Cindy, did you see this one as well?

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/crime-scene/post/va-considers-privatizing-sex-offender-program/2011/05/26/AGDvzxBH_blog.html

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia officials are considering privatizing a costly and rapidly expanding program that indefinitely detains sex offenders who’ve already served their prison sentences.

The Miami Herald’s story has much more details. Interesting proposal.

  2. If they have served their time, why are they being detained? Please don’t think I am soft ono sex offenders. I wouldn’t mind if some of them got the death penalty, but it seems so …UNAmerican.

  3. Did Cargo make it back to Virginia after a weekend of machine gunning?

  4. Dan Cooper

Can we now add just one more “YOU LIE!” to Obama’s forever growing list of lies? Thought that he said our involvement would only last “days not weeks” in Libya… what does today make? Day 70’something AND A BILLION DOLLARS PLUS WE DONT HAVE? When is MSNBC (or anyone) going to start calling for his impeachment, or trial for war crimes, for an unjust and illegal war? Especially one in which we are now involved in for MONTHS, not the DAYS he promised? For that matter, according to his own logic, why is O-BOMB-YA not taking action in Syria?

Where are the calls for war crimes, impeachment, etc.. from the left? Where is Code Pink and Cindy Sheehan?

  5. Dan Cooper

Only one politician is calling it how he sees it… Ron Paul, talking about Obama, “he is a warmonger”. FINALLY! Someone with balls.

    something to think about…

  7. marinm

No doubt that Mr. Obama has no problems with exerting American dominance in locales that may or may not need it but the problem lies less on Obama and more on the feet of Congress.

Congress has the authority to stop/start wars and cut/increase funding as they please.

As I said some time back we were in the middle of Pelosi’s War(s). That’s changed now. We’re in the middle of Boehner’s War(s).

MH, internment camps are still legal as well.

  8. It looks like Senator Colgan will run for the 29th district again, despite rumors to the contrary. I guess it pays not to listen to gossip.

  9. @CindyB

Since 2009, 10 prisons have closed? These numbers are so artificial. Just pick up News & Messenger. Crime isn’t going down. Are these people being sentenced? The state is going on the cheap. Who pays for that? US! We have to live with criminals.

If Virginia has so much empty prison space then rent it out to other states who have overcrowding and bring in some much needed revenue.

Oh I forgot, states shouldn’t be in the position of making money. Sure they should!!!

Wasn'[t that new prison privately built?

  10. @marin,

How can people just be held after their sentences are up? It seems to be that it would be more honest (and I use that word loosely) to turn them loose, put a tail on them, and pick them up the instant they perv…go through a trial, lock them up. Throw away the key this time after conviction.

    @Moon-howler

I hear where your coming from because I come to this with the idea that personal civil liberties > government. And, I do have a problem in the deep pit of my gut with allowing the government to have a “At Her Majesty’s Pleasure” card to play. How I square this in my mind is that the government already has the right to incarcerate someone with mental defect for as long as they pose a threat. In this case if both the government and impartial doctors deem the person a threat the government holds that person until such time that he can be cleared. So, they’re not being held for the crime they’ve already paid for or the future crime that we’re potentially preventing but for the mental incapacity they have.

At least that’s what I tell myself. That the doctors act as a final check over the government giving the imprisoned his due process rights.

  14. @Moon-howler
I survived! Just got my internet back. Everything was dead….cable, phone, and internet, when I arrived home on Monday!

IT WAS A BLAST! 😉 WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!

Cannons! .50 cal Ma Deuce! (couldn’t shoot it 🙁 ) MP-40! Squidette shot this one too! MP-5! Pistols! Glock 18! Rifles! More sub-machine guns! Burning cars! Tanks firing and crushing cars! Exploding refrigerators! Cannon balls destroying a bus! Anti-tank guns destroying cars! SWAT helicopters! Water cooled machine guns from WWI! Celebrities! (well gun blog celebrities!) Great food! Did I say Machine guns?! Millions of crazed dive bombing cicadas!

