So was there something here for you?  Stewart even addressed Emma’s concern.  You gotta love a guy who covers everything.   Squirmish?  OMG.  Dan Quayle has returned.

35 Thoughts to “America at Not-War: The President clarifies our “Squirmish””

  1. Dan Cooper

Want to make fun of Joe Biden? Too easy, he is a joke already.

Want to hate Obama? No, don’t want to hate Obama and never did. Just don’t agree with his policy decisions and sick of his lies and hypocrisy. But any criticism of him HAS to be hate or racism, right?

Make fun of Sarah Palin and her Palinisms? Eh, will this ever get old with the left? She doesn’t hold any public office and is not running for anything and even if she did she wouldn’t win. If it wasn’t for the daily Palin articles (sometimes multiple daily articles) in the Huffington Post and the like nobody would be talking about her.

  2. Dan Cooper

Just happended to take a look at the Huffington Post and there are no less that 5 Palin articles just on the front page alone.

  3. Not if she keeps supplying such fresh new material. Squirmish? Holy cats, that’s lame.

Dan Quayle had the same problem. See where it got him.

Did you even watch or just engage the mouth?

  4. Elena

Let’s not forget her beginning statement “I am not KNOWING do we use the term war…..”

She had me at this fabulous grammer of “not knowing”…………

Dan, you clearly don’t watch Stewart as he HAS been very critical of Obama AND the dems, just for different reasons that he is of republicans. It might be helpful to actually watch Stewart before commenting.

  5. marinm

I think Stewart nailed it. I personally like squirmish. I think it fits.

Funny, I didn’t think the Hope and Change agenda meant still fighting two wars and adding another “just in case”.

  6. Dan Cooper

just engaged the mouth, don’t have much time, got a sick baby.

  7. Elena

Marinm, did you hear Hillary Clinton on using military might? It was very interesting, in fact, the most credible reason for going in with our military power.

  8. Elena

hope your baby feels better, what’s wrong?

  9. marinm

    @Elena

The vid is 20 mins so I’ll need to wait till after work to view. But, I’ll take a look…

Before watching the video I’ll say it’s fun watching the Bush Doctrine alive thru Obama. Bush III: The Audacity of Hope and Change in the Middle East.

  10. Elena

What I liked about her defense of military action was pretty simple actually. France and Britain had our back in Afganastan, especially Britain, and this time, they asked for our help. Pretty basic concept really.

Having said that, comparing Iraq to Libya is not remotely equal. Also, the Bush Doctrine was not at all about joint committment backed by NATO, in fact, it was the antithesis. We are NOT going it alone, there is no premise that we are invading Libya to protect American citizens from WMD’s, in fact it is the exact opposite. You may want to rethink your hypothesis.

“The security environment confronting the United States today is radically different from what we have faced before. Yet the first duty of the United States Government remains what it always has been: to protect the American people and American interests. It is an enduring American principle that this duty obligates the government to anticipate and counter threats, using all elements of national power, before the threats can do grave damage. The greater the threat, the greater is the risk of inaction – and the more compelling the case for taking anticipatory action to defend ourselves, even if uncertainty remains as to the time and place of the enemy’s attack. There are few greater threats than a terrorist attack with WMD.

To forestall or prevent such hostile acts by our adversaries, the United States will, if necessary, act preemptively in exercising our inherent right of self-defense. The United States will not resort to force in all cases to preempt emerging threats. Our preference is that nonmilitary actions succeed. And no country should ever use preemption as a pretext for aggression.”

  11. Elena

just to clarify, the paragraphs in quotes are the Bush Doctrine.

  12. marinm

    * Haven’t seen the video yet so appologize if the video covers it

So, with Bush we were told it was WMD’s. That was simple for us to understand. WMDs in the hands of bad people that could be used on us is bad. Very bad. So we needed to go in and kick butt.

What exactly is the threat to the United States over a Libyan civil war?

I understand that this is a coalition (of the unwilling) but if one bully recruits more bullies to pick on someone does that change it from wrong to right?

