  11. Twinad

    Congrats, Moonhowler!

  12. Thanks everyone. We are getting quite a tribe here. I will have to say, I have never seen a man so crazy about a baby as my son over Miss Olivia.

    Those folks that like to photograph fungi or mushrooms might want to take a walk down the treed path in Hellwig Park. There are plenty of them – new and in varying stages of decay.

  14. punchak

    @Big Dog

    Nice read. Thanks!

  15. Lafayette

    Moon-howler :Thanks everyone. We are getting quite a tribe here. I will have to say, I have never seen a man so crazy about a baby as my son over Miss Olivia.

    He’s lit up like a Christmas tree in a picture I saw of him holding Miss Olivia. Can you say PROUD PAPA? I looked so happy and at peace. I love babies and they magic they bring to all.

    There’s a chick that’s been steady posting pictures on insidenova’s FB wall. I had no idea there were that many species of ‘shrooms here in PW.

  17. Censored bybvbl

    @Lafayette

    I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many types of ‘shrooms in one area. It’s been so damp that there’s been an abundance of them. The walk through the woods is quite short – about a mile. A person could find plenty of them by doing only a small portion of the trail. The only time I mushroom hunt is in the early spring when I search our yard for morels. I’ve found them a few times but never in abundance.

  18. Lafayette

    @Censored bybvbl
    I might have to a walk through there tomorrow. I’d also be curious to see how wet and swampy the place is after all of this rain. Never in abundance in the hood, eh? Why do I have a hard time believing that one? 😉

  19. Censored bybvbl

    @Lafayette

    There are a few areas where a stream (usually dry) runs under the walkway but the path is dry. The county does a good job of maintaining the trail considering that it gets wash-boarded in places after a heavy downpour.

  20. Where the hell is hellwig park?

  21. Rick Bentley

    Moon has been kind enough to claim that she enjoys my movie recommendations. For her or anyone else who wants a movie recommended to them every day, I am doing so at a wordpress blog http://www.movierecommends.wordpress.com . And if you friend me on Facebook my recommendation will turn up there as well.

    Congrats to Herman Cain for his cakewalk romp in the Florida straw poll. I’m for his Nine Ninety-Nine plan if he’ll throw in some breadsticks and a 2-liter grape Nehi. I don’t know if Cain can hold his 37% together. On the other hand, I believe Michele Bachmann can count on the fidelity of her 1%.

  27. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    I too am a fan of Herman Cain and his 999 plan. I’m somewhat blown away by Cain winning the FL straw-poll, but I love it, love it, love it!

  28. Morris Davis

    I would like to see some credible group run the numbers on the 999 plan to see what it would likely generate and what it means for taxpayers. It sounds good, but there’s always the rule of unintended consequences. It would be interesting to see how those who have a hard time accepting Obama because of his race react if they have Cain as the only other serious choice.

    1. hmmmm. Moe, just what are you suggesting?

      I don’t know what his 999 plan is. I thought it sounded satanic. 👿

  29. Big Dog

    From some of the crowd response at recent Republican debates,
    it sounds like some GOPers would prefer a 666 plan.

  30. Lafayette

    Big Dog :From some of the crowd response at recent Republican debates,it sounds like some GOPers would prefer a 666 plan.

    Very funny. Does that 666 plan apply to the local(PW & CoM) GOP too? 👿

    @Lafayette

    Most of the locals(City Council and BOCS) are not that rabid. They just need to grow spines when they’re confronted with a vocal fringe.

  32. Lafayette

    @Censored bybvbl
    They might not be that rabid here. But imagine a couple of them at the state and national level. I agree on growing the spines, and add grow a pair.

  33. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    First, opposition to Obama because of his race is, of course, a liberal fantasy. The people who have a problem with his race don’t vote.
    With the drivel out of the way, we can focus on the interesting stuff. I doubt very seriously that one could ever get a truly unbiased, mathematical analysis of 999. It is such a dramatic shift in tax policy that I don’t think we could know exactly what would happen until it happens. In other words, I’d be skeptical of anyone who said they could account for what you mention….unintended consequences. For me, the prime example of unintended consequences is health care in the last 40 years. People wanted health care to be a certain way, and they got what they wanted. Afterwards, we found we didn’t like it. Unintended. Obamacare on the other hand is the very intentional destruction of the entire system (and viewed that way….maybe NOT such a bad thing.) I have seen a few initial looks at 999, and a surprising number of them said “it just might work”. Phrases like deficit neutral within 7 years (WOW). Now I couldn’t tell you if those sources were all completely biased or not. Like I said….I don’t know if we ever really could see an unbiased opinion.

    1. @pokie,

      Not sure who you have been talking to but I of all sorts of people who will not vote for Obama because of his race and have pretty much said so. They vote but it isn’t for Obama. I am curious why you think people who won'[t vote for a black don’t vote. Have you forgotten where you are? I also expect it isn’t limited to here.

  34. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    What is REALLY interesting about this whole Cain-999 thing is that this is the first time in many moons that the right and left talk about something without hostility. That is really rare these days.

  35. Big Dog

    Interesting article on the front page of today’s WaPo Outlook section about
    the challenge of moderates often being left with nobody to select from
    on election day except ideologues – of the right and left.

    My favorite in the GOP field is Jon Hunstman. Pragmatic, reasoned and with
    a strong background in private business, government AND international relations.
    Of course, right now he is below 3% in most polls.