And one very angry, annoyed, pissed off, disgruntled snapping turtle. But that’s another story.

  15. Marin, that’s a tough one. Constitutionally it stinks. As a human being I think that people who are sexual predators should be kept away from society.

I would probably ditch the Constitution and lock them up forever. Screw them. Sexual predators are a disease and a scurge on society.

  16. @Cargo,

Welcome home. Everyone has been looking for you. Actually, it sounds like you went to terrorist camp. 😈

Glad you had a good time. Sorry you came home to no power etc. Did Mrs. Cargo go also?

We want to hear the snapping turtle story.

  17. Mrs. Cargo and Squidette went with me. They spent the day by the pool and at the zoo. They rode a camel at the zoo!

Terrorist camp?! The farthest thing from it. It was the purest elements of American Freedoms! Though a SWAT team members reply to a blogger question, ” Would you ever do a raid on one of these guy’s homes?” was “Nah! Airstrike….”

Mrs. Cargo was able to shoot a KRISS. That’s a new Swiss .45 cal weapon that can be configured as a submachine gun or a carbine. Its a low recoil weapon with full power ammo. Even she was able to handle it on full auto – 1200 rpm. They want it to be the new Tommy gun.

Squidette shot the semi-auto silenced version and a German WWII MP-40 on automatic, along with some pistols and a .22 rifle. She also found a cannon ball, 2 grapeshot, and a round from a civil war canister round – similar to a shotgun round for cannons, along with various spent bullets. Big grins.

As for the turtle wrestling story….I have to sort out that story in my head first…….the horror…the horror….. that sharp beak…soooo close…..

Pictures will be up at the blog soon.

  18. Wolverine

Cargo, get ahold of yourself, lad! All that firepower available, and a mere snapping turtle almost carried the day?!!! No Eagle Scouts around to bail out you tough guys with guns? No Brownies? No Campfire Girls?

  19. @Wolverine
The turtle …incident…..happened on I-81, not at the shoot. Who knew that snapping turtles had such….extendable……necks. Besides, firepower would be contraindicated when one is trying to rescue said ungrateful turtle…….

The full story will be told tomorrow. I’ll put it on the blog….. Heck with turtles! I almost lost an eye!

    Mr. Randolph,
The family and I will be there Saturday. Thanks for the hint about the excursion tickets. I’ll be sure and say hi, if I see you there. I was glad to see Holly Morris promoting this weekend yesterday from the Harris Pavillion.

  21. No one from my crew answered about the train so I guess no tickets this year.

  22. Cargo, waiting still on that snapping turtle story……

“Greatest Grandparents Contest is being discontinued due to lack of interest.”

A sad sign of the times.

  28. @Big Dog, that truly is sad. I adored my grandparents. Is this local or national?

I think it is a sign of how little regard our society has for older people in general.

Well, Cargo, while you are crafting your turtle saga, I’ll slip mine in. Picture a beautiful inland lake in Michigan. I’m in a small boat with my younger brother, my father, and my elderly grandfather. We are fishing. Suddenly we hear a lot of yelling from a nearby boat. We look up and see two guys standing in the back of a rowboat with an outboard motor. The boat is rocking back and forth dangerously. The two guys are yelling. They are also throwing cushions, fishing tackle boxes, gas cans, and and all kinds of other stuff toward the front of that boat. Upon further examination, we see that they had hooked a huge snapping turtle and dragged it into their boat. I don’t know. Turtle soup maybe? In any case, the snapping turtle immediately assumed command. You could see that vicious beak snapping like crazy as he was making his way toward the two guys. The two guys in the back were terrorized. Finally they managed to use the boat oars to ease the angry turtle out of the boat and back into the lake, although I think one of the oar blades took a major hit.

Me: “Grandpa, look at those guys over there!”

Grandpa (after a cursory glance): “Stupid idiots.”

