Feds cut spending…at Virginia’s expense

Sometimes efforts to cut spending have a price tag we don’t like.  Virginia was recently denied FEMA relief by the Obama administration.  Ouch!  Here’s what went down.  Governor McDonnell declared Virginia a disaster area so several countries ripped apart by tornadoes in April.  Virginia saw more than 30 tornadoes last month.

According to the Richmond Times Dispatch:

The Obama administration has rejected Virginia’s request for federal disaster aid for rural counties hit last month by tornadoes that killed 10 and destroyed or damaged more than 1,000 homes. The state might appeal the decision.

In a letter Friday to Gov. Bob McDonnell, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said that it was turning down Virginia because it concluded that the state could handle the cleanup on its own.

The head of Pakistan’s army is big-assing

The head of Pakistan’s army, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is Big-Assing.  He has had enough of the Americans and will take any further ‘misadventures’ such as the killing of Bin Laden as a violation of Pakistani sovereignty and it would lead to a reconsideration of the relationship with the United States.

According to the New York Times:

The statement by the army’s press office said, “Any similar action violating the sovereignty of Pakistan will warrant a review on the level of military/intelligence cooperation with the United States.”

General Kayani had decided that the number of American troops in Pakistan was to be reduced “to the minimum essential,” the statement said.

He did not specify the exact number of American troops asked to leave Pakistan, and it was not clear that the level was below what Pakistan had previously demanded after a C.I.A. contractor shot and killed two Pakistanis in January.

Could it be that the general is embarrassed because his army didn’t know the raid was coming off?  Could it also be a mass murderer was hiding right under the noses of the military in a garrison city caused some embarrassment?

Has the general ever thought that his big-assing might be costing his country billions with a B?  Screw him.   Pakistan has much to explain to the United States.  Hopefully they will stop rattling their sabers.  It makes them look stupid.

Kentucky Derby this weekend

@   @     @  @   –@   @   @   @   –@   @   @   @    @   @   @

Choose your hat and your horse.  It’s the Kentucky Derby!  Horse racing fans are headed to Louisville to participate in the annual opening volley for the Triple Crown.  We have not had a triple crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

The 70’s brought 3 Triple Crown winners.  Secretariat in 1973, and Seattle Slew in 1977.  Before Secretariat, the previous thoroughbred to win the Triple Crown was Citation in 1948.  There were 4 Triple Crown winners in the 40’s.  Then nothing for 2 decades. We  have not had a Triple Crown winner for 33 years.

The field is full this year.  To see the contestants, or horse athletes as they are sometimes called, go to the Kentucky Derby website.  This year is the 137th Kentucky Derby.  The Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown.  The Preakness Stakes and the Belmont will wrap up the series to declare a Triple Crown winner.

I have chosen my horse–Pants on Fire.  Pants on Fire (#7) will be ridden by  Anna Napravnik.  Favorite jockey Calvin Borel will ride Twice the Appeal, (#9).  I may switch by tomorrow, or put money on 2 horses.

The race begins around 6 pm tomorrow.  It has been described the most exciting 2 minutes in sports.  The winner will stand  under a blanket of red roses, one of the official symbols of the Kentucky Derby.  Dan Fogelbery recorded the now famous song, Run for the Roses.

David Barton: Revisionist self-made historian

With the upcoming presidential election in 2012, much focus is on a little known self-made historian with a degree in education from Oral Roberts University:  David Barton.  Most of us had never heard of this man.  So who is this David Barton?

According to the New York Times:

ALEDO, Tex. — In an unmarked office building in this ranching town, among thousands of Revolution-era documents and two muskets with bayonets, David Barton might seem like a quirky history buff. But the true ambition of this slender man in cowboy boots is to use America’s past to remake its future, and he has the ear of several would-be presidents.

Cat on a “Wet” Tin Roof !

Dewey, our adopted kitty, is one of the smartest but dumbest cats I have ever had the privilege of loving.    Opening closed doors is no obstacle for him, as long as the handle is lever style, he can open it by hanging onto it with his paws and then, leaning backwards, every so slightly, he pulls it open with the weight of his body.

However, what is so funny, is that if we forget to the lock the door, Dewey, having let all the OTHER animals out, won’t go more than a foot from the house, he is terrified!  So although he is smart, he is no kitty Delta SEAL.

Dewey sleeps with the kids every night, alternating between beds, he loves to stay snugly and warm.  In the morning,  after numerous attempts to end your life by being under your feet as you walk down the stairs, he waits to be fed.  This morning, I realized, no Dewey under my feet.  Hmmm, I wonder, where is Dewey.  I ask the kids, no one has seen him.  We do a room to room search, no Dewey.   I start to worry, could Dewey have somehow, ever so stealthily, snuck out when I let the dog back in last night?

To Release or Not to Release

Much has been said since the death of Bin Laden about how the aftermath was handled.  And yes, there are already conspiracy theorists popping up.  Are they the deathers–the ones who don’t believe he is really dead?

Currently the debate is whether to release the photos of  dead Osama Bin Laden.  Are the pictures too gross?  Will his followers get them and martyr him even further?  Or is it just in bad taste?  According to CNN, 56% of Americans want to see the pictures of him dead.

What do you think?

How about them Virginia Seals!!

The mayor of Virginia Beach wants to honor the Navy Seals who killed Bin Laden.  The secret military unit deploys out of a tiny military installation at Dam Neck, Virginia, right outside Virginia Beach.   The problem with the mayor’s plans is, the unit is too secretive for the mayor to know who they are or how to find them.  That’s just the way that unit works.

The Washington Post had a very interesting article about Navy SEALs:

But while such discretion is a prerequisite for covert operations, it raises practical hurdles for a mayor who is used to the cheering crowds that welcome home aircraft carriers to the naval base in Norfolk.

“This community is extremely proud. I’d like to come up with a way to have a city celebration of some kind. If we can!” said Sessoms, whose initial thought was to include the SEALs in the city’s “Patriotic Festival” in June. “But it’s challenging.”

Other Virginia politicians were able to overlook such details, satisfied with the knowledge that that men who killed bin Laden had a connection to the Old Dominion state. Former Republican Senator and current candidate George Allen tweeted: “As Virginians were hit at the Pentagon on 9-11 & USS Cole, it is appropriate that a VA-based SEAL team brought justice directly to #Osama.”

Washington Post: Running in the Red

From the Washington Post:

The nation’s unnerving descent into debt began a decade ago with a choice, not a crisis.

In January 2001, with the budget balanced and clear sailing ahead, the Congressional Budget Office forecast ever-larger annual surpluses indefinitely. The outlook was so rosy, the CBO said, that Washington would have enough money by the end of the decade to pay off everything it owed.

Voices of caution were swept aside in the rush to take advantage of the apparent bounty. Political leaders chose to cut taxes, jack up spending and, for the first time in U.S. history, wage two wars solely with borrowed funds. “In the end, the floodgates opened,” said former senator Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), who chaired the Senate Budget Committee when the first tax-cut bill hit Capitol Hill in early 2001.

Now, instead of tending a nest egg of more than $2 trillion, the federal government expects to owe more than $10 trillion to outside investors by the end of this year. The national debt is larger, as a percentage of the economy, than at any time in U.S. history except for the period shortly after World War II.
