The blog has gone to the dogs. But we knew that. Is everyone ready for the big day? There are lots of big days coming up. Winter Solstice is right around the corner as are the 8 days of Hanukkah. Christmas is next Sunday.
These dogs are in a festive mood. Did I leave off any holidays for our dogs to celebrate?
Remember that awful barking Jingle Bells?
Where is the best Christmas display in the area?
1 billion hungry in the world. www.heiffer.org a sustainable gift to fight hunger.
The Foxies were off to a fine start a while ago. They had on some reps from Heiffer.org along with some animal displays. They had ducks, goats and rabbits and told how each gift of animals helped poor people. They also spelled out that the animals weren’t eaten and that they were used for milk and their off spring.
As they panned over to the rabbits…3 guesses what was happening in the bunny pen….You naughty foxies!
Cute dogs. I’ve been toying with the idea of a corgi.
Corgis can be nuts. My brother and the queen have them. I like them though. Check to see how good they are around kids. My brother’s first one would take an arm off. they had no kids.
I love corgis though and thought about getting one myself.

I have not really been inclined to support Newt. But with all the high-profile endorsements of Romney from establishment Republicans and criticism of Newt from the pundits and media (Jon Stewart), I find myself sympathizing with Newt and looking to give him a second look.
Marin – We’ve had a corgi mix for 8 years. Cute dog with a lot of personality. The drawback is they shed like no other dog that I’ve ever seen. We keep 6-8 lint brushes around the house to get the corgi hair off our clothes and vacuum a couple of times a week and collect a full canister of hair. A corgi is a hair-making machine.
@Cato the Elder
Agreed, Cato. That was one of the funniest skits I have seen on there for a long time.
@Kelly, that is what we girls call a mercy…vote. Geez.
Morris, thanks. We got the animal hair Dyson but I would not be looking forward to using it even more. I think we’ll wait on a dog for awhile.
Thanks,
Let’s talk vacuums, marin. Do you like the animal hair vac and what is differnt about it from a regular dyson? I have the smaller one…its a little lighter to push. Is yours the cannister or upright?
A puppy is a lot of trouble and is your yard fenced?
@Moon-howler
If (and it’s a ‘big if’ at this point) I were to vote for him, it would not be a mercy vote. After hearing Bob Dole endorse Romney, I realized that Newt may be just what is needed to shake up the status quo. Anyone that unites establishment Republicans and Liberals against him cannot be all bad.
Newt on Bob Schieffer’s show this morning was insufferable.
His preaching and lecturing was beyond belief. Total turn-off!
What did he lecture and preach about? Was he strutting that condescending attitude again? re Newt
Opinion
I hate to see dogs dressed up for ANYhing!!!
Look at those pictures. Do you see a single smile? I ask you?
Here is an interesting article about the music service shoot out between icloud, google music and amazon cloud:
http://www.komando.com/tips/index.aspx?id=11760&utm_medium=nl&utm_source=totd-recap&utm_content=2011-12-18-article&utm_campaign=answer-end-a&page=4
Kim Komando has a tech show on the radio in most areas. She is knowledgeable and down to earth.
I have an ipad, ipod, pc(s) and android phone (for swype) and a Kindle 2. I can tell that there is not going to be a one size fits all. Any recommendations from you all?
Has anyone seen the new Samsung phone? Nexxus? It gives the new Razr a run for its money I am told.
@Moon-howler
He showed off his history knowledge about the Supreme Court.
How judges should be subpoenad to appear before Congress
and state why they voted the way they did. And on, and on, and on..
His demeanor was such as “Bob, you don’t really understand this”
@punchak,
How did he justify thinking congress should be able to grill judges on their rulings?
I just can’t stand him. (before getting to policy,)
So Newt’s not popular with liberals. I bet he’s sad all day long about that!
Newt isn’t popular with a lot of conservatives either, it sounds like. @ pokie. Moderates can’t stand him either.
Glad to see the Pug front and center!! My pug sheds like crazy. It actually shed way more than a much bigger German Shepard. I’ve done a comparison at my house. I’ve recently purchased a deshedding comb for Pug Angel, and she sleek and smooth, at least for now anyways.
Started shopping yesterday. While at the mall today I saw Emma and the Equestrian Unit trailer in the parking lot. Unfortunately, I did not see the horseys with my own two eyes. 😉
It was a long day at the mall, to be sure. It was great to see you, Lafayette!
Obama will kick Newt’s butt in the general election.
@Starryflights That may be true, but it will be fun watching Newt make Obama squirm during the debates.
Want a great feel good Christmas movie with a great ending? Try the 12 Dogs of Christmas. It streams via Netflix and also Amazon video. Good retro movie. It takes place during the depression and it shows crooked politicians.
I felt right at home during the movie…right here in PWC. !2 Dogs should replace A Christmas Story for a year or two, it is that good.
Probably the best deal in town these days is buying Amazon Prime. You get thousands of streaming video and TV shows along with it. All shipping is free if it is directly from Amazon. My account has paid for itself already.