  31. punchak

    @Moon-howler

I’m not sure I agree with you on this. A lot of grandparents are working these days, or playing tennis or golfing, and have little time for grandkids. Grandkids, for their part, are so tightly scheduled that they don’t have time for grandparents Furthermore, many grandparents live 100s or 1000s of miles away.

It’s not like olden days with a standard Sunday dinner at grandma’s.

Besides, who’s to judge who the Greatest Grandparents are? Sounds pretty silly to me.

  32. punchak

Turtle story not to be read just before going to bed.
    Nightmares likely to follow.

Thanks for a good laugh cargo!

At a noncampaign/nonpublicity seeking tour bus stop, Sarah Palin delivered a recount of the tale of the midnight ride of Paul Revere that was as compelling as it was inaccurate, just the way her worshipers like it. http://www.mediaite.com/tv/watch-cnn-anchors-deadpan-reaction-to-sarah-palins-version-of-paul-reveres-midnight-ride/

Turtle story was funny. No good deed goes unpunished.

Cargo, not sure if you’re into online games but may want to try out World of Tanks. Free online game. Pretty fun. I love manning a SPG (Self Propelled Gun or otherwise known as artillery) and raining down death on the commies or the germans. I refuse to drive any tank that’s not AMERICAN. 😉

The Weiner story keeps getting funnier. Oh, and the economy is now in the toilet. WOOHOO!!

  35. cargosquid

    @marinm
My wife just said that. “No good deed goes unpunished.”LOL.

I’ll have to try it. Yet ANOTHER thing that’s going to keep me up at night.

    Besides turtles, that is….

Been wondering where Moe Davis was. I just took a look at the plans being made for future endeavors by the board of the Crimes of War Project. No wonder we haven’t heard much from Moe lately. There are some very good articles posted there by, inter alia, Dworkin and Iliopoulos, on subjects which ought to be a read for anyone interested in such things as the war on terror, the drone program, targeted killings of terrorists in general, and on the Israeli-Hamas conflict and how all of these may or may not fit into modern conceptions of the laws of war. Whether you wind up agreeing or not with the conclusions in those articles, the legal arguments presented are well worth the effort to read and consider. It could give a good intellectual framework for watching what might happen in the future with regard to the leadership in Libya, Syria, and perhaps even Yemen, among others.

The kids decide, as they always have.

My only point is that there is less regard for older citizenry in this country compared to other countries. Japan seems to pop into my mind.

Many grandparent are raising their grandchildren. I have several friends who have a much higher regard for their grandparents than for their parents. I suppose there are no sweeping generalizations here.

  39. @Cato the Elder

Morale would improve greatly if the stupid ass cable channels would give it a rest. The doom and gloom gets analyzed to death long before the markets even open. If you tell someone how to think, most likely they will.

  40. John Edwards indicted. He stands a chance of going to prison for 5 years on campaign illegalities.

  41. @cargosquid
I thought WE were getting the exclusive. *I* wanted to publish it. Waaaahhhhhhh

  42. Speechless here. I was watching Faux News when Edwards and his oldest daughter walked out of wherever he was. Some woman in the background on the faux channel can be heard whispering ‘what a big ass.’ I think they were speaking of Miss Edwards. Perhaps they were speaking of John in general.

    OOOOPPPPPS.

  43. Cato the Elder

    @Moon-howler

LOL. You mean cable news shows parade bears who are short to the orbit of Mars to talk about how bad things are and how much worse they will get in the hopes of manipulating the market in one direction or another?

    1. I doubt that professional investors pay much attention, Cato but I think the personal investors very much feel the doldrums when doom and gloom starts.

I just saw a report about an elementary school principal in Dubuque County, Iowa, who has been arrested for having child porn on his computer. He also admitted, apparently, to placing a hidden camera in the boys’ bathroom and taking pictures of the kids.

What in Hell has gone wrong with this country?!!!!

We could try getting rid of this 99-week unemployment idea to force people to work for their wages and meals.
