104 Thoughts to “Open Thread……………..Freedom Thread………….Monday, May 2”

  1. I have it on good authority (Yeah right), that, after the funeral ceremony that dropped UBL’s carcass off of the fantail, that the next words of the CO were, “Conning officer, All Stop. All engines,Reverse 2/3’s. Deploy chum.”

    1. That’s probably not a good thing to spread, even if true. We still have a lot of people in harm’s way. They don’t need a bunch of Osama followers bringing out the hounds of hell to avenge his miserable life.

  2. Moon, the bad guys are not going to hate us any more than they do now nor try to kill us any harder. They already want to kill us.

The guys that support OBL will want to kill us and this could make them angry. Angry enemies become dead enemies. It makes them careless.

So, I’m waiting for the clever cartoonists to make fun of this scum bag.

  3. Heck, I make take art classes now that I think about it….

  4. I stand corrected on BAC paying back its TARP. It did. I lied. (inadvertently)

  5. clueless

That is sweet, and I agree with Cargosquid (I can’t believe I just typed that) OBL’s supporters are not going to stop, hopefully they just get more careless. @marinm

  6. Who won the Republican presidential debate? Herman Cain (sp) seemed to score a lot of points. I liked Gary Johnson. I can’t stand Santorum. Pawlenty was ok and Paul was Paul…engaging. And I forget the last one. I didn’t know much about Pawlenty until tonight.

I will say this for Faux News….they did a terrific job with that debate. Their questions were exceptionally good.

GOP debate proves an awkward start in the fight against Obama

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The opening act in the contest to pick a challenger for President Obama in 2012 proved to be an awkward moment for the Republican Party. Thursday night’s candidate debate did as much to highlight divisions within the party as it did to offer a brief for why the president should be denied a second term.

With many of the party’s potentially strongest candidates either choosing not to participate — or still making up their minds about whether to run — the 90-minute debate offered a platform for second-tier candidates to make their case. They took full advantage of the spotlight, but in the process they offered dissonance in the GOP message along with moments of comedic relief to the audience.

That made for a sometimes-entertaining evening for the audience in the hall and those watching on television. But it probably did little to help Republican voters figure out who has the stature and the strength to take on the president in 2012.

Glenn Beck Claims Osama Bin Laden Is Not Really Dead
    May 3, 2011
    By Jason Easley

On his radio show today Glenn Beck claimed that something isn’t right with the story of the death of Osama Bin Laden, and he floated a conspiracy theory that Bin Laden isn’t really dead. Beck said, “Are we seeing a show? Is it possible that Osama Bin Laden has been ghosted out of his compound?”

Beck said, “There is something bothering me and it has to do with the helicopter crash. Getting Osama Bin Laden out, and the fact that we know that Wikleaks says that al-Qaeda has nukes. And here we have the head of al-Qaeda and we shoot him. Reports coming from the Pentagon, he was unarmed. Now why would we shoot a guy? Did we get the information? Could we have done anything with that? Were poll numbers involved, or are we seeing a show? Is it possible that Osama Bin Laden has been ghosted out of his compound, and we’re seeing a show at this point? Watch the other hand. Watch the other hand.”

  9. Just doing what Beck does best–LIE.

  10. Starryflights

I would like to see Beck tell those Navy Seals that they partook in some sort of giant hoax. He really insults all Americans but especially our troops

  11. Lafayette

Here’s a question for you PW residents. How do you feel about funeral homes and mortuaries in a shopping center or retail mall? It seems as though, our BoS will vote on this next Tuesday.

    New agenda link is here
    http://www.pwcgov.org/documents/bocs/agendas/currentagenda.pdf

From the new agenda. Item 8A

Approve – Initiation of Zoning Text Amendment to Permit Funeral Homes/Mortuaries and Wedding Chapels By-Right, and Crematoriums by Special Use Permit in the B-2 Neighborhood Business and B-3 Convenience Retail Districts; and Permit Funeral Homes/Mortuaries By-Right, and Crematoriums By Special Use Permit in the O(L) Office Low-Rise District and Permit Funeral Homes/Mortuaries by Special Use Permit in Shopping Centers and Retail Malls – Nick Evers – Planning Office

  12. Raymond Beverage

    @Lafayette

We just had one such instance of a crematorium application in Manassas. Right across the street from Manassas Junction at the place that does the granite and stone cutting work. Council voted it down.

