144 Thoughts to “Open Thread………………………………………..Friday, August 5”

  1. Lafayette

    I beat Cargo. Yay!! 🙂

Don’t forget starting next Friday 8/12/11 the Prince William County Fair opens!! It’s the Commonwealth’s largest county fair. They have animals, rides, tractor pulls, demolition derby, and carnival food. What more could you ask for. To bring back the diving donkey and racing pigs.

    Moon’s F-word!!! I think I hear her teeth gnashing as I type. 👿

  2. Lafayette

Looks like the racing pigs are back at the fair this year.

Where’s Juturna? I did say DIVING DONKEY, afterall. 😉

  3. You hear it well…there will be a great gathering of the masses.

Masses of what, we just aren’t sure.

Did I hear that this is the last year for the F-word? Did I hear correctly?

  4. Lafayette

    @Moon-howler
Don’t make me cry it’s Friday! I’ve heard that rumor, but I have a horrible feeling it may come to pass. If that day comes, I will be in mourning. 🙁

  5. Cargosquid

Hey! The White House agrees with me! NOW they tell us.

Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney admitted, “The White House doesn’t create jobs.”

Who knew?…..oh, yeah….a lot of people.

  6. Tax free weekend is here on school supplies and back to school clothing.

  7. A little bird just told me that the Potomac Nationals made a $25,000 campaign contribution to Corey Stewart. Why just to him?

Was the stadium improvement issue discussed in public forum or behind closed doors?

  8. @Cargo

    Tell that to FDR.

  9. Cargosquid

    @Moon-howler
I would….his actions prolonged the Great Depression. It was only the politically connected that built wealth. “It’s a good job…if you can get it.” Remember that. You had to know someone.

My mother lived through that. She supported her family through that, starting at the age of 13. If you didn’t have the right connections, it was slim pickings in a lot of areas.

So, I agree with the White House.

  10. Need to Know

I thought this was interesting. Not all celebs are lefties.

  11. Cargosquid

n 2002, singer Britney Spears said, “Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes, and we should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens.”

That’s not right leaning. That’s just dumb. For anyone.

And Arnold Schwarzenegger may be a Republican, but, from his record shows that he’s not a conservative.

Don King? Really? 50 Cent? Who knew?

I think that Drew Carey wouldn’t consider himself “right leaning” though. He is an avowed Libertarian.

    Interesting list.

  12. marinm

I’m a fan of Mr. Adam Baldwin. http://twitter.com/#!/adamsbaldwin

C’mon. He was in Full Metal Jacket (Animal Jacket) and Firefly (Jane).

And anyone with right or libertarian leanings should watch Firefly. 🙂

  13. Need to Know

I’m not endorsing all of these people. I just thought the list was interesting.

  14. @Cargosquid

I suppose it all depended on where you live.

Ok, I will play the game. All the history books were wrong.

  15. Cargosquid

    @Moon-howler
Many of the history books are now stating that FDR’s policies extended the depression. Heck, I heard that from high school teachers. I resisted it at the time because FDR was a hero. Their statements that it took WWII to end the Depression contradicted what I was being told by other history teachers/popular literature.

So, yes. Many of the history books can be wrong. Of course, it would depend upon the interpretation of the history and the author’s political biases. Since most academics lean left, FDR is presented as a hero that could not have been wrong.

For those that followed the elementary school at Stonewall Middle site fiasco unfold. Mr. Richardson is once again running for the school board. I hope he realizes his comments, actually quotes regarding the site have my head ready to explode this morning. This little tid bit by Dan Roem, is gonna cost him dearly. I hope he enjoyed that seat while it lasted. I’ve been a Don supporter since his first bid at the seat. That has all come to a skreeching halt as of this morning. UFB!!!

Well, Don, I hope you are reading this! I take grave exception to your quotes to it being political for me and my neighbors. It was anything, but that, and you should know that. I’m an Independent, there were Democrats and Republicans out there fighting against this hair-brain idea of the school board’s. Please, explain to me how this was political. There were many supporters of yours for years that what was planned was wrong. I’m very disappointed.

    EDIT
There were many supporters of yours for years, that *KNEW* what was planned was wrong.

  18. Cargosquid

    @Lafayette
But he compared the idea of substituting parental opinions over those of professional educators as going to the doctor’s office and then ignoring the doctor’s advice.

That would depend upon the “professional educator” wouldn’t it? And at what level said professional was serving. I may disagree with what my child’s teacher is teaching in history and consider it to be so much pablum, but SHE isn’t the one enforcing the curriculum. Its the “professionals” that brought us the SOL’s and NCLB that took away the parents’ influence over LOCAL education.

  19. Mom

Moon, given the text of the quotes you may have to at least temporarily suspend your ban on anti-Don comments and I sense a real doozy welling up inside me as he is liberally engaging in revisionist history.

Mom :Moon, given the text of the quotes you may have to at least temporarily suspend your ban on anti-Don comments and I sense a real doozy welling up inside me as he is liberally engaging in revisionist history.

