107 Thoughts to “Is this a Blizzard? Open Thread 1/26/11”

  1. marin, one person had questionable data. Literally thousands of scientists work in this field. Different scientists have different theories based on different sets of data. Same with plate techtnics, volcanology, paleontology, pick a branch…

Climate change is more than just a myth. My simple kid to mature woman experiences tell me that much.

25 years ago today, I was a Captain stationed in Cocoa Beach, FL. Some buddies and I were walking across the base when the shuttle launched. Launches were so routine that had we not been outside already we wouldn’t have made an effort to watch. Hard to believe a quarter-century has past … it doesn’t seem like it’s been that long.

  3. Cato the Elder

Al Jazeera is reporting that Egyptian police are leaving the city of Suez, which would put the canal at risk. A very big deal if true.

  4. @Cargo

Points for providing that link. I think it is safe to say there are rich people out there trying to shape their own America.

  5. @Moe

What was that like to witness that horror show? I was watching it on TV. Story of my life. Thank goodness it was just adults. We were horrified.

  6. @Cato,

    VERY big deal for sure.

What set this off? This is one of those tinder box things that could sweep through the entire middle east.

  7. marinm

    Cato,

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/fasterforward/2011/01/how_egypt_fell_off_the_interne.html

This is interesting in that some members of Congress are pushing for the POTUS to have the same authority/ability with “critical infrastructure”.

As a computer security guy I guess I could argue both sides of the issue but I side with NOT allowing the POTUS to be able to take public companies off the internet. I think that the govt SHOULD use the power of the purse and encourage industry to improve computer security and refuse to do business with companies that don’t but being able to effectively take over thier internet connection and shut them down… that’s just way too much power in the hands of govt. And as seen in the case of Egypt can be used to create a media blackhole.

  8. Cato the Elder

    @Moon-howler

Food prices in some of those countries are up 50%. People get really upset when they can’t afford to buy food. 43% of the world’s reserves are in dollars, and nearly all commodities are priced in dollars. When we run our printing presses it affects the entire world, not just us.

  9. Cato the Elder

Not saying that’s the only cause BTW, but it certainly doesn’t help.

If the canal closes we could easily see 4.00 gas.

  10. e

converting cornfields into ethanol doesn’t exactly reduce food prices either

  11. Big Dog

InsideNova (the N&M site) is reporting parts of Manassas Park have
experienced a new power outage which may not be fixed until Sunday.

  12. Apparently Egypt is more important than Glenn Beck in the eyes of Fox News.

  13. The glossy PWC report that came in the mail last week: Was it published by the county or was it farmed out to one of the chairman’s R buddies?

It sure was free advertising for the Stewart campaign.

  14. Lafayette

Moon-howler :Apparently Egypt is more important than Glenn Beck in the eyes of Fox News.

Much easier to listen and look at Shep. Serious news should always take precident over the clown. 🙂

  15. Lafayette

    Moon,
Did you get two copies like RedDawn and me? I still stand by my original comment…It looks like a campaign flyer. I didn’t see any publishing markings on the shiny report. 😉

  16. Morris Davis

Moon – The only way I could describe the Challenger disaster is surreal. It wasn’t apparent what had happened at first, then there was a lot of confusion and speculation, and it was some time later before it was apparent that no one survived. Seventeen years later, in February 2003, I was stationed in Texas. It was a Saturday and I heard on the news that if we went outside and looked to the south we could see the contrail of the Shuttle Columbia going west to east towards a landing in Florida, so I walked out into the yard. The contrail made a straight line and then splintered. I think what had happened registered quicker that time even though I was hundreds of miles away rather than miles away.

    1. @Moe, maybe you ought to go to a bunker the next time there is a space mission? Is this Typhoid Moe of the Space Race?

  17. Morris Davis

Moon – I have the same effect on real estate and stocks.

  18. @Lafayette

Only 1 I think. I just want to know if the county published them (and several lies) or if the job was farmed out to a Republican buddy like the last $30k expenditure.