Hearing his speech and listening to the pundits I’m still left with the same question. Why are we doing this? If this is about ‘human rights’ then why haven’t we sent in the Marine’s into Detroit, DC, or Chicago? Those are some cesspools that need fixing.

Not saying that we shouldn’t kick ass and lay waste to any country that threatens us but Libya? Really?

    3 wars, really?

We may need to fire more public employees and cut more services to pay for this 3rd war. You square with that?

  13. Dan Cooper

    @Dan Cooper

Thanks Elena, just a nasty cold. We all have it, me, the wife and my 1 year old. My son seems to have it the worst. Getting better but the lack of sleep is starting to get to us, we are all walking around like zombies. Sleeeeeep… must… get… sleep…

Sleep is soooooo under rated, until you get none you have no clue. I thought that the newborn phase was bad. It has nothing on a bad cold, nothing, nada, zilch.

  14. @DC you are right. Colds and toddlers is a trip in to hell. If it goes into his ears, just run away from home.

When mine were little you could just pump them full of cold medication now. I think that is frowned on now.

  15. Dan Cooper

    @marinm

You and me both… my question is what in the HELL are we doing anything if we don’t go after the head of the snake? If it’s for what the administration claims why do we do NOTHING in other countries where there are real human rights violations going on, not potential violations?

Well, after reading everything I could find, between naps and meds and rocking and cuddling, (both right and left) the only logical explanation I can seem to come up with is OIL. We are simply taking the lead in protecting Europe’s energy costs point blank and disguising it as a humanitarian effort. There is no other explanation I can come up with or find. If it was humanitarian in nature we would be in several other countries that have DOCUMENTED and CURRENT atrocities going on.

I welcome any other hypothesis as to why we are doing what we are doing in Libya, I am open to ideas.

  16. Dan Cooper

    @Moon-howler

Bad news Moon, it’s already progressed into the ears 🙁

Never knew that could happen until now and your right, meds are frowned upon. As a matter of fact I spent 5 hours in the ER the other night (chest x-rays, blood tests, etc…) only to be given a prescription, for Tylenol for the typical every 4 to 6 hours. I wanted to do one of two things, punch the doc in the face or just cry.

  17. Dan Cooper

Boy is this telling…. (about what is going on in Libya and Obamas Nobel prize)

“Chu’s the right guy to do this, he’s got a Nobel prize in physics — he actually deserved his Nobel prize.”

    http://www.theblaze.com/stories/obama-jokes-about-nobel-prize-at-least-the-energy-sec-deserved-his/

  18. By the way…..since we attacked a country that was no threat to our citizens, had not threatened those outside its borders, had renounced nuclear weapons thanks to the Iraqi invasion, and had stated that he had renounced terrorism…..

Is that county now justified to respond in kind? Isn’t it justifiable for Libya to bomb or otherwise attack England, France, Italy, and the US? Whether we call it an act of war or not, THEY think that its an act of war.

  19. Elena

    Dan,
Garlic oil drops are excellent for ear infections. Have you done the ole vaporizer with menthol? I don’t miss those sleepless nights!

  20. Elena

Honestly, what I am irritated about is that we did not use any action in Darfur and that was genocide!

    Cargo,
I don’t necessarily disagree with your points. The reality is that this is about oil and friendship, pretty simple, and yet, this is going to be a very complicated situation in Libya.

  21. Emma

    I see a future of U.S.-armed mujahideen-turned-Taliban.

Wait, didn’t we do that before?

    1. I actually think they will operate in the usa. Sorry, I am in cynical mode this afternoon.

Emma, I did watch Hot Tin Roof last night. You know, we don’t seem to have those kind of pyschological movies nowadays do we? I remember now why I disliked that movie. She was beautiful and he was a hunk though.

  22. Since we are at war with Al Quaeda, is arming them and providing air support for them considered aiding and abetting the enemy?

Pogo was right. “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

If it is aiding and abetting, can we impeach him for it?

