Today is the 146 anniversary of the technical end of the Civil War.  I am not sure it is really over.

The budget crisis has been subdued for a few days.  Will it rain this weekend and will the bluebell festival be ruined?

137 Thoughts to “Open Thread……………………………………………Saturday, April 9”

  1. What do you mean, we didn’t go under? We’re at 10% inflation based on the older, less political modeling. We are at 9% unemployment. Our housing market will not recover for years. Politically connected businesses and groups are getting bailouts and funds. Venture capital is non existent. His spending is making things worse. More inflation is coming. We are getting told by our creditors to stop spending. Why don’t you want to hear about Pelosi and deficits? Her first 1.2 trillion dollar deficit budget came before the crisis. She never submitted it to Bush because he said that he would veto it. She had Obama sign it.

You like the Obama plan? WHAT is the plan? He presented no plan.

And I have stated thing besides bashing “public sector unions, planned parenthood, and pensions,” For one thing, the unions and pensions are state problems, not federal. PP is only a small part of the cost of government.

And did you forget the war in Libya? Obama not only did not talk to Congress, where is the funding coming from? At least the other war was authorized by Congress. War’s aently free. But the war isn’t driving the deficit. Bush was able to run both theaters while only having deficits of 250 – 480 billion. What’s Obama’s excuse?

The entire speech was dishonest. And I’m not the only one seeing that.

Here’s someone that should be considered an authority on economics AND he doesn’t like Ryan’s plan.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703730104576260911986870054.html?mod=WSJ_Opinion_LEADTop

Mr. Obama did not deign to propose an alternative to rival Mr. Ryan’s plan, even as he categorically rejected all its reform ideas, repeatedly vilifying them as essentially un-American. “Their vision is less about reducing the deficit than it is about changing the basic social compact in America,” he said, supposedly pitting “children with autism or Down’s syndrome” against “every millionaire and billionaire in our society.” The President was not attempting to join the debate Mr. Ryan has started, but to close it off just as it begins and banish House GOP ideas to political Siberia.

Mr. Obama then packaged his poison in the rhetoric of bipartisanship—which “starts,” he said, “by being honest about what’s causing our deficit.” The speech he chose to deliver was dishonest even by modern political standards.

and here’s a good explanation of why Obama’s idiotic ideas of taxing the “rich” is just that:

Mr. Obama rallied the left with a summons for major tax increases on “the rich.” Every U.S. fiscal trouble, he claimed, flows from the Bush tax cuts “for the wealthiest 2%,” conveniently passing over what he euphemistically called his own “series of emergency steps that saved millions of jobs.” Apparently he means the $814 billion stimulus that failed and a new multitrillion-dollar entitlement in ObamaCare that harmed job creation.

Under the Obama tax plan, the Bush rates would be repealed for the top brackets. Yet the “cost” of extending all the Bush rates in 2011 over 10 years was about $3.7 trillion. Some $3 trillion of that was for everything but the top brackets—and Mr. Obama says he wants to extend those rates forever. According to Internal Revenue Service data, the entire taxable income of everyone earning over $100,000 in 2008 was about $1.582 trillion. Even if all these Americans—most of whom are far from wealthy—were taxed at 100%, it wouldn’t cover Mr. Obama’s deficit for this year.

And this is why I said that Obama talks a good game, but doesn’t want to change a thing.

Lastly, Mr. Obama came out for a debt “failsafe,” which will require the White House and Congress to hash out a deal if by 2014 projected debt is not declining as a share of the economy. But under his plan any deal must exclude Social Security, Medicare or low-income programs. So that means more tax increases or else “making government smarter, leaner and more effective.” Which, now that he mentioned it, sounds a lot like cutting “waste and abuse.”

    Obama lies. Jobs die.

  2. This site has a chart that is an eye opener about the projected deficits under Obama’s plans.

  5. So, which female contributors of mOOnhowings will contribute to saving the Ta-tas?

  6. Starryflights

Bill Clinton managed to eliminate debts in eight years by marginally increasing taxes on the wealthiest 1% of Americans. The Republican plan seeks to do so in 20 years, entirely through spending cuts. That is totally unrealistic. We need to raise taxes and cut defense spending if we are serious about reducing deficits.

