Well, we are all still here, I think. Anyone missing? Anyone poofed up in the sky?
No triple crown winner again this year. Animal Kingdom was beated by 3/4ths length by a horse named Shackleford a fine looking chestnut stallion.
And then there was Joplin, Missouri. Wolverine broke the story here. Mrs. W. has relatives and the Wolverine family got a frightening phone call Sunday night. An entire city was wiped off the face of the earth. Over 100 killed and 1500 missing.
Another volcano eruption in Iceland.
@punchak
ITS A SIGN! WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!!!
no,…really….think about it……
Think about what, Cargo? You are still seeing stars from the camp out in the backyard.
Did everyone cook on a tin can top? I always thought that was great fun. And nothing tastes better than a hot dog done like that.
@Cargosquid We’re all going to die? Now that’s a revelation.
@Cargo, funny.
@all, we were saved at the last moment by none other than Randy “Macho Man” Savage!

I will be coming back from our compound here in Ohio shortly. The sheer number of gun free zones (why is an elderly community “weapons free”??) and pro-union posters makes me want to gag. I miss Virginia.
Why are you in Ohio, Marin? Were you abducted?
Interesting article about the Preakness in today’s WashPost.
Moon – were you there with the (mad)hatters? 🙂
Absolutely not. My parents in law lived a couple miles from Pimlico track and all the times I was up there, we never went to the races. I don’t care much for crowds.
I probably would have been on the side with the cut off jeans and the beer keg.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/two-worlds-side-by-side-at-the-preakness/2011/05/21/AF5Pmg8G_story.html
MH, my wife’s grandmother isn’t doing too well and we wanted her to see the prego belly just in case anything happened to her. All her extended family is here so I escorted her and my mother in law so they could visit family.
Tonight was interesting. Dinner with her uncle the union boss and her cousin (daughter from that same uncle) who works for a charter school as a special ed teacher. Watching them argue about unions was amusing. She seems to be a fan of charters even though she admits that with her masters in special ed that she clears about 35k/year and has to live with her mom.
Interesting trip but being back in Virginia today is something I look forward to.

Wasn’t it President Obama that said something about driving a car into a ditch……
👿
No, no, no. It was Teddy who said something about driving a car into a ditch, or was that a boat into a ditch, no that was a boat onto a beach and car into a creek.

@Big Dog, I am surprised it is that few.
Those pictures of Joplin, MIssouri are just horrible. I have never seen anything like that. As far as the eye can see. Next time I see a tornado warning on TV I am going to get my tail down to the lower part of the house for sure!! Holy cow.

A petition should be created to tie the salaries of Congress to the budget, kinda like a merit based pay – if they can create a budget that is feasible, they get paid, if not they do not. Would this impact the mostly millionaire Congress? Would they balance the budget then, if they had skin in the game?

Abortions are tracking the right way – down – except for one segment of society –
poor minority women. Based on this data, it seems we need a group
to reach out to these women with professional medical advice on health,
contraceptives and family planning. Now who wouldn’t support that?

Thanks Big Dog. The abortion rate amongst the poor will get even higher if Planned Parenthood services aren’t available. I am still trying to figure out why those adamantly opposed to abortion also want to do away with Planned Parenthood. Total cognitive dissonance.
Thought I would point out the obvious. I am also going to go into the guts of wordpress and set it so our 2 comments are together.
Pinko, I don’t know that it is fair to call Mr. Stirrup a bigot.
That statement suggests that you know his motivation for behavior.
I would prefer to keep some of his political beliefs local rather than have them go state-wide.
IT’S NOT OVER! WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIIIIIIEEEEEE!
From Huffington Post
Harold Camping revised his apocalyptic prophecy Monday, saying he was off by five months because the Earth actually will be obliterated on Oct. 21.
Camping, who made a special appearance before the press at the Oakland headquarters of the media empire Monday evening, apologized for not having the dates “worked out as accurately as I could have.” Through chatting with a friend over what he acknowledged was a very difficult weekend, the light dawned on him that instead of the biblical Rapture in which the faithful would be swept up to the heavens, May 21 had instead been a “spiritual” Judgment Day, which places the entire world under Christ’s judgment, he said.
The globe will be completely destroyed in five months, he said, when the apocalypse comes. But because God’s judgment and salvation were completed on Saturday, there’s no point in continuing to warn people about it, so his network will now just play Christian music and programs until the final end on Oct. 21.
“We’ve always said May 21 was the day, but we didn’t understand altogether the spiritual meaning,” he said. “The fact is there is only one kind of people who will ascend into heaven … if God has saved them they’re going to be caught up.”
Netanyaho is addressing the joint session of Congress. He was just interrupted by a protestor. The moment was not lost. He made chicken salad and lemonade out of the moment by praising democracy. He had been in the middle of discussing Arab Spring.

