A very happy Mother’s Day to all  the special women in our lives, whether our birth mother, adopted mother, Godmother, a grandmother, a special aunt, neighbor, friend or ourselves.

Feel free to share something about that special woman or women in your life.

98 Thoughts to “Open Thread…………Mother’s Day……….Sunday, May 8”

  1. Elena

There is a fabulous documentary produced by Christy Turlington, “No Woman, No Cry”. It brings to light the fact that half a million women die, around the world, every year and 90% if these deaths are preventable. With proper reproductive care, most of these women would survive.

I honor my mother, my mom-in-law, my grandmothers, my sister, all the women in my life who are moms, by sharing this website and making an effort to help moms worldwide:

  2. Emma

My mom was in the hospital earlier this week and is well on the mend now, so it’s a good Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day to all.

  3. Elena

    Emma,
What a relief, this is a good Mothers day for you!

  4. I watched the Derby in honor of my mother. No one loved the Kentucky Derby more than my mother. She didn’t like the partying or drinking. She loved horses and owned one named Goldie (a gelding) for about 30 years of her life.

I have no idea how old that old horse was but he lived the life of Riley. Fortunately, he dropped dead in the pasture while my mother was out of town and the neighbors had a front end loader come dig a hold big enough to bury him. Mother was spared coming out and finding him. Goldie was NOT a thoroughbred. He was a quarter horse and a golden palamino.

    @Elena
I saw Christy Turlington on CBS “Sunday Morning” today. What an impressive woman; her husband too. It made me think about all mothers around he world who must cope with
the most primitive situations without any help.

Do you know when and where the documentary will be shown?

  7. Elena

@punchak I don’t know any info, I saw this interview with her last night, or shall I say, early this morning. If you go to the website, I’ll bet they have info there.

  8. Elena

ask my kids that question, and I’ll bet they would say Mom, hands down. Daddy’s may be more fun, but moms remember to feed you.@e

    Happy Mothers Day all around.

    Emma, good news for sure.

Its pretty out.. Enjoy the day!!

  10. Censored bybvbl

    Emma, that’s good news.

My 86 year old mother has survived three different types cancers in the last decade. A lot of her recovery might have to do with her attitude. Yesterday she accompanied my husband and I on a five mile hike before having to accept a ride back in a golf cart at the four mile mark. That’s quite an accomplishment since the longest walk she’s taken recently that I can remember is about a mile.

    Happy Mother’s Day!

  12. Emma

@Censored bybvbl That is awesome, Censored! My 87-year-old MIL is forever young like that–spent the day with her and expect many more Mother’s Days to come with her, thanks to her amazing attitude.

@elena is dewey still on the lookout, cause i’ll be there tonight

  14. @e

Dewey has sounded the bread and water alert from on high. hhmmmmm bread. hmmmmm well water. Although Elena’s bread is probably better than your average loaf. 😈

  15. Dewey the Cat

Hark! Hark! e is on his way! MEEEEE-ooooowwwwwwWWWWWWWWWW

  16. Elena

I have spoken with Dewey e, and having eloquently pleaded your case for clemency, I have decreed you shall have a wonderful visit 😉

  17. Dewey the Cat

It isn’t up to Elena to decide what kind of visit e shall have. It is up to me and I am sharpening those roof-climbing claws. Better wear thick socks, e. Moon and Elena are both cat whisperers and …well…you have not been a good boy.

It was less than 20 years ago when VP Dan Quayle berated the fictional television character Murphy Brown for “the glorification of life as an unwed mother.” Today, Bio Channel announced that “the most famous single mother in America,” as they called her, will soon have her own reality show. Bristol Palin and her son are moving in with Chris and Kyle Massey (Kyle was the guy that came in 2nd on DWTS and Chris is his older brother) and the Bio Channel (part of A&E Network) has signed on for 10 episodes.

Obama to push immigration overhaul in Texas

By Jim Forsyth Jim Forsyth – Mon May 9, 8:53 pm ET
SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) – President Barack Obama is to deliver a speech on comprehensive immigration reform on Tuesday in Texas, where he faces opposition from Republicans and skepticism from Hispanics disappointed with his failure to deliver on the issue thus far.

Obama supports a comprehensive overhaul of immigration laws, including tightened enforcement on the Mexico border, and establishing a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants who pay a fine, learn English and go to the back of the line.

“What we are going to hear tomorrow is that the new strategy the administration has pursued along the border … has made the border region of the United States much safer than it was a few years ago,” said Simon Rosenberg, founder and director of NDN, a Democratic advocacy group.

