From News and Messenger:

Del. Bob Marshall is at it once again. In a recent diatribe before the Virginia General Assembly, Marshall chose to compare scientists doing stem cell research with World War II Nazi “doctors” who performed “experiments” on hapless Holocaust victims.

Marshall’s conduct in this case is reprehensible and to make things even worse, it has been learned that Mr.

Marshall has never been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington to see what really took place. He invokes the Holocaust and Nazism when it fulfills his need for publicity.

Shame on him for using a Nazi comparison to impugn the good works of honest scientists seeking cure to horrible diseases and conditions.

15 Thoughts to “George Harris: Marshall comparisons stretch limits of taste”

  1. Excellent letter, George! How long are the people of the 13th going to keep electing this guy? do they just not care? Years ago Marshall wrote a booklet about working a precinct. It basically called for one block at a time, using church people, if I recall correctly.

I like my church and state separate, thank you very much.

Good job George! Mr. Marshall must feel like his “causes” deserve special privledge and therefore he is able to ignore the recent national debate on the misappropriation of the Holocaust by elected officials, not matter what party they represent.

Moonhowler, he just seems unbeatable. Maybe with the new districting, more progressive people will fall into his district.

  3. George S. Harris

No question in my small mind that he has a church “agenda”–he just won’t come out and say it. I, too, believe that church and state don’t belong together. Thanks for posting this.

I posted this on the other Marshall thread, but I think it bears repeating:

“Marshall is a big member of All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas and does MUCH of his fundraising there.

I find it ironic that he accused you of disliking catholics. Marshall gets his orders from the Clergy at All Saints and the DC/NOVA Diocese, and in return they give him $$$$$. His policies are so chocked full up the arse with pre vatican 2 brimstone, apparantly he is afraid people can see through the veneer – hence his comment to you.

I can only hope that the people of Manassas can oust this thug theocrat who hides behind his church to act and legislate like an @sshole.”

  5. Not Me, Bubba

Me, I will never forget his comments about women who had abortions were punished “BY AWLMITEE GAWD” with children with disabilities/special needs when they did decide to have kids.

That right there is an abominable comment, and if his district keeps electing him, it says a lot about their “morality” and “intelligence”

    Thank God I moved…..

  6. Readers need to be reminded that Bob Marshall got his start with Judie Brown of American Life League. That group is a national group out of Stafford, VA. They work hard against birth control.

This organization also worked very hard against Planned Parenthood. Check out their bunny in a blender video. It is far to tasteless to post on this blog.

OMG! A politician dropped the N (Nazi) bomb!!! Say it isn’t so!!!

  8. Juturna

I really hate drawing lines that all Catholics or all Republicans are for or against abortion…. The RNC health plan certainly didn’t draw that line…..

How can he take money from the same people that do all they can – as is their mission – to care for the poor, the needy regardless of situation and even those that are not here legally???? He hates singles moms. That’s a Narthax Catholic. Their beliefs only hold to the door of the Church.

I have no use for hypocrites nor do I think their opinions have any value. He frequently said women should stay at home to care for their families until HIS mother in law stood to lose her daily adult day care funded partially with PWC tax money. Then he was all for family support funding…..

For some, when they don’t need the government no one else does. When they need/want the government they can’t get it fast enough or enough of it. Disgusting.

  9. When I was active with the pro-choice movement, most of my friends were Catholic. I also worked with Republicans for Choice. Juturna is right. We cannot broad-brush.

On the other hand, different people have different visions of their faith. I think it if fair to say that church teachings are against abortion. However, I have a huge, huge problem with various bishops and other clergy denying communion to politicians who support choice or who don’t vote as the clergy sees fit. That is just getting a little too close to home rule by the church for my tastes.

    Juturna,
You are absolutely right about the senior day care funding regarding Del. Marshall. That was one of less than a handful of times I agreed with him. However, I don’t feel or his wife would have been fighting for that cause, had they not had a dog in that fight. I know I spoke one time in between them on the issue at Citizens’ Time.

I know several Catholics that are pro-choice, but unfortunately there are those that say they aren’t Catholic because of that. I believe the bumper sticker reads..YOU CAN’T BE PRO-CHOICE AND CATHOLIC.

    Not me, Bubba,
I don’t think he’s the only politician using All Saints for their political agenda/raising funds. What a crying shame. I thought our Constitution called for seperation of state and church. Too bad the Commonwealth has so many that feel the need to inflict their religious beliefs into our laws.

  11. Juturna

and you can’t be Republican and pro-choice. It’s all just weak generalizations and labeling. Waste of time and breath. I agreed with the funding for the program but was sickened to see how he jumped in and why.

  12. All Saints certainly isn’t the only church that is mixing it up with politics.

  13. Not Me, Bubba

YOu’re right – it’s not the only one. But it is one of the largest, if not THE largest Catholic Diocese in the NOVA region. Lots o’cash pours into that “place of god” Who knew Christ needed fundraisers?

  14. Juturna

I don’ think the church politicized the poor and the needy. The poor and the needy come with issues that are beyond the scope of the mission of care.

  15. Juturna, and yet the church has been severely criticized by some locals for its attempt to care for those in need–in particular, caring for immigrants.

In my world, that’s what churches are supposed to do–care for those less fortunate.

I wish all of them would care for those less fortunate and stay out of politics.
