206 Thoughts to “Open Thread………………………………………….Friday, January 21”

  1. FIRST!

    Had to do it.

Don’t tell me that you never did it.

    😉

  2. Emma

    A sickening story:

A doctor accused of running a filthy “abortion mill” for decades in an impoverished Philadelphia neighborhood delivered babies alive, killed them with scissors and allowed a Woodbridge woman who had survived 20 years in a refugee camp to be overmedicated and die at his clinic, prosecutors said.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 69, was charged Wednesday with eight counts of murder for the deaths of seven babies and one patient — 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, who had traveled from Virginia for a late-term abortion.

Prosecutors described the clinic as a “house of horrors” where Gosnell kept baby body parts on the shelves, allowed a 15-year-old high school student to perform intravenous anesthesia on patients and had his licensed cosmetologist wife do late-term abortions. A family practice physician, Gosnell has no certification in gynecology or obstetrics.

  3. Hawaii Gov. Abercrombie said on Tuesday that an investigation had unearthed papers proving Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961.
He told Honolulu’s Star-Advertiser: ‘It actually exists in the archives, written down,’ he said.
But it became apparent that what had been discovered was an unspecified listing or notation of Obama’s birth that someone had made in the state archives and not a birth certificate.
And in the same interview Abercrombie suggested that a long-form, hospital-generated birth certificate for Barack Obama may not exist within the vital records maintained by the Hawaii Department of Health.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1348916/Hawaii-governor-says-Obamas-birth-record-exists-produce-it.html#ixzz1BdXnXQ00

    May not exist….
    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! 2012 may get interesting.

  4. Elena

    Emma,
I read that story, very sad, very sad indeed, how women, desperate for help and vulnerable, can be so abused for profit.

  5. Elena

    MH,
LOVE the pic with your caption!

  6. Pro-choice people very much want unscrupulous physicians out of the business of practicing medicine. On that, everyone can agree. Pro-choice people want access to safe, legal abortion, not abortion by butchers. If that kind of bad, risky medicine is going to be practiced, how is that different from back alley abortion?

See the thread I posted in November on a similar physician. The pro-choice community sounded the alarm. You won’t find us making excuses for butchers. If bad medicine is being practiced, get them out of there!

  7. How about the caption: Does this snow make my buffalo butt look too wide?

  8. Wolverine

    Is that a trick question?.

    From cargo’s article:

Some believe his Certification of Live Birth is fake and he was really born in Kenya. Others argue that Obama is a citizen of the United Kingdom or Indonesia. Most theories have been dismissed by many in public office and the media, and have been found to be misleading or generally untrue.

However, the conspiracy theories still thrive, and according to Abercrombie, are likely to continue despite whatever evidence that shows him to be a proper U.S. citizen.

Hey cargo, you ever been snipe-hunting? Bwahahaha!

  10. Elena

    naughty Starry 😉

I ams soooooo tired of hearing about the illegitimacy of Barak Obama. Cargo, honestly, I would have expected more from you.

  11. Pat.Herve

The Governor of Hawaii has no business looking at or for Obama’s birth certificate. If I were the vital records keeper in Hawaii, I would not let the governor see any record, unless he were entitled to see it, and needed to see it. Much that same as those state employees who looked into Joe the Plumbers records, and other breaches.

  12. I would hope no one would take something like that seriously. re birther crap. That’s really last ditch effort stuff. The ultimate long shot.

The attack against the ‘mainsteam media’ has made every hack an authority and also a publisher. We need to elevate our thinking on this matter. I rather like the idea that the MSM can be held to standards and has some accountability. I don’t want to hear no it doesn’t. Neither does the crap people are foisting off as journalism either.

If there is a problem with MSM, then it is our fault and our own failure to hold it accountable. To slide to a lower standard is simply not acceptable.

  13. Emma

Of course, late-term abortion, to which this woman fell victim–a woman who survived decades in a refugee camp–is forbidden under the new HCR only by a thin piece of paper called an Obama Executive Order. That is our President’s bow to bipartisanship–a piece of paper that isn’t even worth the ink when it comes to enforcement.

    1. @Emma, actually, there is a big piece of paper out there called Roe v Wade that pretty much controls that. The state has been given control over third trimester abortion. Try getting a third trimester in Virginia…ever. Isn’t going to happen.

Emma, you have fallen victim to anti abortion rhetoric married to anti health care rhetoric. Absolutely nothing has happened that would have made third trimester abortion spring to life.

Its a horrible story. The ‘doctor’ needs to go to jail. He is a sick mofo. Now what else can be said?

  14. Emma

@Cargosquid I hope the ghost of Vince Foster visits the good governor in his sleep tonight. There is a lot of water surrounding Hawaii…and sharks…

  16. Need to Know

President Obama IS a naturally-born US citizen, and neither George Bush nor Dick Cheney has anything to do with planning and carrying out September 11, or allowing it to be carried out. Please, can’t everyone move beyond idiotic conspiracy theories and deal with real issues such as, perhaps, unemployment at nearly 10%, spending and deficits bankrupting our country, insane nations like Iran and North Korea building nuclear bombs, etc.?

