The Dog Days of Summer

Hot enough for everyone?  Its the dog days of summer for sure and this is one of the hottest summers on record.

Thank goodness for air conditioning.  How did people survive without it?

160 Thoughts to “Open Thread………………………………………..Sunday, July 29”

Trick from living in the south. Get in the nearest pool, take a cold shower, making sure to get the coldest water possible on your head, under your arms, and in the crotch of your legs (where heat builds up). Water does wonders for pulling heat out of the body. Truth be told, I actually prefer cold water (pool or shower) and a fan to A/C anyway.

  2. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Now in the car….you’re just screwed without A/C.

    1. Yes, and mine just went out yesterday. Ask me how I am not going anywhere until the ac is fixed.

Good to see a local paper in his home district calling Eric Cantor to task.
    He deserves it.

Guess you’ve gotta go somewhere to get the a/c fixed 🙂

Unless you have an in-house mechanic, of course.

  5. Cindy B

How well I remember driving from Minnesota to Oregon in the summer, no air conditioning, single lane roads (yes, I’m that old), three of us kids in the back of the Buick, dad threatening to pull off on the side if we didn’t behave, Mom handing back sandwiches and cups of water from the Thermos. If the motel on the side of the road had an outdoor pool, we were in heaven, but mainly we stayed with relatives, sleeping on the floor in cool old dark houses. Memory is a tricky thing though — look back on all the sesquicentennial photos and you don’t see the extreme heat-dome heat, just the vivid action on a summer day.

  6. Wolverine

By gosh, Cindy B, you just gave me a flashback to my own Midwest childhood, right down to Dad threatening to pull over if we boys didn’t start behaving in the back seat. I adopted that tactic later with my own kids. I remember as a kid driving down to visit kinfolk in Alabama in the heat of the Summer, staying in what they used to call “tourist cabins.” The A/C was a hand fan, preferably large. One day, down in middle Tennessee, Dad decided to forego the usual tourist cabins and expense the funds for one of those new fangled, modern motels. It was a very nice place, with a pool in front and a fancy brick facade. Dad went to pay for the room. We kids, however, found that pool to be covered with some sort of scum. So, no pool. At least the rooms would be nice. Well, until Mom walked in the place and then came back out with a puzzled look on her face. Turned out the brick facade was just that, a brick facade. It was attached to the same old row of rustic tourist cabins.

Ah, the Good Old Days!! And then there was the time the family decided to go shopping in Pensacola, Florida. Being a Yank trying to imitate my Southern cousins, I decided not to take shoes. Who knew a darned cement sidewalk could get so hot?!! I spent the whole afternoon literally hotfooting it from one storefront awning to another. Pure agony.

If I were a Democrat Party hack, I’d be careful about trying to slime people on the grounds that they took money from Wall Street. Obama is at the very top of most of those recipient lists: http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/toprecips.php?id=d000000085&type=P&sort=A&cycle=2008

Futures market just opened, big gap up, market likes the deal.

    1. Has anyone even figured out what the deal is?

  9. Cargosquid

    AAAAAaaaaaahhhhh!

Can’t stand it anymore. I’m watching “Victorious,” a kid’s show that my daughter likes.
    I felt my IQ melting….melting….meeeellllllltttttinnnngggg……

    Actually its usually fun.

OMG, just realized what I said……

    I’m doomed……Help me…..

  10. I guess we can forget about economies being stimulated by people spending money.

How about all those defense contractors? Maybe that is where the ‘stop spending’ will start.

Lets see who goes for the heroics and refuses to pass the ‘deal.’ I have a few candidates I could make book on.

  11. Cindy B

Great memories, Wolverine. I still remember seeing tourist cabin type motels on Rt 29 and Rt 1 in the ’80s. Doubt they are there now. But I know some places where they rennovate them and make them into little artist or writer studios.

Cargo, I am with you on the choice of TV shows. I have the same problem. At least I can sneak in SpongeBob once in a while.