  13. Lafayette

    @Raymond Beverage
Here’s to hoping our illustrious BoS does the same. Good for the City Council for voting it down. The thought of going to shopping center or mall for a funeral CREEPS me out. I could not do that to a family member/loved one.

  14. @Moon-howler
    Beck didn’t LIE.

    Beck questioned the narrative.

Guess what? People all over the nation, heck, the world, are questioning the narrative.

And those SEAL’s would, if the mission required it, perpetuate a “hoax” in a minute. Obama’s incredibly inept handling of the narrative after the mission generates this type of speculation.

When I heard that Bin Laden had been killed, whisked away, and buried at sea, within hours, my FIRST thought was,”what a great way to take him away and interrogate him.”

And now, when you have the admin refusing to show proof or pictures, stating a need to protect national security, our soldiers, or our sensibilities, but this same admin doesn’t worry about photos or stories that make us look bad, its…questionable.

Do I believe he’s dead? Yes. I listened to Beck that day. He believes that OBL is dead too. But he’s questioning the narrative and how Obama has mishandled the situation.

So, no, Moon, he’s not lying. He’s doing his job. I don’t trust Obama. I want to see the pics. And IF Osama is alive and being held secretly, is it too much to ask that our leaders, at the least, have a competent cover story? Starry is just doing another drive by.

  15. marinm

    @Lafayette

I don’t really have an issue with it.

Me personally? I’d like to go out with a little class. If that’s a free standing building that looks pretty. Great. Hopefully I leave behind a few bucks to get something like that (and a long line of weeping women wondering what could’ve been if I had said yes to them 👿 )

But, what if I were of limited means? What if my family could only afford a crematorium? What if they could only afford a low-budget crematorium?

I say let the market decide and not the government. They won’t get my business but they might get that woman on social security that gets only a $255 death benefit for her husband. Who knows? It’s not ‘my thing’ but I personally wouldn’t shoot it down.

Beck just has an opinion. I don’t think he lied about anything.

  16. Lafayette

    @marinm
Just because it’s in a shopping center, doesn’t mean it’s going to be affordable. The funeral homes on the western end ALL offer creamation services. We’ve burried more family memembers than I care to count over the past 15 years in this county. I’ve not heard anyone say that every place was too expensive. Now, my dad was burried in WVa.(his wishes), and boy the cost was a third of what it would have been in PW, and that included transporting a body across state lines.

That $255 is a slap in the face. I really don’t know what they think one is to do with that small amount.

I don’t want to be buying groceries in shopping center where corpses are being prepared/stored/displayed. It really is creepy. Again, I don’t think that with a location like this will come more affordable services. It’s more affordable/profitable to the business to have cheap rent, then own the funeral home as they do now.

  17. Cato, I appreciate the idea…but….that’s a little too….eeewww…to wear.

But you can get free Osama targets here and make your own bullet holes:
    http://www.luckygunner.com/free-targets

  18. Beck lies because he has an agenda to push. I trust Obama 1000 times more than Beck. Beck is making millions from his minions.

Lafayette, I agree about the funeral stuff. It doesn’t belong in a shopping center.

  19. marinm

Cargo, as it’s creeping closer to July/August I’m starting to man-nest and thinking about things to get the babies to keep them safe.

    Thoughts? http://www.geekologie.com/2009/12/post_78.php

I was thinking about adding kevlar sheets to the side to stop small arms fire. A pindle mounted shotgun for close range heavy support. The baby carrier portion could also sport a self contained breathing system when I deploy a smoke grenade. Coworkers were thinking about MARPAT kevlar baby helmets.

