Given the recent debacles of rezonings within the 1 mile radius of the Town of Haymarket, it is crucial that the incoming Supervisor have a positive working relationship with the Mayor and Council Members of Haymarket.
I don’t know why Peter Candland did not show, but certainly, given his past record of being absent from the budget committee, his “no show” only reinforces the concerns that citizens have expressed regarding his dedication to the residents of Gainesville.
I see paper signs for Peter Candland, but where, where, is the actual person running and why has he missed such an important opportunity to meet his constituents?
Press Release from Ann Wheeler’s Campaign
Peter Candland Fails to Show Up For Haymarket Forum
Voters left questioning why candidate, Peter Candland, did not show up
HAYMARKET, October 20. Peter Candland did not show up for Haymarketʼs candidate
forum last night. Citizens concerned about local issues showed up to ask questions of
the candidates running to represent them weʼre not able to ask candidate Peter
Candland where he stood on local issues. Many were disappointed by him failing to
show up for the forum.Haymarketʼs Mayor, Pamela Stutz, hosted the event to give town residents an
opportunity to meet and listen to the candidates for office in the area. Residents asked
questions about traffic, new developments, and school funding. Discussion also focused
on ways the Board of County Supervisors could work with the town of Haymarket to
incorporate the townʼs strategic plan for growth with the countyʼs pace of development.
In an election where Peter Candlandʼs attendance record has been a big issue, many
questioned why he chose not to show up for this event. Peter Candland has a record of
missing two-thirds of Supervisor Stirrupʼs Gainesville District Budget
Committee Meetings of which he was a member .The other candidate for the
Gainesville District seat, Ann Wheeler, said:“I was sorry to see that my opponent, Peter Candland, did not show up for
the Haymarketʼs town forum last night. Town forums are a great way for
voters to meet and ask questions of elected officials and candidates
running for office. I welcomed the opportunity to meet with citizens of
Haymarket and enjoyed answering their questions about traffic,
development, and school funding. I truly believe it is a disservice to voters
and the community to not show up for forums such as these.”Ann Wheeler is currently running for the Gainesville District seat which is to be decided
in the November 8th election. She and her husband, John, live in Haymarket with their
two daughters. Ann has been on the Prince William County’s Board of Social Services
for six years and currently serves as its Chairman. She also serves on the Northern
Virginia Electric Cooperative Board. You can learn more about Ann and her campaign

How strange that Peter Candland didn’t show up. Did he send regrets? Maybe he is the imaginary candidate.
Who will make up excuses for him? Usually Jamie puts the spin on his shortcomings and libels someone else in the process.
Wow!! Are we sure he’s still in the race? Only a matter of life and limb would be acceptable for an excus.
I did notice that two his campaign workers were out in the hood earlier this week with Delegate Boob. They looked like they were trying to figure out where the “new” HOD 13th district started. 🙄
Maybe they have defected and gone over with Father Marshall.
Not showing up when he has a responsibility seems to be a life-style for Candland. I’ve spoken with people who know about that budget committee. They’re Republicans too so they’er not talking publicly and going against their own candidate. They confirm that he attended no meetings in 2010, maybe one this year, and did virtually no work. Saying he attended 2/3 of the meetings is being very generous to him. Maybe Stirrup told him to serve as an “advisor” or whatever, but he not follow up or do that in any way. If he keeps pushing this, lying, and taking credit for work other people did, I suspect public statements might be forthcoming.
I think the 2/3 of the meetings is a typo. It should read “did not attend 2/3 of the meetings”. I too have talked with Republicans about this and they are VERY disappointed that he is the candidate with the “R” by his name.
Candland strikes me as an empty suit with no substance, just political ambition.
He says he’s a community leader in his literature. Can anyone tell me a single issue on which he has been a leader for the community?
@Blue Moon
I just looked at his campaign website again. The only “leadership” I found was president of a homeowners association. OK, so he led efforts to nag people about mowing their grass and painting their window frames. I find no evidence of leadership or involvement in any community issues.
His issues page is a joke. He writes, “As a member of Supervisor John Stirrup’s Budget Committee over the last three years, I have intimate knowledge of the county budget . . . ” One Republican I spoke with reacted with revulsion to that lie.
@Theseus, I have heard that more than one of the people on that committee who put in all the work and elbow grease are pretty torqued that he is trying to claim credit for work he did not do.
I hope they will come forward and denounce him if he is claiming he did something he did not do. Shame of Mr. Stirrup if he is allowing a lie to be perpetuated. That isn’t fair to the people who rolled up their sleeves and put in the time.
I would gladly consider a response from anyone on that committee, anonymously or public.
Does anyone know? Didn’t Ann Wheeler and Martha Hendley both serve on that committee?
I want to know which is the truth regarding his “presidency” of the HOA. On his website it reads the following “Peter Candland, his wife Robyn, and their four children live in the Parks at Piedmont community in Gainesville, where Peter also serves as President of the Homeowners Association.” However, when he finally made it to the hood and came to my door, he said that he was no longer the president of the HOA. Yet the website, says just the opposite. I expressed concern with kids, full time job, and the HOA gig, as to how he was going to have to time be supervisor.
Hmm… Where’s “truth squad” when you need them? 👿
@Moon-howler
Moon, as I understand the Republican Committee they eat their own. I admit to having some Republican friends and being on speaking terms with some of them. No matter how bad one of their candidates might be (and they have produced some real s**theads for this election), any Republican criticizing them is forever persona non grata. Perhaps an inquisitive reporter calling some of these people and asking specifically what Candland’s accomplishments were (as opposed to general questions), and drawing conclusions from the lack of response, we might get somewhere.
