The weather has finally broken.  It was down right chilly this last night and this morning.  What a nice break.  The dog run was very quick this morning.  They were sure surprised.

Fall is in the air for sure.

    Looks like we have some more tastings at our local ABC Package Stores this weekend.

    Hurry up and get your tickets to the inaugural Corey Stewart Classic, whatever that is. Hell, maybe he’ll hire some of the new homeless to help serve.

    1. What is that inaugural classic? It can’t be a golf invitational. It looks like we are going to have to send George in disguise to scoop it out.

    This time the theme is “the 40oz Malt Liquor through history”. Participants will be tasting the following fine brands (each nicely wrapped in a brown paper bag):

    45 Colt
    Mickey’s
    Old English 800
    King Cobra
    Schlitz and
    Hurricane

  4. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Yup!

  5. I am gullible. I believed you. It souunded like a great tasting event. I was going to go.

  6. So what’s good on the new fall line up? I HATE reality shows. I watched Ringer and liked it.

  7. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Might have been an interesting discussion about the whole “let ’em die” question and health care. What Ron Paul Should have said was “How difficult is it to understand cause-effect, action-consequence?” The only answer I’ve heard so far from the left is government coercion. Neither side has a good answer. When neither side of an argument has a nice, iron-clad argument….that’s interesting!

    Big Day In Old Town Manassas
    – Annual Edgar Rohr Memorial antique car show on the museum lawn.
    – Old World Food Festival at the Harris Pavilion.
    – Beer, Bands and Barbeque event near the Center For The Arts

    And tomorrow afternoon-
    – The Annual Manassas Hispanic Festival at the Harris Pavilion

  9. Lafayette

    I would like to add that today’s event in old town Manassas is NOT free.
    Tickets are $20 for Taster-Ticket and Non Taster-Tickets are $10. For more information or to purchase tickets (ticket prices will increase $5 at the door), call 703.361.6599

    1. I heard a report that people are sneaking in. @ lafayette

      Same person who reported the 2 chickens on King George reported the sneakers in to me.

  10. Lafayette

    @Moon-howler
    Good, they can find me and give me the scoop!

    BOK, BOK, BOK!!! You are kiddin’ me, right?

    1. No, I wasn’t kidding. It was personally observed. @Lafayette

  11. Big Dog

    The Antique Car Show was free and entrance to the Old World Festival with music
    and dance was n/c- but food and drink were for sell. The Annual Hispanic Festival
    tomorrow will also have no entrance fee but items will be for sell by venders.

    Loved it all – especially the cars. Remember drolling over 1966 Corvettes when they came
    out — and now they are antiques! Also great to see a 1957 Chevy – had a used one
    in HS as my first car.

    1. @big dog, what color was the 57 chevy? I remember a nice red and white one–convertible. Not mine. I also remember drooling over the corvettes and not being able to afford one. That hasn’t changed although I no longer lust for one. At some point getting in and out without bashing your brains in takes over self image.

    @Big Dog

    And as an added bonus to a day of activities, it was capped off with the rescheduled from last Saturday by “Stories in Stone” – the Manassas Musuem Tour of both the Manassas City Cemetary, and located within the same grounds, the Confederate Cemetary (owned and maintained by the UDC).

    Fascinating to learn the City side of the cemetary has a Union Sergeant buried there who was a Medal of Honor receipient in the Civil War….and he is the only one in the greater Prince William Area who has it.

    1. Thank you, Ray. What is this guy’s name?

  13. Lafayette

    I went and enjoyed the free stuff. I should’ve known an event by HMI would mean an entrance fee. I did take in all of the free activities. You could still see and listen to the bands on the sidewalk, for free. I spent the most time looking at the cars and took a few pictures, but only of Chevy’s. I watched some dancing and brought my mom home some baklava.

    1. Lafayette, maybe you should explain this thing with chevys?

  14. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    OK, I could stream the undercard fights last night, and they were very good, but Mayweather-Ortiz was a little past my bedtime. Ortiz made a bad decision with the headbutt, and “defend yourself at all times” mean just that. Mayweather’s win may be a little cheapened, but I can’t blame him for what he did.