    $600 isn’t too bad for http://www.gearfuse.com/bullet-proof-stroller/

I think the strongest defense is a good offense. So, while the armor plating is fine and dandy the mobile weapons platform (baby carrier) should be able to support at least one long arm, a few handguns and of course creature comforts like a bottle holder and iPod speakers..

  20. @marinm
LOL. I’ll have to keep on the lookout for some items for you.

  21. @Moon-howler
And Obama doesn’t. He’s been caught in bald faced, flat out lies. And he uses the power of the Presidency to push HIS agenda. Even when that agenda demonstrably harms America.

Again, Beck didn’t lie in this case. He questioned the narrative, as have others.

I keep hearing about Beck’s lies, but, I never see any evidence. He’s been wrong. He’s been outlandish. He’s even been…opinionated. But, lies I’ve not seen nor heard.

Obama, on the other hand, I’ve watched lie, over and over.

    1. @Cargo,

This is a pointless conversation. I feel if Obama said the sun rose in the east you would take issue.

  22. Wolverine

Woooeeee, there’s a shootin’ war out there. On Thursday, we launched a drone missile at Imam Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen. Missed him but apparently got two mid-level al-Qaeda types in a car. Sort of like the gunfight at the O.K. Corral these days.

  23. Emma

I think the conflicting narratives on OBL’s last moments are fueling the demand for photographic evidence. The WH needed to get its story straight before taking victory laps. OBL’s dead, I don’t need pictures to prove it, but I can understand the reason for the distrust. And if the President, despite his best instincts, wants to spike the football, it’s certainly understandable. I haven’t stopped cheering yet.

  24. Starryflights

Beck didn’t just question the narrative, he stated flat out that Osama was whisked away alive somewhere, and then accuses President Obama of lying. That is, by definition, lying.

  25. @marin

Trigger safety locks for everything in the arsenal would be a good place to start.

  26. Big Dog

    http://www.slate.com/id/2293232/

Perhaps Dewey was on Elena’s roof doing recon for the C.I.A.

  27. @Starryflights
Not according to that weak attempt by mediamatters.

    He said, “Is it possible…”

Heck, many people have said that. I said that on this site.

Nice try Starry. I listened to that whole show, not 59 seconds taken out of context by Media Matters.

And as for Beck trying to “delegitimize Obama’s achievement with a wild conspiracy theory,” are you saying that Beck is the only one talking about possibilities like this and has that much influence over American opinion?

Beck theorized that its possible that OBL was “whisked away” in an intelligence operation. Heck if this WAS true, Obama would be even more respected when, because it always does, the truth came out.

My first thought, due to the weirdness of the operation, was that OBL was not dead, but taken away, and we wanted the Islamic world to think he was dead.

So, again, your bias has prevented you from achieving reading comprehension again…oh, that AND your reliance on a hackjob site like MediaMatters.

  28. Emma

@Starryflights Who cares? Why would anything Beck say get you so spun up? Is he running for president?

  29. Lafayette

    Censored,
The “annual wild flower sale” was on today. It’s the first time that I can remember in recent years them having decent weather. The odd thing was, there seemed to be less people than when the weather has been nasty. It was still quite a few people. I went one time and that was enough for me. I’m not got run over by folks racing in the rain to get wildflowers. They are nice and all, but I have my limits.

Also, the Rose Garden Tour at Ben Lomond House is today too. I know this one is one of your favs. 🙂

Farmers’ Market had live lobsters today and two different stands with local beef. I saw a couple of my favorite lady city residents while there too.

  30. Lafayette

oops. going to be run over……

  31. Are the roses even in bloom? Seems early. They weren’t in bloom a week ago.

I won’t go to that wild flower thing again. I nearly got trampled and I didn’t recognize any of the flowers or their names.

How much were the lobsters? Were the Bakers there with the pork?

  32. Emma

It’s interesting to see the inverse relationship between the lack of credibility many on the left ascribe to a public figure and the amount of attention they pay to that person. Sarah Palin’s relative silence lately must be driving them nuts.

