Aurora in Russia

A huge CME on Wednesday set off an eletromagnetic frenzy.  Wouldn’t it just be wonderful to see the Aurora Borialis just once?  This one was taken in the past day or so, and looks like green smoke is rising up out of the snow.

It looks like winter passed us by.  Is anyone interested in a Moonhowlings Meet Up at Mama Mia’s in the next couple of weeks?  We can ask Steve to scout it out again.  Maybe we can get some folks out we still haven’t met and of course we can extend an invitation to Cargo.  Maybe we can even get another red velvet cake out of Chris.

Another CME is incoming.  The picture on the right was taken in Iceland.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Apple Inc’s latest iPad sports a crisper display and an array of technology advances that, while less than revolutionary, may prove enough for now to keep rivals like Amazon.com Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd at bay.

While stopping short of vaulting ahead of Motorola and Samsung, the device — which comes 4G-ready and boasts a quad-core graphics processor — is capable enough to help safeguard its two-thirds market share. “The screen is a notable feature for non-techie customers, as is the faster connectivity. That’s something that mainstream consumers can identify with,” said Morningstar analyst Michael Holt. “There’s pent-up demand because a new device was widely anticipated. I they’ve made enough incremental improvements to do well.”

I wonder if they’re going to put data limits on the 4G. If they do, then what’s the point?

  2. Yes, there are data limits. Both ATT and Verizon have limits.

My old data plan with ATT is unlimited. If i need the plan, I get it be unlimited forever. I could get a new one and keep it on the old plan. I could also get a new one without 4G and just use the old one if I was without wifi. Or I could just use my old one and forget the new one because I don’t need every new electronoic toy known to man.

  3. Oh vomit!!!!! That’s it. No more meat.

    ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

  4. Terry McAuliffe is making the TV rounds. Guess what that means. He will be our next governor. He is who we should have run last time. He also learned from last time. When in Virginia, don’t try to outdo everyone with what looks like carpet bagger money. You can’t go downstate with Northern Virginia uppity-ness or yankee money. He paid. He won’t make the same mistake again. He needs to hire a native born handler.

  5. marinm

    @Moon-howler

On top of that the ‘unlimited’ customers actually get throttled at a lower threshold than the customers that pay only for 3 gigs per month.

Oh and there are reports that the 4S phone is reporting 4G speeds when the phone isn’t rated for it.. it was a concession to AT&T for marketting purposes. I think it’ll confuse customers (cue the FTC)

    Cuccineli for Guvner!!

  6. Pat Herve

    @Emma

Emma – spot on – the pink slime issue is only the tip of the iceberg – what the big conglomerates have done to our food chain is criminal – and the FDA and USDA have gone along with everything they have asked for. Costco has about the best reputation for ground beef (EColi testing and no pink slime), Whole Foods are a close second.

Why is it, that producers can put all kinds of stuff into foods, and not have to disclose that they are putting in all this other stuff. Sickening. And, it is all in a drive to get the cost down – we are talking about penny per pound savings – I will pay the extra penny.

  7. Steve Thomas

Moon-howler :Oh vomit!!!!! That’s it. No more meat.
    ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

What do you think hotdogs are made of?

    1. @Steve, gross things I don’t want to know about. I refuse to talk about hotdogs.

  8. Mom

Hot dogs are not gross, they are a staple of our American culture, now Haggis, that’s a different story.

    1. You are right on both counts, Mom. They are gross and a staple of our American culture. I pretend beef dogs have less rat crap in them.

  9. punchak

I LOVE a good hotdog, if Kielbasa is considered hotdog, that is.

    1. I like them too but I only eat them on special occassions.

  10. SlowpokeRodriguez

“Do you know the kinds of things that can fall into an industrial sausage press? Not excluding rodent fur and bug excrement?” –Tom Hanks, Dragnet

  11. punchak

    @SlowpokeRodriguez
Not hotdog but about bugs just the same.

Do you ever think about all the places money, coins and paper, has been?
Can you imagine the gazillions of bugs on it all? It’s been in pockets,
on the floor, fallen into all kinds of substances. People lick their thumbs to
count out paper money. What about shopping carts?

Heck, rodent fur and bug excrement (BUG excrement – how do they find that kind of stuff?)
probably won’t kill you or make you sick if thoroughly cooked. Not that I would want it listed among “ingredients”.

