Where’s the info-graphic for the auto bailout? Where is the info-graphic for green energy initiatives? Want to see an info-graphic for how our debt has increased in the same Oct 08-Apr12 time period?
Find it yourself. This isn’t a short order kitchen.
This topic is about TARP.
Got something to say about TARP, say it. Otherwise, go to the open thread. Geez. Don’t be such a newbie.
OK, if it weren’t for TARP, we’d be 19 billion more in debt. How’s that?
And if we didn’t have TARP, what would have probably happened?
Moon, they just hate to admit that they could possibly be wrong. Just keep in mind the old adage about wrestling with a pig 😉
GM and Chrysler have repaid their loans in full way ahead of time. GM is once again the largest auto manufacturer in the world. U.S. auto sales up to 15+ million units, 11+ million of which were domestic sales. I don’t know where we are on gren stuff but anything we are doing is better than the Republican mantra of,”Drill baby, drill.”. Oh, I forgot, the only “green” they are interested in is the kind that crosses their collective palms from the wealthy crowd they work do hard to protect in the belief they are the job creators.
George,
Lest we forget the multitude of jobs that were saved by the auto bailout! Not just jobs to make the cars, but the “trickle” down effect had those companies perished. I guess republicans only care about the Millionaire “job creators” and not REAL businesses!
Of course, GM “payed” ahead of schedule with TARP money.
Color me unimpressed. Sure the money has been paid back, but the purpose of TARP was to stabilize the lending industry to help the housing market recover and spur a recovery. The housing market is still anemic with a flood of foreclosures expected and the unemployment rate is still 8% with the labor force participation rate at a record low 64%.
TARP accomplished the immediate objective of stabilizing the financial system, but failed to attain the more strategic objectives that would positively impact people’s lives.
Hi guys.
Thought I’d pop in, and what do I see?
GM lying about repaying loans.
GM has NOT paid back the loan. If its using gov’t money to pay us back, then they still owe us. The gov’t owns GM.

Even Politifact doesn’t believe it.

The gov’t is desperate for good news before the election.
GM can’t make a profit.
Chrysler was GIVEN to Fiat. FIAT repaid said loans. FIAT got a deal. Maybe. Chrysler is still losing money.
Ford did it right.
Oh,..and George…keep dreaming. Obama will create new jobs as soon as he leaves office. Meanwhile, we’ll just keep making do with 6 million jobs lost, 10% unemployment, and inflation of 10%. Or do you not buy gas and food?
Anyway…. Hope everyone is fine.
Bye
@kelly_3406
I disagree about the purpose of TARP. TARP was to stabilize the banking industry and to loosen credit. Without it, there was a great danger of many payrolls not being made. Cash was being horded.
At the time I never heard anything about spurring a housing recovering. I always thought it was about keeping banks from failing and keeping credit flowing.
I am not sure how long range it was supposed to be. I think you expected it to do more than it was designed to do. Still not a bad return. It had to happen.
By the way, I was sent this chart by a Republican and TARP was signed by your guy, not mine.
HI Cargo! How’s the family? How are the classes? Are you making A’s? [stern look]
I give up. I have looked and looked at the graphic I posted and I simply don’t see anything about GM. If GM has posted lies they are invisible to me.
I even put on my special glasses…the ones that cause only I to be be able to see dog doo in the floor. Still, no luck.
TARP was Mr. Bush’s baby. GM was Mr. Obama’s. Forgive me for giving George Bush credit for something. Shudder. I should have known better.
@Moon-howler
I do appreciate your attempt to give Bush credit for something. I have never been a big fan of TARP, so I do not think it was his finest hour. Nevertheless, I recognize that you have been very consistent on this and are trying to give credit where you think it is due.
Thanks Kelly, Yes, I have consistently liked TARP and thought it kept us from going in to full depression. I have always respected Hank Paulson also. I think he and Bush saved the country at a critical time.
@Moon-howler
Everyone is fine.
Honor Society and Dean’s List.
I brought of GM because they used TARP to repay some of the loans and keep stating that its all been paid back.
TARP was and is a power grab. Many banks did not want it. If they took gov’t money, they were forced to do certain things. Bush doesn’t need credit for TARP. He needs blame.
If there was such a problem, why hasn’t ANYONE in the SEC, etc investigated who started that run, how it happened, and what can we do to prevent it from happening again. I expect another run to start October of this year. Someone took $500 billion out of the markets in ONE DAY. Why hasn’t there been any interest by anyone other than a few conservatives?
