Whoooooooo Whoooooooo Whoooooooo Whoooooooo Whoooooooo
Today is Halloween and all the spooks and goblins will be out in full force tonight, when the veil is the thinnest.
Does everyone have enough candy? Should you get your house egged if you hand out raisins and dried fruit?
BOO!

@Big Dog,
I’m with you on that one. I am scared to look.
@Big Dog
We’re off the lows of earlier today. I actually did some buying this morning – waited for the inevitable retrenchment from Thursday’s rally. As long as we keep going a little more forward than backward through the ups and downs, I’m happy.
Got my broom oiled and ready on the flight deck. Witch out you guys!
The Gore Effect – Snow whenever he speaks about global warming. It also happened in Copenhagen during their global warming conference.
Hey, guess what! It happened again.

Careful with that, I’m seeing bounce attempts getting killed and it looks like this thing wants to roll lower. I’m holding off on new long exposure until I see a successful test of the 1225 area on the S&P.
Having said that, put PEET, PIR, BKE and DSW on your radar for pullback buys.
@Cargosquid
Speaking of global warming, that Commie left-wing rag, the Washington Post, had an interesting article on how research into global warming verified that it was indeed happening – and the research had been backed by the Koch brothers. What are the deniers to do…
Need to leave the link…

Yep. Saw that. Muller says that the earth is warming. Does NOT ascribe it to AGW. Its possible that it is….and has been since the Little Ice Age.
However, the co-author says that the piece has been corrupted and is distancing herself from it.

WSJ article today predicts a decent market through the first of the year.
November and December, throughout history, have been positive months-
on average.
Also noted “sell in May and go away” (and buy back in in late September)
is good advice most years, including 2011.
Market went down 15% during the summer, but rebounded 12% in October.
Alas, still more tricks than treats for us common folk.
Did any Manassas folks (county and city) happen to catch this little letter to the editor by Councilman Way? This smack of more city elitism we’ve seen time and time again. Perhaps someone from the county will write a letter in reply to “misplaced” blame. hahaha..there’s plenty of that to go around. I know one regular on this blog shares Mr. Way’s thoughts on the matter.
http://www2.insidenova.com/news/2011/oct/27/letter-editor-misplaced-blame-manassas-ar-1415266/
Mr. Way, that knife cuts both ways, sir. Those of us in PWC that live in Manasas don’t like being tarred either by incidents in GTS and POW. It’s ashame that there’s confussion with the jurisdictions. However, I think most that live in the area know the difference. It is the Greater Manassas Area, afterall. GMA needs to make a come back. However, some in the city don’t seem to like the fact that they are situated in PWC.
@Laf,
As long as the PO gives me a Manassas address, then I am from Manassas.
I grew up in Charlottesville proper as a little kid. When I was a teenager I lived in Albemarle County. However, I had a Charlottesville, address and I was as much from Charlottesville then as I was a little kid. That’s just the way it works in Virginia. I never remember people being picky. In fact, the Charlottesville people liked the Albemarle association since it was one of the richest counties in the United States.
@Big Dog
I am hoping that was just a sell off from last week. May tomorrow be better.
Have yet to read an article about a crime in GTS being identified as in
“Prince William County”, but ones in Coverstone, as a regular example,
are always labeled “Manassas”. Wish it did cut both ways Lafayette.
It isn’t elitism, it is a request for fair and accurate reporting.
http://wtop.com/?nid=41&sid=2614725
This sick GOP BS is disgusting.
@Big Dog
It does cut both ways, sir. The fact is it is Manassas! I’ve had plenty of people tell me to get out of Dodge after reading GTS or other city hood stories. Now, these are people that are from Manassas that no longer live here. Remember there’s even a little sliver of Manassas in the county that even posesses the same zip as the city 20110. I bet you city folks don’t like that one either.
The word Manassas is not “owned” exclusively by the city. Manassas is a city and an area of the county that’s the fact. Perhaps, the city might not get confused with the county so much if it truly were a city and depend on the county for shared services, which the city pays.
How can you deny the county having Manassas in it? The battlefield and the hospitals were here in what’s now the county, and the city had the train during the Civil War.
The bottom line is the Post Office delivers mail to my house in PWC with a Manassas address. I don’t know of a soul that doesn’t say they are from where their mail is delivered.
Ahh, the good ole days 22110!!
The blog True Conservative has more info on the GOP sense of
humor – a drawing of President Obama shot in the head.
Laughing yet?
@Lafayette
About Shared Services: not really an issue with the City of Manassas and the greater Manassas Area as Shared Services are a standard operation thing across many places. In the Army, we called them “Installation Support Agreements”. Managed quite a few of those both as the garrison providing the services, and also as a tenant receiving the services. I jokingly called these agreements “landord edicts” once since they contained so many rules.
But locally, the Shared Services is an interesting beast – especially when it comes to water since back in ’75, the City took the lake with them. The Airport also came with the City as the County did not see much economic viablity in it (sorta kinda short sighted there). Sometimes, as in the case of Area Agencies on Aging, they get based with whoever has the highest per capitia amount of ages 60+ as in our case locally with the Prince William Area Agency on Aging – heaquartered in the County offices, but serves all in the County and two Cities. But, the whole name game will probably out live us all…LOL!
@Censored bybvbl
By the way…if the report IS correct…..what’s causing it? He did not address the causes. So, if its not AGW, it must be something else.
So, by that token….we can’t do anything about it.
And here’s the same data saying that its not warming NOW.