    Hola! Great music, dance and food.

  17. Lafayette

    @Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Here, here!! My dad sold Chevy’s and did fleet bidding for VDOT, PD’s and Fire Depts contracts. One cousin owned a dealership. Chevy is in my blood…I bleed Chevy white. 😉

    Hola! Great music, dance and food.

    Once upon a time, Herndon used to have a Latino festival, a joyful and merry event, but then, for some reason, the Town “fathers” decided that it was to costly. The reason might have been, also, that the “fathers” didn’t like Latin music – or something.

    1. Latin music definitely sets off some in Prince William County. The City handles things like Latin music in stride. They have bands at the pavillion frequently–no special occassion.

      The City of Manassas really is a role model for having events that appeal to different audiences. The great thing is, everyone can enjoy.

  19. marinm

    @Lafayette

    There is still a large part of me that has a soft spot for Chevy. I still have a 03 Envoy. I also still have fond memories of my 94 Camaro Z28 but I’ve never had an American car that was issue free. All of them have been union made.

    My two most recent non-union foreign cars have been without issue.

    Every Sunday I cheer on the #48 Chevy but I don’t think I could pull the trigger on buying one. Even the new Camaro (that car is SWEET) until it’s manufactured in the non-union South.

  20. Emma

    The Third Annual Greater Manassas Veterans Day Parade will be held on Saturday, November 12, at 11 am in Old Town. the 2011 parade will include a “Welcome Home” Community Event on Parade Day for our Vietnam Veterans.

    For more info, go to http://www.vetpar.org/

  21. Lafayette

    @marinm
    I’m more hung up on buying American, than worried about the union workers building it. You do realize most of the grocery stores in our area are union? Or do you shop at the PX for groceries? When I win the lottery I will have my new Camaro. I guess I better play to win. 🙂

    I had to have Chevy buy a 99 Malibu back from me. This was NO easy task. I didn’t give up on Chevy then, and doubt I will anytime soon. It kept me clothed, food in my stomach, roof over my head, along with many prizes my dad won over the years. My most cherished item is my wood French Provencial canopy bed, dresser, desk and hutch, which are still being used by my stepdaughter and my first two wheeler bike.

  22. Steve Thomas

    @marinm
    marinm,

    I too was a die-hard chevy man. My first two cars were Ford products (68 Cougar, 73 comet) but then it was all GM, except for when I was stationed in Japan. Same for Mrs. T. I have a 93 S-10 I bought to reward myself for graduating college and getting my commission. 141K and runs like a champ (am considering restoring it). Mrs. T drives it back and forth to work. I drive a Saturn Vue. Love that car. The only issue we have ever had was on a Tahoe we owned: Transmission went out at 50K. We fixed it and traded it in on an Armada.

    I am with you. The way the GM bankruptcy (not the bailout…the actual bankruptcy where secured creditors were told to p/o by the Obama admin, and preference was given to the UAW) was handled has poisoned that well for me. I while I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a used GM, I will never, ever purchase a new GM product. Mrs. T agrees: our next new vehicle will most likely be a Ford, although another Nissan or even a KIA might end up in our driveway. Shame…I still love a Chevy.

  23. Lafayette

    @marinm
    The 5th generation Camaros are made in Oshawa, Ontario. I know Chevy trucks built in Canada gave a decent track record.

  24. Cindy B

    The City of Manassas Neighborhood Conference has been moved to Nov. 19 at the Boys & Girls Club so it won’t conflict with the Veteran’s Parade and “Welcome Home” Community Event in Old Town Manassas. The five Grand Marshals are Vietnam Veterans representing the all the branches of service.

  25. Pittsburg and Syracuse will join the ACC. Not sure how this will help the ACC. Opinions vary.

  26. Why don’t we grab Ahmadinejad today when he arrives at the UN, accuse him of trespassing, and hold him ransom until we get those 2 guys back.

    If they want a million for them, then we charge a million for Ahmadinejad.

