Apparently sound side is getting it much worse than ocean front. The wind drives the water out of the sound and when it comes back, things flood.
The first picture is the sound with no water, second is when it came back. It seems all the reporters are covering the beach, which hasn’t flooded much. But the problems are on the sound side.
The above picture is from the sound.
All the water came back.
These pictures are from the Duck Area, I believe.
Not Duck, NC….the video and those two pictures are way south. Atlantic Beach is along Topsail Island (come out of Jacksonville, go past Sneads Ferry and continue over the Intercoastal Waterway to the barrier island known as Topsail). Just past that is Surf City.
That’s my old stomping grounds. Beach erosion does not happen much there as it is pretty flat, plus if it hits the dunes, they are solid with beach grass plantings (did a LOT of that as a Boy Scout in the 60s on that whole barrier island). Storm surge is a constant issue with ‘caines down there on the stretch from Sneads Ferry to Morehead City. Behind the barrier islands is the Intercoastal Waterway which fills, then as the video shows, the wind drives it back up. Elevation for the most part along that stretch averages around 15’ above sea level, so easy for the water to flow.
Yes, the video is Atlantic Beach. Sorry, I thought it said so on the video. I was led to believe that the pictures were from either Duck or Kitty Hawk area. They are OBX at least and not as far down as Atlantic beach.
In lookig harder at the boat ramp, looks like one up by Hammocks Beach up near Emerald Isle. The guy wading in the Intercoastal most likely was down by Atlantic Beach. Too narrow to be by Duck as Cumtuck Sound is between the barrier island Duck sits on the Caratoke Penninsula. Waterway narrows as you get down along Topsail.
Duck is way up by Elizabeth City, about a half hour away and about an hour down from VA border. But yup, all the Outer Banks, although my preference always has been between Morehead City and Wilmington to run. Get up on that North Side of the OBX and it was always too many tourists 🙂
I agree about too many tourists. I rarely go down there to our week now. The beach has also been badly eroded away.
Now this is my stomping grounds:
