Members of Congress-not such a safe job any more

Two more congressmen have had violent threats made against them.  Two weeks ago Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Ill was specifically named in an Internet threat that  called for the assassination of a number of public officials.  The threat offered a $75,000 reward and, according to ABC News stated:

“I will pay $75,000 for ASSASSINATING Illinois Congresswoman (sic) Bobby Schilling and any US Congressman, US Senator and FBI, CIA and NSA DIRECTORS and their FAMILY MEMBERS regardless of their age.”

Yesterday,  Glendon Swift of Tennessee left two voice messages on the phone at Rep. Eric Cantor’s  Glen  Allen, VA office.  The threats contained yelling, screaming and cursing in addition to threatening to rape Cantor’s daughter and kill his wife.  Capital police were contacted and Swift is now sitting out his temper tantrum in jail.

Swift was charged by criminal complaint of threatening to assault or murder a member of the immediate family of a United States official, according to the FBI. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. Swift made his initial appearance before a U.S. magistrate judge in Knoxville, Tenn., earlier this afternoon.

Rep. Gabby Giffords was shot along with others in an execution style slaying last January by a mentally unstable individual.  Rep. Giffords survived but others did not, including her aide and a federal judge.

What is wrong with people?  Why have members of Congress become the new targets?   I know their approval rating is low but I don’t think anyone advocates doing bodily harm to any one of them.  Are those making threats just mentally unbalanced?

While we grouse and grumble about their pay and their perks, we may end up having to provide security for all of them.  Threats like these cannot be ignored.  Perhaps we are fortunate that threats were made.  Gabby Giffords got none other than a bullet in the brain.

The Capitol Police  and FBI are to be commended for bringing Swift in to custody this quickly.   A strong message needs to be sent that the American people will not tolerate this kind of behavior and violence directed towards elected or public employees.   Threats will not be tolerated.

Corey Stewart: The Developers Candidate

Does everyone remember this statement from Corey, Washington Post Oct 19th?

Stewart said that developers were pleased with the direction the board has taken as a whole in easing permit restrictions, building roads and other key infrastructure and keeping taxes low.

He said that he has never taken donations from developers while they have a project pending before the board.

I’ll bet “developers are pleased with the direction of the board!”  Does Avendale ring any bells?!

Tell me, please, why do people spin the truth when the facts can so clearly create obvious contradictions.  From today’s Inside Nova:

On Oct. 7, Bruni Peters of Fairfax-based RK Realty contributed $10,000 to Stewart – just 11 days before Stewart and the rest of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors unanimously approved a comprehensive land use amendment and a re-zoning of one of Bruni’s future mixed-use properties.

At issue is the Hunter at Haymarket development. Thanks to the board’s vote, a six-acre portion of a 44-acre parcel of land off U.S. 15 was approved for office space. The board also approved a higher density residential zoning for nearly 10 of 15 acres that were originally designated semi-rural residential.

The Herman Cain controversy goes on

Mark “Smokin’ Man” Block accused the Rick Perry campaign of leaking the sexual harassment story to Politico. He also blames Politico for using anonymous sources.  He says both the campaign and Politico owe Herman Cain and his family an apology.

It seems to me that the story is old. There are 2 women who filed sexual harassment charges. Period.

A third woman has stepped forward who did not file charges but who felt like she was uncomfortable. Now any woman coming forward at this late date is just setting herself up for misery. She will be hounded by the press and some campaign will attempt to paint her as tramp of the century.

There is a lot of back-tracking and spin going on. I don’t believe the story is important. The handling of the problem is what is going to make or break Herman Cain. Yesterday it appeared he was on edge.

Ann Coulter herself has said the race card is being played. Herman Cain has been quoted as saying that this is coming up now because of the fact that he is black. Cain is no different than any other candidate who is out there and leading in the polls. If anyone sniffs out a weakness, the oppositional research will be all over it. Harry Truman needs to have a private word with Herman Cain: If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I am more concerned over Cain’s knowledge base than I am his woman problem. Many a good president has had women problems–including those we don’t know about.
