Let’s use this as an open thread.

It doesn’t look like we will be getting any of the white stuff.  I can’t remember the last time we got significant snow on Christmas Day.  How is everyone celebrating Christmas and the holidays?  Lots of friends and family or is this a quiet time?

155 Thoughts to “Merry Christmas to All! Happy Holidays!”

  1. IVAN

    Merry Christmas to all!

  2. Wolverine

It is still Christmas Eve as I start to write. The family was here. They just left for their own homes. Those little feet which once pitter-pattered through our own lives now belong to adult persons. Their little feet are now but memories and photographs on the wall or in dusty albums on the bookshelves. But the adult persons brought with them a new generation of little feet. Tonight, one of that new generation, only three, gave an old geezer a hug and said: “Merry Christmas, Grandpa. I love you.” Life goes on.

    Blessings to all.

  3. Wonderful. Thanks, Wolverine, for sharing.

    Merry Christmas to all.

  5. Flurries tonight. Does that count as white Christmas?

My weather desktop says storm warning. I think it is lying.

  6. Oooops. I just looked ouut the window and what to my wondering eyes did appear? Snow. I see it. Right before my eyes. Now sure how much we will get but it is snowing.

Here’s a link to my favorite Christmas song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P37xPiRz1sg Nothing says Christmas like watching it snow while listening to Robert Earl Keen. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas Day.

  8. Alanna

    Merry Christmas to All!

I recommend the Susan Boyle Christmas CD – ‘The Gift’, it is spectacular. I actually enjoy every song on the entire cd which is unusual.

    Moe,

That’s obviously a different genre than my favorite Christmas music. Very funny, Feliz Navidad!

  10. Cindy B

My husband reinacted the moment he asked me to marry him, 11 years ago on Christmas Eve. I was just as surprised as the first time! What a romantic.

Our first Christmas with the adult kids off doing their own thing. I texted them both this morning. “Mepprry Xmaprs lov mom” My phone started buzzing and moving on the breakfast table. Greetings from both in the farther reaches of PWC, Gainesville and Bull Run Mtn. Church with Grandmother at Trinity Episcopal in Old Town Manassas. Then watching Oscar (my avatar) play with his new squeaky toy shaped like a fuzzy Christmas tree.

    Merry Christmas to all!

  11. Moe thinks he is the gross-out king. He threw down the gauntlet….Bring it on, MOE!

(for those who aren’t tasteless like Moe and me, don’t look at it.)

  12. Alanna, I just sent ‘The Gift’ to a very dear friend in Salt Lake City.

  13. Cindy, where does your grandmother live? You are so fortunate to have a living grandmother. Mine was 105 when she died. I was very blessed to have her that long. She was a pistol and was also a tremendous influence in my life.

  14. Cato the Elder

The floodgates have officially been opened: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmb8bcJPTFM

  15. Lafayette

    @Cato the Elder
Very funny. I’m going to share that.

Wishing EVERYONE on Moonhowlings a very Merry Christmas!!!
PWC Taxpayer, this includes you too. 🙂

  16. Alright, Cato!!!

You left out someone else, Lafayette. Actually, Cato’s snowman reminded me of him. 🙄

He is sorry he won’t be joining us. He is locked forever in moderation, but he did leave a Christmas message. If it weren’t Christmas, I would just publish he IP address. ONly person who would bring that out in me.

  17. Cindy B

She’s my children’s grandmother – MIL from my first marriage. She’s from Yorktown. Trying to figure out if I’ll be driving her home away from the snow or to the snow in a few days. Turkey’s in the oven, adult kids arrive at 3 pm. Only three more Christmas cards to write! The only thing I didn’t get done is baking cookies. Santa had to eat store-bought.

  18. I am sure Santa didn’t mind.

Yorktown is a nice town. I have fond memories of Nick’s Seafood and the Yorktown Motel. Great weekend.