    1. Totally agree with you, Big Dog. How did I miss that article. I have been howling about this very issue for a long time. I am soooo sick of everyone’s ideology on the left and the right.

      I also like Huntsman. He doesn’t have a chance. He is too much of a centrist. I don’t like everything about him but out of the field of GOP selectees, he is the top dog in my book. I pretty much think the rest of them are fools. Romney doesn’t have to be one, but he chooses to be.

  36. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    I realize the the liberal world-view requires people to vote against Obama because he’s half black, but it’s his policies. The conservative world-view doesn’t need racism to exist.

  37. How about those people who simply state that they won’t vote for him because he is black? Are you denying those people exist? @pokie

    I am not saying that every one who doesn’t vote for Obama has racial issues. But some people do. Some people didn’t vote for JFK because he was Catholic. Some people didn’t vote for Fritz Mondale or McCain because there were women on the tickets. Just is.

  38. Boardwalk Empire starts up again tonight. Gangsters, Prohibition, kept women. Life is good.

  39. Elena

    I know that people hate Obama because of his color. He is seen as an other and its that simple. Heard people say things about Obama that has nothing to do with Policy. NEVER EVER heard people deride Bush on his color, policy yes, lack of forethought yes, color……nope never.

  40. marinm

    Does that make anyone that voted for Obama ONLY on the basis of his skin also equally racist?

    1. @marin, no one has used the word ‘racist’ that I am aware of. Lots of people voted for Obama because he was black. No one is saying they didn’t.

      I don’t necessarily think it is racist or not racist. It depends on how one defines racism. That is why I avoid the term.

  41. marinm

    I guess I’m asking the question now. There are many people that voted for him ONLY based on that criteria. Are they racist?

    If a person doesn’t vote for a white candidate on the basis of him (or her) being white what should we call that?

    1. marin, more than one person has left this blog because they didn’t like my position on calling someone a racist. I think that is a very serious charge to make at a person. My answer would be, that you would have to know what is in a person’s heart before you call him or her a racist.

      Let’s go back to the original question. It had to do with whether people weren’t going to vote for Obama because he is considered black (let’s set aside the bi racial concept for the sake of this discussion.) Of course there are people who won’t vote for him because he is black. There are people who WILL vote for him because he is black. There are people who vote along lines of race. Does that make them racists? I don’t know. I knew plenty of old white ladies when I was growing up who wouldn’t consider hiring a white house keeper. They would only hire black housekeepers. They were prejudiced against white house keepers I guess. Does that make them racist? I don’t know. Does it matter? No. All those old white ladies are dead and gone.

      I know white people (by name) who will not vote for Obama because of his race. I also know black people who would only come out to vote for him and no one else. JUST IS. Must we put a label on it? I am certainly not going to deny that these two types of people exist in that great pool of people we call voters.

  43. New York Times:

    King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia on Sunday granted women the right to vote and run in future municipal elections, the biggest change in a decade for women in a puritanical kingdom that practices strict separation of the sexes, including banning women from driving.

    I suppose the Arab Spring has brought this along since Saudi Arabia was the laughing stock of the middle east on how they treated women. Now they can vote but cannot drive? Perhaps they need to all go out and vote and make some changes in how they are treated, starting with hanging up some of the clergy.

  44. marinm

    @Moon-howler

    I think the entire race issue is trivialized. Some people will vote for or against a candidate based on the color of his/her skin. It could be white, it could be black. People are still going to vote for or against it just on that.

    They’ll also vote for or against a person based on gender.

    They’ll do the same if a candidate is short or tall. Skinny or fat.

    Pick something – anything – that makes the candidate different and you’ll find people that vote or don’t based on that one issue.

    But, somehow through all that. It’s only Republicans/TEA party that get it in the shorts because somehow all of them don’t want a black president.

    I don’t get it.

  45. Pat.Herve

    marin – it is because *some* of the Tea Partiers are arrogant enough to voice their racist side. Birthers – John McCain’s birth and citizenship is more cloudy than Obama’s.
    Obama is a Muslim – another ruse.

    When GOP leadership sends out emails such as – http://hotair.com/greenroom/archives/2011/04/16/obama-monkey-email-the-last-thing-the-gop-needed/ or flyers such as http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stories/PE_News_Local_S_buck16.3d67d4a.html – it does tend to tar brush the entire GOP – and label them as Racist.

    Many in the Tea Party are not grass roots activists, but paid, or lifetime, GOP operatives. They are not all racists, but the racist ones often times are not removed or shunned, they are left to tarnish the entire group.

  46. Pat.Herve

    What I find funny about the Cain plan –
    Where are the Constitutionalists that will say that a national sales tax is unconstitutional? It took the 16th amendment for the income tax to be legal.

    Where are the Tea Partiers pointing out the burden a sales tax will put on a company? They all thought 1099 reporting for any amount over $600 was a burden – what is the cost of accounting for every sale? 1099’ing, for many employers, is a tax avoidance scheme.

  47. @marinm

    Other folks have caught it over all sorts of things. Why are you singling out the tea party?

    That seems like victim mentality to me.

    People ought to just keep their mouth shut if they are voting for someone over reasons that might raise an eyebrow.

    The reason it is ever being discussed here is because pokie suggested that people didn’t not vote for someone because they were black. Elena and I begged to differ. We didn’t say anyone in particular and certainly didn’t target your sacred tea party as being those people. It was a very general remark.

  48. @Pat, I agree with you.

    However, Elena and I had both made general remarks and not pointed at any one person. Just that it happened.
