In an age of supposed globalization, when we are all allegedly becoming more alike—listening to the same American music, buying the same Chinese products—it is astonishing how absolutely British the British remain, and how thoroughly French are the French.
Their societies are older than ours and were never set up to be inclusive and a great melting pot. However, both countries have horrible problems with immigrants who are living outside the national culture. Perhaps because they are exclusive, they well remain British and French. Oddly enough, people I know from there are pure bred. Most Americans are hybrids.
I’m sadden to read another teen from our community has taken their life.
According to the article in the paper the schools have provided Signs of Suicide training for the Brentsville students. I think it’s good the schools have provided Signs of Suicide training for all Brentsville students. I think it would be wise and in our best interest as a community for the schools to give this training in ALL of our high schools. I hope someone from the schools is reading my suggestion of the training. We can’t for another suicide to dictate what schools gets the training. http://www2.insidenova.com/news/2010/oct/25/woodbridge-teen-dies-apparent-suicide-ar-585738/
Marinm, I would posit that the British may no longer be the British we once knew. The attempts by the courts, government, and other entities to accommodate the demands of the Muslim immigrant population appear to be shredding the foundation blocks of British culture, including the Common Law. In fact, it was the French, frustrated by the refusal of the British courts and government to extradite wanted terrorists, who coined the term “Londonistan” in reference to the United Kingdom.
More TV recommendations–We Shall Remain is being shown on PBS. I believe I have seen it before. It is a 5 part documentary about native Americans, starting with After the Mayflower, and moving towards Wounded Knee.
Monday nights at 10 pm but…you can also watch the episodes on your computer.
Listening to the Ford conference call this morning. Decent quarter. The key thing I was listening for was North American operating margins. It sounds like it’s close to 9.8%, which is a very big deal considering “old” Ford operating margins used to peak at 8%. That’s an unprecedented number if it holds up, and I continue to be impressed with this company.
@Moon-howler
It might stumble a bit trying to get through 14.5, but there is zero wrong with this company from what I can see. The debt is being paid down much faster than expected. We’ll have to see how high they can push their operating margins, but today’s 25% improvement on historical performances was very good news indeed.
Is that really what should happen to political opponents? No wonder I hate politics.
But I agree with you about Ford, Slow.
Carogo, I found the remarks underneath the video to be just as bad and just as moronic. Someone is bitching about Whoopie and she wasn’t even though.
I think Baher was trying to be funny. I just don’t like that kind of personality. I don’t mean I hate her. I would just prefer not to listen to her voice. Elizabeth met with my approval here. that doesn’t often happen. I thought Sheri Shepherd made a great deal of sense. They need a moderator with a bull whip or electric cattle baton on that show. I can’t stand all the yelling and interrupting and talking over each other. So…I don’t watch unless it is for a specific reason.
A bunch of men push a woman to the ground and one stomps her head, and things are looking up for Slow … spoken like a man or woman who talks crap while hiding behind a cartoon and an alias. I know, I know … you’re on the school crossing guard and if the kids find out you’re a pathetic human being you might get spitballed. Take O’Donnel’s advice and get some man pants.
If she was rushing the candidate in disguise, perhaps it was the right thing to do. However, “stomping” is a overboard. Further reporting shows that she, herself, says that she’s alright, with a headache. No medical treatment sought.
Police were there, but refused to intervene nor stop her from approaching the candidate even though she was in disguise with an obvious wig.
I put my foot on her, and I did push her down at the very end, and I told her to stay down,” Proffitt said, “I actually put my foot on her to… I couldn’t bend over because I have issues with my back.”
Lexington Police began an assault investigation identifying Profitt as a suspect. “Well I’ll just say it, if the police had done what they were supposed to do, it would have never happened,” Profitt said.
Another man involved in the altercation, Mike Pezzano, who held down Ms. Valle, tells NEWSFIRST he doesn’t condone Profitt’s actions. As for Profitt, he remains defiant. “I don’t think it’s that big of a deal,” Profitt said.
And when asked if he would apologize to Valle. “I would like for her to apologize to me to be honest with you,” Profitt said.

What a teabagger … I put my foot on her because I couldn’t bend over with my back issues and all; besides, if the police had acted I wouldn’t have needed to commit an assault and battery on the woman, and if Anita Hill owes Clarence Thomas an apology then this woman owes me one, too. He’s clearly got command potential in the Teabagging Patriot movement.
When the Tea Partyers get around to identifying how America has changed and to whose benefit, however, they get it almost all wrong. In the worldview of the American right — and the polling shows conclusively that that’s who the Tea Party is — the nation, misled by President Obama, has gone down the path to socialism. In fact, far from venturing down that road, we’ve been stuck on the road to hyper-capitalism for three decades now. The Tea Partyers are right to be wary of income redistribution, but if they had even the slightest openness to empiricism, they’d see that the redistribution of the past 30 years has all been upward — radically upward. From 1950 through 1980, the share of all income in America going to the bottom 90 percent of Americans — effectively, all but the rich — increased from 64 percent to 65 percent, according to an analysis of tax data by economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez. Because the nation’s economy was growing handsomely, that means that the average income of Americans in the bottom 90 percent was growing, too — from $17,719 in 1950 to $30,941 in 1980 — a 75 percent increase in income in constant 2008 dollars.
Since 1980, it’s been a very different story. The economy has continued to grow handsomely, but for the bottom 90 percent of Americans, it’s been a time of stagnation and loss. Since 1980, the share of all income in America going to the bottom 90 percent has declined from 65 percent to 52 percent. In actual dollars, the average income of Americans in the bottom 90 percent flat-lined — going from the $30,941 of 1980 to $31,244 in 2008.
It won’t be making news by then, but I’ll try to follow the court case the ensues from this moveon.org activist rushing Rand Paul. I’m curious to see how far it goes. My guess is nowhere.
Well, folks the Democrats are pulling out all the stops. They have reduced the number of absentee votes from the military, packed the voting machines, lied about just about everything, oh, I suppose the marijuana vote in California was just a coincidence to get out the young and stupid vote and now we learn that the media has absent-mindedness with respect to who the big – Big – contributer here is. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees reports that they will be contributing $87.5 million in this cycle, entirely or almost entirely to Democrats. This conflict of interest spending is at the public’s expense – literally, albeit indirectly, but definately. Time for a change.