  19. Watch out! Lafayette has a snazzy new camera. None of us are safe now!

  20. Elena

If I had been able to video my projectile DAUGHTER vomiting immediately after gift opening, would that have counted as a christmas gross out video???

Merry Christmas to all! This Jew loves the holiday and loves the message of Christ, the one where people love one another, do unto others rule, and take care of those with less then they have.

  21. Juturna

Way to go Elena. Way to go.

  22. Actually what she said to ME was ‘and don’t be greedy bastards.’ I liked that version better.

  23. Merry Christmas! We have about 2 inches and building here in Richmond.

Daughter was very happy about her visit from Santa.

  24. Cargo, how much are you supposed to get?

  25. Lafayette

Moon-howler :Watch out! Lafayette has a snazzy new camera. None of us are safe now!

    You better believe it!!
I have twice the zoom, 7 times more megapixels, and a touch screen 3 times the size of my old camera for about a third of the cost. My old camera was 8 and half years old when it finally died. Many thanks to Mr. Lafayette for the gift.

  26. Emma

@Elena I always thought it was beautiful that Pope John Paul II described the Jewish faithful as “our spiritual forefathers.”

  27. @Moon-howler
Forecasts vary. I don’t believe any of them, soooo….lets say between 3-6 inches.

I blame global warming……somewhere, the Earth is warming….

And I want to be THERE!

  28. Lafayette

Where’s all of this snow we are supposed to be getting? I bet we don’t even get a decent dusting.

  29. Global warming actually causes megasnow. Don’t ask me to explain. I can’t.

We are on an advisory, not a warning.

  30. DB

Something to do with warmer air and more moisture from the south due to increased ocean levels colliding with cooler air from the north and the amplitude of the jet stream. Don’t quite get it myself.

  31. Big Dog

    #33 – may help explain M-H’s #31

#34 – I’ve been a GK fan for years and am glad he is better. You might
find the info on stroke prevention at the end of the article interesting.

  32. Lafayette

Nice to some people on this blog send their family members out to Giant once the snow finally starts. 😉 Of course, they didn’t get a lot sympathy from me, because I was there for “Round 2”.

  33. Lafayette

    oops..
    Nice to *SEE* some people……

  34. That trip was not for me, Laf. It was for him.

  35. Emma

What a cheat of a snowstorm. Wanted a post-holiday shutdown to stay home, watch movies and drink more spiked eggnog. Oh, well.

  36. Steve Thomas

Was catching up on the Sunday news shows (shocker, I am a regular watcher), and the subject of the repeal of DADT came up on a couple of them, when they were waxing philisophically about the accomplishments of the lame-duck. What were they all talking about? Both sides were talking about how very complicated this is, much more so than simply saying “It’s OK to be Gay in Uniform”, and how everything from bachelor and married govt. housing regs, dependent regs, and rules governing sexual conduct will have to be systematically rewritten, and (drum-roll)…how disruptive this will be during a time of war, and the repurcussions will be felt for at least a decade, even more. One of the talking heads mentioned “transgender”…and I left the room to go find duck-tape to keep my head from exploding.

Ok folks…before we start rolling down the road…some lifestyles are incompatible with military life. We must accept this as a logical argument. A transvestite who parades about the PX will not have the respect of his troops who see him doing it. The “Michelle Bombshell McGee type” cannot go tattooing every inch of her body, inculding her forehead, and serve in the military, because her apperance does not foster “military professional bearing”. If you want to look like you dove face-first into a tacklebox, this is America, and you have that right. However, don’t expect the military to have to take you.

Cargosquid listed those he believes were the most influential people of 2010 in a separate post. In it, he wrote: “Jesus – For inspiring millions to love one another.”

I am not in any way mocking Cargo for his post; I’m confident he is expressing his sincere belief. But his post reminded me that some on the far right seem to claim God and Jesus and Virtue and Values and Patriotism like they have a copyright. I don’t believe some on the far right are as Godly as they proclaim nor are some on the far left as Godless as they are portrayed.

