.First GOP Debate: Who Will Show Up?.

    By Neil King Jr.
In an all-around weird beginning to the 2012 election cycle, it should be no surprise that the first 2012 Republican presidential debate would be shrouded in intrigue and mystery.

Yes, the debate will happen, next Thursday in Greenville, S.C. Scads of reporters will show. But who will be there to debate?

The state Republican party isn’t saying. “We will make that clear on May 3rd, after the deadline for filing paperwork for the debate has passed,” said Joel Sawyer, the party’s executive secretary.

Mr. Romney has given no signs of attending. So for now, that appears to leave Mr. Paul and Mr. Pawlenty.

Fearing he may be left to debate himself, Mr. Pawlenty, in a statement Friday, urged others to join him in Greenville. “It’s important that Republicans show up now, talk about their records, and begin the debate on how best we can defeat this President,” he said.

Evidently Tim Pawlenty will debate himself, bwhaha!

Herman Cain Officially Jumps Into May 5 South Carolina Republican Primary Debate, Mitt Romney Stays Out
    May 02, 2011 2:32 PM

    News’ Michael Falcone reports:

Businessman Herman Cain will be on stage at the first presidential primary debate of the campaign season this Thursday in South Carolina, he announced on Monday.

“I look forward to participating in the debate Thursday,” Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, said in a statement. “It gives me the opportunity to share my ‘Common Sense Solutions for America,’ as well as my private sector experience in balancing budgets and creating jobs.”

Republicans must be desperate to run a pizza man as their candidate, bwahaha!

  3. I don’t know, Starry. YOU guys ran a man with absolutely NO accomplishments. So, what’s your point?

  4. Starryflights

I think there’s a bit of a difference between an accomplished United States Senator and a guy who makes pizza. I love pizza, so don’t get me wrong!

  5. Yes, there is a difference between an accomplished United States Senator and a guy who makes pizza.

From Wiki on Godfather’s Pizza: In 1986, Pillsbury named Herman Cain, who had turned around the fortunes of their struggling Burger King chain of restaurants, CEO and President of the brand. Cain in turn led a group to purchase the Godfather’s brand from Pillsbury, which they did by the beginning of 1990.

As you see, Cain didn’t make pizza. His executive ability saves corporations.

Who is this accomplished Senator of which you speak? Is someone running besides President Obama?

    Final Draft

On a day when the media tells us, over and over, that we all should “feel safer”, I strongly disagree. I do not feel safer, and I know that I am not alone. Today, in fact, millions upon millions of Americans feel far less safe than they did that fate-filled day in 2001. Far less safe. And from a far more dangerous enemy.

But the enemy isn’t a fringe militant organization sitting thousands of miles off our shores. The enemy, in fact, is in our midst, where we live. And the damage it has wrought on this nation, and the lives, livelihoods, and families it has destroyed or now threatens combine to make this enemy far, far more menacing, and one that no military can protect us against. Consider:

In 2001, Student loan debt stood at around $150 billion. In less than a decade, this amount has grown to where it now exceeds all other categories of consumer debt, and will be blowing past $1 trillion shortly, if it hasn’t already.

But this debt is different from all other types of debt in this country. Unbeknownst to the borrowers, nearly every fundamental consumer protection was removed from these loans, and the schools, lenders and government conveniently failed to inform the students of this fact. Nor did they bother to warn the citizens that there was a 1 in 3 chance that these loans would wind up in default.

Nor did they bother to inform the public that the big lenders and their collection companies, the guarantors, and even the federal government stood to make far, far more money when these loans when they defaulted rather than remaining in good stead due to the penalties and fees that could legally be extracted from the borrowers through wage garnishment, tax refund confiscation, and even the taking of citizens social security and disability income.

Today, we learned that the Department of Education, which already makes a healthy profit (not loss) from defaulted loans, is planning to even further “ramp up” its collection activities, and stands poised to seized the bank accounts, assets, and even the homes of our fellow citizens in its unholy quest for more of the citizens money, extracted UNEARNED from our countrymen through a structurally predatory lending system.

