Don’t get me started on no-knock warrants. This is one instance where I agree with Starry. God forgive me.

To see some gross incidents one only has to go to Youtube and do searches for ‘swat raid gone bad’ or ‘swat shoots dog’. My appologies to Moon if she actually watches some of those videos.

The Richmond TP story has got some legs! Point out that the government is treating citizens unequally and you win yourself a tax audit. Brilliant.

Barney Frank is going. I think the Congress will be better off without him. Herman Cain continues to amuse me. I think the late night talk shows WANT him to get elected just because of all the material they could have for 4 years.

With the vast number of phone calls I’ve had to make recently for doctors appointments I’ve noticed one alarming thing.

If I call to make an appointment as a male for a child I’m always asked if my last name is the same as the childs. It’s sad that we live in a society where that question needs to be asked.

I’m not a social conservative but man have we let things go down hill where that’s a standard question on a receptionist’s script.

    It just makes me sad.

    @marinm

The name inquiry doesn’t necessarily allude to the status of the American family – as in it’s going down hill. Of my four siblings, three of us have kept our maiden name. One sib’s kiddos have their father’s last name. Two siblings’ kiddos have their fathers’ (divorced from my sisters) last names. Some of my friends children have hyphenated names. Better to inquire than just guess. It shortens the time needed to find the proper records.

    Barney Frank is going.

Guess that means his seat is wide open, huh?

    @Cato the Elder

    Nice double entendre. Loved it.

Censored, good point. I guess it just irked me off for a moment that men act like boys and don’t take responsibility for their actions.

    Now this should be interesting:

Judge Blocks Citigroup Settlement With S.E.C.
    By EDWARD WYATT
    Published: November 28, 2011

WASHINGTON — Taking a broad swipe at the Securities and Exchange Commission’s practice of allowing companies to settle cases without admitting that they had done anything wrong, a federal judge on Monday rejected a $285 million settlement between Citigroup and the agency.

The judge, Jed S. Rakoff of United States District Court in Manhattan, said that he could not determine whether the agency’s settlement with Citigroup was “fair, reasonable, adequate and in the public interest,” as required by law, because the agency had claimed, but had not proved, that Citigroup committed fraud.

As it has in recent cases involving Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, UBS and others, the agency proposed to settle the case by levying a fine on Citigroup and allowing it to neither admit nor deny the agency’s findings. Such settlements require approval by a federal judge.

While other judges are not obligated to follow Judge Rakoff’s opinion, the 15-page ruling could severely undermine the agency’s enforcement efforts if it eventually blocks the agency from settling cases in which the defendant does not admit the charges.

The agency contends that it must settle most of the cases it brings because it does not have the money or the staff to battle deep-pocketed Wall Street firms in court. Wall Street firms will rarely admit wrongdoing, the agency says, because that can be used against them in investor lawsuits.

The agency in particular, Judge Rakoff argued, “has a duty, inherent in its statutory mission, to see that the truth emerges.”

  7. That new and improved BOCS sound system….you gotta love it.

Why didn’t they send it back when they first realized it didn’t work?

Black screen here. Occassionally sound comes through.

    RE: BOCS Meeting

  8. @marinm

That part irks me too. I was glad to see that PWC now plays its toad list for those wanted for past due child support. I think it should be everyone, not just the top offenders.

    The men AND women.

  9. Lafayette

Classic BoS meeting. NO sound or picture today. Gotta love that new sound system. The cracklin’ when cell phones rang or had messages was better than this.

  10. Why not take 100k and buy an even better sound system…you know, one where you can hear what the people are saying. A little transparency here would be nice. We have missed pretty much all of citizens time.

  11. Mom

Well my sound and video work just fine, too damn fine. Unfunded CIP requirements for both the FD and PD dating back to 1994. And Wally wants to give $100 grand to the horsey people.

  12. Who is your provider, Mom?

I am listening to one of our local horse’s behinds say we don’t have a revenue problem we have a spending problem. Well doh….and who do they think is doing it?

If all the financial stuff from the trigger cuts trickles down hill, they might find themselves out on a limb. Less from the state for medicare, public safety, medicaid and education might make whichever horse’s A rethink that statement.

Unless of course, PWC will print its own money. We do have Bob Marshall living right here. Perhaps he could help.

  13. @MoM, that goes back to promises made to fix the problem after Kyle Wilson was killed, doesn’t it?