Thank you for saying this. I had something typed out for Moon, but was afraid my post would be banned all together. Look forward to seeing your thoughts on this one.

  22. I don’t understand why you are so upset. He gave his opinion. It disagreed with yours. Everyone has moved on. I don’t think he meant party political. He meant a neighborhood against school board type of political.

You won. Why would you care what his opinion is?

    I am baffled.

  23. Lafayette

    @Moon-howler
I am a constituent and long time supporter, that’s WHY care what his opinion. Especially, when it’s directed at my neighborhhod. Oh, and he’s supposed to represent me and the other thousands of Gainesville residents. Furhtermore, he’s the one that brought it up. I don’t hear my neighbors glouting. I don’t feel neighborhood against board is political. They acted stupidly when they thought nobody was looking and got their asses handed to them!.

I wonder how long before you’re inbox has a new message or your phone is ringing.

  24. Let me be more specific. Some people worked very hard at fact-finding, gathering of data, compilation, etc. Those people presented their material in a cogent, professional way.

However, the cowboys also came to town at a few of those meetings and didn’t conduct themselves in a professional, polite matter. Too bad those people had to latch onto those who had worked hard.

I strongly suspect that is where the political remarks came from. The worker bees weren’t political. Those who came along to stir up things, because that is just what they do, perhaps cast a air of politics around the entire issue…because that is just what they do.

    I hope this clarifies.

  25. Cargosquid

Soooo….if Ralph Nader is right…..who do you think is going to be Obama’s primary challenger?

    http://news.yahoo.com/nader-almost-100-percent-chance-democratic-primary-challenger-020811577.html

Hillary Clinton? Schumer? A democratic governor? Mark Warner?

  26. @Cargosquid

The person I know who was spearheading the use of a text some parents didn’t like is about as professional as they come. NO need to use quotes or any of the other mark ups that people use to indicate sarcasm.

Would that all teachers were as professional as Mrs. Knight.

  27. Cargosquid

    @Moon-howler
Great. I was speaking in general terms. I have no knowledge of the local controversy. His statement just jumped out at me.

I used quotes because many of those professionals are just politicians like the ones that brought us NCLB.

    1. I hate NCLB. Hate Hate Hate.

  28. @Cargosquid

Ralph Nader has been and continues to be a true AH. I thank him for the 8 years of George Bush. He truly doesn’t get it. I think he is a Republican operative in old man’s clothing.

  29. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Moon-howler :
I hate NCLB. Hate Hate Hate.

I’m with you there, but what you SHOULD hate is that the Federal Government thinks it knows how to educate children in the first place. As if people never went to school before the feds got involved. People never learned anything in school before the feds got involved. Dept. of Education…..first on the chopping block.

    1. Actually, NCLB doesn’t teach or tell what to teach. It holds the states accountable for all it says it is going to teach.

I don’t like the bully tactics. I don’t like the number crunching. I think education should not go beyond the state level in most cases. Most, not all. I would not have a problem with an agency of education. I have never thought a cabinet level department was necessary.

  30. Slowpoke Rodriguez

I’ve been meaning to ask. Remember a while back (wasn’t too long) when Corey Stewart had a “town hall” of sorts where you could dial in? I’m pretty sure there was a posting here about how evil Corey Stewart was for having a conference call, or something like that. Did anyone here actually dial in? I did for the first few minutes. I was wondering if anyone else heard the little old lady ask (first question) about illegals?

    1. I don”t remember it. jackson Miller does that periodically and so does Frank Wolf. Corey must have put me on the do not call list.

  31. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Dude…..we’ve been downgraded.

  32. marinm

We’re sailing into uncharted territory with this administration and Congress delivering us the first ever downgrade of US credit. Beans, bandages and bullets…………….

    1. @marin, you might want to take another look on who is delivering the downgrade to US credit. It might just be the party of NO.

      Thanks, tea folks. Thanks.

      From the WaPo:

Lowering the nation’s rating one-notch below AAA, the credit rating company said “political brinkmanship” in the debate over the debt had made the U.S. government’s ability to manage its finances “less stable, less effective and less predictable

  33. Slowpoke Rodriguez

I’m thinking Monday ought to be REALLLY interesting!

Oh, you just read the part that said what you wanted to hear. Did you miss the part about the deal not being strong enough?

  35. Cargosquid

    @Slowpoke Rodriguez
Unpossible. We raised the debt ceiling. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that if the debt ceiling was raised, we wouldn’t have any problems.

I agree with Bryan Preston. Geitner, at the least, should resign.
    http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/2011/08/05/now-that-sp-has-downgraded-us-credit-tim-geithner-should-resign/
    ************************
Despite Geithner’s blithe promises back in April, when S&P first warned that a downgrade might be in the offing, a downgrade has now occurred. Today’s downgrade has been decades in the making, but the US government was specifically warned about it nearly four months ago, and the Obama administration failed to act.