And yet, we should feel safer?

I read part of this book from the library. I got so mad that I couldn’t finish it. The powers that be have set this system up to keep people under the thumb

  8. Starryflights :I think there’s a bit of a difference between an accomplished United States Senator and a guy who makes pizza. I love pizza, so don’t get me wrong!

I highly doubt the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation was spinning doe and spreading toppings. Also, “highly accomplished” Senator is a bit of a stretch, IMHO. A little intellectual honesty would be refreshing.

I happen to be supporting Pawlenty. Long odds, perhaps, but the odds-on favorite on the Democrat side was Hillary Clinton back when, and we know how that turned out.

  9. Pat.Herve

    Steve – haven’t you watched Undercover Boss…. 😉

  10. Cato the Elder

Bad pun of the day: talk abbotabad place to hide…

  11. @Cato

Check out the Jon Stewart thread on here….just posted. He has a lot to say about Abbotasbad. Totally hilarious.

  12. Emma

In the spirit of the Freedom Thread, I think President Obama deserves a lot of credit for bravely continuing the policies of the Bush administration that led to the killing of one of the worst terrorists in history. Despite the bleatings of the Code Pink left, he took the intelligence gathered from renditions, wiretapping and enhanced interrogations and made a very difficult but ultimately bold and presidential decision. Capture would have been a disaster, as the left would have been demanding Miranda rights and legal representation, and bin Laden would have been given a platform to spew his agenda of hatred and to distort our legal system.

I feel a lot more hopeful for the future of our country.

  13. @cargosquid
Glad you read the book. Collinge is brilliant and has done tremendous work in this field.

  14. @Emma,

I agree he did a good thing. I just don’t know why Code Pink would even be mentioned. Did anyone ever pay any real attention to them? Of course, I came of age during Vietnam so they just seemed….not even yesterday to me.

  15. Glee is featuring Fleetwood Mac music tonight.

  16. Our very own Morris Davis will be on Piers Morgan tonight (CNN) around 9:15.

  17. Great job, Moe. You got to debate a real DB. You won. He lost.

  18. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Moon-howler :
Our very own Morris Davis will be on Piers Morgan tonight (CNN) around 9:15.

You know nobody watches that show, right?

  19. Tonight lots of people watched to see Morris. Moe has too much class to go on Sean Hannity.

  20. marinm

Emma, that was priceless. Over on the Facebook a few of my progressive/socialist/commie friends are really having a tough time squaring away the idea that Gitmo, torture, an assassination, an assault without authorization of a sovereign nation, stealing away a body in front of the man’s kids, etc.. The continuation of the Bush Doctrine..

It puts many in a very awkward position. 🙂

A few of them are now saying we shouldn’t cheer the death of ObL. This is just getting too good.

    Whats a Piers Morgan?

    Glee was..interesting.

  21. Raymond Beverage

Osama Bin Laden arrives at the pearly gates, expecting to meet Allah.

He is stopped and met by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and 69 other Americans.

After a vicious beating, he falls to the ground and cries out to Allah.

“What is this? I was promised 72 virgins upon my arrival to heaven.”.

God calls back..”That was 72 Virginians”

  22. Starryflights

Taking out bin laden is a pretty significant accomplishment.

  23. Emma

But we must always respect the United States Constitution when we take such actions.

  24. Lafayette

    @marinm
I have the same problem with some friends on FB. The thing is, they are not what I would consider to be liberal in the least. I just think they are ignorant and no faith in our intelligence, military, and Commander in Chief. I honetly say, I don’t think they would have demanded proof if GW was still in office.

What’s a Piers Morgan? Really? He’s a Brit that’s been on Celebrity Apprentice and that talent show with Sharon Osbourne. He’s now on CNN in Larry King’s slot. He’s show is pretty interesting usually. I did catch part of it last night, although it did interupt my view of The Voice.

