Five Myths About Planned Parenthood!

Five Myths About Planned Parenthood

1. Planned Parenthood’s federal funding frees up other money to pay for abortions.

Opponents of Planned Parenthood insist that giving the organization federal dollars allows it to spend other money in its budget to provide abortions. That is not possible — there is no other money.

Title X is a federal grant program that exists solely to help low-income and uninsured people access contraceptives and sexual health care; 5.2 million people use the program annually. But Congress has never appropriated enough money to take care of the estimated 17 million Americans who need publicly funded family-planning care. There always are more patients than subsidies.

2. Ninety percent of what Planned Parenthood does is provide abortions.

That is what Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) said this month in a speech against federal support for Planned Parenthood; his staff later said his assertion was “not intended to be a factual statement.”

Here is a factual statement: Planned Parenthood’s abortion care represents 3 percent of its medical services — 332,000 terminations out of a total of 11.4 million services provided in 2009. Nearly all the care offered at Planned Parenthood health centers is preventive services and screenings, including contraception, testing for sexually transmitted infections, pap smears and breast exams. Title X funds cannot be used for abortion care at any time, for any reason. Federal Medicaid funds can be used to reimburse a provider for an abortion when the pregnancy would endanger the life of the woman or resulted from rape or incest.

Babur Lateef Flexes Financial Campaign Muscle Against Corey Stewart

Press Release – April 15, 2011

Lateef raises over $150,000 in 71 days

Woodbridge, VA — Dr. Babur Lateef, candidate for Chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, announced Friday his campaign raised $150,268.01 in the first three months of the year, despite his late entry into the race.

Candidates seeking election in November are required by the Virginia State Board of Elections to file quarterly, pre-election and post-election reports disclosing their campaigns’ contributions and expenditures.

Dr. Lateef noted over half of the contributions came from fellow doctors and medical offices, which encourages him.

“I’m running for chairman in order to serve the community that has given my family so much,” Lateef said. “I am humbled by so many doctors investing in my campaign to bring a new vision to Prince William County.”

Too Stupid to Be Real? Circumcision Proof of Citizenship in AZ!

Utter insanity has hit Arizona and a massive spraying of Haldol  (anti-psychotic drug) may be the only cure!  Moon heard this from Bear, Moon told me,I said “no effing way, this is too stupid to be real”.  Much to my utter shock, after a quick google search, this is indeed true.

http://jonathanturley.org/2011/04/15/arizona-bill-would-require-proof-of-u-s-birth-for-presidential-candidates/

The legislation that would require presidential candidates to produce a birth certificate before they can be on the ballot in Arizona to show that he or she is a natural-born citizen of the U.S. and eligible to be president.

a) Early baptismal or circumcision certificate.

What does this mean for women and those who are NOT baptised or circumcised

(b) Hospital birth record.

(c) Postpartum medical record for the mother or child signed by the doctor or midwife or the person who delivered or examined the child after birth.

(d) Early census record.

2. A sworn statement or form that identifies the presidential candidate’s places of residence in the United States for fourteen years.

C. In addition to the requirements of subsection B, the presidential candidate may also submit a notarized affidavit from two or more persons who witnessed the presidential candidate’s birth.

D. If the secretary of state receives any documents in place of a long form birth certificate pursuant to subsection B, paragraph 1 and cannot determine if the presidential candidate meets the requirements prescribed in Article II, section 1, Constitution of the United States, the secretary of state may establish a committee to assist in the determination or hold hearings and submit any documents for forensic examination.

Now THIS looks like a show, I mean “committee”,  that might require parental guidance!  Does this committee inspect, ahem, private areas for proof of circumcision?  Do they force you into a body of water and if you float you are a witch but if you drown you are G-dly, therefore proving the authenticity of your Baptismal record?

E. If both the presidential candidate and the national political party committee for that candidate fail to submit and swear to the documents prescribed in this section, the secretary of state shall not place that presidential candidate’s name on the ballot in this state. If the candidate and national political party committee for that committee submit and swear to the documents prescribed in this section, but the secretary of state believes that the preponderance of the evidence shows that the candidate does not meet the citizenship, age and residency requirements, the secretary of state shall not place that presidential candidate’s name on the ballot in this state

Gun Fight–HBO on Demand

Several months ago Moonhowlings featured a post on Colin Goddard, a film maker who survived the Va Tech Massacre.  His documentary, Living for 32, has received nationally acclaimed accolades and has been shown at Sundance Film Festival.  It was nominated for an Oscar.  Goddard has traveled all over the United States talking with groups about sensible gun restrictions.