    Let’s see…looking around…who to blame?????/ ho ho ho

  19. marinm

The Egyptian rebellion is pretty interesting. I wonder if it was Tea Party inspired.

  20. Lafayette

Conatact the FOIA Queen, perhaps she can get you the answer you’re looking for. 👿

    Blame? bwahahaha!

  21. @Lafayette, I thought you would enjoy that.

  22. Lafayette

Moon, I did see on page that the publication only cost 39 cents to print and mail. The real question is how many copies were printed and distributed. I’m sure there are some “extras” available at the McCoart Blg with all the other informational pamplets in the lobby.

  23. Lafayette

    oops. pamphlets
Moon, I think I feel the same way about these publications as you did the invitations. Not good!

  24. @Lafayette,

We still don’t know if the publication was printed by county services or not.

I sure hope they weren’t printed out across the county line, over in Fairfax like another Stewart mailer.

  25. marinm

I wonder how it’ll play out. Will our Administration back the “people” of Egypt that are yearning for freedom, liberty and the downfall of a tyrant or will he back the “legitimate” govt of Egypt to maintain the rule of law and not interfere in the soverign politics of another country?

Either way he picks people are going to be very angry.

I feel for the guy and the choice he may eventually have to make.

  26. Censored bybvbl

    @marinm
I agree. It will indeed be interesting to see how this plays out. We don’t always like the form of government other countries’ populations choose.

  27. Morris Davis

Justice Clarence Thomas said he failed to report more than a dozen year’s worth of his wife’s income on the annual financial disclosure reports he’s required to submit by the Ethics in Government Act because of a “misunderstanding of the filing instructions.” Those instructions must be pretty complicated and confusing if a Supreme Court justice is incapable of comprehending there meaning thirteen years in a row.

Here is a link to Justice Thomas’ disclosure report for 2009: http://moneyline.cq.com/flatfiles/editorialFiles/moneyLine/reference/scotus/thomas/scotusthomas_2009.pdf

In Section III, entitled “Non-Investment Income” and where the note says “reporting individual and spouse,” there are two parts. The first part requires the filer to list his or her “Non-Investment Income” and Justice Thomas reported money he earned teaching at Creighton and the University of Alabama. The second part is captioned “Spouse’s Non-Investment Income.” It’s easy to see how those three complicated words led Justice Thomas astray. “Spouse” – the person the filer wed. “Non-Investment” – not dividends, interest, or rent that come from investments; i.e., like the “non-investment” compensation Justice Thomas reported that he earned teaching. “Income” – money received, not paid. Having been led astray by those three fancy words, Justice Thomas checked the box “none” for his spouse. Note, too, that the form does not require disclosing how much income the spouse earned, just the source of the income. The information is required so the public can be assured there is no conflict of interest between the public official’s duties and his or her personal interests. In Section IX entitled “Certification,” where it explains that there are civil and criminal penalties for knowingly filing false information, right above where Justice Thomas signed his name, it says all of the information is accurate, true, and complete, “including information pertaining to my spouse.”

Anyone who can’t interpret the phrase “spouse’s non-investment income” might have some difficulty interpreting the Constitution.

  28. Pat.Herve

Clarence Thomas, Charlie Rangel and Tim Geitner should all get together and discuss the complexity of filling out these forms – and decide how the average American is expected to fill out such forms, while they, with all their education, cannot fill them out correctly.

  29. Is everyone ready for the snowstorm on Tuesday?

    @Moe

No one will criticize Saint Clarence. However, Rangel and Geitner had better head for the hills. I would rather Saint Clarence cheat on his taxes than have the cross pollination between his wife and her little tea party going on.

  30. Lafayette

Anyone know a teen looking for summer work? The PWC Park Authority is holding a few job fairs in February.
    http://www2.insidenova.com/news/2011/jan/30/park-authority-announces-job-fairs-ar-808892/

  31. Thanks for posting this Lafayette. I know someone I will tell.

  32. If Justice Thomas broke the law, or if the case needs to be investigated, go for it. I don’t have a problem with it. Just because he’s one of my favorites doesn’t make him untouchable. If he’s breaking the law, lets not have it run on as long as Rangel’s shenanigans…..I mean, who does he think he is…….. a Congressman?

