Huge fire in the City. The rovering reporter has told me it is a house in Sumner Lake. Perhaps even more than one house since those homes are very close together.
Even up here in WestGate you can smell the fire and still see smoke. I hope everyone is safe. I saw Stonewall & Gainesville Fire Depts. heading towards the fire.
Channel 4 is reporting that three townhomes are on fire, and it is now a three alarm fire. No word as to if the houses were occupied at the time.
If this is where its being reported and the satellite image is correct, it is yet more evidence of the danger of “small lot singles” development, you know the kind that PWC is so fond of. This is what happens when you build houses twelve feet apart. Although some jurisidictions have increased the minimum setbacks per fire department recommendations (and I know of at least one in PWC), the county still lets them build these high priced tinder boxes almost on top of each other despite multiple instances of fires jumping from unit to unit. STUPID!!!!!
Mom,
These houses are called single family. They are nothing more than townhouses seperated by a few feet and no fire wall. Then the siding of these homes is an accelerant when a fire starts. They say all three homes are a total loss. Just more piss poor planning practices.
Ahh, but does say wonders about the construction lobby and their impact on building codes.
You aren’t talking about Dawson’s Landing are ya? The houses at Sumner Lake are even closer together than those.
Why are these inferior products available for sale, let alone be used to build a house?
The ones I’m looking at are on Tillett Loop which I guess is the right place. They are typical small lot single family homes, a development type that I believe first started apearing a little over a decade ago. It would appear the lobbyists had the IBC changed to allow for this type of development. Many of the “cluster” developments in PWC wouldn’t work without it as it allows smaller square footage for the lot sizes in certain zoning districts. Fortunately, the fire departments got wise to the dangers (although too late for many whose homes had already burned) and many jurisdictions have increased the minimum side set backs to prevent this type of fire. Too bad PWC doesn’t have the stones to upset certain land use lawyers and amend our zoning to increase our setbacks.
I meant Dawson’s Landing was the subdivision in the county that had changed for the set backs.
If they insist on having homes built so close together, then why not mandate sprinklers in those new homes being constructed twenty feet from the next?
Yes, Tillett Loop is in Sumner Lake. These “cluster homes” are “cluster f*&^%s”. Now, now, you know we can’t go upsetting the those land use lawyers. I wonder if they are the list of “good guys” like Brookfield Homes is according to some. 🙂
Don’t know about that list, but I’m sure their playlist has “Smoke on the Water”, sorry, cruel joke.
It is a beautiful, well-cared for community. The houses seem very nice, just too large for the lots they are on.
Laf, Alanna saw Gainesville speeding up the road. I expect Owl put in an appearance also.
What does a three alarm fire mean in this area? I know there is no nationwide standard.
Teresa Lewis has a date with destiny in a few minutes, if it hasn’t happened already.
Another example of greed on a very simple level.
She has indeed been exectued. First time in almost 100 years The Commonwealth has executed a woman. The sex of the criminal, matters NOT to me. Needless, to say this execution had it’s share of protesters, like all the others.

TV said 9:13. I agree with Lafayette. I could care less if she is a female. I also don’t care if she is handicapped, near handicapped or whatever. She is a killer.
Its said that she had an IQ of 72. I don’t think that’s handicapped. I mean, if Maxine Waters can be a Congresswoman………
@Moon-howler
RULE OF LAW, RULE OF LAW!!!
@lafayette
POINT OF ORDER, POINT OF ORDER!!!
@Cargo, I am watching Maxine Waters as you speak….immigration sub committee.
Maxine got strong competition from lungren for being a d….ooops, sorry.
I agree. 72 isn’t handicapped. Close, but no banana.
Maxine Waters is an embarassment … has been for a long time … reflects badly on every organization that she’s a member of.
So, the Dream Act didn’t pass … and Greg asks on the dark board, would this kid have been eligible for it if he hadn’t decided to rape his foster mother at knifepoint? http://www.examiner.com/immigration-reform-in-national/illegal-alien-convicted-of-raping-his-foster-mom-virginia
No, he wold not have been eligible for the Dream Act, which will pass eventually. The Dream Act requires kids to stay out of trouble. I read that story last night in the Richmond Times Dispatch. Poor woman. She had taken the kid in off the streets.