I remember all sorts of promises being made. They got pushed aside when the immigration resolution came along and they were all willing to spend big bucks to fix that. The image of Kyle Wilson sure faded fast.

  14. Mom

Actually a lot of it pre-dates that. One of the largest problems facing the PD and FD is staff to population ratios. We have the worst ratio in the region (perhaps the state) and its not getting any better. As a result, officers and resources are concentrated east of the 234 bypass and everything west is often covered by only one or two officers from the Loudoun to the Fauquier line. It’s also why that area of the county always complains about an average 45 minute response time for PD calls.

  15. @Mom, you are just triggering pet peeves with me. You mentioned the 234 bypass. Where the hell is that now? This county still doesn’t have its major east west roads recognized on all GPS navigators. The roads are named different things and called different things depending on who you talk to. I don’t care if they name one of the roads Corey Stewart Highway, just name the damn things something recognizable and mark them.

I speak of the 234 bypass, the connector to Prince William Parkway aka Kathleen Seefelt highway, Dumfries Road and route 234.

Dear God, how does fire and rescue find anyone who has been in a wreck? I had a friend who was in a wreck and it took the cops a half hour to find her because she said she was on PW Parkway.

As to ratios, the PD was making huge improvements in this area until staff started being redistributed for Rule of Law. Rule of Law. (best shriek)

I don’t think F&R had a chance. No one seems to care unless their house is on fire or they are getting scraped up off the highway. That is so complicated with all the paid/volunteer/part of county/not part of county I have just given up trying to understand.

  16. Ray Beverage

BOCS Session today and pic/sound streamed in fine to my computer via Verizon Fios.

Moon, only thing about Citizens Time was the string of folks about Holly Ridge, to include the owner’s lawyer, and then Chairman’s counterpoints afterwards. Seemed he kept glancing down to a paper in front of him leading me to think he came prepared and then had a reason to say why no chance stopping further action is going to happen after listening to all the folks. Little disappointed nobody showed up to just take a dig at Covington though…but then, only rabble like me do that even once retraction is done…LOL!

    1. I think it is some sort of flaw with the signal to fios in the county, Ray. Chris and I both had the same problem. Elena is on satellite and she could hear hers.

I lost some sympathy for Wally when he tried to blame Frank and then said he still didn’t see a conflict of interest because neither of them profitted from the organization. Conflict of interest goes way beyond reaping finacial gain.

  17. Ray Beverage

    @Moon-howler

I personally had a good laugh over not wanting to make it a political issue with a nonprofit involved. Oh, the list that could be generated of how several of the nonprofits doing outstanding works are so entrenched, other nonprofits stand no chance.

    1. @Ray
I think that might be what needs to change. Too many non profits are being excluded. Monopoly begins at home…..the new board game for PWC.

  18. Mom

How’s this for a start to the entrenched list:
Action in Community Through service (ACTS)
    Arc of Greater Prince William
    Azalea Charities
    Barg Homeless Shelter
    CASA
    Catholics for Housing
    Hylton Center
    Manassas Community Chorale
    Marine Corps Heritage Foundation
    Nokesville Horse Society
    Project Mend a House
    PW Clean Community
    Ruritan Club
    Steak n Steak Dinner
    Transitional Housing BARN

    1. How much does each entrenched get per year?

How many times is the Hylton Center going to grab us? That sure is the gift that keeps taking, isn’t it.?

    2. I would love to see the justification for some of these.

Catholics for housing? The church is sitting on a wad of money. Why aren’t they paying for housing?

marine heritage foundation? what does this do?

Project mend a house–that sounds reasonable.

Nokesville Horse society? why? why are we taxpayers supporting horses? Can I take my grandkids to go ride them?

Assateague ponies are one thing. Nokesville horses are another.

  19. Mom

Ok, lets take this a step further, yesterday Wally donated $5,000 of Brentsville funds to sponsor the Leahy Family Christmas Concert at the Hylton Center. If you pull the event up on Hylton’s website, it reads:

“This Leahy Family Christmas performance is Sponsored by Supervisor Wally Covington.”

Well pardon the hell out of me but shouldn’t it read sponsored by the taxpayers of Prince William County.

