Get ready for the Solstice, full moon and eclipse! Staring in a sky near you Tuesday.
Is all the shopping done? Has everything arrived?
Legislation still going on…what next?
Will the Koreans light up the sky or will we have peace on earth, good will toward men?
The article was not clear. NO one made the parents do that. I think you probably have to look at the neighborhood where this happened. There are some neighborhoods I can think of where that might be a powerful message. It was voluntary.
I get it that you think guns are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not everyone else does. And kids absolutely have no business with guns. ONe of the worst fights I ever had with my husband was about giving one of his guns to my son. I didn’t think he was old enough. I wasn’t even sure it was legal. I knew he wasn’t mature enough. fortunately there were no bad effects, but that was just luck I think.
When I was leaving Lake Manassas this morning I was pondering where people can and can’t hunt. As I was driving down Baltusrol towards the intersection at 29, a guy in camo gear with a hunting rifle slung over his shoulder walked out of the woods and across the street ahead of me. Here is a link to a map. http://mapq.st/hr0T6g Assuming the map appears the way it does on my computer, there should be a purple dot shown on Baltusrol. That is about where the hunter crossed the road and it looked like he had parked his truck on the side road shown on the right. The building at the 7 o’clock position to the purple dot is a daycare center and to the right are houses. I don’t know that it would be safe to hunt with a bow in that area, much less a rifle. I don’t know what’s required to get a hunting license or to buy a gun, but apparently good sense isn’t one of them.
It should come as no surprise that I think some gun control is always going to be necessary. We don’t allow felons, mental patients, or children to have weapons. I support the 12 handguns a year law. (and no, I don’t argue it.)
Again, moderation.
This is the info I could find on hunting in PWC:

I’ll link a state site separately in case this would send me to spam.
A map for PWC:

From the state. (Somewhere last night I read that’s it’s unlawful to shoot within 100 yds. of an occupied dwelling.)

@Cato the Elder
You’re making me hungry. I would love to have that much meat (and a place to store it), I just don’t want to work that hard for it……
My 10 year old daughter got her BB gun when she turned 10. She’s getting a bow this Christmas. She’s had a throwing axe since 2nd grade. She also shoots Nerf guns everywhere. And I grew up with toy guns, playing soldier, cowboys n’ indians, and cops n’ robbers throughout my childhood. But I was also taught the difference between guns and toys. If I had been found shooting ANYTHING in a dangerous manner I would have been SEVERELY punished. And that’s if I hadn’t placed ANYONE ELSE in danger. God help me if I had done that……
TOY guns are toys. Weapons ARE NOT TOYS. People can tell the difference. Cap guns don’t hurt anyone.
To me this is not an issue (crushing toy guns) about guns being the greatest thing since sliced bread but the audacity that the government has in ‘helping’ people become ‘better’. This idea that we need to bring in a bunch of people in uniforms, talk about how something is bad or evil and then destroy it in front of kids.
It could be a book, it could be a plastic gun, it could be anything else that an individual citizen is asked to hand over to the government for distruction. It’s disgusting. It’s disheartening that more people don’t see it that way. To me this is no different than the govt saying we need to cut down on teen pregnancy and having a govt doctor come in and mutilate their genitals. It’s as disgusting to me.
Why do automatically assume that if someone wears a badge or a uniform that they have the right answer. I’m just shaking my head here that I even have to argue this point. I have no problem if Little Johnny’s mom says no guns or video games or dolls in her home. I object to a jack boot ‘encouraging’ Little Johnny’s mom to say no.*
*Little Johnny’s mom may be on public assistance and her cooperation is “appreciated” by her parole/welfare/child assistance “officer”
@Cargo, did you see the Nerf gattling gun for sale at Target?? AWE wait for it.. SOME!
@Cargosquid
Many in law enforcement would disagree. Some toys look very much like a Saturday Night special. When making a split second life or death decision, you want to risk it?
As long as you aren’t made to do it, I have no problem with it. Do you object to the govt having finger printing sessions for the public?
I don’t see the govt as an evil entity. Anything can be evil but I don’t assume that is the default.
Marin, I have been trying not to let this come out of the ends of my fingers but the fingers won…if you don’t see the difference in grinding up toy guns, speaking out against teen pregnancy and genital mutilation, you just proved what many of us have thought for a LOOONNNGGGGG time.
Sorry. The devil made me do that.
Sorry guys.
MH, I’m fingerprinting the broodlings with a home kit. We won’t file the paperwork with the government or have the locals do it.
Heck, the whole DNA sample at birth has me vexed. I’m really not sure how to tackle that one. I don’t think I’ll ever win that battle with the wife. Maybe I can avoid naming the child (and not getting the social security card at birth) so that atleast the government only knows the broodlings by some super secret random ID number. I’ll have to think about it longer.
LOL.. What did the devil make you do? I didn’t see anything bad. 🙂
I have a healthy distrust for government. Let’s say Ms. Palin or Mr. Marshall we’re in charge of things. Would you be as trusting? Why or why not? hehe.
No, and I would work hard to see that their powers were limited. Thank goodness for balance of powers.
I don’t understand about birth DNA. Howabout a brief update?
(you know darn well what I was saying)
Censored — Thanks for the information. The 100 yard rule is interesting given that the range of most deer rifles is at least 10 times that distance.
@Moon-howler
And that’s why toys are now made to look like toys. The same problem is when kids flash laser pointers at cops. Bad things happen.
What I meant is that having toy guns is not necessarily detrimental to future gun handling. I have no problem watching my daughter and her friends shoot at each other with Nerf or Laser Tag, or Paintballs (I can’t wait until I introduce her to that.) because I know that she has been taught the difference. Now, if she’s handling her BB gun or any other firearm that I have, she knows to follow the 4 Rules.
And I would be willing to bet my next paycheck that she has been properly trained. However, many have not. It is the have nots that scare me.
As for toy guns, God only knows the crap that comes out of China.
Wolverine, please read your email ….the one linked to your acct here.
Thx