Cargosquid :So, which female contributors of mOOnhowings will contribute to saving the Ta-tas?

LOL.. Idea for a calander. The Girls (or Women) of Moonhowlings. Lefties for the first 6 months and the Conservatives on the final 6 months. 😉

I brought this up to a female coworker and she had an awesome idea.. Maintain the illusion that it’s women participating but in the end spray down guys in white t-shirts. They can even tear them off and show pecks legally.

Moonhowlings neither approves of or supports this endeavor.

  9. Elena will provide the reasoning to the above response.

  10. Elena

Too often, women view themselves based on the size of their breasts, either too small, too big, etc etc. So much of how a woman feels about herself is wrapped up in her body image. Now you throw in breast cancer and how that can alter a womans image forever and the idea that you would have a wet tee shirt contest to “celebrate” women and their fight to survive breast cancer is simply a complete contradiction.

  11. @marinm

Not even in your wildest dreams.

I would support a firefighters of Prince William Calendar any day of the week.

  12. Big Dog

    Agree with you Eleana.

There are numerous venues and activities used to raise funds in the Manassas
area and while I fully support these worthy causes, including the fight
to stop breast cancer, I don’t think a wet-t-shirt contest is a good idea.
    It, indeed, is a contradiction.

    @Big Dog
I hope KK rethinks this idea and chooses a more appropriate way to celebrate the awesomeness of women! I for one, having given birth twice and breast fed both my children, believe women are the REAL warriors of the planet. Men have no idea what it takes to procreate! Well, let me rephrase, they have no idea what it takes to GROW the baby and then give birth, and then recover from giving birth, they only participate in the fun easy part 😉

  14. Big Dog

According to KK’s website Old Town Manassas was “too hot” for
the event and it has been moved to the BackYard Grill in PWC.

  15. Big Dog

Correction: The proposed event was “too hot” for Old Town Manassas.

  16. Wolverine

Hah, the fun and easy part indeed!!! Does that include the: “Dad, I need more allowance.” Does that include: “Dad, I just broke my leg at football practice. You need to be at the hospital.” Does that include: “Dad, can I have the keys to your new car?” Does that include: “Dad, I got a speeding ticket today.” Does that include: “Dad, here’s the tuition bill from the university.” Does that include: “Dad, I don’t care whether you like it or not, you just have to wear a tuxedo for my wedding even if it does make you look like a clown”. Does that include: “Dad, I know you had other plans but I need you to come over and take care of Junior.” The fun part is one thing. The follow-up is a Hell of a lot longer. And PRICELESS!

Wow what a bunch of BS. Can you imagine how many people would have flocked to Old Town for that?

  18. Wolverine, Mothers can get hit with those same scenarios that you just stated. However, I don’t think that is what Elena was talking about. ahem…..she meant the making of the person who is going to borrow your car.

hahahahahaha! Yes Moon, that was the “fun part” I was alluding to 😉

Maryland moves closer to extending tuition breaks to illegal immigrants

By Daniel de Vise, Thursday, April 14, 8:22 PM

With anti-illegal-immigrant sentiment rising in the United States, a growing number of states are considering legislation that would forbid public universities from offering in-state tuition breaks to illegal immigrants.

But this week, the Maryland legislature, dominated by Democrats, took a step in the opposite direction, voting to guarantee in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) is expected to sign the bill.

    This is good.

  21. Wolverine

Well, now, ladies, I knew that!!! It is just that for old Dad things aren’t exactly slam, bam, and thank you, ma’am. If you get my drift, you little vixens. BTW, my son-in-law accidentally backed into my car and dented in the door. The fun never ends!!!!!!

    1. @Wolverine

The Good Lord works swiftly for calling us vixens. Just kidding Just kidding 😈

  22. Hmmm, does Maryland offer in-state tuition to military members that have their “home of residence” in another state?

If I mess up these tax forms, I’ll tell the IRS it was all Cato’s fault.
