Another sign of the dog days of summer–an annual cicada shell, left over from molting.
These shells have delighted many a kid over the generations.
Kids, its all coming to an abrupt all all too soon. Put down the video games and get outside!

God didn’t tell me that Obama is a socialist. Obama told me he was a socialist. Just read what he has written, listen to what he says, and watch what he does.
And God doesn’t speak to be about taxes, other than, “Render unto Caesar…..” Its just that I think Caesar doesn’t need more of my money to waste.
I don’t have any idea who the winner will be, Wolverine. I don’t know of any clueless fellows who fit that description.
No one has shown me anyone a bit better than the president we have and I didn’t see anyone better three years ago.
If Ms. Palin would stop trying to upstage Mr. Romney you all might be able to offer him up. He at least acts presidential.
@Cargo, please don’t tell state that Obama is a socialist on my blog. You know it isn’t true and I don’t want to get a bad reputation in the blogosphere for being a socialist birther type.
I’ll tell you, Moon. That speech the POTUS gave up in Holland yesterday was a real stunner. A principal theme was criticism of the Congress for not proposing any jobs bills. Imagine that. Criticism of someone else from a feller who has the entire Federal government economic establishment at his beck and call for sending specific jobs ideas to the Congress. FDR would have cringed at the mere thought of such a presidential pity party. The whole thing is sort of like having a four-star military theater commander standing on the battlefield with his thousands upon thousands of troops and complaining because the staff back home hasn’t sent him a battle plan. This guy in the Oval Office is flailing around — and failing.
I didn’t hear his speech.
I expect you would have said that 2 days after he was in office, don’t you think?
I suppose that it is now up to you all to nominate someone who is presidential. So far that field doesn’t look real promising. It wasn’t very promising in 2008 either which is why you have Obama.
Offer up a decent candidate who will appeal to mainstream America would my advice.
It will be interesting to see if Sarah Palin gets a reprimand from Fox News. She spoke about how Newt fought back at the lame stream media. Interestingly enough, the press that were asking the gotcha questions that Newt objected to were Chris Wallace and Brett Baier, both of Fox News. Doesn’t Fox News employee Sarah Palin?
That was the very discussion we all had 2 weeks ago with Bob Beckel and Greg Gotfeld? They both said they were careful about what they said about her. Apparently Sarah doesn’t go by the same professional standards as Beckel and Gotfeld.
No, I dont think so (sentence #2). In the first place, because of the way his campaign was run and the lack of access to truly in-depth background materials on him, I , like a lot of others, had no clue as to what kind of leader he would actually make. I read his books and listened to him speak. The speeches turned out to be effective, Svengali-like campaign tools based on buzz words and abetted by a miserable ending to the administration of Bush II and a not very adept opponent for the election. However, we are now closing in on the third year of his term. Where he could be forgiven for errors in the beginning, it looks to me like this fellow is now trying to win a second term by whining about others in order to cover a very thin record of personal economic/fiscal accomplishments.
I do not see leadership here. I see someone who is in way over his head on many things and who does not have what it takes to seize the true initiative with a solid command of the problems. Repetitive speeches full of platitudes and laying blame on others cannot be substituted for clear policy plans. He lacks what Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson had and what Bill Clinton grasped effectively once he made up his mind that he had to deal seriously with a Republican Congress. He should count himself very fortunate that he had Hillary as his SecState, because, in my opinion, that gal has carried a lot of water for him and has certainly impressed me where I thought I would never be impressed. Unfortunately, I (and others) are beginning to suspect that Hillary is being cut out of too many things at the center of power; and that would be a large mistake. On the economic/fiscal side of the equation, he has not been served well by his much too ideological staff, many of whom have already bailed out. Moreover, he has let the EPA run amuk as if it was an independent agency and thereby created a regulatory impediment to his greatest need: creation of jobs in the private sector. On the security side he got lucky in a couple of instances. From what I can see, Panetta did a very good job, especially for someone without any experience in intelligence matters, and Gates held the fort well in the midst of two tough wars. By carrying so much important water, those three, Hillary, Leon Panetta, and Gates, allowed POTUS the time, for the most part, to focus on two of the big elephants in the room: the economy and the deficit. We have yet to see real accomplishments. But we are now into another political blame game leading to 2012.
I listened to his speech and I agree with 95% of it. I have not changed my tune.
It is important to remember that the president is not longer a legislator.
I don’t think it is possible for you all to find someone electible who you won’t turn on. I saw that happen with George Bush. I imagine he is delighted to be retired.