    1. I am so glad I never hated Pres. Bush like some of you all hate Pres. Obama. It is just so energy consuming.

  23. @Moon-howler
That wasn’t a sample of hate. That was a legitimate question. He is showing that he is incompetent.

I’m serious. Either we are at war with Al Qaeda or we are not. If the legitimate rebels want arms, let them decide whether they want Al Q’s help or ours. If they want ours, they can kill the Al Q members for us. This administration says one thing, does another, and then says a third thing. This isn’t about hate for Obama. This is about seeing the travesty of foreign policy and hypocrisy involved.

    1. @Cargo, after rolling my eyes, I decided I really need to address something. I don’t think you see it as hate. But it is. You immediately go read things that are going to be anti-obama. It’s what they do.

I just think your information is wrong. You are saying the president is incompetent based on what someone else thinks who has not even 1/10th of the information the president does. Additionally, I feel certain he isn’t making unilateral decisions. Why would either he or Hillary Clinton arm Al Queda? That makes no sense.

Its one thing to dispute policy. It’s another thing to say we are arming Al Queda. You have never made even a neutral statement on Clinton or Obama on this blog that I can recall.

  24. Well….am I wrong?

Btw, how do you do the rolling eyes emoticon?

    1. colon roll colon

no space between colons and roll

  25. marinm

I sort of knew that this would devolve into the Obama vs. the liberty/freedom crowd arguement which is not what this really is about.

The question really is what is America’s role in interfering in the natural development and problems of another soverign nation especially when this country presents NO threat to the United States. To what extent will we intervene? What is the end goal and how does this secure the defense of the United States?

Would we tolerate other countries trying to do the same in ours?

If this is for humanitarian reasons because civilians aren’t able to defend themselves (pardon as I laugh at this because the current administration is no friend of American citizens wanting to arm themselves for self defense) what about Darfur? What about Egypt? What about a host of other countries and lands where government has squashed it’s own people and we we’re silent. I just don’t buy the arguement.

The Al Queda angle was I think first discussed on The Guardian and now the mainstream US media are picking up on it and atleast discussing it… A quick google shows an article or two on CNN International.

As for a neutral or positive statement on Mr. Obama… I like his hair and he’s got nice abs.

  26. @Moon-howler
Actually, its not because of things that I read. Those things confirm my direct observations.

In foreign relations, we have lost respect. President Obama dithers over major ideas. He wants to have it both ways. Afghanistan – He said its the “real” war. Yet, he does not send the reinforcements need, and cuts short necessary operations, even declaring an end date. He insults allies and hugs enemies. He said three different things about Mubarak, and his administration said other things. He threw an ally under the bus, supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. He attacked a country that was no threat to anyone. And now, wants to “protect civilians” as the mission. He thinks that we’re stupid. One cannot protect civilians from a jet. The rebels and civilians are intermixed. Our forces are acting as air support for rebels that include Al Quaeda. He refused to help real democracy forces in Iran, but states that our goal is to help oppressed people everywhere. Well, not in Darfur, Syria, Congo, Iran, Palestine, ….etc.

Domestically, his policies have been corrupt and disastrous. None of his enacted bills have come close to doing as he describes. They are covers for advancing the power of his allies. From the stimulus bills to increasing regulatory power, his agenda has weakened America financially. He seeks to help only those businesses that are connected. He lies during his speeches, baldly AND badly. His programs have done nothing to help the economy and have actually damaged it further. He ignores the courts that declare his actions to be illegal. He refused to seek Congressional authority for this military action, instead relying on the “authority” of the UN.

At this time, a return of the Carter Presidency would be an improvement.

    1. I disagree and that includes the statement about Carter.

  27. Wolverine

Jon Stewart got this one right on the money. Mrs. W sat through both videos and was laughing all the way. All I can say is that I am might happy not to have to go to the Oval Office every morning. Sheeesh — What a frustrating job. I wonder if they have some young staffer back in the White House Communications Office whose job it is to figure out what Jon Stewart might do with the day’s events?

    1. Hopefully you all will catch the Thursday night Jon Stewart. More of the same in the first segment.