Greg will always put his spin on things. Rather than telling the nuts and bolts of each bill, he has to describe the bill through the extremes, the outliers. And yet his followers blindly continue to be cheerleaders for misinformation. Sorry, did I say cheerleaders? I meant minions. The ranks of the minions have sorta thinned lately. Too bad he still has the dude who lives mid-county who was facinated with women’s bodily functions.
Someone mentioned the lost generation or something regarding the stock market from 2001-2010.
I think that is not a good name….there was plenty of money to be made during that time period….if you got out before the crash.
Another nice day in the markets…choppy since Monday. I like the week to finish up with charging bulls.
Why will the Dream Act pass eventually? If it has to be attached to an unrelated Defense bill, then there is no political will nor call to pass it separately.
Most Americans do not want illegal aliens to get a jumpstart to citizenship over the law abiding immigrants. No plan by the government to fastrack illegal alien citizenship will be workable. How does one verify how long an illegal alien has been in country? Check his falsified papers? Any amnesty or “pathway” will encourage MORE illegal aliens to come here.
The Dream Act will eventually pass because it is the right thing to do. It is unAmerican to hold the sins of the parents against children. Americans generally want to do the right thing.
Orrin Hatch first introduced a similar bill. That is before it got to be a hot bed of political emotionalism.
Someone was singing the praises of Andrew Jackson. I can’t find it now. He was a bastard and a bad redneck. He practiced genocide. He makes me sick. I used to like him until I found out his real role in the Trail of Tears. That part was white washed when I was growing up.
School records would verify how long a kid has been in country. I am not sure we can say most without verifying how many ‘most’ is. I think many might be more accurate.
Since most Americans have no way of telling if an immigrant is in the country legally, their opinon becomes fairly meaningless because we are talking abstracts. Those who dislike the idea of people being in the country illegally should want to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
I think the government (there’s that G word again) has every right to know who is in our country. Funny that those with complete distain for the government and its power want to give it all up over this subject.
FYI: The market had a great day and is on target to the have the best Sept.
since 1939. ( W’s last day in office the Dow was 8,218 and falling, today it
closed at 10,860 and is rising).
OHS! Go Eagles!
Today’s move was surprising, I had thought we’d have a move back to S&P 1115 before the next push up and got caught a little flat footed. Every hedgie and their cat is going to be juicing the market next week to pump end of quarter performance, so I’ll be really surprised if we don’t get a gap and go on Monday. If we can clear 1150 on volume then I’ll be looking for 1065 and past that 1080-1085. Watch the action in AAPL, NFLX, CRM, WYNN, CAT, DE, JOYG, BUCY, FCX, PCLN, VMW, FFIV – if they start to look toppy it’s probably time to pull the ripcord.
On the other hand copper is positively ripping higher, and even looks like it may break out. If it does, buckle up because the equitiy market is going along for the ride.
If we don’t get a gap up or we get one and it doesn’t hold prepare for some choppy action around the 1150 level, as that’s quite a significant level.
The bull case here is simple as the Fed just gave you the steal sign. If the economy gets better it’s good for the markets. If the economy doesn’t get better they’re going to purchase assets and flood the system with more free money and that’s good for the markets. (personally I don’t buy that last part but that’s the argument).
The bear case here is that there are structural problems with unemployment and entitlements and you can’t have inflation like the Fed wants without wage growth.
Next week will be an interesting battle between fear and greed, that’s for sure.
I would prefer a charging bull to a growling bear.
I sure wish I had bought nflx when it was nada.
You’ll probably get your chance to buy NFLX on sale in the near future. Valuations don’t really make sense but it sure does have the MoMo. I usually move in and out of that puppy several times a day. It has a little bit of support around 145-146 so you can start to nibble at it there. It has a bit more support at 136.5 so you can take a bigger bite there if so inclined. It has really stout area of support from 122-125 which I do not expect to be violated on a normal correction, but if we have something more than a normal correction look out below because the next stop is 100. If you want to start building a position that you want hanging around in your retirement portfolio I would start by selling the 125 put and I would do this every month until I got the shares put to me (and I believe this stock WILL see 125 again during the next six months). That way, you can sit there and collect the cash generated by selling the put while you wait for the stock to come to you.
Any such advice on cmg?
MH loves her apple. Any bets on it hitting 300 before Halloween? End of the month?