  33. Morris Davis

The Obama haters and Beck/Limbaugh lovers are going to be Obama haters and Beck/Limbaugh lovers no matter what. In the past week President Obama ended the Trump-ed up birther conspiracy, visited storm survivors in the south, gave a pretty funny talk at the WH correspondents dinner, authorized one of the most audacious and successful military operations in a long time, closed out the Bin Laden dead or alive pledge Bush made nearly a decade ago, visited with first responders and victim families in NYC (and invited Bush to participate) and with military members in Kentucky, encouraged Congress and the country to acts as one, and announced the biggest growth in private sector job creation in 5 years. I know to some that doesn’t begin to compare to the week Beck and Limbaugh had. [I liked Colbert’s comment about Limbaugh calling Obama a “credit-hog,” which Colbert noted is “deeply offensive to Rush and other hog-Americans.]

  34. Cato the Elder

    @Moon-howler

Baker was there, and Chez Cato restocked on the sage sausage. Also recommended are the goat cheese vendor and the hand mixed spices. I didn’t check the prices on the lobsters.

  35. @Emma,

The problem with Beck is that he has a large sphere of influence. If he blathers something stupid on his show, a million ‘believers’ will pick up on it and start spreading it as though it were the gospel.

So rock on Starry. I don’t like the propagation of all Beck’s nonsense either.

  36. @Moon-howler
You see, it not just BECK. A LOT of people, of all political flavors, are doing or did the SAME SPECULATION. Why? Because Obama’s admin can’t keep a story straight.

He killed him. GREAT! He kidnapped him and pretended to kill him, GREAT! Its a win-win! So, this speculation does not delegitimize what happened. That’s why this fake, spun up brouhaha over what Beck said is ridiculous.

I’m just glad that Obama saw the writing on the wall. I give him credit for changing course 180 degrees and continuing the Bush policies and acting on good intel. He may have, as reported, dithered for 16 hours, but in the end, he had the SEALS pull the trigger.

  37. Emma

Is hell freezing over? I imagine the President was thanking his lucky stars for all of the hard work that went on for years before Bin Laden’s demise. He didn’t just flip a switch last Sunday.

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/report-nancy-pelosi-called-president-bush-for-his-role-in-bin-ladens-demise/

  38. Wolverine

I like Mark Plotkin’s take on all this. He also was puzzled about all the conflicting stories coming out of the administration vis-a-vis the operational details of the bin Laden mission. So, he asked one of his contacts in the intelligence service about it. The reply? “It’s amateur hour over there.”

I assure you that this is not unusual in a case like this — in any administration. Those who have never done it do not develop more than a very thin understanding of how it is done. Not unexpected in this business. Unfortunately, no one has ever found a way to use duct tape on the “amateurs” until the official story can be formulated. Politics. Politics. Politics. Then, because of the contradictory statements coming out of the “amateurs,” many of whom are theoretically in charge, the questions, second guessing, and conspiracy theories start. Never fails. That just seems to be the way we are. Beck is just one voice among millions, albeit a larger voice to be sure.

  39. Wolverine

Right you are, Moe. And the Obama lovers and the Beck/Limbaugh haters are going to be Obama lovers and Beck/Limbaugh haters no matter what. Sort of evens out, I would say.

  40. Wolverine

Moon — Is there a technical problem with the thread on the Pakistani Army chief? For the second day in a row, all I get when I hit the comment part is either that Windows cannot bring it up or “404 error page.” Not happening with the other threads. Is it on my end or yours?

  41. It was a pretty big week for the Prez. Whatever he does good makes America good. I don’t care who is in office. That’s just the way it rolls.

Cargo, did you seriously accuse someone else of bias? 🙄

  42. Wolverine, I will check. What browser are you using?

  43. marinm

    @Wolverine

That’s not the first time I’ve heard (“It’s amateur hour over there.”) regarding the ObL operation. I think what’s really hurting him (Obama) is his Press Secretary.

It’s odd because his campaign was solid on keeping and maintaining an image and message. Here they are failing. It doesn’t make sense.

  44. Wolverine

Moon —- I’m on Google with the Windows Internet Explorer.

  45. Is it working for you now?

  46. Wolverine

    Got it. Thanks.