MH, we’ve discussed in previous threads.

“you just proved what many of us have thought for a LOOONNNGGGGG time” – I’m touched that people think of me outside of the blog.
I remember having the only school 1980’s sytle Lazer Tag game set. My friend had the white rifle and body sensor and I had the black pistol (no blaze orange tip) and helmet. Many days of running around our apartment complex shooting each other. Fun times.
Man, I do NOT get this “license” thing you are talking about in PWC. You shoot off a BB gun in a residential area in Loudoun and the cops will make your ass grass. Never heard of a license for something like that except maybe at an authorized shooting range. Is this for real out your way ? A license to shoot in a residential area?!!!

Keep an eye out for Tip #4 with regard to the gun/kid part of this thread. 😉
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
Wolverine, no, they aren’t supposed to be shooting in a residential area – license or no license. In fact from what I’ve read they’re too young to be shooting without adult supervision. There appear to be few places to hunt in PWC. I don’t think there are any public shooting ranges either. (There may be an indoor range though.)
They supposedly showed the cops a license to hunt squirrels. But judging from their ages, it’s a junior or apprentice hunting license. I’m guessing that they were out of school early and there were no parents at home. One kid’s parents better separate him from the other two. He seemed remorseful and a bit brighter than the others. I think the other two’s parents were understudies for parts in “Deliverance”.
@marinm
LOL! I was just about to post this! It’s so wrong on so many levels!
PWC shooters don’t have many options. Quantico Shooting Club and Fairfax Rod and Gun Club, and that’s about it. Both are private and both have waiting lists, although you can get immediate entry into Quantico if you’re active duty or retired (plus they have a 1000 yd range). Other than that you have to go to Gilbert’s or Blue Ridge up in Chantilly. There’s a place in Woodbridge that was developing a modern indoor range but the man heading the project passed unexpectedly and it’s been in limbo for 2 years now.
Best hunting in PWC in my opinion is Merrimac Farm adjacent to MCB Quantico. Plentiful deer population and good turkey hunting as well. You can register for quota hunts in state managed areas here: https://www.vaquotahunts.com/. You can also get a permit to hunt mainside Quantico, which almost always has a deer population problem.
Feral hogs are becoming a real nuisance in Virginia, and there are a lot of places in Culpeper where landowners are more than happy to let you hunt their land to get rid of the hogs. You have to hit these suckers just right, they develop a thick layer of scar tissue that can grow up to 3″ thick which is very difficult to penetrate, and they will charge you if you don’t bring them down with your first shot (one chased me up a tree one time). .300 win mag will get it done. They’re hard to field dress but worth it IMO. Dig yourself a BBQ pit and go to work – very tasty.
Cato, at one point my father was a firearms instructor for the FBI at Quantico. He always mentioned how many deer there were on the range at dusk – never mentioned being able to shoot them though.
This blog is just full of useful info.
Many folks just hot foot it up to the NRA range. Why wasn’t that mentioned? Are they in the dog house?
Braaaaaaiiiiinnss……I wish Congress had braaaiiiinnnnnsssss….
Just realized, if zombies actually did go after the brain, then….there would be no new zombies….
Just realized….I put way too much thought into the logic of zombies……
Remember, lock the door THEN bake…
No, the NRA range is a fine one for handguns it just slipped my mind because I don’t go there very often. For a rifle you can’t beat the ranges at Quantico though.
@Censored bybvbl
I had a friend that used to take deer with a bow off his back porch in base housing at Quantico (a big no no but he loved his venison). Seriously they’re usually overrun with deer this time of year.
Are you saying that the deer you kill won’t be the one who wrecks your car on route 1?
I like the range at NRA. I have been to the one at Woodbridge also. Not in a good spot. I wouldn’t go there unless armed.
My nephew lived so close to the range that I could hear the gunfire. I was sorry when he moved. I made plans…..
Now he’s in Virginia Beach studying to become a CO of an F-18 squadron. (Yes, I’m bragging…)
I am ready to set up a sting operation on my property for hunters. Some a-hole not only trespassed and killed a deer on my property, but left its hide and bones. I am ready to go rambo and get my camo’s on if I find another carcas on my property.
Look, I am not against hunting, I’m not a vegetarian, but having the utter gall to take a gun or other weapon on someone elses freakin’ domain is utterly unacceptable!
I believe we call that poaching. It was punishable by death in days of yore….
Santa’s reindeer are getting one last meal before they begin their arduous journey, deliverying toys to all the children around the world.
They begin their flight any minute now.