@Cargosquid
It isn’t consistent. I don’t know what to tell you.
@Moon-howler
I’m with you on this Moon. I live almost 10 miles outside the city limits of “Manassas”, yet my address is “Manassas, VA 20112”. I always thought Hoadly Road was the dividing line between “Manassas” and Dale City but that is not necessarily the case. There are some areas outside Dale City (sort of southj) that are “Manassas”. Lafayette, you’re just gonna have to get over it.
@George S. Harris
Why do I need to get over it? I’m in the same boat as Moon. My problem is with the elitist attitude of some in the city and their not liking the fact that me, you and Moon all have Manassas addresses. Furthermore, I’ve been here longer than anyone else on this blog, including Moon. My family has been in Manassas since the late 1930’s. They lived in the city of Manassas, as did my my parents until I a month before I was born. I was born in Prince William Hospital in what was then the town of Manassas. If I can’t say I’m from Manassas, I’d like to just where in the hell I’m supposed to be from. Councilman Way and Big Dog are the one that need to get over it. There’s a lot more to Manassas than the city limits.
@Lafayette
Perhaps I misunderstood your original post. It is sometimes hard to tell where the city begins and ends and the same for the county. All the “towns” or “cities” are a part of Prince William County. If people ask me where I am from, I say, “Manassas, VA”. I may clarify that by saying I don’t live in the city, I live in the county, but I consider myself to be from Manassas. So I think you’re correct–tell Mr. Way and Big Dog to stuff it. Whether something happens in Gainsesville, Manassas, Manassas Park, Woodbridge, Dumfries, Quantico or Triangle–they all happen in Prince William County.
Yup, Lafayette has been here about 8-9 months longer than I have. We calculated it down to the month!!! December to August. We won’t include the year. We are ladies. We don’t have to tell!!!
It happens all over the place. Look at Haymarket – you can be from the small quaint town, or the outer edges. Look at New York City – ask someone from there where they are from, and they will say Queens (which is a county), a part of NYC, Brooklyn (which is a borough, Kings county), a part of NYC, and Manhattan (Manhattan Island, New York County) – also a part of NYC.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/the-debt-fallout-how-social-security-went-cash-negative-earlier-than-expected/2011/10/27/gIQACm1QTM_story.html
Remember the thing we had about Social Security. Well here it is again. One of the easiest to fix, stop reducing the deduction and remove the $106,800 ceiling. Would take care of SS for a bunch of years. Also, note in the article all of the things that have been tacked on to Social Security since 1935. No wonder Social Security is a “burden”–WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND THEY ARE US.
@George S. Harris
I thought you did. These has been a pet peeve of mine for decades now. They can say they want accurate reporting. Well, so do I. The local paper has gotten a lot better about calling us the Manassas area, but they do not say PW, and they should NOT have too. However, their comments smack of elitism with things like this. And to say the knife does NOT cut both ways is simply a LIE.
@Moon-howler
No years will be unleashed. 😉
@Cargosquid
Hey Cargo–you might want to take a look at this: http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20111101/US.SCI.Climate.Extremes/?cid=hero_media
We have much to learn about global warming but to think that freaky weather isn’t a part of it–well…
Mr. Harris,
Manassas and Manassas Park are independent cities and not legally
part of Prince William County (unlike towns like Haymarket).
If you pay taxes to PWC and vote in PWC, you officially live in PWC,
no matter what zip code the USPS happened to, for their needs, placed your
address. But if you want to say you live in Manassas – great.
The issue is lazy hurtful “reporting” that continues to identify every criminal
event that happens in western Prince William County as “Manassas”.
As Councilmember Way notes, we certainly have our own issues. All the more
reason not to accept being tagged with crimes outside our jurisdiction.
For example this morning’s N&M “Police Briefs” has a story about a
Mr. Cedillos accused of a crime and identifies him as a “Manassas man”
