Wonders never cease to amaze us.  Even a broken koo koo clock is right twice a day.  It seems that Elena and Moon agree this one and only one time with AG Ken Cuccinelli.  Over what, you might ask, knowing that the earth has not begun to rotate backwards and that something must be up.

It seems that the Office of the Attorney General has created a side by side response to Corey Stewart’s Virginia Rule of Law Campaign.  The gods must not be happy because Corey got spanked– big time spanked.

There must be an internal war going on in the Virginian Republican Party, or perhaps, Cuccinelli just wants Corey Stewart out of his way since Corey has been making ‘higher office’ noises.   The AG could have quietly gone to the state Republican higher ups and told them to kill Corey’s proposal before it ever got into the General Assembly.  He could have easily told them that the governor didn’t like it, especially since Governor McDonnell has been rather stand-offish over the entire immigration issue.

But Cuccinelli didn’t let Corey Stewart’s baby bill die a quiet death.  He did a public smack down and apparently the OAG released the comparison.

Obviously the AG sees the Virginia Rule of Law Campaign for exactly what it is:  a cheap political ploy created to get Corey Stewart’s name in lights and usher him on in to higher state or national office.  Corey should know he can’t ride that horse into town again and he is no Jan Brewer.  Even the AG has limits on how many times he wants the state of Virginia to be sued.

Opinion from the Office of the Attorney General.  Click to download the side by side comparison.

[Note:  the matrix showing side by side comparison was not issued by the OAG.  That arrangement was made for comparison purposes.]

It appears that the AG sends a strong message implying  that the Virginia Rule of Law Campaign verbage is simply a sloppily crafted piece of legislation.  Stewart either violates the Virginia or U.S. Constitution or adds new laws we can’t afford at every turn.    Cuccinelli points out each legal oversight,  point by point.

So what caused Cucinelli to turn on Corey Stewart?  Why would he shoot holes in Corey’s great claim to fame?  Is this a case of clothes-lining  (or in this case, piano-wiring)  one’s politicial rival?  Is this a rift in the Virginia Republican Party or is this just a general shake down?  Will there be turf wars in Prince William County?  Is Corey sufficiently embarrassed?  Will he call on old friends to help him regain his political dignity?

64 Thoughts to “Corey Stewart Becomes Victim of a Public Smack-Down by the AG”

Kelly and M-H, I hope you understand that law enforcement officials have always the right to ask a person a question about immigrations status as a way to ascertain their identity. No law needs to be passed for this to be true. It always has been. It’s a free country.

So, whether it is Cuccinelli stating the obvious, Chief Deane stating the obvious, the statement is of very little consequence to someone who is involved in or familiar with law enforcement.

A requirement that officers ask about immigration status if a person looks or talks a certain way, that’s another matter. It takes away the officer’s discretion.

The fact that a lot of people don’t realize this does not reflect badly on Chief Deane. He’s a law man not a law professor.

    @Elena

    Elena :

Alicia Meade :Virginia’s Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s official legal opinion has officially obliterated Corey Stewart’s latest “look-at-me” campaign (more specifically, the legislation he is standing on hoping to legitimize it). But make no mistake, Cuccinelli is also aiming at Corey Stewart. This is why the opinion is worded in such a cruel way, belittling Stewart’s grasp of Constitution law, and implying that he isn’t even familiar with Virginia law. Even more interesting is Cuccinelli’s decision to leak this to the press, and make the humiliation public

Corey has two choices here Alicia. He either goes on the defense and attacks the Cooch or he runs with his tail between his legs. Which one will he choose? Will he go “tea party” and buck the GOP machine or lick his wounds and return to a life of simply being a the Chair of PWC.

If Corey does go after Cooch, he’ll be humiliated even more. If he goes for the Senate nomination, he’ll lose if not the convention vote, in the general for sure. This development leaves him with no options, really, other than to apologize and say he never read the law he is advocating and didn’t realize it was so foolish (which to me is the best explanation).

Wonder who’s side Letiecq is going to take on this. He worships both men.

    Wolverine,
I can’t totally understand where you are coming from because I don’t live in your neighborhood or those that were effected in Manassas. but I can tell you that there are so many crimes committed by those who are home grown American that I don’t see that status matters. Crime is crime. Socioeconomic issues are the common thread and so is subtance abuse. The guy who killed the grandma and her grandchild while driving drunk was pure blood american.

  4. @Elena, I actually found that horribly offensive regarding the 2 drunk driving cases.

Now I find the PCP/booze killer from the other Friday night just as horrifying. Because he wasn’t Hispanic, no big deal was made of it.

There is just something morally bankrupt over this focus on hispanics and not on other people, some habitual offender, who mow down people in cold blood while being intoxicated.

Locals ignored the fact that booze sessions go on all the time at Jiffy Lube and that there most certainly is something that local govt can do about that.

  5. @Moon-howler
I’m assuming you mean Jiffy Lube Live and not the oil change stations? I hope?

    1. Yes, of course. Jiffy Lube Live. What an awful name.

I am relieved beyond measure to know that I’m not the only Virginia Republican to see the Virginia ROL for the sham that it is. I’ve written before that the measures in Corey’s Virginia ROL are (1) already dealt with in other parts of the law, (2) unconstitutional, and (3) fail to address the real underlying cause of illegal immigration, which is illegal employment, as does Arizona’s SB 1070. Corey won’t address illegal employment because his developer and corporate paymasters who profiteer from illegal employment won’t allow that.

Moon wrote also, “There must be an internal war going on in the Virginian Republican Party, or perhaps, Cuccinelli just wants Corey Stewart out of his way since Corey has been making ‘higher office’ noises. Correct again. As a Republican, I want to win! Corey’s self-aggrandizing buffoonery works against Republicans who want to win office and govern responsibly. I’m sure also there is an element of Ken Cuccinelli wanting Corey out of the way, but whether it is because he is concerned about Corey as a competitor, or he wants to end the nonsense that is hurting Republicans from Prince William County to the Governor’s Mansion is debatable. I tend to go with the latter rather than the former.

  7. NTK, Happy Thanksgiving. This is a rather interesting situation. I am not sure what generated the response. I have been told several different things.

I am certainly no fan of Cuccinelli. I am no longer a Republican. I am certainly no fan of George Allen either but amongst the cast of characters, I know who I would be betting on.

Lafayette did get the phone call asking her who she might support for Senate: Allen, Cuccinelli, Marshall or Stewart. I could hear her laughing all the way over at my house. There is only one viable challenger in that list.

  8. Need to Know

Moon, Happy Thanksgiving to you and everyone else here! My money and vote are on Allen. He is well-liked statewide and experienced. How many of us have never said something really stupid in public before that we would like to take back? ZERO. I think he will be forgiven and has learned an important message about watching what he says, especially with cameras rolling everywhere these days.

George Allen would be the strongest candidate against Jim Webb. However, Jim Webb is not a liberal and this will be a tough race for whomever the Republicans nominate. I dread seeing a debate between Webb and Corey Stewart because of the embarrassment it would cause for Republicans. I have a much higher regard for Bob Marshall than most on Moonhowlings but think he is too conservative to defeat a moderate/conservative such as Webb statewide. Cuccinelli is not ready yet. He needs to aim at Lt. Governor in 2013 and ensure that Corey does not get the job.

I haven’t gotten the call Lafayette got yet; perhaps because we never answer surveys and maybe the pollsters realize they are wasting their time calling us.

    1. @NTK, I will support Jim Webb, again. But, I agree with you. Allen and Webb are not extremists. And once again, it will be a tough race.