  13. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    @Cargosquid
Funny you mention that. I just spent a two week vacation with my boys, and in the late afternoon, we had Cartoon network on because it was the only thing available in the condo we stayed that might hold the older boys attention. I woke up from a nap to have “Adventure Time” on and some of it inadvertantly entered my ear-holes. O…M….G…. the most worthless piece of trash I ever saw or heard in my whole life. Makes “teen mom” look like Jeopardy. No wonder our kids join gangs and bring guns to school. If that garbage doesn’t drive kids to try drugs, I don’t know what else could. Thank GOD for the channel-changer!!

The Hill Poll: One in 3 voters say the
US has passed its peak
By Elise Viebeck – 08/01/11 06:00 AM ET

More than one third of likely voters believe America’s best days are over, according to a new poll for The Hill. A clear majority also feel the United States is being overtaken by other nations in important ways.

The pessimism on their part may be a reflection of the continuing effects of the Great Recession and the historically high rate of unemployment in particular. The current crisis over the debt ceiling also might be fueling negative feelings.

    In a related question,

Is anyone else exposed to the Disney shows like Victorius and ICarly, etc?

Is it just me or have they recreated the “studio system” that enable the stars of the past to become such accomplished stars? Everyone of these “stars” has a show, can sing, and can dance and if one show ends…the cast is just put into another one.

OH, and guys…..most of the stars turned 18 this year…..just sayin’……its okay to watch them now.

  18. Maybe you all need a different hobby from right wing political infusion and kids’ shows. Your wives ought to set the parent control so YOU can’t watch them.

I don’t know about you but I don’t feel very relieved at this point. I am waiting for some more pouting children to derail this who ‘agreement.’ Children could come from either side.

Let’s put it this way, I have some cash for the ‘fire sale’ set aside. I didn’t even think about it burning a hole in my pocket this morning. Things still too iffy.

The market is still tanking because of why it was tanking last week.

  24. @Slow, did you get the ac fixed?

Creditor nations can sometimes lose their status and become debtor nations. This happened to the United States in 1988 when its balance of payments turned negative. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/creditor_nation.asp

    Thanks Reagan

  26. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Moon-howler :
@Slow, did you get the ac fixed?

Yep…2lbs light on refrigerant, and the coils iced up like magic. sounds about right for five year old builder-grade AC system. I’m thinking of saving up for a Trane sometime down the road.
    Fire-Sale is right.

  27. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Yeah, I’m hearing whining from both sides, maybe not equally, but both sides nevertheless.

  28. Glad you got it fixed. That was fast. Did you add it or did a repair person do it? My car is in the shop now. Jury still out. At least I don’t live in my car. I am pretty sure it is a bad belt considering the ac works intermittently and there is much belt squealing.

We broke down and got a new ac and furnace. AC was not the original. This was five years ago. We got a Bryant. It is one that the furnace is gas and the ac is a heat pump. The ac took some adjustment for a couple years. Finally they replaced a compressor last year and this thing now works like nothing I have ever seen before. It also cut my naturral gas consumption in half. I think perhaps the original heat pump might have had something that wasn’t quite right…but we were still under warranty.

  29. Slow, who do you hear whining the worst, from your end?

Debt-ceiling deal risks compromising fragile economic growth

By Zachary A. Goldfarb, Tuesday, August 2, 3:49 AM

The deal between President Obama and Congress to raise the federal debt ceiling would avert a financial crisis but also threaten to aggravate the basic problems facing the U.S. economy, including a stubbornly high unemployment rate and weak demand.

The agreement could immediately lift the cloud of uncertainty over the economy. It would end a political stalemate that could have caused the United States to default on its obligations for the first time. Over the long term, the deal could help free the nation from what is fast becoming a crushing debt.

But, many economists say, the agreement could endanger the anemic economic recovery — because of both what the deal includes and what it doesn’t. The government would cut back on spending, which has softened the blow of the slowdown, while failing to renew measures, such as a payroll tax cut, that have put money in consumers’ pockets.