even though his address is on Irongate Way, clearly PWC, and the police report is
provided by the PWC PD. “Prince William man” would have been the right I.D.
in that story.
Woe to ye old 401K owners this morning. Greece is holding a surprise referendum to tell the bankers just where to stick their bailout (and austerity measures). Markets in Europe down anywhere from 3.5 to 7%. Futures indicate a 3% open lower here in the U.S.
Hate to say I told you so, but…
@Big Dog
The articles indicate jurisdiction 99% of the time in the body of the article when they say which police department was involved. They all go to the same shared jail though. 🙂
@Cato the Elder
No, you don’t hate it at all. You love rubbing it in.
Has Fox News gone off the air or is it only on my TV? Have I been extra good lately?
On the City of Manassas–
Many of us ignore the boundaries. We shop in the city, dine in the city, and visit in the city.
I guess I don’t like it being pointed out that I really don’t belong. That is what Mr. Way’s letter implies. We are a community. I lived over on Nichol Lane probably before Mr. Way ever came to Manassas. Now I live in the county. I think I might just have to keep my money on this side of the county line if I read much more about city being city and county being county…translation, I don’t really fit because I don’t pay taxes there.
I pay your meals tax and your sales tax. I can make that stop.
@Moon-howler
GASP. How dare you suggest that I profit from the misery of others! You wound me, Ms. Howler.
On another note, notice where it popped back up to after the opening dip? Umm hmmm, that 1225 area. If it holds up there I think the market is telling us something. When you’re playing in a rigged casino, it’s helpful if you understand how it’s rigged against the average jane and joe so you can play along.
@George S. Harris
Yep. Just add it to the list of things caused by global warming.
http://www.numberwatch.co.uk/warmlist.htm
Funny how snow was supposed to be a rare thing in England. And hurricanes were supposed to increase.
If global warming is causing this, it would be nice to see actual proof, instead of theory…..
Heck, I’d like to see incontrovertible proof of global warming, much less AGW.
I guess the science isn’t settled. We should investigate it some more.
M-H,
What I would like to see stopped is almost every crime in western
PWC being date-lined Manassas. If it is not noted and complained about,
it will never change. I’ve gotten some local reporters to at least write
“near Manassas” – that is a start.
Greece — GRRRR!
@Big Dog
Heck…let’s get them to say, “Near DC.”
@Big Dog,
My problem is this, my post office city is Manassas. I feel very much as though I live in Manassas. Mr. Ways letter to the editor is very excluding. I guess maybe I just don’t belong anywhere.
Mr. Way excludes us from Manassas and Mr. Candland excludes us from Haymarket and Gainesville and doesn’t acknowledge our existence in the Gainesville Magisterial District.
We all should have a strong sense of community, regardless of boundaries.
Okay, time for my pitch for the 5th Annual City of Manassas Neighborhood Conference on Sat., Nov. 19 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Manassas Boys & Girls Club, 9501 Dean Park Lane. Register for morning and afternoon workshops (code enforcement is one). Housing counselors will be available (pre-register). Register youth, ages 5 to 18, for Youth Café (choices include a game show, sports challenge, social hour and more). Applications for sponsors and exhibitors are still being taken for the exhibit hall, but space is limited. Admission is free, but donations of supplies are being collected for City Animal Shelter: paper towels, disinfectant wipes, dog/cat food, kitty litter or large trash bags. Register by calling Christen Zenich at 703-257-8315 or register online at http://www.manassascity.org/neighconf.
The county also does a neighborhood conference in February; I’ve seen people cross jurisdictions to attend one or both conferences (I’m one of them).
I’m all for one Manassas that has clean, safe neighborhoods no matter where the lines are drawn.
I think the bad will that comes from Mr. Way’s letter gives the city more of a black eye than a miscommunication on crime.
I believe all of us who are county in town people feel insulted after reading his letter.
We all have some problematic neighborhoods.