Tomorrow, April 16, marks the 4th anniversary date of that horrible day at Virginia Tech, when 32 students and faculty lost their lives because of a lone, crazed gunman.  It marks the day that Colin Goddard was shot 4 times as he sat in his French class.  This past week, HBO featured the documentary, Gun fight which includes footage from Colin Goddard’s documentary.  Gun Fight examines the many sides of the right to bear arms as well as its restrictions.

According to the Washington Post:

After Goddard became outspoken about gun control, he was enlisted as the subject of a 40-minute documentary called “Living for 32,” about the 32 victims of Cho’s rampage. But at the time of the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007, accomplished documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple already was focusing on the issue of guns in America. Goddard is now at the center of that 90-minute film, “Gun Fight,” which premieres Wednesday night on HBO, three days before the fourth anniversary of the Tech shootings.

Gun Fight fight is available on-demand as of Thursday.

Living for 32 as a stand alone film is not yet available for individual purchase.   Living for 32 can be seen April 19 in at UVA in Charlottesville at Newcombe Hall at 7 pm.  The event requires an rsvp.

Goddard continues to fight for sensible gun regulations.  He travels the nation with his film, Living for 32.  He joined the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and coordinates efforts with that organization.  He did return to Tech to get his degree.   Follow Colin as he recounts his survival of a massacre, goes to gun shows to illustrate how laxgun  laws are, and lives still with a bullet in him.  And the debate rages on.  There are no simple answers, regardless of our opinions or what we think we know.

Open Thread………………………………………..Friday, April 15

Beware of the Ides of April also.  Today is traditionally Income Tax Day.  Moan, groan.

This year taxpayers (and the winos) get a break.  Taxes do not have to be filed until April 18 by 5 pm locally.

Today is also my brother’s birthday. He is rapidly becoming a geezer.  Happy Birthday Raymie.

Is spring really here or is Mother Nature giving us a false sense of security?

Roe hangs by a thread–the explanation

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

If you can’t kill off a law, whittle away at it.   Should Roe be overturned, abortion rights will cease to exist in Virginia.

Here is why there may not be a challenge to the restrictive clinic rules in Virginia.

Don’t try to reassure.  It will no longer work.  We can read the terrain.  I have been voting for a Supreme Court justice for several decades.  This presidential election was no different.  President Obama did not disappoint.

Reps. Gerry Connolly/Dennis Kucinich force an admission from Gov. Scott Walker

Rep. Gerry Connolly forces Gov. Scott Walker to admit that he didn’t specifically campaign on ending collective bargaining, as he claimed during his union busting attempt in February and March.

Firedoglake.com  reports Rep. Dennis Kucinich grilled Walker and forced him to admit that some of his key elements have nothing to do with the budget or saving money.

KUCINICH: Let me ask you about some of the specific provisions in your proposals to strip collective bargaining rights. First, your proposal would require unions to hold annual votes to continue representing their own members. Can you please explain to me and members of this committee how much money this provision saves for your state budget?

WALKER: That and a number of other provisions we put in because if you’re going to ask, if you’re going to put in place a change like that, we wanted to make sure we protected the workers of our state, so they got value out of that. […]

Expensive Blow Up

Kobe Bryant has another scandal.  Bryant had a technical foul called on him. Kobe, not being a mild mannered chap at all, responded.   According to Eurweb.com:

It took place during the 3rd quarter of their game with the San Antonio Spurs after Kobe received a technical foul. The NBA star — clearly upset — screams for ref  Bennie Adams and appears to mouth the words, “F**king f**got.”

I am no fan of Kobe Bryant. But $100,000 fine? Was he fined for the first F word or the second F word?  Team representatives said they could not confirm that is what he said.

Now I am all for not using homophobic slurs.  It is a matter of sensitivity and good manners to refrain from doing so.  But is the punishment really worth $100,000?

ACLU blindsides PWC Schools

School officials in Prince William County were blindsided on Monday with a letter from the ACLU threatening a lawsuit over Internet filters on gay and lesbian sites.  According to the Gainesville Times:

The letter, signed by Rebecca Glenberg and Joshua Block of the ACLU of Virginia, states that the school system is blocking gay support group sites in violation of students’ First Amendment rights.