    This is good.

  26. @marinm
Now, if we can just get San Francisco and LA to secede from the unio, um,….California. Because California outside SF, LA, and Sacramento, is pretty conservative.

  27. @Starryflights
About that speech….well, what he said.

    http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/05/10/obamas-pathetic-el-paso-speech/

Obama knows that his version of “comprehensive” reform is dead in the water. He’s pandering for the illegal vote, um, sorry, the Latino democrat vote. Remember, requiring an ID to vote is discrimination!!!!

  28. From a link in the above link:

    http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/05/10/who-are-you-gonna-believe-president-obama-or-your-lying-eyes/

    Excerpts:

President Obama is not visiting Texas to speak on immigration issues. The trip to Texas was scheduled months ago, as an Austin fundraiser. The El Paso part of the trip was added a week ago to give the trip the veneer of “official” business, so the taxpayers, rather than Obama’s campaign, can pick up at least some of the tab.

But as to the “policy” part of his visit, he will apparently tell his audience in El Paso that the border is as secure as it has ever been.

In other words, when President Obama speaks in El Paso, he will be lying. For Texans, he will be lying to our faces, about an issue we deal with every day, on our dime.

  29. Ah, hate is a powerful emotion. Of course he went to El Paso to discuss immigration. I heard him.

What kind of immigration reform would YOU like to see? I thought he pretty much had the nuts and bolts of the problem.

Other people would offer praise in this day and age to someone who combined trips to save time and fuel. Not conservatives who hate Obama. He is being a wastral and soaking the tax payers.

  30. Combined trips…on my dime? Let him pay for his own trip to El Paso for a fund raiser.

Obama mocks Republican position on immigration

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE and ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Darlene Superville And Erica Werner, Associated Press – Tue May 10, 9:34 pm ET

EL PASO, Texas – In search of Hispanic votes and a long-shot immigration overhaul, President Barack Obama on Tuesday stood at the U.S.-Mexico border for the first time since winning the White House and declared it more secure than ever. He mocked Republican lawmakers for blocking immigration over border security alone, saying they won’t be happy until they get a moat with alligators along the border.

“They’ll never be satisfied,” he said.

Stymied by both chambers of Congress, the president ditched lawmakers in favor of voters who might pressure them, making an appeal to the public on a hot and dusty day far outside Washington. He told a friendly El Paso crowd that it’s up to them to tell Congress to pass legislation providing a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants.

The approach also allowed the president to make clear that it’s Republicans — not him — standing in the way of immigration legislation. As his re-election campaign approaches it’s a message he wants broadcast loud and clear to Latino voters who don’t like his administration’s heavy deportations and feel he never made good on his promise to prioritize immigration legislation during his first year in office.

“I am asking you to add your voices to this,” Obama said. “We need Washington to know that there is a movement for reform gathering strength from coast to coast. That’s how we’ll get this done.”

Countering Republican calls to focus on border security before moving to a comprehensive overhaul, Obama boasted of increasing Border Patrol agents, nearing completion of a border fence and screening more cargo, among other steps.

“We have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very Republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement,” Obama said. “But even though we’ve answered these concerns, I gotta say I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goal posts on us one more time.”

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110511/ap_on_bi_ge/us_obama_immigration;_ylt=AghYRunS0tiEChS0Vz09dkus0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTNrM3N2aDFqBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTEwNTExL3VzX29iYW1hX2ltbWlncmF0aW9uBGNjb2RlA21vc3Rwb3B1bGFyBGNwb3MDMgRwb3MDOARwdANob21lX2Nva2UEc2VjA3luX3RvcF9zdG9yeQRzbGsDb2JhbWFtb2Nrc3Jl

President Obama has done more to secure the border than any Republican president ever did. Now it’s time to offer a path to citizenship for those already here.

AP-Gfk poll: Obama approval hits 60 percent

By LIZ SIDOTI and JENNIFER AGIESTA, Associated Press Liz Sidoti And Jennifer Agiesta, Associated Press – 2 hrs 45 mins ago
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama’s approval rating has hit its highest point in two years — 60 percent — and more than half of Americans now say he deserves to be re-elected, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll taken after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

In worrisome signs for Republicans, the president’s standing improved not just on foreign policy but also on the economy, and independent Americans — a key voting bloc in the November 2012 presidential election — caused the overall uptick in support by sliding back to Obama after fleeing for much of the past two years.