I don’t know what ‘selling the 125 put’ means. I think that is way beyond my skill set level. I don’t do options.

Go Eagles!!!
Congratulations Eagles!
I’d sure like to know why the markets are so happy. They’re seeing something I’m not seeing.
They have been happy since spring 2009. Biggest stock growth in decades.
CMG looks a little bit tired here. By tired I mean that price is hitting a new high, but other measures of relative strength and momentum are not which is as we say in the business a “negative divergence.” There’s a nice looking base around 165, but it’s a bit suspect since it was put in on relatively low volume. Major league support for the stock is down at 150, with another speed bump at 140. I think this one will hold 150 on any normal pullback. The numbers here look good, but remember that at the end of the day this is a company that sells burritos and they have a lot of competition.
AAPL on the other hand looks strong, no strike that very strong. In fact, I’d give even odds of it not pulling back much at all if the market goes into correction. If it does where could it go? Well there’s a pretty good base at 265 and beyond that a wave of very strong support at 250. Anthing below 250 should be considered a gift and anything below 240 is back up the truck and buy time. I’d say odds of AAPL 300 buring the next two weeks are 85%.
Here’s something to consider when owning something like AAPL. This is a company of which perfection is expected. They are executing flawlessly. They are delivering huge growth. They’re going to crush their numbers. And everyone knows it. Everyone owns it and everyone loves it. It counts for 20% of the index performance. It’s the kid in class that always makes an “A+.” What happens if on their earnings call they come out and say that their margins have slipped by one tenth of one percent? Well, it trades very quickly back down to 250 in about 30 seconds is what. Take a look at what happened to GOOG when they reported their quarter back in January for reference.
Options aren’t complicated. The fact you know a put is an option means you know enough to use them. Let’s look at a practical example: suppose you wanted to add 1000 shares to your AAPL position but you don’t want to buy it here. You sell 10 Nov 270 contracts to someone for a total of 6700.00. If the stock trades back to support at 265 you now own the shares from 270 down but you actual per share cost basis is 263.3 (the 270,000 you laid out for the shares – the 6700 you took in premium selling the put). No you’re already sitting on a gain with the shares at 265 so you decide you’d be willing to sell at 280. You turn around and sell the 280 call for 9000.00 and now your cost basis on the shares is 254.3. If the stock trades to 280+ you get your shares called away for a tidy profit. If the stock does nothing or doesn’t get to 280 you keep the 9000 bucks in premium. If the stock goes south you have protection from losses all the way down to major support in the 250ish range.
Bottom line is you’re leaving money on the table if you’re not using options 🙂
Note “TV Preview” (Page C6) in today’s WaPo –
The headline is typical WaPo – misleading –
“A lens on Manassas’s immigration wars” when , of course, the
key issue was a Prince William County Resolution.
But the article is worth reading.
The article has been posted. Thanks big Dog.
The one I posted says Prince William.
Are there 2 editions?
@Cato the Elder
“Options aren’t complicated”
“… below 240 is back up the truck…”
“I’d say odds of AAPL buring the next two weeks are 85%.”
I know this is an open thread, but it would be nice to understand what’s being written.
Cato – are you rich?
I was just sitting here wishing I had the money to buy 1000 shares of apple. sigh. @ punchak
thanks for the explanation, Cato. I need to study up on the subject of options. I sure don’t want to leave money on the table. My volume is significantly less that what you are describing.
War! Some NYC teacher just came on Fox and friends and talked about Virginia’s poor public school outcomes. What a nerve. She said we were a right to work state and had some of the worst outcomes in the nation.
I declare war on her. What a nerve. What is she basing THAT opinion on?
I actually agreed with the charter school lady. That’s a switch.
The discussion was on the film “Waiting for Superman” that opens in theaters this week.
There is a town hall meeting televised tonight on MSNBC @ 8 and 11 pm to discuss the issues.
UFB, Moon!!! This woman certainly does have a nerve, ragging on Virginia’s public schools. I’m curious if she’s ever checked into the public schools in Utah or South Carolina. Now, there’s two screwed up states when it comes to public school education. I know two young ladies that have in the school systems in both of these states. They’d been educated in Fairfax County schools until high school and sat in classes in both of these states. They were not challenged one iota the three years that followed in the piss poor excuses of school systems.