I loved the Fleetwood Mac music from Rumors last night on Glee.

  25. Totally agree on all counts, Lafayette.

Piers Morgan was one of the dudes who discovered Susan Boyle on Britain’s Got Talent. He is the one she wiggled her hips at and said she had never been kissed. Geez, I thought I was the one with the F in pop culture. I have been upgraded to at least a C.

  26. Lafayette

I was just think about you and pop culture. I’m really surprised you watch Glee. The Voice is a “blind audition” competition that just started last week. It’s a great show.

  27. Marin, I think most people (and I emphasis the word most), at least in their own minds, have considered that dancing and cheering over someone’s death runs afoul of all we have been taught. I think it is also fair to say that most of us don’t give a ****.

Any time there is a political assassination I think people of conscience give it a mental tumble. It doesn’t mean don’t do it. It means take it seriously for what it is.

  28. @Lafayette,

Yes, I love Glee. I just don’t remember everyone’s name. It isn’t important in my mind.

I watched a little of the voice last week. I also am a big ONe Tree Hill fan. Because it and Glee run at the same time, I am usually watching One Tree Hill at the 9 o’clock spot.

    re: Glee

That’s one reason I was so outraged that Glenn Beck decided devote a good part of his show to tearing it down. I can’t think of any other contemporary show that is more about ‘family values’ in a more contemporary setting. It really addresses the Golden Rule and how we are to treat our fellow human beings. Maybe I missed something but Beck is totally out of sync with the rest of the world.

@marin real men like Glee. I am impressed that you do.

  29. Lafayette

    Moon,
    Check your email.

I’ve never seen One Tree Hill. The commericials get on my last nerve. So, I feel there’s no way I could watch it.

Ah, the Golden Rule…I was just discussing that one with the Queen last night. I made her so mad with it she huffed off the deck and went inside. I reminded her many of our neighbors could use a lesson the GR. We were on “tad pole patrol” and have a couple for the grandkid. Stop by, as I’m not willing to even touch the container they are in. 🙂

Beck would rag on anything thing, and clearly Glee is not an exception. He’s such a clown. I don’t even think people tune in to be preached to or to see his outlandish ways/thoughts. I know I’ve stopped checking him out for even a few seconds. I really can’t stand to hear that stock up a years worth of food crap. That is a practice of his religious beliefs, not mine. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be prepared, but really a years worth. Furthermore, my house is filled to the gills with kid stuff.

    1. The commercials are geared at teens. That is why the commericials are so putred. I fast forward. I have watched One Tree Hill since the first season. It and Buffy are my two immature shows. Yes, I still watch Buffy reruns.

I will send Mr. H for the pollywogs. I am sure young Howler will enjoy them. He can use them for science at Bob Academy.

Note that the massive influx of American financial aid to “fight”
terrorist is a major source revenue for Pakistan. They realize
that if the danger starts to diminish then so will the money.
    Same thing in Afghanistan.

The trick has been to keep the pot boiling enough to keep the
dollars coming, but not to explode in their faces.

  31. And on another note:

    WaPO:

MOYOCK, N.C. — Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft is joining the security firm once known as Blackwater.

Investment group USTC Holdings, LLC, said Wednesday that Ashcroft is serving as an independent director for Moyock, N.C.-based Xe (ZEE) Services.

They are all in it so thick. How many millions have been made off these 2 wars?

  32. Dan Cooper

Alert!!! If you have invested in either gold or silver in the past 10 years take a look at this… There is a creepy, evil SOB named George Soros who makes TONS of money off of collapsing economies. He is now dumping a bunch of gold and silver:

    http://www.businessinsider.com/john-paulson-gold-headed-to-4000-2011-5

I don’t put anything past this POS, keep an eye on this story…

  33. So anyone who sells their gold or silverf is a POS?

What if they sell their gold or silver stock?