I am one of those people who will add a couple more items to get to the amount where the shipping is free so this account is great for me.
Gainesville Resident who rarely posts here now tipped me off about it.
Warning. It required Flash so I don’t think it will play on ipad.
CNN has live reporting on the death of North Korea’s “Dear Leader” Kim Jong-Il. Fox News has a re-run of Huck. North Korea has nukes. South Korea military on full alert. CNN experts discussing ramifications. Huck playing bass with Yo-Yo Ma on chello in Christmas song duet.
Looks like we are all going to get a tax hike for Christmas from the repugnican controlled House of representatives who rejected the payroll tax cut extension passes by the senate. Thanks a lot, repugs. We will remember this next year.
@Morris Davis
you beat me to the punch. I was just coming on to report the same thing. Do I think the world is a safer place? No. Probably not as safe as it was even yesterday.
Starry, I am still trying to figure out the tax hike. Will more be taken out for FICA, Fed and state now? Will employers have to put more in also?
That sure helps the economy. Are these people in Congress nuts?
Gotta protect the rich (which they are) at any cost.
In lighter fare….
North Korea now has a new leader….
Leader to be…..determined.
At the opposite side/
Vaclav Havel died the same day. He led the Velvet Revolution in 1989, that led to Czechoslovakia beeing freed from the communistic rule.
It is too bad that Havel and Kim died so close together as the death of the latter will tend to overshadow the former. To look at it another way, the guy who is famous for what he did TO his country will garner a lot more attention than the guy who is famous for what he did FOR his country. One thing with lingering bi-partisan approval that Bush did was to award Haval the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003. The Dear Leader, on the other hand, was a pimple on the butt of humanity. Leadership now passes to “The Great Successor” Kim Jong-un who was promoted ahead of his older brother who got busted trying to sneak into Japan on a fake passport to go to Disneyland a few years back. So to one, rest in peace. To the other, roast in hell.
@Morris Davis
I agree wholeheartedly!
I agree with this from Instapundit:
Josh Trevino’s tweet of the year: “I’d like to think God let Havel and Hitchens pick the third.”
Let’s beat up on the post office for a while. If it is a decent stamp, like the fir trees and cones (and forever) then they do away with it. If it is something boring it hangs around for forever. Sorry, the liberty face just doesn’t do it for me. Does that make me a bad person?
I like the idea of the vanity stamp…within reason. They have them. They are called custom stamps. a book of 20 $.44 stamps costs over 20 bucks. How about charging a nickle over for vanity stamps? They can keep their over priced stamps.
The post office is turning me in to Andy Rooney.

I almost wept when I read this. This is just too good.
“For many students, Los Angeles Unified’s introduction of healthful lunches — part of a campaign against obesity, diabetes and other problems — has been a flop. The district says the menu will be revised.”
So, what do the students do when confronted with a government that tells them they are restricted from eating the way they want?
“There’s just one problem: Many of the meals are being rejected en masse. Participation in the school lunch program has dropped by thousands of students. Principals report massive waste, with unopened milk cartons and uneaten entrees being thrown away. Students are ditching lunch, and some say they’re suffering from headaches, stomach pains and even anemia. At many campuses, an underground market for chips, candy, fast-food burgers and other taboo fare is thriving.”
Capitalism, WOOHOO!!!!!
Take that revenuers!!! BAM! KA-POW!
When the govt tries to force people to change they breed future dissidents. I LOVE IT!! 🙂
Finally something GOOD in our public education system is happening that I can get behind.
Are you going to enjoy paying the increased taxes down the road? Didn’t think so.
I saw one school district, (corner of my eye) is dropping their healthy program and going back to pizza and burgers. Too much healthy stuff in the garbage. On the other hand, listening to what went in the garbage, who could blame the kids.
You can lead a horse to water…..
@marinm
@Moon-howler
Deal with the USPS at their offices for just five minutes, and you’ll be completely enlightened as to why they are hanging by a thread.
Least popular Congress in history – http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/wonkbook-the-least-popular-congress-in-history/2011/12/20/gIQA8mGp6O_blog.html – at least the American People are getting that right, but will they do anything about it (ie, vote em all out).
@SlowpokeRodriguez
My local postoffice is tops. The clerks are helpful, patient and friendly. They help
people with overseas packages that need different labels; they cope with customers whose English isn’t exactly perfect. 1000 cheers for my postoffice!
Maybe Pokie comes in with an attitude?
I was thinking about Will Rogers, the great 1930s humorist, today. He was the Jon Stewart of his time. One of the biggest treats I ever had was seeing one of the final performances of James Whitmore’s solo show in which he portrayed Will Rogers. That took place at Ford’s Theater often until Whitmore retired. It was recorded, and several years ago broadcast on PBS. If you ever get a chance to hear the recording, definitely do so.
In light of our recent Prince William County Board of Supervisors election, I want to share some Will Rogers quotes that are as relevant today as they were during his time.
“In America we have the best politicians money can buy.”
“There’s no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.”
“The Democrats and Republicans are equally corrupt — it’s only in the amount where the Republicans excel.”
