I actually feel sorry for Peter Candland and I will tell you why. Apparently, his M.O. now is to attack Ann Wheeler for her statement “I am not an ideologue”. From the blog he is promoting on his official facebook page:
This is a candidate that does not want to be associated with any political ideology, particularly the Democratic platform.
Let me share why I feel sorry for Mr. Candland. I have had the privilege of working with people from many different perspectives in Prince William County on various issues, from land use, to power lines, to parks, to Silver Lake, to public school issues, et al. I have built friendships with people that do not share the exact same political belief system as I do. You know what, I am proud to call them friends.
Ann Wheeler is telling Gainesville citizens that she is interested in solving problems based on best solutions not based on whether you have an R or a D by your name. Isn’t that what we all want, people interested in coming together to solve problems!
Does Peter Candland believe that Prince William County residents want our local government to emulate the dysfunction we see happening the National level? I for one do not. Is Peter Candland’s message to the Gainesville District one of divisiveness?
Does Mr. Candland understand that in order for a Democracy to be healthy, we must have differing opinions, and vigorous debate? Mr. Candland being a Republican is no more unacceptable than Ann Wheeler being a Democrat.
Peter Candland clearly prefers to have a very small and myopic circle of friends and associates, ones that only share his point of view on all issues.
As an elected leader, it is critical that one have the ability and interest to reach out to those with whom you may have differing opinions in order to find the best solutions.
I can’t find any reference to quote in your post on the facebook page you mentioned. Where did you find it?
I will answer for Elena. It a blogsite referenced from his facebook page. Sorry, they don’t get free advertisement from me.
Hi Observer,
Because I have no interest in promoting his blog, if you look Peter Candlands facebook page, you will see where he has been promoting it.
Found it. I just hadn’t scrolled far enough down the page. Thanks.
@Observer
Glad you found that BS site on the Candyland FB wall. 🙂
I don’t see how a person can represent all the people of the Gainesville District if they are blinded by ideology.
The candy-land blog quotes the following:
You have got to be kidding me. We are talking about local government here. If this is Mr. Candland’s position then I would claim that it makes him unsuitable for the office of Gainesville supervisor. Frankly, I don’t really care much about the R or D behind a person’s name when it comes to sueprvisor. I want to know how that person feels about education, land use, response time to community concerns, and public safety, to name a few hot topics.
Someone coming in here with a hidden agenda is not what we need in Prince William County. Frankly, it sounds like the blog-keeper recommended by Candland wants to run roughshod over the rest of us.
I actually can’t think of a decision facing our supervisors that one could decide on ideology. I will be asking Candland that question in the near future. Exactly what ideological decisions will our supervisors be making?
psssssst–Candland and Candyland blog-keeper–if I wanted to win an election, I would be making nice and trying to convince people that I was a good guy. I would be making friends, not enemies. You all are making this election sound like conversion by the sword.
What is it we are being converted to, just out of curiosity?
Looks like the Candy-land website has changed their way of thinking from the initial email that went out to announce his announcement. I guess after he beat the campaign trail, he’s now decided to include the Manassas portion. Now reads……”I want to preserve a great community for my children and for future families in Western Prince William County.”
Now, that is inclusive of our district. However, those of in Manassas we certainly dissed in that email he wants to keep Gainesville and Haymarket great place to raise your children. BIG MISTAKE!!
I have my husband working on my flag when the secession takes place in early January. I think after he draws the flag. I will make one, and might have to give them to a few of my neighbors for Christmas gifts. 🙂
Still pondering” He’s a ‘life long’ conservative”……and the point. What does that tell me? He supports abortion doctor shootings, anti-environment programs, shutting down all collective bargaining, better tax cuts for corporations?
Or is he okay with same sex marriage, and would protect the rural crescent unless he too could make some money on it and has issues with corporate welfare.
“Conservative'”is becoming as dirty, as pointless and as polarizing as “liberal”.
Very excellent point, Juturna. What exactly does that mean?
I still want to know what ideology he would be voting on locally if he is elected.
I am still chuckling over you making note that people rarely are born conservative or liberal.