    Seems fair to me.

  27. The DVD end of Netflix will change its name to Qwikster. The streaming movies will stay Netflix. Dumb idea. Who can spell it? I had to cut and paste to get it right. Why do companies who have a good thing going always try to screw it up. This reminds me of the New Coke debacle. I wonder where that moron is now?

    This is justification for blasting us with the rate increase. I already scaled back my membership. The streaming part just doesn’t have a great selection.

  28. Need to Know

    @Moon-howler

    Somebody else will have to do the grabbing. I saw a news report (seriously) that the guy never baths and stinks so badly that no one can sit neat him. Maybe it’s a secutiry measure to avoid getting grabbed.

    However, I like the notion of holding him for same amount of ransom money he’s demanding for the hikers.

  29. marinm

    @Lafayette

    The Oshawa plant is under the Canadian Auto Workers union (CAW). So, same crap quality but at least the Canadian’s are nicer about it. 😉

    Steve. Funny story. The first car I bought with a bank loan was a 94 Mustang GT 5.0. I think I was 20? Maybe 19. The car was stunningly beautiful. It also only took me less than 2 months to wrap her around a tree. So, what does my dumb ass do? Buy the 94 Z28 from the same dealership when the insurance check clears. I think my reasoning at the time was if I had more horsepower and a bigger engine that I could avoid the ‘moving trees’ in Virginia.

    To this day everytime I drive by Potomac Mills Mall I salute where Mustang One died.

    I thought Wegman’s wasn’t union?? That’s where my wife shops (me? do grocery shopping???)

    1. @Marin

      Wegman’s has very high ratings as far as employee satisfaction goes. Not sure if they are union or not but usually happy employees aren’t in an all fired hurry to go union. Considering where home office is for Wegmans though, it makes more sense that it is union than say, Food Lion (NC) or Winn Dixie.

    The market was great last week but doesn’t look good this morning –
    beware of Greeks bearing bonds.

    1. Oh I see them, Big Dog and they have big snarling teeth. Once Cato sics his bears on us, we are screwed. I have read it is still European market jitters.

      I am getting tired of all of them.

    Where the heck has MoM been?

  34. To the troll (DC) who keeps leaving notes for me, even though he knows I am not going to take him out of moderation–Elena and I will not approve your comments. Stop leaving them. Your comments offer nothing positive to this blog. They do not add to the conversation since you come with your own agenda, not with the topics offered. You were given several chances to change your behavior and apparently that is not going to happen.

    I may have to try out a different feature of word press.

    But what happens when no one pays the ransom? Do we hose him down with a fire hose and then send him to Guantanamo?

  37. Pat.Herve

    can the unions be blamed for manufacturing of bad cars – who created the bad designs (Aztec), bad quality, and inferior parts? Where was QA?

    When I worked at a manufacturing company – if a supplier sent us inferior or defective parts – we sent them back, with a bill. Before products left our production line, they were tested – union or non union – it does not matter – Management accepted the product being shipped.

    Can you blame the union for outdated work rules – yes, but you can also blame management. Can you blame the union for shielding bad employees – yes, but that is what they promise to do. But to blame the union for non quality products is misplacing the blame.

    I had to tell Moon that I got one of those air-swimmers for my kid’s birthday party! Saw it here first! Got the shark one.

    1. How neat! Where did you find the shark??

  39. Lafayette

    @SlowpokeRodriguez
    They are so cool. Have you had it “swimming” yet?

  40. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    They’re at Toys R Us on Sudley Rd., next to Party Co. They have little helium tanks you can get with them. I have to wait until closer to his birthday party to put it together, lest he sees it/finds it. He has a way of getting around…….every-freakin-where!

    1. @Pokie

      Christmas is going to be a bitch, keeping those presents hidden. When is little Mr. Snoop’s birthday? Will you video the shark? Elena had the nerve to ask me if air swimming wasn’t the same thing as flying. I got highly indignant. Did you see a dophin while shopping?

  41. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Obama cleared things up today: “This is not class warfare” loosely translates into “this is class warfare”.