The debt deal represents a striking reversal from a year ago, when jobs were atop the government’s agenda and both parties were arguing over who had the best plan to increase employment. But even as the agreement threatens to tamp down growth this year and next, it doesn’t go nearly as far as financial analysts and some senior officials had hoped toward reining in the national debt later this decade.

In short, some economists warn, deficit savings are too modest in the future and too severe in the present.

The agreement would mean the government has less money to provide employment opportunities for the 9.2 percent of Americans looking for jobs. It would probably cut aid to states, whose own cuts are contributing to the weak economy, and eliminate at least $350 billion from the defense budget, prompting layoffs at government contractors.

Americans would also have less money to spend next year because the president failed to persuade Congress to extend a 2 percentage-point payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance. Obama has frequently cited those measures, put into place in December, as important in offsetting sharply higher fuel and food costs.

“Why would you want to impose restraint on an economic recovery that’s already fragile?” asked Josh Feinman, chief global economist at Deutsche Bank Advisors. “You’re removing spending power from the economy at a time when it needs it. That’s likely to make the economy weaker.”

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/debt-ceiling-deal-risks-compromising-fragile-economic-growth/2011/08/01/gIQA9phUoI_story.html

    Good questions.

I couldn’t tell. I’ve hit the saturation point with it. That’s how politics works, it’s like buying a new car….they wear you down and wear you down until you’ll do anything just to get the process over with. I had to take a break and concentrate on how ancient Asia Minor acted as a middleman of sorts between neolithic trans-Caucasus cultures and Pelasgian Greece…..how they traded in both directions and might have formed a sort of “cultural bridge” between the two.

No more 20-year rule? DOD panel calls for radical retirement overhaul

    Published: July 25, 2011

A sweeping new plan to overhaul the Pentagon’s retirement system would give some benefits to all troops and phase out the 20-year cliff vesting system that has defined military careers for generations, the Military Times newspapers reported.

The plan calls for a corporate-style benefits program that would contribute money to troops’ retirement savings account rather than the promise of a future monthly pension, according to a new proposal from an influential Pentagon advisory board.

  38. I would give it a day or two. I am not so sure things have bottomed out.

  39. So little feelings are hurt because Biden said the gang of however many who affliate themselves with the tea party mentality acted like terrorists? What else would you call actions that endanger America?

They did hold America hostage. Would gangsta have been more fitting? Many Americans are furious over what happened. I am one of those Americans. Any time I lose what I consider large sums of money I get furious. On any given day, ‘terrorist’ would be pretty mild coming out of this salty old dog’s mouth.

If the tea partiers are going to dish it out, then learn out to take it.

Does that mean Ms. Palin now gets a pass for her target map and that the call for civility in politics has finally died?

  44. from NY times news alert:

Senate Fails to End Partial Shutdown at F.A.A.

After dealing with the debt crisis, Senate negotiators tried and failed Tuesday to end a stalemate over temporary funding for the Federal Aviation Administration, leaving 4,000 F.A.A. employees out of work and relying on airport safety inspectors to continue working without pay.

The partial F.A.A. shutdown, which began July 23 and is likely to continue at least through Labor Day, has also idled tens of thousands of construction workers on airport projects around the country. Dozens of airport inspectors have been asked by the F.A.A. to work without pay and to charge their government travel expenses to their personal credit cards to keep airports operating safely.

Looks like even more people not paying taxes on money they aren’t earning. Noooooo we don’t have a revenue problem. NOT!!!!! Let’s contribute to the unemployment problem.

Well, if it wasn’t from being totally wrong, you and big dog would be right. If the market had plunged because of the debt ceiling worries and the tea party influence, why did it plunge big time when the deal was signed? Because the fundamentals of the Obama economy are, as anyone could easily guess, horrible. But why do I even bother. Just go on thinking that if Obama gets out there and demonizes American businesses enough for “sitting on their money” and not hiring people willy-nilly for no reason whatsoever, that everything will get better.