The issue is filtering software that blocks access to, among other sites, the Gay Student Alliance Network, Day of Silence and It Gets Better.

“The Prince William County Public Schools do not have a legitimate pedagogical basis for censoring students’ access to these websites, which provide support and resources for LGBT students and gay-straight alliances,” states the letter.

PWC Spokesman Ken Blackstone had the following to say on the subject, in the same article:

“The ACLU is making some claims and we’re reviewing them to see if they’re accurate and to see how we can respond to that,” he said. “They bring up important points.”

Blackstone said the school system is required by federal law to use Internet filtering software to keep students and staffers from looking at inappropriate content at school.

The school software, Blue Coat Filtering, filters 32 different categories.  It doesn’t distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate.  Generally, if students or staff believe something is being filtered that is acceptable for use, there is a process by which the site can be reviewed and unlocked.  Mr. Blackstone said that no such request, to his knowledge, has been submitted for  review  of the sites for student appropriateness.

~~~~~Rumors~~~~~
The telephone has rung off the hook today with tidbits and rumors.  The email box has been chock full.  Where to begin….
The Lion and Bull in Haymarket  was the place of Carl Genthner’s kick off campaign for Gainesville Supervisor.  There was a welcoming committee for all who came to meet Mr. Genthner.  It seems that some of the current Gainesville Supervisor’s staff were sitting right outside the meeting room to check out who all was going in and to give a little stare down to the guests.   Fans (Thanks you Mr. Supervisor, thank you) were also there for the official stare down.
correction: there were NO CURRENT staff members from Supervisor’s Stirrups office at Carl Genthner’s kick offevent
Like minded political support was there for Mr. Genthner.
A Dark Blog–A certain blogmeister removed an inflammatory but sizzling exposé about a certain senate macaca candidate and a past RNC chair from his blog.  Did he out-sleaze himself or is there a touch of chivalry still alive?   Do Republicans really practice cannibalism?  It seemed like it reading that exposé.  Now should that person win the party nomination for the Senate, how does one undo the image planted in the minds of Virginians that the gentleman is a home-wrecker and an adulterer?  White-out just won’t cut it.
  Stewart claims that Senator Jon  Kyl (R-AZ) only lied to get his way.  Kyl claims that 90% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion when the actual number is around 3%.   Easy to get 3% mixed up with 90%.
Why do politicians lie?  They want to get their way.  Life is simple.  Now I understand.
Is lying ever justified in politics?  What if you REALLY believe in something?  Or against something?  Isn’t lying just a little ok?
Things got awfully quiet in AZ
The Washington Post:
A federal appeals court ruled Monday that the most contested provisions of an Arizona immigration law passed last year will remain blocked from taking effect, handing the Obama administration a victory in its efforts to overturn the legislation
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that put on hold key provisions of the Arizona law, which empowers police to question people whom they have a “reasonable suspicion” are illegal immigrants. The measure has triggered a fierce national debate, and the legal case is being watched by other states and advocates on both sides of the issue.
In a split decision, a three-judge panel found that U.S. District Judge Susan R. Bolton “did not abuse” her discretion in blocking parts of the law that, among other things, require police to check immigration status if they stop someone while enforcing other laws.
 The 8th Circuit ruling  should not affect how things are run in Prince William County since our law enforcement officers must check all immigration status upon arrest, regardless of the person.  We need to watch carefully to make sure that none of our elected officials get some bee in the bonnet to start it up again.
Another rude townhall participant
Sadly, this behavior ois what many of us have been talking about. This man came to make a statement, not to seek information. He kept everyone else from learning the process because he felt he and what he had to say was more important than anyone else in the room.
When Rep. Moran attempted to explain and answer his rather absurd questions, the man tried to talk over him and interrupt. Did Moran let his Irish show? Yup. And I don’t really blame him. ‘Caustic remarks’ is actually downplaying the rudeness of the remarks made to the congressman.
Rep. Moran has taken some heat from  Faux News and other sources over his response. Naturally, the video was truncated on Faux News and the viewer did not get to see his patient explanation. The audience called it right. They told the man to sit down or leave. His intent was to disrupt.
Time for non-Democrats to stop whining over Moran. The man in the audience got what he deserved…almost. Our senators and congressmen are not whipping boys. They don’t have to take constituent abuse. There is never an excuse for bad manners.  The people in the audience wanted to know how the government closing would impact them.  They didn’t come there to have their time wasted.
