That last thread was getting leggy. Let’s start a new one. The post election news continues to flow in. The President is in Asia, and there is a hint that a letter is being drafted to Nancy Pelosi urging her to not run for House Minority Leader.

There is a hint that PWC has lost 2 major companies. Does anyone know anything?

Had the pleasure of watching an interview with Dick Cavett this weekend. Sure made me nostalgic for the old time late night TV people! They showed vignettes from Jack Paar (I kid you not) and Carson. That’s when it sometimes was worth staying up late.

Cavett mentioned Sarah Palin whom he called “The Wild Word Smith of Wasilla” in 2008.
    Happy Monday, BTW!

A woman was waiting at an airport one night,
With several long hours before her flight.
She hunted for a book in the airport shops.
Bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.

She was engrossed in her book but happened to see,
That the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be.
Grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between,
Which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene.

So she munched the cookies and watched the clock,
As the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock.
She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by,
Thinking, “If I wasn’t so nice, I would blacken his eye.”

With each cookie she took, he took one too,
When only one was left, she wondered what he would do.
With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh,
He took the last cookie and broke it in half.

He offered her half, as he ate the other,
She snatched it from him and thought… oooh, brother.
This guy has some nerve and he’s also rude,
Why he didn’t even show any gratitude!

She had never known when she had been so galled,
And sighed with relief when her flight was called.
She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate,
Refusing to look back at the thieving ingrate.

She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat,
Then she sought her book, which was almost complete.
As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise,
There was her bag of cookies, in front of her eyes.

If mine are here, she moaned in despair,
The others were his, and he tried to share.
Too late to apologize, she realized with grief,
That she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief.

Just heard from a WSHS parent that the good folk of Westboro Baptist Church plan to picket Woodbridge HS on Nov. 15, from 7-7:30 AM, followed by another picketing at the Coast Guard Recruiting Station in Woodbridge from 8-8:30 AM.

So…do we ignore them, or turn out in force in a counter protest?

It’s on their heinous website: westborobaptistchurch.com

“Woodbridge High School in Woodbridge, VA November 15, 2010 7:00 AM – 7:30 AM
WBC to picket the students, parents and teachers at Woodbridge High School who live in rebellion against their creator every minute. Parents and teachers have taught the students from every day from birth, with everything that they do and say, that God is a liar and that His commandments are to be treated as suggestions, if that! That did that because they hate these children and are trying to justify their own sins by teaching the children to sin more and worse than they. How selfish are you?! Your duty is this: And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Dt. 6:6-7.) You have failed in your duty and God will require you to give an accounting for it. There is hope, however, because God has sent His servants to your town today to tell you the truth — to warn you to flee the wrath and destruction that is coming on this nation! The children are entitled to hear the truth one time in their lives. God does NOT love everyone and it is NOT OKAY to be gay. If you give a care for your never dying soul, you will come out from among this people and OBEY TODAY! Amen!

Coast Guard Recruiting Office in Woodbridge, VA November 15, 2010 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM
WBC will picket the Coast Guard Recruiting Office where they encourage young men and women to fight for a nation who has made God her #1 Enemy! This once-great nation is headed for imminent destruction because of its proud rebellion and monstrous sins against God. When you put on the Coast Guard uniform, you are placing a target on your back — just begging God to kill you. The coasts you’ll be guarding are leaking sieves and you’ll never win another war. Despite years of daily warnings from WBC, this nation and her military were turned over to the fags; now, the soldiers and sailors are coming home in body bags. You are not fighting for any righteous cause; you are fighting for the fags’ right to each each other’s feces and the whore’s right to murder her unborn baby! God no longer keeps america and is, instead, fighting against you. And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath. (Jer. 21:5.) You think your safe on water? Just remember, you aint safe from God! RUN from the recruiting office!! Repent and Obey God TODAY!”

  16. Wolverine

I say ignore them. Looking at the rest of their crazy picketing schedule and reports that the church has fewer than 100 members, I can see why they limit themselves to a half hour per picket. Sort of like: “If it’s Monday, this must be Woodbridge” — to play on a very old comedy movie title about taking guided bus tours in Europe.

Except in a few cases like military funerals, response seems hardly worth the effort. In fact, I think they count on a counter-picket response to get visibility for their protest signs in the news broadcasts. If you do want to go down there, I would suggest you just walk past them while whistling and making a circle around your ear with a forefinger.