Does anyone not believe that if the accusations regarding Barack Obama’s birthplace had any merit at all that Hillary Clinton’s primary campaign in 2008 would have found out and used the information against him?

    1. @NTK

      Totally agree with you, NTK!

  17. Pat.Herve

+1 NTK – now, about that grassy knoll……

  18. marinm

The PA incident is tragically sad and illustrates that we MAY have a need to look at how abortion clinics are run. I’m still not 100% behind the idea because women do have a constitutional right to an abortion and I don’t want those regulations used as a means to ban abortions by simply putting these companies/businesses out of business.

My understanding is that the government had been notified about problems at that facility and took no action. So, in-place governmental regulations and control mechanisms may have to also be investigated.

The story out of HI gave me a chuckle. More because it shows the failure of our 4th branch of govt. Do I see anything coming out of it? No.

Interesting that abortion is now being used as a wedge on the healthcare reform debate. I’m actually more interested in how the GOP spending cut plan will work out. That’ll be an interesting fight.

  19. Elena

    Emma,
Do you know a woman who had to make and excruciating decision to go through a late term abortion? Do you know any religious women who wanted that baby so bad but had to make that painful decision?

For me, I believe abortion rights are on demand up to 12 weeks, after that, I am believe there should be restrictions.

    However, MH said it best:

Emma, you have fallen victim to anti abortion rhetoric married to anti health care rhetoric. Absolutely nothing has happened that would have made third trimester abortion spring to life.

Its a horrible story. The ‘doctor’ needs to go to jail. He is a sick mofo. Now what else can be said?

  20. Elena

Marimn, totallly agree. There were numerous complaints, why were they not properly investigated!

Hey cargo, you ever been snipe-hunting? Bwahahaha!

What really settled it for me, on the whole Birth/Eligibility issue, was what I learned watching Bill O’reily. They investigated and found the actual Obama birth announcement in the Honolulu newspaper edition that ran, when Obama was born. They also verified this by viewing hardcopies and the microfiche of the paper at various libraries. If this was a conspiracy to fake an announcement, this forethought would have had to have taken place years ago. When I considered this along with all the other evidence for and against, the scales tipped to “he was born where and when he said he was born”, IMHO. Now, folks are free to believe what they want. If they want to agrue with me, I’ll only do so after we’ve viewed the same material. Otherwise, it’s settled for me.

  22. Steve Thomas

“Its a horrible story. The ‘doctor’ needs to go to jail. He is a sick mofo. Now what else can be said?”

    Elena,
You make a good point. I think this “doctor” would have done this regardless of the restrictions in place, so perhaps he’s not the best example to he held up as justification for more and tougher restrictions. There are laws and restrictions in place, and he will have to face justice for breaking those laws. Kinda reminds me of the arguments being made for more gun-control, in the wake of Tucson, VATech, etc. Laws only impact the law-abiding. Criminals don’t care about laws.

  23. Steve,

What you really need to ask yourself is: What is it you really want to stop.

Marin, how are dentist offices run? How about plastic surgery offices? Are there dangers here? absolutely. You aren’t going to stop greedy bastards from performing bad medicine whether you are dealing in plastic surgery or abortion.

I would suggest a good clearing house for a types of medical procedures. How many complaints were there against the abortion doctor? Lots. How often were they followed up on? Almost never. All the regulation in the world does no good if there is no follow up.

And finally, you know how you all feel about 2nd amendment rights? That’s pretty much how I feel about Roe v Wade. So be careful what you want to whittle away at.

  24. @Steve Thomas
Elena did say it correctly. This doc is the Jeffrey Dahmer of doctors.

I can’t deal with the concept of abortion after three weeks of pregnancy. At three weeks, that fetus is a baby that has a brain and feels pain. The baby is sentient.

I’m not going to judge women who have an abortion, but I am going to judge abortion. It makes me sick. Prevention, prevention, prevention and intervention, please.

    1. Pinko, there is no medical proof of your assertions. Please stick to facts.

The bottom line is, abortion is a legal procedure in all 50 states, for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Each person is free to have their own feelings about the procedure or the act of abortion. However, personal feelings should have nothing to do with national or state policy.

  25. Gov. Ambercrombie was actually trying to help President Obama. I’m laughing because of the irony of the situation. Previous authorities repeatedly stated that “the long form birth certificate is there and I’ve seen it and I’m satisfied.” And now it can’t be found and may not exist. Whether Obama was born in Hawaii is moot. He is the President and legally satisfied all challenges. I just found it amusing.

I’m just wondering how he got a passport without a long form birth certificate or can you get one with the short form as shown by Hawaii?

No conspiracy here, just amusement at political snafu.

  26. marinm

MH, I think you can substitute the word abortion in my arguement with guns and I’d support both just as much. It’s a constitutional civil right. It’s sacroscant. Now on the border we may regulate but I actually argued in my post above that it may make more sense to look at how the existing system failed before we look at doing new things because I acknowledge that those laws could interfere with a woman’s constitutional right.

