Ed talked smack about Laura Ingraham. Lost in all this is the hypocrisy of bitching about President Obama having a beer while in Ireland. So what. He was criticizing Ingraham for applauding Reagan for drinking beer in Europe and now Obama bashing for the same thing. Unfortunately, Ed went overboard and used called her ‘a right wing slut.’ That’s too bad. He made a good point up until that point.
Michelle Malkin, in her usual vituperative manner, called Schultz a cretin. I guess she didn’t watch Glee the other night. Would Ed have been in trouble for calling Ingraham ‘a right wing cretin?’ Regardless, gentlemen aren’t supposed to call women sluts. Everyone needs to sit up and take notice.
Schultz will be back. His suspension is supposedly for a week. He is a good fix after an hour or so of Steve Doocy. I already miss him. He ate his crow, pound of ….well…never mind….and he ate it well.
The difference in Fox and MSNBC is that MSNBC actually disciplines its employees for bad behavior. Fox does not, or so it seems.
Thanks for making me look up “cretin”!
Michelle Malkin, the Vicious Vixen, is just that.
Schultz shouldn’t have used the term “slut”. It is a sexual pejorative. The two words he used as a descriptor, really don’t apply when used together. Sure, Laura Ingraham approaches the debate from the right-wing of the political spectrum. But is she a sexually immoral woman, as the term used was meant to imply? Really unprofessional.
The network did the correct thing in suspending him, and making him appologize. Should his career be destroyed? No. Ingraham is a conservative warrior, and has a thick skin.
What amazes me is that the debate has devolved to this point. We have commentators attacking commontators. Those who are paid to provide opinion and analysis regarding the news, have themselves become the news.

I don’t disagree. Actually women shouldn’t call other women sluts either. It is done all the time, especially with younger women. The word is becoming more common place on TV in the 9-11 time bracket.
I also heard Geraldo saying it and I don’t recall what time it was. He was using as a verb form regarding the woman on trial now for murdering her daughter. He was pretty accurate but…I have to ask where we draw the line. I also don’t want Geraldo suspended for saying that the woman probably didn’t want the child interferring with her slutting around. And while I totally agree with him, I also will throw out that probably is language best not used in the public forum.
It just hit me…I would have much less problem with Faux News if they just changed their name to Fox Magazine.
Geraldo said what most of us were thinking about this woman. Casey Anthony. Yes, her kid probably did get in the way of her going out and slutting around. However, Fox employees and MSNBC employees hire journalists. They have a better command of the English language than that.
Coming back for a third comment….or question. It seems that the term ‘slut’ which also means ‘slovenly woman’ has been used more and more frequently just to be a perjorative term, really devoid of sexuality.
I have heard people’s dogs been referred to as ‘food sluts’ even.
Still not a good thing to call people…I am just contemplating the evolution of the world.
Moon,
Walk up to any woman and call her a “slut”. I’ll bet she’s not going to think you are referring to her manner of dress. Just like when Ann Coulter referred to John Edwards as a “faggot”, I am sure she wasn’t comparing him to a “bundle of sticks or twigs”, as was what the term once meant. She meant to imply the pejorative for a gay man.
I agree, not a good term to use, and by all accounts, inaccurate. Same applies to the Coulter comment. John Edwards may be many things, but a gay man he is not.
Steve, nothing to argue with there. Its probably the only thing Edwards is innocent of, these days.
I’d probably not like being called a slut. Sigh.
I can’t believe people actually watch this crap. I find it amazing that these guys get any recognition. My feeling is that if you watch them, you are supporting them, perhaps tacitly, but you are supporting them. Same thing with Limpbog and Becker, Hannity and the rest of those loud mouth slime bags.
Mr. Ed beat his wife, why would this surprise anyone?
This isn’t new, commentators on the left have been doing this for a while now to conservative women with little to no repercussions. Shoot, some times they are even cheered on as they do it.
Look at Bill Maher for example… in this one he calls Sarah Palin a “dumb twat” and just listen to the audience reaction of cheers, laughter, clapping and then almost a standing ovation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGE3G5kfzps
A little while after that he called her a “cunt”. Did HBO ever suspend him? Nope, which is why I give MSLSD some credit here. If they want to save that sinking ship the need to get rid of trash like Shultz, just like they did Olbermann.
The guy apologized. He was wrong. Do you want him taken out and shot?
I guess it depends on what one’s threshold is. I get probably as upset hearing any president being called a traitor, communist, stupid, etc and all the other things dished out in a day on the Faux News and other conservative stations as someone else does over Laura Ingraham being called a slut. Honestly, I don’t see the difference. What I am trying to figure out is why one disrespectful remark goes into the outer stratosphere and the others are completely ignored. Disrespect is disrespect. Its wrong.
And speaking of conservative women…has anyone heard how Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck etc. talk about non-conservative women? Trust me, it is no better. Mrs. Clinton, Mrs. Obama, Elizabeth Warren, that professor Beck hated, etc, are all objects of daily derision. Why is Laura Ingraham sacred and these other people aren’t?