    1. There are a boat load of students at that school who I expect will cut school just to give them the finger.

From the sad but true category.. out of 18,000 suggestions on how to reduce the cost of government, here are the Administration’s 4 finalists:

    1. Advertise property seized by CBP on online rather than in newspapers
    2. End automatic delivery of Federal Register.
    3. Use regular ground shipping, rather than express, to return empty lab sample containers to the USDA
    4. Require mine operators to complete quarterly data reports online.

I cannot tell if it is the Administration or federal employees who are not serious about costs, but it seems they need some outside help.

Did anyone else catch the story on NPR about how an office in the Department of Agriculture paid Domino’s over $12 million to develop and market a pizza with six kinds of cheese? This office is tasked with encouraging dairy consumption to help dairy farmers and does a lot of work to get restaurants to use more cheese.

Meanwhile, another office within Ag is encouraging people to eat less cheese because of the fat content.

Personally, that sounds like TWO unnecessary programs that can be cut.

FA, the govt is a pro at that. Just look to IRS Publication 525 for some of the doublethink.

Illegal activities. Income from illegal activities, such as money from dealing illegal drugs, must be included in your income on Form 1040, line 21, or on Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ (Form 1040) if from your self-employment activity.

Our VA ABC does the same thing. Encourages beer/alcohol sales (it’s for the children!) on one hand and in the other enforces the alcohol laws and tells people not to drink and drive.

  23. The govt. used to subsidize cheese to schools. As I recall, that cheese was wonderful. Let’s not try to hang cheese on the Obama administration. The cheese subidies have been around in one form or another for a long long time.

As for Dominos…Tom Monaghan must have enjoyed that 12 million. I guess Legatus, the Exclusive club for very rich Catholic businessmen is enjoying it also since Monaghan founded that organization also. Keith Fimian is a member of Legatus. Now why would the Obama administration be funneling money to Fimian? Awww, perhaps it was after he sold it.

I never said the Dept. Agriculture’s program to make a pizza with more cheese had anything to do with Obama, nor did the New York Times article I linked to. You always complain when people try to put words in your mouth, so why are you trying to do it to me?

The NY Times article was from this week and I heard it on NPR last night. I thought it was relevant because there has been a lot of talk about what can be cut in spending. And this is practically a poster child for wasteful government spending. The program has been around since Obama was in college. They do the Got Milk? ads among other things. The Dominos pizza incident occurred during the Bush 43 administration. And for the record, I believe Bush 43 had as much to do with it as Obama, which is to say nothing. It’s just another example of out of control government. The only thing dumber than the government spending $12 million dollars to help a private company market a new pizza is to simultaneously be running another program to discourage people from buying the pizza you paid to advertise.

The only thing Obama has to do with this subject is that the program should be shut down while he is President. (ie. now)

How the USDA came to have the cheese is interesting. The USDA bought up all the surplus cheese the dairy farmers could produce, to help keep milk prices stable. Then they distributed it to the underprivilaged. This was before someone figured out it was more efficient to pay the farmer a subsidy not to produce the milk in the firstplace.

  29. One of my favorite charities just send out an email saying that PayPal will match each donation to St. Joseph’s Indian School made via PayPal between now and November 12. The kids are trying to raise $5000. I had already made my monthly donation before the PayPal challenge hit but I dug in again because the amount will be doubled.

I am not a Catholic Charities kind of person but something about St. Joseph’s really appeals to me. So much has been done to stomp out Native American culture since the arrival of white europeans–especially some religious groups.

St. Joseph’s holds the Lakota language and traditions in high esteem and creates a learning environment that fosters the children’s pride in their culture. It is for that reason that I try to give regularly to this charity. Father Steve appears to love these children. He has been very ill but seems to be on the road to recovery.

Yes, I am pitching my favorite charity. I think it might be one of Wolverine’s also.

    Wopila tanka – many thanks

    From Fr. Steve:

This Christmas season, the greatest wish in the hearts of many of our Lakota children is to escape poverty.

Today, you have the power to double the difference you make for the Native American children in our care!

Thanks to PayPal’s belief in our work, they will double your gift … if you donate via PayPal before November 12!

Won’t you make a gift online today?

Your kind gift of $25 will double to $50. Your generous gift of $50 will grow to $100. And, if you are able to share $75, your gift will double to $150!

No matter the size of your gift, even more children like Maria will be helped.

You see, Maria returned to school in bitterly cold weather after Christmas break wearing only her best dress and black patent shoes. This beautiful, loving little girl left her only warm clothing with her sister on the reservation … Maria knew her sister would freeze without warm clothing. She knew friends like you would understand and want her to help!