I’d like to know why the lady has a problem with a right to work state? I guess she wants to hide behind the shield of the union. Geesh.
@Lafayette
Or Mississippi or Arkansas or Alaska.
The teacher was defending her union. Supposedly the poor quality of educations in the USA is being linked to unions. She was saying that VA is a right to work state and they have very poor educational outcomes. She is simply wrong. Virginia ranks fairly well in education. I think last I saw it was #7 or # 10 which isn’t too shabby.
Apparently “Waiting for Superman” is a Michael Moore type film (he has nothing to do with it.) but you get the general idea. It really blasts schools, especially those with strong union influence.
Laf, did you see the segment I am talking about?
The charter woman said she would start with reducing class size. I wanted to bottle what she was saying and send it to our supervisors.
Perhaps Big Dog could explain in more detail this item on the City of Manassas’s agenda:
ACTION ITEM: Consideration of Resolution #R-2011-24,
Supporting Regulation of First Trimester Abortion Facilities and
Providers by the Commonwealth of Virginia. (Staff: Council
Member Marc T. Aveni.)
I’m trying to decide whether the time has arrived to take the several thousand dollars I spend in the City each year elsewhere.
No, I missed the the segment. I sure hope they reair it.
There’s nothing wrong with smaller class sizes. Why send the message to the Supervisors? We have a School Board. Why not send this message to them? I think the Supervisors give the schools a decent percentage of the total budget buckaroos. Are the schools taking a good look at their waste? I know the WWII huts at “The Hill” were NOT ideal for this day and age, or even when they were built for that matter. However, when I look at the Kelly Building’s size and the wasted space in the building, I loose symathy for the schools. Then add to that the ridiculous salary of Walts’ and the fact he brought his “Greece Groupies” down here with him.
BTW-I did attend Mr. Richardson’s Town Hall last week at Battle Cat, oops Battlefield High. Man, there were a few fired up parents from the high school over the baseball coach. Lots of wasted time on issue that is “under investigation”. One man just would not shut up and continued to try to get Mr. Richardson to give an opinion on something he simply could NOT comment on at that time. He even explained to man why, but that man just kept on, and on, and on.
Why send the message to the supervisors? Because they didn’t feel the need the even listen about the stimulus money. They cut off all discussion despite the fact that the Chairman of the School Board requested that they table making a permanent decision. Yes, that would be Nohe, Stirrup, Covington, and May who thought they would score political points with their base by saying NO to stimulus money. Others should be in that list but some were out of town.
I am sure the school board already knows they have a need there.
I don’t know why you would say there is waste in the Kelly Building, What are you basing that on? I would hope that a new building would have some room for growth and expansion. There is actually a great deal of flexible space in that building. The actually school board room, for example, can ‘shape shift’ and become larger or smaller. It is used for other meetings and large group initiatives. The atrium can also be used in other capacities.
Any of those WWII buildings still being used by people on a daily basis should be shut down and used only for storage.
As for Walts salary, I suppose that is the going rate for this area and a system the size of PWC. I don’t like it either because of the disparity. His pay certainly isn’t the highest. However, he is one person and his salary really has nothing to do with the over all student needs of the system, which is what I am looking at. If he were paid twice as much, that still wouldn’t negate the fact that there is bad overcrowding in schools and that class size needs to be reduced. The charter school woman said that the charters in NYC had an average class size of 18 students.
As for the man who wanted to consume the total time with his own personal problems…there is simply no shortage of AH’s in PWC. Never has been. Totally inappropriate for sure.
I really have no opinion on the Supervisors shutting down discussion on the stimulus money. I’m sick of hearing about stimulus money. I never did understand why the BoS felt the need to address something that was for the schools to decide. However, Walts’ jumping the gun and ready to hire new teachers with money we did not have, weren’t sure if the state was even going to apply for the money or not was a little over the top in my opinion. And it is just that and nothing more.
I just look at that wasted space of the huge atrium and feel ill. I’m sure there’s some nice “green” reason that would be given for what I and others see as a total waste of space.
As for the WWII shacks those things should be condemned. I do feel for those poor unfortunate souls having to work in such buildings.
The man was so ridiculous I wanted to tell him, please, let some others ask their questions that Mr. Richardson is able to answer. No argument here, on the AH’s.
100!!!!!