  12. Ewwww….supposedly cell phones are dirtier than toilet seats. How gross is that. Computer keyboards must be running a close second.

  13. Lafayette

Moon-howler :Ewwww….supposedly cell phones are dirtier than toilet seats. How gross is that. Computer keyboards must be running a close second.

Our keyboards might need a Haz Mat permit. 🙂

  14. Hotel rooms. Airplanes. You do not want to know what I pick up every day with my trash stick in neighborhoods. Everytime I think I’ve seen it all…I find something new.

I am interested in a Moonhowling’s Meet Up! I missed the last one because I was out of town.

  15. punchak

Washington Times has a headline about our Energey Secretary’s wife driving a
    “gas guzzler”. Total non-story!

  16. @punchak

Why does it care? I drive a gas guzzler also.

Cindy, I will check with Steve. He is the goto guy for this.

  17. Big happenings up on Sudley Manor Drive early evening. 6 cop cars. Lafayette, did you get that scanner yet? What was going on? Jarvis Ct.

  18. Emma

Neither was Sarah Palin the only one Maher was attacking. So much flutter, and in polite society, Maher’s word is considered so much more verboten, but since it was against a conservative woman, who cares?

  19. kelly_3406

In the interest of national unity, I remind everyone that St. Patrick’s Day ia approaching. It is important to prepare appropriately for what should ba a national holiday:

    1. Cute video. I definitely approve. @Kelly and Emma

    @Emma
The comments are closed on the Rainbow Riding thread. Way to go to the Johnny Come Lately that must have triggered the closing of the comments.

Never been on a horse, really? I have a friend in Cattlelt that has a few riding horses. Let me know, I will gladly take you there. This is a sincere offer, my friend. 🙂

    1. @Lafayette, you have assessed the situation accurately. I simply don’t have time to monitor potentially libelous remarks. I wanted to kick back and watch a little TV. If people think that someone has done something illegal or corrupt then they have a duty to discuss the issue with the Commonwealth’s Attorney and not air it on a local blog they trolled on to.

Beating a dead horse needs to be done on someone else’s blog and not this one. The comments may open back up when I have the time to sit here and monitor them.

As a general comment, it probably isn’t the smartest thing for strangers to come on the blog and start making demands. Insulting Elena and me isn’t a real good way to get an invitation to stay a while. In fact, it might just get one’s name in permanent moderation.

  21. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Excellent opinion piece:

Luckily, Gloria Allred has been working like an entire army of PR professionals to rehabilitate Limbaugh’s image by spewing noxious gas out of the hole under her nose. You can’t BUY that kind of positive PR.

  22. Emma

@kelly_3406 Hilarious. Funny you mention that. I’ve got corned beef and cabbage in the crockpot, and getting ready to make soda bread for Sunday dinner.

  23. Emma

@Lafayette Baby steps for me. I’m just getting over my fears and getting back to riding a bicycle. I thought drivers were angry and insane enough as it is–put a bike near them and they almost see you as a bowling pin. Come to think of it, maybe horses are safer.

  24. Censored bybvbl

Our national symbol, the American Eagle, can be found hanging out at the PWC landfill off rt. 234. There are at least three adults and probably a couple juveniles. Bring your binoculars. I’ve seen them at the wood’s edge and flying across Dumfries Road with some prey in their talons.

    1. Neat!!! Where is that camera? We want pictures!

  25. Censored bybvbl

The camera is attached to a tripod in my darkroom. My new cheap camera might not be able to zoom in enough to get a good picture. The birds have been hanging around for awhile…many seagull snacks – and probably a few rodents – from which to choose. We had them in our yard a few years back. They pooped all over my socialist Scandinavian car.

    1. ewwwww nothing like a little eagle crap….

  26. @Emma

Didn’t we discuss this last week? Don’t you think much of the outrage has to do with the fact that Limbaugh made his remarks, then came back a second day to grind them in?

Volume has much do do with it. People say nasty things all the time. I don’t listen to most people who say nasty things. Limbaugh’s comments were heard by many people. I doubt if there is anyone other than cave dwellers who don’t know about it. Limbaugh is a self appointed spokesperson for the conservative movement. Maher not so much. I don;t know anyone who watches his show.