“That these societies were instituted by the artful and designing members, purposely to sow among the people the seeds of jealousy and distrust of, the government, by destroying all confidence in the administration of it, and that these doctrines have been budding and blowing ever since, is not new to any one who is acquainted with the character of their leaden and has been attentive to their manoeuvres. Can any thing be more absurd, more arrogant, or more pernicious to the peace of society, than for self-created bodies, forming themselves into permanent censors, and, under the shade of night, in a conclave resolving that acts of Congress, which have undergone the most deliberate and solemn discussion by the representatives of the people, chosen for the express purpose, and bringing with them from the dinerent parts of the Union the sense of their constituents, endeavouring, as far as the nature of the thing will admit, to form their will into laws for the government of the whole – I say, under these circumstances, for a self-created body (for no one denies the right of the people to meet occasionally to petition for or remonstrate against any act of the legislature), to declare that this act is unconstitutional, and that act is pregnant with mischiefs, and that all, who vote contrary to their dogmas, are actuated by selfish motives, or under foreign influence, nay, are traitors to their country? Is such a stretch of arrogant presumption to be reconciled with laudable motives, especially when we see the same set of men endeavouring to destroy all confidence in the administration, by arraigning all its acts, without knowing on what ground or with what information it proceeds?”

    – George Washington, Letter to Burges Ball, Sept. 25, 1794

The Father of the Country (and the Federalists) opposed partisanship and tried to outlaw “democratic-republican societies.” The Democratic Republican Society of the County of Washington, the Society of United Freemen of Mingo Creek, and the Republican Society at the Mouth of the Youghiogheny formed to protest the tax the federal government placed on whiskey, which led to the Whiskey Rebellion that George Washington put down with federal troops. Imagine that … private groups fomenting insurrection against a President over taxes. George Washington was a true Patriot, but he was no tea party patriot.

    Our Banana Republic

    By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
    Published: November 6, 2010

In my reporting, I regularly travel to banana republics notorious for their inequality. In some of these plutocracies, the richest 1 percent of the population gobbles up 20 percent of the national pie.

But guess what? You no longer need to travel to distant and dangerous countries to observe such rapacious inequality. We now have it right here at home — and in the aftermath of Tuesday’s election, it may get worse.

    – The richest 1 percent of Americans now take home almost 24 percent
of income, up from almost 9 percent in 1976. As Timothy Noah of
Slate noted in an excellent series on inequality, the United States
now arguably has a more unequal distribution of wealth than
traditional banana republics like Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guyana.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/07/opinion/07kristof.html?_r=1

The Republicans are turning our country into a banana republic.

  37. Hahahahaha! Ummmm, who? You mean the guys in Congress that have been in charge since 2006 and have bailed out the connected fat cats?

The solution to that “problem” is building a business climate that encourages entrepreneurship and lets people build wealth.

  38. Starryflights

The concentration of wealth into the hands of the few has been ongoing for over 30 years, since 1976.

Income taxes are already at historical lows. One would have to force oneself to argue that the current business climate, built over the last 35 years, discourages building wealth.

  39. Starryflights

    – An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal
    ailment of all republics.

  40. Morris Davis

I agree that Keith Fimian deserves credit for conceding and not prolonging the process and wasting resources.  Joe Miller should take a lesson.  He filed suit in federal court to block the state from counting any write-in ballots where Lisa Murkowski’s name is not spelled exactly right.  Apparently the intent of a majority of the voters is immaterial … put a “y” at the end where there should have been an “i” and you wasted your time going to the polls.  And Nancy Pulosi should put the good of the party first and step aside. The Dems need fresh leadership if they have any hope of turning the tide.

  41. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE JARHEADS!! SEMPER FI and all that!

  42. “Income taxes are already at historical lows. One would have to force oneself to argue that the current business climate, built over the last 35 years, discourages building wealth.”

It is not just income taxes that prevent wealth building. Regulation, unionization, corruption, poor political planning, subsidization of large companies, support of illegal immigration, competition by corporate outsourcing overseas, rules that promote same, etc., all contribute to the difficulty in building wealth.

Of course, the richest also include billionaires that include Buffet and Gates. The stats also include the fact that there are more millionaires per capita, earned during the 80’s and 90’s than ever before. In 1976, there were fewer rich people.

    IPO Announcement

GM also announced that they have commenced an initial public stock offering. The offering will consist of 365 million shares of common stock and 60 million shares of Series B perferred stock with a liquidation amount of $50 per share.

The estimated common stock price is $26.00 to $29.00 per share.

Unless converted earlier at the option of the holder, each share of the Series B preferred stock will automatically convert on the mandatory conversion date, which is expected to be three years from the original issue date. The conversion provisions depend on the applicable market value of the company’s common stock, and are subject to certain anti-dilution adjustments.