Comfortable majorities of the public now call Obama a strong leader who will keep America safe. Nearly three-fourths — 73 percent — also now say they are confident that Obama can effectively handle terrorist threats. And he improved his standing on Afghanistan, Iraq and the United States’ relationships with other countries.

Despite a sluggish recovery from the Great Recession, 52 percent of Americans now approve of Obama’s stewardship of the economy, giving him his best rating on that issue since the early days of his presidency; 52 percent also now like how he’s handling the nation’s stubbornly high 9 percent unemployment.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110511/ap_on_re_us/us_ap_poll_obama_boost;_ylt=Ahvjb20LOMSCEeD7ccEz4k.s0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTNtMTFwbm01BGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTEwNTExL3VzX2FwX3BvbGxfb2JhbWFfYm9vc3QEY2NvZGUDbW9zdHBvcHVsYXIEY3BvcwMyBHBvcwM4BHB0A2hvbWVfY29rZQRzZWMDeW5fdG9wX3N0b3J5BHNsawNhcC1nZmtwb2xsb2I-

Well, well, well – how about that?

  33. And Boenher hold the debt ceiling vote ransome. Not so good. That will backfire with voters. It looks like someone might have overplayed his hand.

  34. Pat.Herve

just like the budget – they will talk and talk and talk, and they try and get our sympathy because they are pulling all nighters on the very last day that they need to pass the debt ceiling. Congress has gotten themselves so partisan that they are dysfunctional, again.

  35. I blame the American public. They refuse to be serious about this. Every time that a Congress critter tries to get serious about cuts, the media drums up panic, the politicians, usuallyDemocrats. say that old people are going to die, and that the country will default. Of course, those same Democrats voted against raising said debt limit when Republicans held power.
And the American public just keeps electing the same idiots over and over again. And I keep hearing, “Oh cut spending! But keep (their favorite) intact! Its necessary for life, liberty, and free ice cream!”

Here’s proof from that poll that most Americans have lost critical thinking abilities and don’t pay attention to politics.

65 percent call him a “strong leader,” up from 57 percent. (Really? When has he EVER led? He let Congress do the heavy lifting on the budget, on HCR, etc. He provided little guidance. He had to be convinced to go get Bin Laden. He dithers.)

Sixty-three percent say Obama cares about people like them; 63 percent also say that he understands the problems of ordinary Americans. (That’s why he’s trying to restrict our energy industries, kill our jobs, and thinks that anyone outside of his political circle are “bitter clingers to their guns and bibles” and that America needs to be “fundamentally transformed.”)

Nearly two-thirds of people — 61 percent — disapprove of his handling on gas prices, even though there’s little a president can do about them. (Amazing! The last President was blamed by the press for every little spike in gas prices, like Bush was the one in charge of the oil….you mean that the President of the US can’t influence gas prices by removing his moratoriums on exploration, his directives to the EPA to restrict energy development, can’t use his bully pulpit to lower gas taxes, can’t stop himself from attacking Libya, and most importantly, can’t stop the Fed from inflating our money supply thereby causing the price of oil to inflate? Really? Stop printing money to pay for the spending and the price of oil will drop.)

I would love to see the actual survey and who they called.

Other polls have that bounce much lower. I wonder what his polling numbers would be if the press actually did their job and reported the news equitably. If they are so objective, then their reporting on Bush was neutral. Lets see them report on the same exact topics, but now, Obama is in charge and doing worse……

Where’s those stories about war casualties? Where’s the stories about too many vacations? Where’s the complaints that the President isn’t doing enough to bring down gas prices? Where’s the stories about the President’s cozy relationships with certain industries? Why haven’t the media reported anything about the numerous scandals coming out of Obama’s Justice department? Or the conflict of interest on the National Labor Relations Board? Or his continuing close associations with groups that support communism? Why didn’t the press investigate the foreign money entering Obama’s election funding and are they going to ignore it this time, too?

Polls just regurgitate what the press puts out. Just think how bad Obama really is doing if his polls are this low and he’s had the press backing him this entire time. He’s a disaster.

Anyway, let’s see how he’s doing when the summer shows up and unemployment is still at 9% and gas hits record highs.

  36. @Cargo

maybe the media just doesn’t have your resources, Cargo. More importantly, why do you think you are right and 2/3rds of America is wrong?

Why is it your own little group intensely dislikes the president when most of America doesn’t?