Why doesn’t it suffice to say both acts are wrong rather than playing victim?

  27. Emma

“Why doesn’t it suffice to say both acts are wrong rather than playing victim?”

Funny, that’s how many conservatives feel with the left-wing’s incessant “blame Bush” mentality, simultaneously cheering every time Obama commits still more of our military resources to more and more conflicts, while condemning Bush’s war record. Echoes of Nancy “we should do more” Pelosi…

But poor victim Obama–the left keeps reminding us how overwhelmed he was when he was elected and then found out that we were at war! Such a big mess to expand…er, clean up–and no one told him about it!

    1. Yawn! And she flips and tears out after Obama now. Good grief. I thought we were talking about calling women nasty names.

What are we blaming Bush for now? I can’t keep up. Emma, get up. Walk away. It will drive you crazy.

  28. Censored bybvbl

    @Emma

Where’s that “conservative” value of being able to accept responsibility for one’s own (Bush’s or Limbaugh’s) mess? Own it.

  29. Emma

You kill me, Censored. You’re a hoot.

  30. Censored bybvbl

Glad you can laugh at something.

  31. SlowpokeRodriguez

Ohhh, now it’s Fonda, Steinem, AND Allred. By the time this is finished, we’ll have to give Rush some kind of national hero medal.

    1. Has it occurred to you that none one knows what you are talking about? Do you?

  32. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Moon-howler :
Has it occurred to you that none one knows what you are talking about? Do you?

Try reading your sentence, here. Right back at ya!

    1. I said I didn’t know what you were talking about.

I finally let my curiosity get the best of me. The third person was Robin Morgan. She, Gloria Alred and Jane Fonda want to silence Rush. Yawn. Who cares. They just guaranteed that every ditto-head in America will now pay to sponsor him. Too stupid. They are as foolish as Limbaugh.

It’s much more fun to let him make an ass of himself and then to m make him own it.

Thanks for bringing it up. Next time just tell what’s going on. Save me some time.

  33. SlowpokeRodriguez

Nobody here knows why Rush Limbaugh is in the news lately! Nobody knows why Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda, and Gloria Allred might be speaking out against Rush lately. Maybe somewhere else they know why these things might be happening, but not here!

    1. Why don’t you tell us Pokie. Some of us might be doing other things. We rely on you.

  34. Emma

I hereby declare that Bill Maher is the de facto head of the Democrat Party. Therefore all liberals must now accept responsibility for his mess. Own it, people.

    1. Think you can get him to show up at the liberal conventions? Rush was filling up 3 overfill rooms as CPAC about 4 weeks ago.

I am not sure Bill Maher could draw that big of a crowd but maybe. What’s a good Liberal convention to go to?

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert sure can draw that big of a crowd. Let’s nominate them to head the liberals and the Democrats. Throw in the Indies while we are at it.

      Weeee doggies!!!!

  35. Emma

Actually, you are right, Moon. Stewart would be vastly more entertaining than Maher!

  36. marinm

Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before but whenever the babies get fussy I have them watch an episode or two of Sesame Street on the iPad. It’s like crack for them. However I balance that with correcting those central messages about sharing and compassion (liberal idealism and socialism) and read transcripts from Glenn Beck or a Chapter from anything written by Ayn Rand to balance them out.

I’m hoping that the first real phrase I can teach thm both is, “Where is your warrant??”

  37. @Emma

They are at least likeable and have the capability of seeing shades of gray. I think they are funny.

  38. @marin, they are your kids. I guess as long as Mrs. M agrees, you can teach them what you want to teach them.

    I always liked Count Dracula.

  39. The priest who denied the Mt. Ranier woman communion has her mother’s funeral has been placed on administrative leave. His behavior has stirred up a great deal of discussion in area Catholic churches.

Gaithersburg Catholic priest who triggered national debate late last month when he denied Communion to a lesbian at her mother’s funeral Mass has been placed on administrative leave from ministry in the Washington archdiocese.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post_now/post/gaithersburg-catholic-priest-suspended-for-intimidating-behavior/2012/03/11/gIQAF4lk5R_blog.html?hpid=z3

This dude should be kept away from parishioners. Perhaps some good has come out of this case. It apparently opened up some much needed dialogue in the Catholic community.