    How about oil and such?

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

  34. He’s selling at a high. I predict all of these sellers will be buying when its lower. The fundamentals of the economy have not changed.

  35. Cato the Elder

Gold and silver are two completely different trades, for completely different reasons.

Anytime you get heavy liquidation in one commodity you see spillage over into some of the others because it’s the same hot money people trading that stuff.

Speaking of Silver, looks like he’s ready for the ol’ glue factory. har har har

  36. SLW will not go to the glue factory! Bummer!

And was that Hi HO or SLW?

  37. Cato the Elder

I was buying a little SLW today as it dipped into 36 bucks, just because it’s at support and I don’t expect it to fall much further. I’m actually hoping for a little more blood so we can get oil back underneath 100 bucks, as that would be much better for the growth story.

No House resolution honoring SEAL’s bin Laden mission
By Russell Berman – 05/04/11 08:52 PM ET

House Republicans say they have no plans to follow the Senate in passing a resolution honoring the military mission that killed Osama bin Laden.

    http://thehill.com/homenews/house/159375-house-wont-honor-seal-mission-with-a-resolution?sms_ss=facebook&at_xt=4dc1fea390ae229f%2C0

The Republicans don’t support our troops.

so, I was watching some pundits last night – and some of them really want to see the photos, and question some of the information coming out of the White House…. but, for some reason, none of them question the, unknown if it is true, assumption that KSM provided information that eventually led to the location of UBL. How do we really know if KSM provided any information that was usable – I am thinking of starting an effort to release the KSM transcripts.

Me thinks that we will not know for a long time how the really found UBL…..

  40. Pat.Herve

and Faux news this morning – does Gretchen really believe what comes out of her own mouth….

  41. Gretchen really is moral-less about that comes out of her mouth. I had to change over to MOrning Joe this morning. What did you hear?

  42. I want to know the same thing from Pat. What did she say? I usually switch off when Doocy gets wound up. He is just a snide, biased person. Mika was a PITA this morning also so I went back to sleep.

  43. Obama wants to tax citizens based upon miles driven. Gas tax receipts have dropped and they are looking at the possibility of people driving for “free” in electric cars. And his push for ultra-efficient cars is self-defeating for gas tax purposes.

Since this is supposed to fund highway maintenance…..shouldn’t that only be on miles driven on interstate highways.

That would be a good way to drive many people back to state roads and the businesses that line them. I wonder how he’s going to tax them if they all suddenly “see the light” and use public transportation?

The feds would have to track your car. I guess 18 cents per gallon isn’t enough.

  44. URL: http://survey.utk.edu/mrIWeb/mrIWeb.dll?I.Project=SOURCES2011

From Instapundit: MY UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE COLLEAGUE BARB KAYE is doing another survey of political blog readers. If you’ve got a few minutes, please help her out by taking it.

It was interesting. Mostly on sources of political news, etc.

  45. marinm

Cargo, I think Cooch used that line at a TP rally not too long ago. He was late to it because he was only driving on ‘state roads’. 😉

I’m still in favor of a sticker on all gas pumps showing how much tax is paid per gallon (to state and federales).

Funny how the federales want us to goto hybrids and electrics and then cry that they aren’t collecting enough from gas taxes to keep up infrastructure.. Short term thinking.

  46. @Cargo, where on earth did you hear/read/see that?

Marin, I don’t think that is a bad idea actually. Everything else has to be labeled.

I don’t think there are enough electric cars out there for the feds to be whining. Right now I will consider it an urban legend.

  47. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/20/mileage-tax-considered-by_n_168506.html

Sorry, its not Obama, but his Transportation Sec. that ran up that trial balloon. Obama rejected it. Got too much heat, I guess. My first source said “Obama’s administration supports it” which is technically right if you consider the Sec of Trans. part of his admin.

    Other sources:
    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20047201-503544.html

In any case…..look! They want MORE money!