“I can remember way back when a liberal was generous with his own money”
“A fool and his money are soon elected.”
“We always want the best man to win an election. Unfortunately, he never runs.”
“You’ve got to be an optimist to be a Democrat, and you’ve got to be a humorist to stay one”
“Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.”
“I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat.”
@ntk
All of those seem to strike a chord.
“We oppose the Senate bill because doing a two-month extension instead of a full-year extension causes uncertainty for job creators.”
And with that Speaker Boehner gave the finger to 110,000,000 Americans who don’t qualify as “job creators” and sent the House home to enjoy the holidays.
@Moe
I am still trying to figure out why if it is so bad for 2 months, why they want it for 12 of those months or nothing. They didn’t get to manipulate enough I suppose.
I feel real comfortable now saying that the House Republicans raised taxes.
Bill Clinton was on O’Reilly tonight. Now they are doing a post mortem of the interview. Bill Clinton is the good guy and Obama is the bad guy. Do they think we are stupid? How clearly I remember what was done to Bill Clinton.
Clinton was treated vilely.
You crack me up. Try the one at Union Station a few times! Just let us know when you’ll be there….I like to watch and laugh.
Actually, I take that back just a little. Most of the problem at the Post Office isn’t the workers at all, but rather the people who come in completely unprepared. I have learned that you don’t get too fancy at the post office. Know what you’re doing, and don’t ever require the postal worker to fire a neuron. Do that, and you’ll be fine. Most of the folks who have trouble at the Post Office don’t know what they are doing and should probably go to the UPS store where they’ll hold your hand through the whole process, then rape you financially. I swear by the priority mail flat rate boxes. I’m just saying people expect some help when they walk into the post office and I get a kick out of watching one after another walk out in disgust. But I’ll take back that it’s ALL the Postal Workers fault. The customers have to realize that they aren’t in Nordstroms!
Oh Goody! John McCain’s on Hannity tonight. I have to get one of those toy pistols that shoots suction-cup darts if I’m going to watch this! 🙂
I am watching Boomer Eiason. I prefer him over McCain. I used to watch him at UMD with Mr. Howler.
The Capitals won 4 – 1!!! Yeehah!
Cheer!!! I forgot to watch. grrrrrr
@SlowpokeRodriguez
Why on earth would you go to the postoffice at Union Station? Try a small local instead.
Why would you go to Union Station?
“Why on earth would you go to the postoffice at Union Station? Try a small local instead.”
Fewer black helicopters because of the exclusion zone over DC airspace.
What is the bungling congress doing this morning? Are they just going to leave town and let the payroll tax come back? I am still confused if it is FICA AND federal tax.
Regardless, if it expires, it will hit the middle class between the eyes by about $1000 a year for those making $50k. That’s a pretty good smack for people who are already struggling.
It now seems that there are 4
issues:
1. Will it infuse money into the economy?
2. Will it clobber middle class families?
3. Should it have happened in the first place?
4. How ridiculous does the tea party caucus look now? Talk about the Grinches who stole Christmas.
I guess it isn’t quite as easy as it looks, is it, Tea Party. Lift that ceiling on your campaign contributors. There is no reason to stop the ss tax at $106k Don’t sock it to the poor middle class again. Let’s give everyone a turn.
I don’t have a problem with raising the tax on those with higher incomes…as long as they still get their money. Its either their retirement or its just another tax.
And the Tea Party looks good compared to the Senate Democrats that a) refuse to write a budget. b) refuse to even take up numerous jobs bills from the House c) refuse to pass the House bill
It takes TWO to have a standoff.
The Tea Party is the only one looking at the out of control spending, jobs, and Senate malfeasance.
How about this?
Since the GOP has already caved on the idea that that SS tax holiday is a good thing.
So the GOP needs to pass a 12 month Social Security tax holiday with NO riders, additions, etc. Make it a clean bill.
There. If the Democrats want to play politics..THEY can add things to it. If they want to raise taxes on the “rich” then they can write a bill without holding SS tax cuts as hostage. Either their ideas are good for the country or they are not.
I agree with Boener on this, that creating a 2 month patch – is no solution at all. How does it get figured – ie, what if the 2 month patch is not extended for the entire year, how does a company figure out the tax. My income is in waves -I earn income during January, but do not receive it for a while – imagine the complexity this introduces.
The fix should be either for the year, or none. This is where Congress is failing us – constantly kicking the can down the road, spilling soup along the way – meanwhile, the people on main street get soup on themselves all along. If anyone ran a business the way Congress runs the country, you would not have a business to run.
It’s getting pretty cold here in hell cause I just 100% agree with Pat.
I also agree on a clean bill.
I’m all for a tax rate cut. But I say cut it all. Congress needs to stop taking my money. They need to stop taking Corporations money.
Leave us alone.
@punchak
Cause that’s the one I pass on my walk to work. I’ve got those folks figured out, though. I do simple transactions, ready to go, and smile and wish them a nice day, and we get along fine. I watch three people walk outta that joint totally disgusted every day, though.