Haven’t heard much this round, but remember several decades ago when
Halloween fell on Sunday and the Manassas “Seemed Like A Good Idea At
The Time” Council voted to move trick-or-treating back a day to Saturday.
Some citizens had complained about it being on their day of worship plus
Sunday was a school night. Result = two Halloweens – some kids got
the word, some didn’t and some, like one current member of the council,
remember going out both nights.
(Was reminded of this reading today’s Savannah Morning News on the net.
Savannah and surrounding Chatham County are giving it a go this weekend.
Good luck to them. All our Council got afterwards was a “BOO!”- except from

What kind of country do we live in today where the 9th circus court opens the doors to illegal immigrants to vote, as well as all sorts of other voter fraud, while at the same time those brave souls fighting and dying for us in combat overseas can’t vote?!?!?!
Cato and Moon – you two are going to drive yourselves nuts following the market minute-by-minute every day, especially on a day like today. I’m worried about where my investments are in a few months or years rather than a few minutes!
I didn’t follow. I never look when it is bad. I look once…then I stop looking. If I know it is real bad I don’t look once.
@Bob Pugh
But, I like looking at special stocks…I have 2 I like to check on daily: Apple and Silver Wheaton. I used to like to watch visa back when it was a fresh young lad. Now it bores me.
And Cato was right….22 cents down which is nada for apple. Cheer. Glad there was a recovery.

You just can’t trust those wild-eyed clowns on the 9th “Circus” Court of Appeals. So who were those Bozos that struck down the AZ law? The 3-Judge panel consisted of former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (sitting by special designation and appointed to the Supreme Court by President Reagan), Justice Sandra Ikuta (appointed by President George W. Bush in 2006), and Chief Judge Alex Kozinski (appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1985). Sandra Day O’Connor wrote the Court’s opinion.
@Moon-howler
Why have you allowed Cato to hijack your blog and require the rest of us to wade through all the crap about what he is doing on the market? As I said before, it is your blog and if you want to allow him to do this then I guess that is OK but the word boring begins to come to mind. Some others have asked why you don’t start a thread or a separate blog about high finance. Better yet, why doesn’t Cato start his own blog as a place to blow his horn?
Moon and I were having a conversation in an open thread. If you don’t like the subject matter, exercise your free will and don’t read it, as opposed to throwing a tantrum.
We promise to keep all stock-talk in the open thread or dedicate one to a stock topic. Actually lots of people on here either watch or play the market.
@Moon-howler
Thanks Moon, and thanks for letting me plug the show!

This is SCARY. When I was young, eons ago, I didn’t know or hear of any young people comitting suicide. Maybe it happened but nobody knew about it.
Modern society puts a lot of stress on young people. If you don’t fit in, whatever that means, you’re likely to become the target of, yes, bullying.
I knew two young people who jumped off the Golden Gate bridge in the 60s. SCARY !

When Tea Party wants to go back, where is it to?
By Harold Meyerson

Cato,
Yuke. What is setting it off? It has been a not so great week so far.
The Federal Reserve planted an article in the WSJ suggesting that the additional quantitative easing would be more a a dripping faucet than a firehose, which is firming up the dollar. Even if we do pullback here, it’s no big deal unless S&P breaks 1150 on a close. 1150 is an important inflection point and some consolidation between 1150 – 1170 would be rather healthy and set us up for a move higher into year end. Just what is going on at 9500 Liberty Street now? I hear it looks like 760 United Nations Plaza over there in the City. Tell Tell!
Haven’t you all been giving Mr. F enough attention these days? Has KK’s stolen his parade?

I just saw an opening bell dip in AAPL get bought VERY aggressively so yeah, head fake.

You were locked in spam. Its those links.
Someone is trying to post using your moniker. I was almost fooled. It isn’t the usual person though.
@Moon-howler
Don’t look now but we’ve almost recovered our losses.

@Bob Pugh

For me watching markets is like a crack pipe. Know what I hate? Weekends. No candles to watch.
@Moon-howler
@George S. Harris
Get off my nuts.
Moon and I were having a conversation in an open thread. If you don’t like the subject matter, exercise your free will and don’t read it, as opposed to throwing a tantrum.
just because a judge was appointed by a republican, doesn’t mean the judge isn’t a liberal. sadly it happens all the time
We promise to keep all stock-talk in the open thread or dedicate one to a stock topic. Actually lots of people on here either watch or play the market.
e, not everyone is going to be a conservative…or at least your kind of conservative.
I actually haven’t looked at the story. Who is it that has everyone in an uproar?