After a quick glance at the darkside I have to say that one of the best things that happened to the Manassas/PWC communities was the creation of this blog and its predecessor. The first time I read the darkside was during the Steve Chapman episode. My jaw dropped at the inanity and bile then and did so again during the immigration brouhaha. In fact it was the hate generated by the immigration discussion that first forced me to take a stand and post. I see that the latest target is Bull Run Unitarian Universalist Church (not that it hasn’t been a target of Greg’s bile before). So… I have to say “Thank you, ladies, for being the civilized, considerate, generous people that you are. You stand in stark contrast to that site.”

  34. Black Velvet Reporter

Look out! Gospel Greg is back and in full force. He even has his minion chiming in.

Condemn! Hell, fire an dbrimstone! I know what God thinks!

What horrible examples of Christianity. It must not be a day for Beatitudes.

Elena and Moon, time to post that video.

  35. juturna

The “send them home with love” video? That’s not Christianity – that’s jihad christianity the kind that justifies hatred and has been hijacked by some to use it as a weapon.
    Bad memories of that diatrabe.

  36. punchak

Morris Davis @ 15:45 – re interpreting the Constitution

I just KNEW there was a reason why Thomas never asks a question in the Court.

  37. punchak

The ignorance when it comes to the Unitarian church on the other blog is beyond belief. Well, let me add the hatred, whitehot hatred.

  38. juturna

Nah, this behaviour isn’t worthy of such a strong emotion – hatred. It’s weaker, it’s just fear. Fear of what can’t be understood or what is different. The kind of fear usually found among the uneducated.

  39. I don’t expect they learned that meanness in church.

That kind of talk has lead to all sorts of ugliness in history. The killing of Joseph Smith leaps to my mind. It is simply unAmerican.

This country was founded on being able to worship as one chooses. There have been a few road bumps but I thought we were past that kind of ugliness. Guess I was wrong.

  40. Censored bybvbl

You know, it’s one thing for Greg to have his own blog and spew whatever hatred he desires to spew at whatever target. He has to suffer the consequences of his actions and it appears that he’s suffered a good shunning by many of his former followers. What I don’t understand is the willingness of any local businessman or government entity to associate with him. It just makes it hard to say that they don’t approve of his message – and if that’s the case, a good shunning of their endeavors may be in order. It’s ironic that one of the persons most responsible for giving Manassas a black eye is now slopping at their trough.

Punchak, I’ve often wondered if the most odious posters at bvbl are opposition plants because it’s hard to believe there are such ignoramouses out there.

  41. juturna

Censored – when Fimian’s campaign folks called me, I told them I wouldn’t consider him at all becuase of his association with BVBL. They had no idea what to say. I thought about writing to Sen. Allen and tell him the same thing. His banner is accross the top of BVBL. In fact, how about lots of us write Allen and let him know. CC the Va Republican Party.

  42. Censored bybvbl

Juturna, that blog and HSM has had an incestuous relationship with the Republican Party. VPAP shows money from the Republican Senate Victory PAC being funneled to HSM. Wouldn’t that usually have been funneled the other way around – as a donation to the Republican Party? At least the local Manassas City Republicans countered with a more moderate, sane slate that won. (I agree that politicians should be judged by their choices.)

  43. juturna

I wonder what HSM’s tax status is…. Anyway, I’m going to write to Allen.

  44. punchak

    juturna

    I just did—

  45. juturna

Yeah, that’s two. I can’t tell if Allen is paying for that or not. Fimian had a link down the side of the page.

  46. DB

Anyone else beenn outside and noticed all of the helicopters flying around headed toward dulles. Strangely enough, there are no planes in the landing pattern as there usually are this time of night.