    1. What do you think it is now? @ Pokie

      Do you honestly want money to come off your parents’ medicare and social security rather than from a millionaire who probably won’t even miss it?

  42. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    Moon-howler :

    I wouldn’t mind it at all if millionaires paid more, but only insomuch as it’s not ME paying more. However, I think lower the rates, closing the loopholes, and broadening the base is a better idea. And shame on Obama for AGAIN saying “if my wishes are not granted, grandma and grandpa will just have to die!” Obama doubles down on the shamefulness. But that’s OK, I can see his whole administration coming apart at the seams.

    1. @slowpoke, I like seeing him this way. He was far too concilliatory for too long. Bet I misspelled it.

    There was only shark and clown fish. Dolphin’s tail would go up and down instead of side to side, so there would be a lot of extra manufacturing for just one species (barring whales). I don’t know about videoing the thing. we don’t have a video camera…I can try using the iPhone or one of my several iPods. Little snooper’s birthday is 31 July…he just turned one. Got his first haircut yesterday.

    An explanation of the LightSquared “scandal” – I think that it is or will be a scandal. This is what corruption and graft look like in the information age – big, ballsy, large-scale corruption and graft.

    When an information carrier wants to buy “bandwidth” for use in wireless communications, they buy it from the government, after approval by the FCC. Wireless providers are buying “terrestrial” bandwidth. It is different from “satellite” bandwidth. The terrestrial repeaters, cell phone towers, etc. are far enough removed frequency-wise from satellite bandwidths that they do not clobber the satellite-bandwidth signals that are being sent up and down to/from the satellites all the time (GPS, television content, and classified systems as well as massed cell phone data).

    The two don’t mix and match. If you start using bandwidths that are close to the satellite bandwidths for terrestrial use, i.e. cell phones and wireless data, the interference will clobber GPS devices and satellite signal senders/receivers. Near cell phone towers and repeater devices, the interference will be especially bad. GPS/satellite devices expect to have do some filtering out of interference in nearby bandwidths. But they don’t expect that interference to be so much stronger than the signal that they are looking for, as will be the case if someone on the ground starts using and generating in the frequencies set aside for satellite use. When you’re communicating with something up above the troposphere, it’s goping to be much more difficult and less reliable if the cell phone tower next to you is using a similar frequency, and its signal is infinitely stronger.

    A small company called LightSquared made a speculative investment in a spectrum block used for satellite signals. The company is owned by Democratic donors. After purchase, they asked the FCC for permission to use these bandwidths in a terrestrial context, for the purpose of lowering cost of wireless communications in America. This should be a no-brainer – no, you can’t do that. We can’t retrofit every GPS-oriented radio and classified device in the world to shield itself from your signals. If a reallocation such as this is to be done, it needs to be rolled out over time.

    But, the FCC instead gave LightSquared permission to proceed with their plans, and has been putting pressure on the GPS community to “prove” there is an issue here “within 90 days” – a reversal of responsibility (and an abrogation of responsibility on the FCC’s part). Playacting as if this is ready to go, imminantly, and that LightSquared can start implementing their network shortly.

    I for one have never believed that the FCC and the President would allow this to implementation, that they would want to clobber existing GPS and air traffic systems and classified military applications. But they sure have been interested in pretending that they are about to. And somebody’s been making a killing on stock price I assume.

    And now that the story has finally come to prominance and is becoming a political football, it will be interesting to learn of the machinations that took us to this point, the politicization of the FCC’s oversight of the spectrum, and the ways in which our Executive Branch tries to massage the testimony of military generals.

    1. It sounds like I need to buy one of Emma’s tin foil hats to be able to understand all this. @Rick

      PS How did your Sunday without us go?

  46. Rick Bentley

    I tried to simplify it!

    Had a good Sunday, thanks. Go Redskins!

  47. Rick Bentley

    Let me boil it down further : Obama’s Administration is at least as corrupt as any other that I can remember. The graft and corruption are being done in new ways, based around “green technologies” and “bridging the wireless gap”.