It looks like Candland had some event at Heritage Hunt. Was that the same night as the Haymarket event?
Gated Community vs plain old Haymarket. Was this a fund raising issue? Did Candland just skip the Haymarket event? He needs to explain this omission.
@Theseus
Shoot, I would be the last person to be able to find out anything from the inner circle. I am not one of the chosen.
I am not even seen as being in the Gainesville District by the R party, since I live in the NO Man’s land of ‘in-town’ folks. I guess we are now on the wrong side of town.
I will let you know if lafayette or anyone hears anything. Meanwhile, I guess we are the new trash of the Gainesville District.
@Moon-howler
If he had another engagement his workers should be scheduling his appearances better. In addition they should respond if they are going to be “no shows” for such an event. You can’t be two places at once.
@Moon-howler
Shoot, is likely what they would do to me too. Again, reporters who might be interested in exposing campaign lies and doing some real investigation should take heed. Your job is not just writing about football games and flower shows.
I seriously doubt we’ll see double bookings for events in-town. I guess they think those of us the live in town should “white flight” to Gainesville & Haymarket to hear what these candidates have to say.
I believe there will be an event next week at the Four Seasons featuring the Gainesville District candidates.
@Theseus
I’m not sure we have any investigative reporters locally. It would be informative for the voters if the media would dig into these lies.
Hello, any reporters out there?
@Moon-howler
Weren’t the Republicans going ballistic when Gerry Connelly held meetings at Heritage Hunt behind the gates and restricted access? How come Candland gets a pass on that? Skip the forum in Haymarket that is open to the public, but hold a restricted access meeting in a gated community just like Connelly did? Seems we have some hypocrisy going on here.
@Theseus, exactly. Yes. I guess its ok when Republicans do it. Not so good when anyone else does it.
Candland needs to come up up to Haymarket where all of us riff raff can come hear him.
Back when the dominion power line was set to decimate Dominion Valley, Piedemont became involved. I don’t remember Peter Candland, so if he was HOA president, not sure what that means as a prerequisite to be Supervisor. He never engaged the broader “community” when Piedemont was faced with an issue like a huge power line coming near its neighborhood.
Where is Peter Candland? I would look in one of Stirrup’s outbuildings where he may be hiding with the suddenly invisible Gainesville Supervisor. If you don’t find him there, try Wally’s basement.
@Moon-howler Post #9
Moon, I just made a couple of calls. Ann Wheeler was on the Stirrup budget committee prior to the time Candland claims he served on it. I gather from what I heard that she attended the meetings and did a significant amount of work while there. I have not been able to verify yet if Martha Hendley was or was not on the committee. Maybe if Martha is reading she can verify.
Theseus,
I gather Martha doesn’t read the blogs. I spoke to her about it before and she as much said so. Although there are a lot of people who say they don’t and do, I get the feeling she really doesn’t.
@Alanna
I agree with you completely. She’s the about the ONLY one I believe when they say that don’t read and/or comment on the blogs.
Maybe she should start reading the blogs.. it helps knowing where the knife is going to get you sometimes.
Reference my post number 6. Candland has since this morning edited “intimate knowledge of the budget” off his website. Hey Pete, don’t worry, we’ve saved all versions of your website, so you’re not fooling anyone.
We need another edit, Pete – maybe you can take care of this tonight? You still claim to have served on Stirrup’s budget committee for three years, even though the email documentation from Stirrup’s office proves you didn’t attend a single meeting in 2010, and virtually none this year.
Remember that it wasn’t the dirty deed that got Nixon. It was the lies and cover-ups that came later.
I understand that Ann Wheeler’s signs have been stolen from Heritage Hunt AGAIN.
GEEZ…come on guys. Stop the sign stealing.
Jamie the pit bull….stop lying for your master.
Ouch Theseus, that one had to hurt! people who are confident don’t NEED to spin reality.
Tis the season Moon. I remember some time back when people were caught ripping up signs on my property and replacing it with their own!
Wasn’t one of those people seeking office in PWC?
Is Jamie going to get jealous of Greg for his efforts to skewer Ann Wheeler.
I had no idea Ann was such an influential person. All by herself on the board of directors!
Greg who never provides documentation for his grand pronouncements, talks like Ann is totally responsible for all decisions made by NOVEC and who will be voting on the tax rates alone, should she be elected.
I would like to see some facts and figures to back up his allegations rather than his unsubstantiated “facts” for the minions to buy in to.
I think I would rather pay the highest rates for electricity in Virginia, even if it is true, and have my power on. Look at all those poor people in Maryland and Richmond who went for weeks without power recently. Some of us might have gone for hours, not days. I never lost mine.
Kudos for NOVEC.
NOVEC does a good job at restoring power in our neighborhood too.
If you look at their Board of Directors, you’ll find it has only two women and no minorities. It could be more representative of the state’s population. I suppose Greg would prefer an all-male board. He does have a habit of going after female candidates.
You would be correct moon!
Was that office seeker’s name clearly on his license plate? @Elena
he was only President of the HOA for a short period of time, but that HOA has some financial issues which went undiscovered for quite some time – I think it was the management companies fault, but if Candland was the on the board, and he should have known about the issues sooner.
This is the first I have heard of that. Are there more details?
yes mam, there was a name on the license plate!
@Elena
Is that person with name on license plate on back of truck who took down signs you had up on your property still in office?
Well, Candland’s absence is not surprising. He assumes he is the best candidate, but hopefully people will see behind this facade. He is clueless and as the election draws near, his true colors are showing. Let’s hope he forgets to show up at the polls. Actually, he is a pretty forgettable person.