I still am pondering why a political candidate would start casting aspersions on a local blogger who was minding her own business and not messing with his campaign.
I cannot imagine why the name calling started. This blog was not involved in the supervisors’ primary races, by design. We felt the people of PWC were capable of making their own choices without our two cents being put into the mix. Who we privately supported was never a part of this blog until the Candland campaign started talking smack.
How smart is it to go to war with a local blog before a primary when they are ignoring you? DUH!!!!!
Furthermore, Elena was attacked over a post *I* had written regarding abortion rights. Candland campaign–it is Moonhowler you want over this issue. I am the one here who writes the stuff on reproductive rights.
I have read where we have worked against the current immigration laws in PWC. That also is a lie. Once the probable cause component was removed from the books, no problem. Everyone is treated the same. That seems fair. We have always supported 287(g) and I defy anyone to show differently. So that also is a lie being told.
Camp Candland, get it right, apologize to Elena and we can move forward. Psssst-Elena isn’t running for office.
Elena was an easy enemy for Corey, Candland and crew to create. Hendley was the clear frontruner, but would not buy into Corey’s developer schemes and other brewing scandals if elected. Corey needs a photogenic, mindless automoton to rubber stamp whatever he’s told to vote for. Candland fit the bill perfectly. Hendley had signed the Rural Crescent pledge and has worked hard for many, many years on behalf of the people of the Gainesville District and Prince William County. The only way to beat her was to vilify her as a left-wing, illegal alien loving nutcase. That’s exactly what they did, regardless of the truth about Elena or Hendley. I’ve read Wheeler’s website, and have had the chance to meet her. She’s light years more qualified to be supervisor than Candland, in experience, maturity and commitment to public service. Unfortunately, Corey, Candland, etc. will probably engineer her defeat just as they did Hendley’s. I’m very gloomy about Prince William County and its future now.
@Theseus
It sounds like Candland is just a tool for Corey Stewart.
I understand how that engineering works though and also where it comes from. I have been told a few direct quotes.
How stupid to poke a stick in the face of a blog that is doing you no harm. Not one of the better moves…..
There are lots of folks who will be working behind the scenes on this one now and frankly, not a one of them is a Democrat. That only leaves two groups.
Well, as long as he’s a Republican, he’ll get elected. Around here he could be an axe murderer and get elected just because he’s a republilcan. Makes my teeth hurt. Maybe that’s why traffic is so bad? That is a non relative correllation that seems to be popular around here as well.
Grrrrrhhhhhh – maybe we should test people prior to voting. Anyone can have a child, get a gun, buy a car and vote. But ever try walking into a bank to change a $50 when you don’t have an account there?
We need a ‘makes sense’ party – who would corner it first the Red or Blue people?
The NoLabels.org group is having a telephone conference tomorrow night. I will send you the flyer.
They are advocating good ideas, not party. Good ideas generate from everywhere.
http://www.nolabels.org
Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks is one of their spokesmen.
@theseus
so depressing when you put it like that!
But I will remain hopeful that enough republicans will vote candidate and not party this time around. I have talked to several and the message I am getting is loud and clear, Candland is not their guy,no matter what designation he puts by his name.
And the Republicans who are pissed off are pissed off because Camp Candland went after a PWC lady who has spent decades trying to make PWC a better place to live. Going after Martha Hendley in a vile way was not a smart move.
In the first place, she knows light-years more about how PWC runs. She isn’t a Johnny-come lately. Anything on Martha’s resume, she accomplished. Candland’s mistake was using something on his political resume that he didn’t really do. All of us understand that things happen that make us unable to complete an obligation. However, you don’t list it on your resume.
To use Elena as some sort of evil foil to attack Martha was just common and dirty. What was said about Elena wasn’t true and Elena wasn’t actively involved in the Hendley campaign. So, they lied. I think more to the point, someone associated with Camp Candland has a bug up her behind about Elena and so the lies started to flow. Someone needs to learn to do the right thing and not lie about others for political gain. How about it.
Candland needs to verify information for himself. Who wants a supervisor who listens to gossip?
@Moon-howler
well said..amen
