Here’s a list of the city events for those 4 days (plus the Peace Jubilee on PWC property within the city limits at the Courthouse), but there are plenty of events leading up to July – its not just about those 4 days.
Maybe it’s the Girl Scout in me, and all those hours spent acting as volunteer tour guide in DC and Maryland — whether we want to spend the money or not, whether we want to be welcoming or not, the international spotlight is on Manassas because of this commemoration, and people are coming. Let’s have water and portapotties and a welcome mat. Those of you who want to make money off of this, do so. But whether we recoup a dime or not, it is our responsibility to offer hospitality because of the ground we’re walking on — we are caretakers of history by living in a historic area. People in Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg have been through it. And actually, because of the “sprucing up” they benefitted afterward. Let the spotlight shine on the city, and people watching from afar will come here in less hectic times.
As for the meaning of the commemoration, I think when people explore history it helps them heal and not repeat mistakes. One of the most peaceful places in the city is the grounds of the Jennie Dean memorial.
I was vacationing in Mexico, or maybe that was the 7-11 in Woodbridge. I get those two confused at times. Anyway, it’s been much more relaxing not having to spar with people on a daily basis. There really isn’t any intense topics to discuss it seems. Although those folks wanting to hold a demonstration in front of the White House to establish Sharia law in the states could sure get me started.
SA, just out of curiosity, have you ever complained to the owner of that 7-11 in Woodbridge? Have you written a letter? It really is up to them to involve the police. That’s where it starts. That 7-11 has always had people hanging out at it, even 20 years ago.
@Moon-howler
The sober ones are there too, Moon. The reason it causes 7-11 customers a problem is the fact that they leave the “sanctuary” property of the church, and confront customers requesting work before some can even get their motor turned off. I had this happen to me one time at that location. Nobody wants a stranger at their driver’s door window before they get out. I can tell you the minute I got my camera out to take their picture they went back to the “sanctuary” property of the church.
For those that are not familiar with the “infamous
” 7-11 in Hoodbridge, here you go.
You can see with your own two eyes what that hell hole looks like. And I do agree that has ALWAYS been a seedy 7-11 and ALWAYS will be. imho http://good-times.webshots.com/album/561176744SAXMFv?start=0
I am beyond familiar with that 7-11. I worked in that area for 11 years.
It got easier to go to Giant. That 7-11 has always been rough and not just from Latino day laborers. The 7-11 needs to do something about it if day laborers are hanging out on their property. They don’t because they want the money. Its all a matter of greed. If people continue to shop at that 7-11 they are perpetuating the problem.
Last time I tried taking someone’s picture who was bugging me was at the state Republican convention when Ollie North was running. Can’t remember the year. But that person threw me down, broke my camera, and stomped me a few times before Mr. Howler and my friend Tom escorted him rather roughly from behind our booth. They had not been there at the time Mr. Thug decided to teach me a lesson for thinking for myself.
Moon, I know you are very familiar with the 7-11, others might not be so much. Well, people sure can’t go to Giant down there anymore. I agree no business owner is going turn away the once almighty dollar, no matter WHO is doing the spending. I only go to the 7-11’s that I’ve not seen a day laborers at. I will add, as you well know the Coverstone 7-11 has been questionable spot since the 70’s. I will never forget seeing a man getting stabbed there around 10 yrs old. I’ve avoided that going in that store like the plague.
@Lafayette, I never go there. Last time I went there was many years ago. That store has bad Karma.
I don’t stop at stores that have men just hanging out front. I don’t care who they are or why they are hanging. It could be the local baseball team. I wouldn’t stop if they were hanging out front.
What the hell were you doing at a Republican convention? I can honestly say I’ve only had one person get pissed about my camera. And that stupid q-tip headed bitch got an ear full from a Richmond police officer for harrassing me in a public park. I still want to know who that individual is. She was security for Ricky Juarez’, John Stienbach, and none other than Nancy Lyall’s fiesta in Monroe Park. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2435299270102412507rFrZHu
@Pinko, people can sanitize a war until it literally shines.
A real smack back to reality is the story of the Confederate soldiers being so hungry they fought to walk behind the mules who were getting a small amount of corn. Now that is hungry.
I grew up in NE. Went to Revolutionary War reenactments, walked Paul Revere’s Freedom Trail, that kind of thing. Don’t recall many activities revolving around the Civil War, though debate was common.
Pinko, I spent some of my childhood in upstate New York. I remember the emphasis on the Revolutionary War and not the Civil War. I suppose the sesquicentennial activities will follow the battles which would put most of them in the South. I’m sure Gettysburg and the surrounding area will have some extra programs though.
The National Civil War Musuem is up in Harrisburg, PA. They operate in conjunction with the Smithsonian. An impressive place to visit, and also has a listing of events…of course, come time for Gettysburg, Pennsylvania will really get going.
The National Musuem of Civil War Medicine is up in Frederick, MD. And once Walter Reed Medical Center closes up for good, a lot of the historical items maintained from this War will be transferred to Frederick.
Spoke to some of the aging “maidens” at a re-enactment of the Peace Jubilee
some years ago, and those chosen to represent “Damn Yankee States” in 1911
were , many decades later, still miffed about it.
@Lafayette
I went back and looked at the old threads when you proposed this update. I do not think that PWCTP was shy in speaking about his/her perspective. I may be wrong, in reading the information in the posts, I just doubt he/she will contribute. again.
@clueless
You’re right they are not shy on this subject or any subject for that matter. I’m wondering if they’ve been put in moderation. I know I had one hunch about PWC TP, and they came along and proved me wrong.
Though the City is very involved in the Civil War Sesqui, the County I believe has a lot more going on. The CVB’s website includes ALL activities in Prince William AND Manassas and has an online ticket resource. Check out http://www.manassasbullrun.com for the all inclusive website
The Civil War Sesqui is a nationwide commemoration….not celebration. Not all states have jumped on board, but I think the states that had the most CW activity are participating, thus mainly southern states where the war was fought. Pennsylvania is very involved, but I think Virginia is in the lead.
It is a shame that the City is spending 400K on all this, but most of that is for HMI, NOT the museum. They are still talking MORE job cuts at the Museum. The political connections that HMI has in Manassas has led to a degradation of the Museum and an increase in the HMI budget with no govt. oversight…its a shame. The County’s nearly 700K being spent on the CW Sesqui is coming from Tourism Occupancy Tax (hotel occupancy tax) NOT general fund money, where the City is spending General Fund money. The County has it right this go around…
As for the silence from PW Taxpayer, my theory is he is no longer with us….
@PWCOvertaxed
As for your theory, I thought the same thing at first. However, PWC TP has been around since last December. I was so convinced my shared theory was right, that I called them out and they have posted plenty. When their post showed up that shot my theory down.
Good post. PWC could bring in a lot more TOT money in, if we only had a full service hotel in the county. I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Now, if Disney had been allowed to have Disney America here, we would. I would have much rather seen Disney here than the Vinyl Villages that built the area up anyways. Disney would’ve generated revenue, instead we have tons of houses we need to provide services for
Since the County has probably 99% of the Transient Occupant Tax, and Manassas having the 1%, where can the City pull funds supporting the events except from the General Fund? It is not so much the County got it right, just the County has the base funds to tap, which the CVB gets the majority of the anticipated $1.8million+ The CVB also gets an annual transfer from the City General Fund per the agreement with PWC.
And as for HMI getting the funds, they are an Independent Nonprofit which is able to do more – and this is EXACTLY equal to the CVB since it too is an Independent Nonprofit. The Musuem is a Government Entity thereby making it constrained on what it can or cannot do.
The Musuem is being boosted with two one-year restricted Living History Interpreters (boosting to FTE 9); $76,000 for the Candy Factory plus an additional $4,500 for Water Heater and HVAC; $2,500 for maintenance of the Carter Speiden House; and a projected reduction of $15K+ in MUSEUM STORE SALES. That is the weakpoint in the Musuem Budget.
That weakpoint may change depending upon what happens over the four days in July. The Musuem also last year only anticipated $1000 in donations in FY11 and received $6000.
Turning back to HMI, they are under contract to the City. That contract was vetted through the Council’s Land Use/Comm Devl/Econ Devl Committee, and two opportunites for public hearings for the Citizens to step up. Given the amount of revenue HMI generates by running events vs. the cost of the contract, I would say (as an old Federal Comptroller and Contracting Officer), that contract is “petty cash” compared to the revenue generated.
And at least in the City, our contracts have enough checks and balances they did not need a complete overhaul of the process like the County did.
Here’s a list of the city events for those 4 days (plus the Peace Jubilee on PWC property within the city limits at the Courthouse), but there are plenty of events leading up to July – its not just about those 4 days.

Will Fernandez have a new banner dreamed up to highlight the event? He’s such an Old Town supporter don’t you know.
There he is!!! I was just asking about you, Second Alamo. Where on earth have you been?
I hope Mr. F doesn’t feel compelled to embarrass himself.
Welcome back, SA!! I’m sure he’ll have something planned.
Moon Senor F doesn’t just embarrass himself. He always leaves a black eye of some sorts.
Now where’s that PW Taxpayer. This is a favorite topic of theirs. 🙂

SA, maybe if you ignore them they will go away…re Sharia law.
“The National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, is publishing a newsletter devoted to news about Manassas National Battlefield Park.
Volume 1, No. 1 of “The Sentinel” is free and can be found at various spots around the area.”
SA, just out of curiosity, have you ever complained to the owner of that 7-11 in Woodbridge? Have you written a letter? It really is up to them to involve the police. That’s where it starts. That 7-11 has always had people hanging out at it, even 20 years ago.
It does NO good to contact 7-11. Those drunken day laborers stand on church property, which 7-11 has NO control over.
Do the sober ones stand on church property also?
Why does it bother 7-11 customers if they are on church property?
Those are my old stomping grounds. That 7-11 never cared who was just hanging out.
That picture, by the way, is a Sutler’s tent.
I forgot to label it.

@Lafayette, tabling with Republicans for Choice at the State Convention. I had volunteered to staff the tables while the others all went off to lunch.
I thought this thread was supposed to be about the Sesquicentennial.
Not unless you think the sutler tents look seedy and don’t like the looks of the women camp followers.
I know you are upset Lafayette, but there are former Girl Scouts present!
No war is attractive.
@Pinko, people can sanitize a war until it literally shines.
A real smack back to reality is the story of the Confederate soldiers being so hungry they fought to walk behind the mules who were getting a small amount of corn. Now that is hungry.
Out of curiosity, are there many sesquicentennial celebrations in the North or West or is this just a southern thing?
@Censored bybvbl
Is it a celebration or commemoration? I think of it as the latter.
Don’t know if the north does anything outside of the schools. Interesting question.
Well…there is the NE Civil War Museum. Who knew?
http://www.newenglandcivilwarmuseum.com
Here are other event listings: http://www.newenglandcivilwarevents.com/150th-Connecticut-Civil-War.html
Probably more out there.

@Lafayette
Lafayette,
I may be clueless but I doubt that we hear from PWC Taxpayer.

Why’s that? Perhaps because they have a different perspective than most here.