Moon,
How’d you beat to posting NORAD’s Santa Tracker. I must truly be slacking this year.
Emma,
It was a pleasure to meet you in person. 🙂
I agree with MH and Elena. Lets get a rope. 🙂
Elena, a former neighbor of mine bought a farm in a more rural county and had the same problem with poachers. Her land was posted but one day she heard a shooter on her property, got her rifle, found him, and held him at gunpoint for 45 minutes until the sheriff arrived. I’ll bet he never stepped foot on her property again. Let’s just say that she’d had a type of training that qualified her to do this and had reported problems in the past.
@Elena
You should call and report them: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife-violation/
Poaching is 2500.00 and 12 months for each offense.

Three days after he posted a series of six video clips recorded with a cell phone camera at San Francisco International Airport, four federal air marshals and two sheriff’s deputies arrived at his house to confiscate his federally-issued firearm. The pilot recorded that event as well and provided all the video to News10.
At the same time as the federal marshals took the pilot’s gun, a deputy sheriff asked him to surrender his state-issued permit to carry a concealed weapon.
When you defy the govt and show the security theater of TSA be prepared to be visited by the gestapo.
It sounds like there is some information we do not know. BUT—anyone can see that he is presenting a security problem for TSA. I am not saying TSA is always totally right but….they have a job to do and they sure did it better than the last airport security we had which lacked uniformity, English speakers, and reliable security.
As for gun confiscation, who knows. Perhaps there is something that hasn’t been said.
I don’t anticipate being on for a day or two so a very heartfelt Merry Christmas to everyone (that swings that way) and a Happy Holiday to those that don’t.
From my friend Susanne:
Merry Christmas Marin. How very unexpectedly PC of you. 😉
A Christmas gift for the bagger-haters! http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1938095
@Lafayette It was great meeting you, Lafayette! So glad you stopped by.
Merry Christmas, Moon, and to all of the Moonhowlings gang. Peace.
Emma
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Emma.
Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Merry Christmas to me!!
There’s NOTHING like getting home and having her driveway blocked by the next door neighbor’s guests. They deny it’s there company. Nobody is home or has company. I’m super pissed because this happens regularly with the daycare customers. Grrr!!!
I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas, and Happy Holiday for whatever holiday you celebrate according to your faith and your tradition. We may not see eye-to-eye on every issue. We may not agree on ANY issue. But we all hunger and thirst, laugh and cry, and we all bleed red. Peace on Earth and Goodwill toward men is a good thing to strive for, I don’t care who you are.
That was a beautiful post Steve. I agree with the entire sentiment. Merry Christmas to all my moonhowling friends or enemies 😉 Yes, slowpoke, even you!
Elena,
While I would never condone someone leaving the remains of a gutted and field dressed deer on somone elses property, sometimes a hunter will shoot a deer, and instead of dying right away, it runs. If the wound is mortal, the deer will eventually lay down and die, potentially on someone elses property. As long as the hunter did not illegally shoot the deer (poaching) they do have a limited right to pusue and retrieve. If they enter your property for the sole purpose of getting their deer, and immediately drag it off your property, then there is no violation. However, leaving spore or remains behind is a no-no, provided the hunter knows he has crossed a property line. When I lived in Jacksonville NC, my property was seperated by a narrow creek from property owned by a hunting club. I can’t count the times I had a wounded deer jump the creek and die in my backyard. I could not claim the deer until it had been unclaimed for 12 hours. In all but one case, the hunters showed up quickly, and dragged it off my property. Where they field dressed their kills I don’t know.
I never knew that law.
My parents had a mid-size farm outside of Warsaw, Virginia from about 1980 until 1998. They spent all hunting season running people off their property. It was not a working farm. People were very rude about coming on the property. People would knock on the door and ask. They always said no because they said hunters left a mess and they were afraid of fire.
They weren’t opposed to hunting. Hell, they raised bird dogs and my father had always hunted quail. I think my mother might have been squeamish about the deer.
I don’t think they ever ran into what happen to Elena.
Steve, if it had been a dying deer, why didn’t they take away the carcass? Leaving a mess would have really pissed me off. Shudder.
Posted is one of the first signs I learned to read as a kid.