Under Geithner’s watch, the United States has not had a national budget at all, and that includes two years when the party of his president controlled the White House and both houses of Congress. As Treasury Secretary, it was Geithner’s job to make the case that living without a national budget was reckless. The fact is, Geithner has offered no leadership at all. He should resign.

The downgrade from S&P has been brewing for months. S&P’s sovereign debt team, lead by company veteran David T. Beers, had grown increasingly skeptical that Washington policy makers would make significant progress in reducing the deficit, given the tortured talks over raising the debt ceiling. In recent warnings, the company said Washington should strive to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years, suggesting anything less would be insufficient.

Perhaps S&P is filled with Tea Partiers……”reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years, suggesting anything less would be insufficient.” That right there says it all.

    1. I was going to suggest that the 60 plus No sayers who held American hostage should resign.

I don’t know why you thought everything was alright and no one told you that raising the debt ceiling at the last minute was going to fix all the ills.

We were the laughing stock of the world because a bunch of rubes were holding the United States hostage.

  36. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Sorry, Moon, but the Feds are unanimously blaming S&P……go figure.

    1. They can blame who they want.

  37. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Meanwhile, I’m desperately scouring the HuffPo looking for a picture for Nicki Minaj’s Nip Slip on Good Morning America this morning. Dammit, HuffPo, cough it up!!!

  38. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Found it!!! I am Epic Win!!

  39. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Let’s face it…..the only one who could resign and help the economy is the rube in the White House.

    1. Isn’t that what this is all about? It is obvious what the right is trying to do and what is more obvious is why. Things really haven’t changed much over the decades.

  40. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Let’s see if Tax-Cheat Timmy Geithner goes now.

  41. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Moon-howler :
Isn’t that what this is all about? It is obvious what the right is trying to do and what is more obvious is why. Things really haven’t changed much over the decades.

I don’t know…I think the divisions are MUCH deeper. And it’s not just Congress, it’s the American people. I’m sorry, but businesses just will not hire until Obama and his cabinet are gone.

  42. Cargosquid

So, S&P tells us why they downgraded us – its because we are spendthrift fools that can’t reduce spending.

Senator Reid stated that, if we raised the debt ceiling, there would be no downgrade. He stated that the ratings agencies were going to downgrade us because of default. The same Senator that refused even to debate the bills from the House that would have lowered the spending rates enough to prevent this.

Now, I will report that gov’t officials state that S&P made a $2 trillion dollar mistake in their math. They must use gov’t accountants. If so, I expect the gov’t to fight this. S&P did, however, refuse to reverse their decision when it was pointed out to them.

    Moon-howler :
Isn’t that what this is all about? It is obvious what the right is trying to do and what is more obvious is why. Things really haven’t changed much over the decades.

What this is all about is that a ratings agency downgraded us because of Obama/Reid policies. What’s obvious to everyone is that the Democrats refused to heed the warnings. But, if Obama wants to honorable resign for being the first President to have the ratings dropped in 70 years, I’ll applaud. But I’m not going to demand it. I am curious as to why YOU think why, because its not obvious to me. WHAT hasn’t changed much over the decades?

    Prof. Jacobsen at http://legalinsurrection.com/2011/08/sp-drops-u-s-credit-rating-to-aa/

Democrats own the downgrade. They fought Republicans and Tea Party supporters every step of they way, and forced a deal which was insufficient. They played class warfare and race politics against arguments that we needed to drastically change our spending habits.

This is Barack Obama and Harry Reid’s crowning achievement.

Something to lighten the mood, stolen from another blog, Marooned

    Priest’s Retirement Dinner

A Priest was being honored at his retirement dinner after 25 years in the parish.

A leading local politician and member of the congregation was chosen to make the presentation and to give a little speech at the dinner. However, he was delayed, so the Priest decided to say his own few words while they waited, ‘I got my first impression of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place.

The very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen a television set and, when questioned by the police, was able to lie his way out of it. He had stolen money from his parents, embezzled from his employer, had an affair with his boss’ wife, taken illegal drugs, and gave VD to his sister. I was appalled! But as the days went on I learned that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of good and loving people.’

Just as the Priest finished his talk, the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and gave his talk, ‘I’ll never forget the first day our parish Priest arrived,’ said the politician.

‘In fact, I had the honor of being the first person to go to him for confession.’

Moral: Never, Never, Never Be Late

  44. Pat.Herve

Obama wanted the bigger deal – it was Boener and team that wanted a short term deal for political reasons.

The bigger deal may have prevented the downgrade – Congress just kicked the can down the road (again) with no real substance that can be measured.

  45. marinm

Pat, I think anything short of Cut, Cap and Balance would’ve sparked a downgrade.

  46. @marin, but that is just your opinion. The S & P pretty much said what it wanted. Of course, maybe its time to give them the finger also.

The S & P wasn’t holding out for no revenue on the table.