Grrr- one more time.
@pinko
The bottom line is, that is your opinion and you have a blog where you can express yourself.
It should come as no surprise that I don’t want our local officials called names like nazi, bigot, etc. It is unproductive and accomplishes nothing.
Pinko, you are an author and have an excellent use of written English. Feel free to describe behavior but please don’t pin labels on people.
If you do that, people will understand why you are displeased and I won’t have to defend this blog 2 years from now from charges that Elena and I allowed name calling.
Certainly his association with these organizations is troublesome, I called him on it during a citizen time. Having said that, I don’t believe I would call him a bigot directly. The most productive way to point out those problems is to specifically address those issues and actions John has taken that directly affected the community.
@ Elena & Moon,
I couldn’t agree more. Pinning a label such as that thrown out there by pinko, speaks to motivation and intent, and not to the actions to which pinko objects. Pinko’s argument is further weakened when the attempt to use “guilt by association” as a defense of the comments.
@pinko,
While you may disagree, HSM’s organizational objectives were never motivated by race. While I can’t speak to individual motivations of the entire membership, I can say without equivocation that the goals of the organization were for the enforcement of US immigration law, and to ensure that only those who have a legal right to be present in this community, can access the benefits there unto pertaining. Futhermore, HSM was formed to oppose the efforts of an organization (MWB, WWP) that was marxist in political orientation, and organized along exclusionary racial lines. This was who we referred to as “the opposition”. Many who came to the debate in its later stages, were unaware of this dynamic. This was a political fight, not a racial one.
I am married to an American of Hispanic decent. That makes my daughter of hispanic decent. If the organization were racist, I would have had no part of it.
@Moon-howler
“Feel free to describe behavior but please don’t pin labels on people.”
Stirrup behaves like a bigot and wields his political power as such. Does that make you all feel better?
Steve Thomas, when one of your HSM leaders claims someone who supports Hispanic people is a “traitor to their race,” you cannot prove to me that HSM is not a racist organization (reference post by Advocator on BVBL, a reference which was later removed). There may be people in HSM who are not racist, but the end result is, when you have racist leaders using policy written by racists, then you have a racist organization. If you don’t want to be affiliated with racism, then I suggest you quit HSM.
Here’s a clue: I am not here to make anyone feel better or give out warm fuzzies. If calling something what it is by definition and by evidence makes people THAT uncomfortable, then it’s time to look at the integrity of this blog. I don’t play politics.
While you’re at it, you might want to look at the comments on this thread where “Advocator” (Robert Duecaster, your esteemed HSM leader) calls the blog owner a race traitor and is doing so while working at the Department of Defense.
http://bearingdrift.com/2011/02/15/manassas-burning-everyone-hispanic/
@pinko
I am familiar with that discussion on Bearing Drift. If it had taken place here, I would say the same thing about the name calling.
Feel free to question the integrity of this blog. I feel in the long run, it will suffer less damage if we discourage name calling. You can not like organizations or people’s behavior without getting into hanging labels.
Its one thing to call some national politician a jerk, quite another to call someone local a name. Those are the people we bump into in the grocery store. Name calling builds walls. It rarely solves problems.
I have made no secret of my distain for the use of the word NAZI, BIGOT, RACIST in casual conversation. It becomes the little boy crying wolf. When we really run into nazis, bigots and racists, no one will listen.
I want to hold this blog to a higher standard, especially during the election season.
Pinko,
So many bridges have been built since those days, many unseen bridges. I don’t see us going back to those days. Greg’s blog is nothing like it was and I don’t see it returning to that level of power.
That John Stirrup has never taken ownership of the disaster that was the resolution, will not be forgotten. However, having said that, I believe that this county has grown and many people have left those hateful days in the past. I am not suggesting we forget those scary days, but I am suggesting that you build bridges to ensure we don’t have a repeat of those days.

Wow, I actually agree with Moon and Elena 100% Pinko. Look at it like this…
By using YOUR same logic one could call Barack Obama an anti-semitic, homophobic, bigot… and that’s just because of the church he went to for 20 YEARS.
Do you think Obama is an anti-semitic, homophobic, bigot? Didn’t think so… why not? I’m all ears…
Yes, I do think he is a bit homophobic because he doesn’t approve of gays getting married… but besides that.