HBO is an entirely different show with different expectations. Bill Maher is Bill Maher. They know what and who he is.
no reason or excuse to Ed to reference Ingraham in that manner. Pity that one weeks suspension really relates to a one week vacation for him. Jaokim Noah was fined $50K for issuing a gay slur to a fan.
@Pat, he doesn’t get paid for the ‘vacation.’
I appreciate that Ed Shultz “manned up” and made no excuces for his horrible behavior. I find Laura Ingram difficult to watch, and I agree with very little she espouses, but calling her a slut, WOW, not good, not good at all.
Moon,
Great points, but being insulting only seems to be reprehensible one way when it comes to Faux news.
Did everyone watch Ed Shult’s apology? It was commendable.
@Moon-howler
” I get probably as upset hearing any president being called a traitor, communist, stupid, etc and all the other things dished out in a day on the Faux News and other conservative stations as someone else does over Laura Ingraham being called a slut. ”
Moon,
This isn’t new. Same thing happened to GW, except it was all news organizations other than those owned by News Corp. I guess the outrage is dependent upon whose ox is being gored. Now, vulgar language is vulgar language, regardless of who is saying it. But it seems to me that the “Left” is redefining where the bottom is. Limbaugh wouldn’t call Nancy Pelosi a “whore”. Sean Hannity wouldn’t call Rachel Madow a “Dyke” or a “C…..” Glenn Beck wouldn’t call Janine Garafalo a “slut”.
What I find puzzling is the Left want’s to paint the Right as “anti-woman”, yet commentators on the left are using the most base insults regarding women who don’t agree with them. With the recent news that it looks like Sarah Palin may be running, I am preparing myself for a barrage of the most foul language ever coming out of the likes of Bill Maher, et. al.
@Steve, I didn’t approve of it being directed at Bush and I didn’t listen to stations that did that. Turn on Faux News at any given time and there are cheap shots being taken at the current president. Limbaugh picks on kids. I have heard horrible statements from him about Hillary. Hillary was treated like trash this past go round. I was offended and probably can document it on antibvbl, before it was popular to notice how women were treated. Then Palin started playing the victim. I rolled my eyes.
The reason that the Left paints the Right as anti women is because of the votes on reproductive choices. The moderates and the left both feel women can make their own morally appropriate choices. The Right obviously does not. I suppose its all how ‘anti women’ is defined. I expect those sentiments date back to legislation dealing with feminizm and women’s rights and equality. Many, not all on the Right opposed passage of such legislation and cheered of louts like Limbaugh who used derisive terms like Femi-nazi. Limbaugh called Chelsea a dog.
I had to look up Janine Garafalo. I wasn’t sure who she was. Isn’t she on the new Criminal Minds? I have no idea about her politics.
Elena,
I do think it would have been better had the word never been uttered. However, after hearing the Shultz appology, I do believe he was sincere. Ingraham should accept it, and it should be done with.
But I do think there is an undeniable pattern developing. The attacks on conservative women are intensifying, and I predict they will only get worse as Palin and perhaps Bachmann enter the race.
@Steve
She did accept his apology and was fairly gracious.
Ahhh, the juice was worth the squeeze!
The attacks on conservative women are intensifying – is that true? Meaning, that the right has gone after Hilary Clinton so fiercely, and others. I am not trying to make excuses, as I think what is wrong with society right now, is that there is no debate or compromise – someone in a back room makes a decision, and the left and right split on it, and fight without even knowing what either side really wants, or needs.
Steve says-
“What I find puzzling is the Left want’s to paint the Right as “anti-woman”, yet commentators on the left are using the most base insults regarding women who don’t agree with them”
I am sure you must be speaking tongue-in-cheek, Steve.
Look, the left will do anything to achieve it’s goals, which has made the right adopt the same tactics. Nothing is out of bounds, really. These little wrist slaps don’t mean anything.
As far as Fox News goes, if what they broadcast keeps the pot stirred up, I am all for it. The left cannot be allowed to win this country. There is a lot of reversing to be done ,and it’s going to take awhile.
I hope they get the rhetoric up to a fever pitch for the 2012 elections; hopefully unemployment will still be high and the economy bad so we can send Obama down the road.
I don’t watch TV anymore, but when I did I knew Fox was over the top. So was MSNBC. The difference is, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
@TJ
And yet another answer from a different perspective.
Have you tried Morning Joe lately? I feel that is about as ‘fair and balanced’ as it gets. The morning symposium has a representative from each political ‘side’ as a rule. It makes for an extremely interesting listen. I don’t like being spoon fed what I am to think. That is why that show appeals to me so much. Both Joe and Mika can get a bit self righteous but it shows they are human beings.
And you brought up another good point that we all need reminding of: The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
It seems to me that, as more and more women get engaged in politics, either as politicos or as commentators, they all risk taking some nasty and unfair personal hits no matter where they may be on the political spectrum. Shame on us. Ingraham a “slut”? Palin a “twat”? Hillary as “Her Thighness”? I think some of these ladies have to sharpen their nails and make good use of them. There comes a point when the apologies, especially when they may be made under duress from embarrassed bosses, won’t really cut the mustard.