I don’t see abortion different from guns. They are rights provided to us by our creator protected by the Constitution. I may not like the idea of abortion and it may make me uncomfortable knowing that supporting that right will lead to loss of life but both are rights worth protecting and fighting for.

I actually agree with your other arguements in #25 because they echo the gun thread from a few days ago. Regulating the “good guys” won’t impact the “bad guys” and will only hurt the “good guys”. So, let’s look at what failed (existing laws) and see how/why they failed and what we can do. It may be that the laws were fine but the people failed. I think that’s more than likely what happened.

    http://articles.philly.com/2011-01-20/news/27038760_1_abortion-doctor-routine-abortions-grand-jury

Among the many questions raised by the grisly charges against West Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell, one stands out: How did this go on so long?

Indeed, almost a third of the 260-page report released Wednesday by a Philadelphia grand jury is devoted to that question.

The answer that the jury offers amounts to a scathing denunciation of state regulatory officials and, to a much lesser degree, the city’s public health department.

As I’ve said many times on this blog. If you can regulate a gun you can regulate an abortion. That’s why we always have to be on guard against BIG GOVERNMENT coming after our civil rights.

If only Presidential elections could be run like “The Apprentice,” so we can try these guys on for size before we’re stuck with them for four years.

  28. Censored bybvbl

There’s no valid excuse for why that hack was allowed to practice for as long as he was. I think you have to take a good look at state licensing boards. A doctor and my sister tried to get a physician disciplined over his treatment of nursing home patients who were in his care. After practically a year of appearing before state boards, the offending physician voluntarily gave up that portion of his practice. There’s a bit of circle-the-wagon mentality when it comes discipline in some professions.

  29. @marin

No says anyone has to have an abortion or own a gun.

I don’t even mind abortion having some restrictions. In fact, I am glad they are there as outlined in Roe v Wade. I grew up in an age where the alternatives to abortion not being safe and legal were pretty grizzly. Actually, many of the stories sound much like the Philadelphia case.

People need to be reminded that what Dr. Butcher was doing was not legal abortion. The National Abortion Federation refused him membership and testified against him.

Anti choice organizations would be wise not to hang their flag on this case. It merely strenthens the case for abortion being safe and legal.

  30. Donald Trump as President……..eh, could be worse. I mean, look what…..never mind. Too easy.

  31. ewwww…not with that hair.

  32. Emma

@Cargosquid and it’s not like you have to have a full resume or anything anyway 😉

  33. Emma

Yeah, the hovercraft hair would be a problem for me.

  34. Pinko said:

Actually, you are judging women who have had abortions. Abortion can’t happen without the person who is pregnant being involved. At that stage, we can’t separate the woman from the abortion.

Just admit you are judging them. Its a human trait. I have judged a few of them. Not proud of that fact, but yes, I did–especially when I thought they had had too many.

Are you willing to back sex ed in schools and to provide safe reliable contraception to all people who want it? That’s where it all begins.

If memory serves me correctly, you were one of the ones who wanted to brush KK’s under the rug or not have it downtown because high school kids might see something in there? Correct me if I am wrong.

Prevention starts with those who are sexually active having solid facts, not myths. In someone’s perfect world, we would have our children under lock and key and they wouldn’t think about sex until they were safely in a situation where it was ok to have kids. That isn’t the way it works and we need to prepare young people to assume responsibility for their own reproductive health and outcomes. Hiding knowledge and contraception from them isn’t the way that is going to happen.

  35. @Emma

All that money and still that hair. Can’t money buy better hair?

  36. marinm

    @Moon-howler

Maybe that’s his way of flexing his fiscal conservative muscles…by showing that he won’t pay for an expensive rug. 🙂

  37. Emma

The video looks faked, but it is fun.

    1. @Emma

I mean his hair. Is that a rug or real?

Home sick today, so I’ve had nothing but time. Here is the answer to America’s burning question:

M-H, thought you might want to try this.

  40. Elena

The burning question is this though……….Would you trade your great hair for millions?

  41. That depends. Millions of what? Eh.

Yes. I would sacrifice my head of hair for millions. Elect me!

  42. Emma

I have the world’s most annoying hair. If it will get me millions, then yes.

  43. Wolverine

Emma, quit complaining. At least you still have that hair!!

  44. The government, since it is the majority owner of AIG, is pushing Sharia compliant financing. Hmmmm….what was that about separation of Church and State? I wonder what would have happened if this had been “Christian financing?”

    http://www.thomasmore.org/qry/page.taf?id=119&_function=detail&sbtblct_uid1=877&_nc=2c72e9156dd0a996e1d224eab065c2ce

With the aid of taxpayer funds provided by Congress, AIG also employs a “Shariah Supervisory Committee.” According to AIG, the role of its Sharia authority “is to review our operations, supervise its development of Islamic products, and determine Shariah compliance of these products and our investments.”
