Palestinian people. Many have chosen to rable rouse and keep the Palestinians poor and in refugee status in order to keep things stirred up and with a common enemy.

    There are definitely 2 sides of the Palestine question.

  5. Both Hamas and Fatah steal the money from their own people. Hamas can’t do basic infrastructure, but there are malls and luxuries for tourists and missiles for Hamas. Fatah may not base their governing philosophy on religion, but, they lost to Hamas in Gaza because of corruption. On the other side, Palestinian problems are also caused by Israel’s need for security. So again, the problems are caused by a lack of freedom.

    Then, on top of that, any culture that worships death, that idolizes suicide bombers, and have families that hope that their children grow up to blow up, has terrible internal problems. Again, a lack of spiritual wealth. Another leg, gone.

    Imagine the gains if Palestine shunned Israel. If they did nothing TO Israel and got nothing from them, they would gain. If the Palestinians would lay down their arms, peace would reign. If the Israelis lay down their arms, millions die.
