18 Thoughts to “Another Republican Debate…winners? losers?”

  1. Rick Bentley

I saw and enjoyed this clip – http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/mysterious-white-house-hole-14765254?tab=9482931&section=2808950&playlist=2808979

We used to argue here about whether use of the term “illegals” was dehumanizing. Note that Romney and Perry use it over and over.

  2. Rick Bentley

Sorry, wrong link! This is a good clip here, 4 mins of Romney putting Perry in his place. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/video/perry-blasts-romney-height-hypocrisy-14765881

  3. Rick Bentley

I haven’t been paying much attention, but enough to have these opinions :

Perry – absolute buffoon. Needs to go home and pray some more with his wife. Should not be elected to any post higher than dog catcher.

Cain – becoming very likeable, slightly Reaganesque at times. But his plans are insane and reckless – should go back to selling pizzas. Note that Cain looks his best when people like Cornel West and Harry Belafonte are slandering him – they do him a huge favor when they do so.

Romney – typical slick politician with no core beliefs, playing the usual games.

Gingrich – a meglomaniac who needs a lot of time on a therapist’s couch, but actually might be a decent President. He’s not beholden to anyone, except for his own ego.

  4. Rick Bentley

Cain should hire those guys from the New Black Panther Party to go around criticizing him in some colorful way. Kind of like the “Gays For Gore” approach in Al Franken’s fictional 1996 campaign (described in his excellent book “Why Not Me?”). In it, Franken’s campaign hires a group of transvestites and flamboyant leather-clad homosexuals to protest him as loudly as possible, claiming that Gore is the only Democratic candidate who will defend their right to make out in public, to expose schoolchildren to their nipple rings, etc. etc.

  5. Starryflights

What’s your obsession with gays and transvestites, Rick?

Why does no reporter confront Cain about his poor management of
Godfather’s Pizza? Why do they buy the myth that he created, that he
    turned the company around?

Herman Cain bases his campaign on the idea that he was a successful
CEO and manager at Godfather’s Pizza. No reporter has investigated
this claim. Cain has released no earnings statements either during the
time he was at Godfather’s Pizza or since.

If we look at sales figures which are in the public record, sales at
Godfather’s Pizza, adjusted for inflation dropped over 40% from the
year before he took over to his final years. It is hard to imagine
that profits went up at this time. Godfather’s Pizza fell from the 5th
largest Pizza chain when Cain took over to the 11th largest Pizza
chain by the time he left the company 15 years later. . .

    1983: $340 million . . .

2002: $287 million (560 stores) (sales per store 502,200)[xiv] Cain
steps down from Godfather’s Management Board

    2003: $304 million[xv]

    2004: $313 million

    Cain was a terrible CEO

Bachman did a good job of breaking out the “anchor-baby” terminology. That alone was worth the price of admission!

  8. Starryflights

Yeah, right, let me know when Bachman’s poll numbers reach 5 percent.

  9. That’s a pretty good find, Starry. Someone else is putting Cain out there. Cain, while far more likeable as a person, makes Sarah Palin look almost Phi Beta Kappa.

Furthermore, Cain is a no abortion under any circumstances, including rape and incest and life of the mother kinda person. He says there are other ways. Huh? I know 2 ways to end pregancy. Give birth or abortion (spontaneous or induced). Is there another way?

  10. “Illegals” is ignorant and just descending to the lowest common denominator. I was sorry to see Romney do this.

Anchor Baby is bigotted. So when do we descend just a little lower and go with vermin instead of anchor baby.

Doesn’t it just freaking gall you to know that some ‘anchor baby’ is just as American as you are? I love it that a school belongs to Yolanda Gomez just as much as it does Laura Roberts. Its always what I have found wonderful about my country.

  11. Rick Bentley

I don’t find palin all that unlikeable or stupid, Moon. And I think this analysis by her is interesting :

“Newt Gingrich would — he would clobber Barack Obama in any debate, any forum that had to do with substance when it comes to policy and solutions for the challenges that America faces. Newt Gingrich would clobber Barack Obama. I don’t know if he’s going to be the one that surfaces as the fortunate candidate who gets to face Barack Obama because unfortunately, in this day and age, sometimes conventional wisdom would dictate that he who has the most money, the campaign dollars, wins. I don’t want to believe that this is going to be the case this go-around,”

  12. I don’t like to call anyone stupid. But Palin is not known for having depth or breadth of knowledge. In fact, I don’t think she is stupid. I do think she is horribly unlikeable. I dislike her because she makes up excuses for her own personal behavior and the behavior of her children rather than just saying she was wrong, she misspoke, or her children should have behaved better. I like people who accept a little more personal accountability.

None of this has anything to do with her politics which I despise. I equally despise Bachmann’s politics but I don’t dislike her personally.

  13. So who walked away the winner of the debate? Did Cain hold his own? Did Romney remain presidential? Did Perry seem like he could stay in the race?

  14. SlowpokeRodriguez

Another missed opportunity was the gent who asked the question: “I’m a Latino….what are you gonna do for me?” My vote goes to the candidate who answers “Well, I’m an American, and I’m going to work to make the lives of Americans better.”

  15. SlowpokeRodriguez

I suppose Romney won the debate. Cain did alright, but I’m wondering if he’s peaked. Gingrichand Paul are performing nice and steady. Bachman and Santorum are just hanging on until Iowa. Perry……..he’s finished, but he has $50 million or more to burn through before he goes away. I was a little suprised to hear that when they asked people to give one word they associate with each candidate, Romney came back with “mormon”. I keep forgetting he’s a Mormon. Like Chris Matthews forgets that Obama is black.

    1. I forget Obama is black. Is there something wrong with that? Cartoons of him remind me. I think Massachusetts when I hear Romney.

Gingrich is probably the most qualified but everyone hates him and rightfully so. He is an egotistical blowhard womanizer. (hard to imagine)

Could you vote for Romney, Pokie? What would be the deal breaker?

  16. SlowpokeRodriguez

Starryflights :Yeah, right, let me know when Bachman’s poll numbers reach 5 percent.

Good comback! Not relevant to anything, really, but OK!

  17. Starryflights

Sorry, Charlie, but yelling “anchor baby” isn’t going to win Bachman the Republican nomination. You guys just don’t get it, do you?. Illegal immigration is not the first thing on the minds of most voters.

Aside from that, it was a great tactic.