  40. Come to the shaming room:

    http://wpcomics.washingtonpost.com/client/wpc/db/

    episode 1 Doonsbury

In our case, the Shamers have names: Delegate Shamer Bob Marshall, Delegate Shamer Jackson Miller Senator Shamer Chuck Colgan Delegate Shamer Lingamfelter, Delegate Shamer Rich Anderson

Shame Shame Shame on the Virginia Shamers!!!

  41. Pat Herve

The issue with Rush – this is not the first time Rush has been in the hot seat for his (insert – racist, sexist, bigot, rude, crude) comments. This was just another time Rush has made repeated comments which are totally out of line. He still gets invited back to CPAC.

Maher – does he even have an audience? Do they publish his numbers? What event is Maher invited to speak at that is comparable to CPAC – is there such a thing?

I do not watch/listen to either. They are both idiots in my mind – getting crowded in there (my mind).

    1. Every once in a while I go seal off the house, pull the blinds, put on ear phones and sneak a listen to each of them, hoping I won’t be shamed by getting caught. EWWWWWWW. Bill Maher is far smarter. While he is over the top, he is smarter than Rush. Rush is ust a blow-hard.

  42. From the WaPo:

… there’s a partisan lens to coloring pain at the pump and how much Obama is to blame for gas prices. Republicans and supporters of the tea party are more likely to report economic hardship. Nevertheless, the partisan divide is wider among Americans who earn college degrees or have annual incomes upwards of $50,000 than among lower income and education groups.

    Is this really anything new?

  43. Emma

Interesting. The Obama campaign is happily lapping up a $1 million donation to its super PAC from Bill Maher. The Bill Maher who has called conservative women every foul name imaginable, who has called little Trig Palin a “retard,” is giving a cool mil to the President who dares to lecture us about the tone of public discourse. Really? Must be nice when you are secure in the knowledge that your own wife or children won’t ever be attacked by that pig. And the celebrity feminists remain silent. This says it well: http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/12/opinion/christoph-terrel-bill-maher/index.html

  44. From the Shame Room-

    Doonsbury-Day 2

Do your parents know you are a slut?

    http://wpcomics.washingtonpost.com/client/wpc/db/

  45. Old News. I wondered where you were to ring in with this one. You’re a little late…[best Jon Stewart voice.]

I guess they could always give it back and then bury the money in a super pac. Would that make everyone feel better? Will you require the Rush money to go back also? I don’t know that money from Maher or Limbaugh is any dirtier or cleaner than any other political money.

Meanwhile, did you hear him do this or did you have to read about it a year later like the rest of us?

Maher has no sponsors. Maybe everyone could just boycott HBO. I also believe he specifically called Palin and Bachmann T*at and a C*nt. Every foul imaginable name is a bit of an overstatement. He called a couple of people foul misogynist names. I think he also probably called Christine O’Donnell something similar but I didn’t hear it with my own 2 ears. I don’t watch him.

And speaking of other comedians I don’t watch or listen to, check out the filth from Chris Rock.

    http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Chris_Rock

Is he also on HBO? Comedy Central?

We could create a whole hall of shame for misogynists. Is that really what they are? Am I a misogynist if I call Sarah Palin the C word? Does it mean I hate women or that I hate a specific woman? Does a woman saying it make it better or worse?

Here is an example of Palin’s maturity level. 🙄

    http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/03/07/sarah-palin-kathy-griffin-bully-has-been/#more-127436

  46. Kathy Griffin to me is a creep. Why acknowledge her? Why acknowledge Letterman? Does Palin have an ignore button? She needs to use it and not allow people to continually jerk her chain. I think maybe she has gotten better. I hope so.

So what is it we are mad at Obama for? His campaign accepting Maher money? Let’s ramp it up a notch and make sure we know he knew it happened. I am curious where this giving back money is supposed to end?

  47. Second Alamo

Oh just call it political reparations. He’ll get the picture, and if he didn’t know, then he certainly knows now. Next excuse.

  48. Second Alamo

Come to think of it, where is MoveOn.org protesting the white house calling the president a war criminal for the slaughter of innocent civilians? He is ‘Commander in Chief’ is he not? Oh wait, that was just an anti-Bush organization, I forgot. Ok, carry on, in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Gitmo as Bush is gone now.