I think most people see both things they like and things they would do differently.

And does he really take more vacations than Bush or Clinton or Bush 1 or Reagan?

    I don’t think so.

  37. Dan Cooper

Don’t look now but Obama Admin is now pushing…. sub-prime home loans?!?!? Oy vey, here we go again, will liberals ever learn? Apparently not… 🙁

    http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/11_20/b4228031594062.htm

  38. Dan Cooper

Did anyone hear of the controversy of Common reading poetry at the White House? Yep, thought you did, however here is a different angle, did you know that not only Common but Jill Scott (another poet invited) oppose interracial relationships? Can ANYONE tell me how that is not racist? If a white man/woman said that their race SHOULD NOT date outside of their own race what would you think? Racist? Thought so…

One excerpt from the article: http://nhjournal.com/2011/05/09/acolyte-of-rev-wright-to-complicate-obama-poetry-night/

Common has also been a vocal opponent of mixed race relationships and believes black men and white women should not date. In one rap he says, “I don’t know what it is / but white girls gettin’ ass / I know what it is / It’s cash.”

Apparently Jill is openly racist, she “winces” at the very thought of an “accomplished brother” with a “white woman”:

    http://www.essence.com/relationships/commentary_3/commentary_jill_scott_talks_interracial.php#ixzz1M4SZGduy

Is there ever going to be a time when being a racist applies to people who aren’t “white”? And when these racists are honored by the White House, is MSM, or anyone on this blog for that matter, ever going to have an issue with it or even dare to bring it up?

  39. @Moon-howler
He may not, but where’s the bad press for these constant golf outings and vacations? 60 Golf outings? He golfs more than Reagan took naps. Personally, I wish he’d take a nice long vacation.

And 2/3’s of America can be wrong. Look who got elected President. And look at all of the incumbents that keep getting elected.

Other polls show Obama running at about 50%, give or take 3 points. And those polls, like others, are a snap shot of that instant.

Most Americans pay no attention to politics. While on vacation, I decided that I would pay no more attention to politics or the news than anyone else. Turned on the local news and that’s it. If CNN, etc was on, watched it if nothing better was on. Read the local paper. Didn’t listen to talk radio.

Guess what…if that’s the way most Americans are getting their news, 2/3’s of America has NO clue what the hell their government is doing. And the media? They’ve already chosen whose side their on. Most of the national media is a support arm of the Democratic party.

  40. “Why is it your own little group intensely dislikes the president when most of America doesn’t?”

Well, I’d say that my little group is probably a good 40% of America.
I dislike him because he is attempting to fundamentally transform America into a more centralized, top down, country. He lies to our faces in speeches. He associates with those that are corrupt, violent, and/or bigoted. He is a progressive of the old school and that system is not compatible with freedom. His politics are corrupt. He would rather win his agenda than help the US economy or he’s incompetent. He does not present America in the best light to foreign countries. He is either willfully destroying our economy or is incredibly inept and cannot choose good advisors. His foreign policy alienates allies and emboldens our enemies. He is an empty suit that refuses to lead. He pretends to be above the fray while energizing his allies to do the dirty work of demonizing the business target of the day.

    What’s not to like?

I can’t think of one thing that HE thought of that has helped America. And I’ve tried.

  41. Dan Cooper

    @Cargosquid

    Wow! Spot on, nuff said.

  42. Hit submit too soon.

What we can’t understand is how anybody else can miss it. Conservatives described what would happen if he got elected and it happened. Conservatives warned liberals that what type of politician he was and now THEY’RE unhappy with him.

Take his words and his tone at face value. He ridicules an American that does not match his values. He shows no respect for Americans as a whole. He is hyper partisan but hides behind others. Why does everyone ignore what he says? It’s not as if he’s hidden…wait…yes he has….

  43. Dan Cooper

Climate change is REAL! This is the latest attempt to prove it anyway, please don’t laugh, this is honestly the most convincing argument from that group yet. Just the plain old hard core facts that prove that climate change is real:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQeeKytdhUc

    1. Tell the penguins. They are the ones who are going extinct.

How can you all sit there and so smugly say something is bogus? Do you also believe the earth is only 5,000 years old? 6000?

How can we be so arrogant as to think that all the petroleum used today isn’t impacting the earth in some way? Statistical reasoning indicates it would be more inconsistent with science to not have an impact.

  44. @Dan Cooper

I love climate change! It’s Real! I mean, hey! its much warmer now than it was one month ago! I love summer.