A few years ago, WWJD bracelets were popular and encouraged wearers to pause and ask themselves what Jesus would do in their circumstances before they acted.

A local man spreads the far right agenda on his blog. He wrote an article in which he mocks a robbery victim for wounding a would-be robber rather than killing him. He writes: “The only thing about this I find disturbing is that at a range of one foot, all the guy can manage to hit is the bad guy’s leg. We could have avoided all the costs of prosecution and incarceration if only this gas station clerk had spent a little more time at the range, or taken a reasonably useful training course. Aim is a terrible thing to waste.” A reader commented: “I only pray the clerk doesn’t see all this crap being written about him and can put the incident behind him. Don’t know why you chose to make this poor clerk the subject of a thread, ____. Don’t you think things have been rough enough for him already?” In another article he says a conservative blog broke “a major story tonight about Virginia Senator Mark Herring engaging in homosexual acts with White House former Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel.” One of his readers commented: “C’mon ____. This sounds like complete bullshit.” Another person wrote: “This is the sort of sordid ‘info’ ____ just LOVES to bring up. No proof, no facts, not consideration for the Herring family. Sheeesh. Hope ____ goes to confession and soon.” Over the summer he provided his readers a link to a site where they could order cast iron statutes of President Obama portrayed as a lawn jockey (complete with slides like “One Chocolate Nation Under Allah”).

The same man wrote an article in his church’s bulletin not long ago about his work on one of the church’s committees. He wrote that he and the committee are “hard at work improving our ability to share God’s Word with a larger audience.” He goes on to say: “I feel tremendously blessed to be able to serve the Lord in this way. Sometimes it can seem a daunting task for us to figure out how we can spread God’s Word, and with the support of so many in the congregation I’ve found a great way to play my part.” His church describes itself as “A community of Christians committed to serving and sharing Christ.”

More than a hundred years ago, poet Thomas Ybarra wrote: “A Christian is a man who feels Repentance on a Sunday For what he did on Saturday And is going to do on Monday.” I guess some things haven’t changed much over the past century.

WWJD? I don’t know what He would do, but I suspect He wouldn’t mock a crime victim’s compassion that spared a human life, belittle other people with unfounded rumors about their sexuality, or stand back and laugh at blatant racism.

The dictionary defines a “hypocrite’ as “a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.” Decide for yourselves.

Cargo says Jesus inspires people to love one another. At least one person doesn’t seem to be feeling the Good Lord’s inspiration … except on Sunday.

It’s always good when threads go into the “my invisible diety is better than your invisible diety” rabbit hole.

Bonus points for the guy (or woman, I’m PC) that posts a picture of Muhammad or takes away our holidays if we went straight “reason”.

  39. marinm

e :sen. coburn predicts apocalyptic pain! 18% unemployment! destruction of the middle class!
    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/12/26/coburn-control-government-spending-face-apocalyptic-pain/?test=latestnews

File this in “duh”. I think if their is anyone that believes that the gravy train can exist forever I have some stocks I’d like to dump on you. 😉 I swear they’ll go up!!

  40. Marinm, I am way to full of Christmas cheer and Harlem Globetrotters happiness to post any pics of Muhammed….

The Globetrotters were great! Because of the snow, the crowd was very small. The souvenir concession was on the floor, so Squidette got to bounce her new basketball down by the court, high five some players, and joke with the Globetrotter “coach” I kept making her mad by shouting, “GO GENERALS!”

  41. What gravy train would that be? I don’t see any gravy train.

If Coburn sees where there is waste than I totally support him going in there and cleaning it up. More power to him. In fact, he is remiss if he sees something and doesn’t clean it up. This is his opportunity to go from Senator Jeers to Senator Cheers.

  42. Cargo, I am surprised the Globtrotters made it to town with all this snow. I saw them many years ago and still recall how enjoyable an evening it was.