    1. Indeed it should. Can we demand that be changed or insist that he write a private check for the sponsorship?

  20. Big Dog

    http://www.roanoke.com/editorials/wb/301743

Virginia Republicans should be careful what they wish for — a sudden,
massive reduction in Federal spending will hammer us.

    1. Big Dog is growling right!

The problem will be impacted because local jurisdictions cannot print their own money. If the state rvenues dry up, then we will be forced to raise taxes…a lot.

  21. Big Dog

“U.S. exports of gasoline, diesel and other oil-based fuels are soaring,
putting the nation on track to be a net exporter of petroleum products
in 2011 for the first time in 62 years.” WSJ (11-30-2011)

Interesting — I had no idea this was the case.

  22. Mom

Here are some totals for last year:

Action in Community through service $1,450.00
Arc of Greater Prince William $1,250.00
    Azalea Charities $1,250.00
    Barg Homeless Shelter $250.00
    CASA $5,000.00
    Catholics for Housing $500.00
    Hylton Center $15,000.00
    Manassas Community Chorale $700.00
    Marine Corps Heritage Foundation $1,400.00
    Nokesville Business Assoc. $500.00
    Nokesville Horse Society $400.00
    Project Mend a House $3,000.00
    PW Clean Community $950.00
    Rainbow Center $11,000.00
    Ruritan Club $1,500.00
    Steak n Steak Dinner $5,000.00
    Transitional Housing BARN $500.00

    1. I can live with the small amounts. Catholics for housing, $500.00. That barely buys a box of nails these days. However, there are a couple heavy hitters in the group. What is that I see that stands out above all the rest of the organizations?

I am still curious why are we sponsoring a horse society? There might be a perfectly good reason that I haven’t thought of. Are these the horses the mounted police use? If yes, then I am all in favor of that amount of money being spent and I would gladly approve more. I fully support the mounted police in Prince William County. Bet ya that isn’t it though, is it?

  23. Cargosquid

    @Big Dog
Now…if we can just find some more crude………maybe if we go look in Alaska…..

    And North Dakota…..

Net exporter…I like the sound of that.

  24. Cindy B

A new hyperlocal news site springing up in Bristow:
    http://bristowbeat.com/?cat=3

  25. Very good. Whoever thought that Bristow would be its own ‘city?’

    Thanks Cindy.

    M-H,

Can handle cooler weather as long as there is a warm stock market.

    Up 4% – a very good day.

    1. @Big Dog

Double Ruff! What a great day for the bulls. Go bulls Go! Gore those bears.

I liked the cool weather even.

  27. punchak

    @Cargosquid
    Export?!?!

I thought we’ve tried, and ARE trying, to become selfsufficient when it comes to
petroleum products. Sounds not correct – to me anyway.

How come we’re importing oil if we have enough to export?

  28. Cargosquid

We’re not exporting Crude, apparently. We are net exporters of the byproducts of crude…processed crude.

    I think.

Either way…we need more. Net exporter on everything sounds good…think about it. Exporter of food AND energy.

When did we surrender the land of the free and the home of the brave and become the land of the constrained the timid? Did al Qaeda win?

No kidding. I was listening to some wag praising the Senate for acting in a bi-partisan manner on the issue. I guess pissing on civil liberties is something Rs and Ds can agree on.

  32. Morris Davis

    @Cato the Elder

    Cato,

Ben Franklin was right: “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

  33. Morris Davis

In October 2002, five months before we launched our invasion of Iraq, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld made a list of some things that could potentially go wrong. It looks like Rumsfeld pretty much nailed it.

    http://library.rumsfeld.com/doclib/sp/310/Re%20Parade%20of%20Horribles%2010-15-2002.pdf#search=%22parade%20of%20horribles%22

    1. @Moe

      Bet he didn’t admit it.

  34. marinm

    Mo, was that doc declassified?

  35. Morris Davis

    @marinm

    Marin,

I assume it was properly declassified. It is available on Rumsfeld’s website in a batch of papers he posted when he published his memoir.

    http://www.rumsfeld.com/

  36. marinm

I panicked when I saw the document and thought I’d have to call in the MiB to wipe my hard drive and brain.

  37. @Second Alamo
Do you say that when our white rednecks or blacks do the same thing or do you just notice when people with Hispanic surnames break the law? Is it worse when Latinos do it than when homegrowns do it? Is the problem that Hispanics broke the law or that the law was broken?

I don’t know about you but I am against everyone being drug smugglers.
