Huffington Post:
Nugent called President Obama a criminal and denounced his “vile, evil America-hating administration” which is “wiping its ass with the Constitution.” Taking it a step further, he said that “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.” “If you can’t galvanize and promote and recruit people to vote for Mitt Romney, we’re done,” he continued.Supreme Court justices also came under assault by Nugent, who claims that the court’s more liberal members have signed a declaration against Americans’ right to self-defense:“We’ve got four Supreme Court justices who don’t believe in the Constitution. Does everyone here know that four of the Supreme Court justices not only determined you don’t have the right to keep and bear arms, four Supreme Court justices signed their name to a declaration that Americans have no fundamental right to self-defense.”Nugent concluded with a call to cut off the heads of Democrats in November: “We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November. Any questions?”
Ted Nugent is an old rocker has-been who probably would have a difficult time playing Branson. Oh groan….he will be in Manassas on May 18, performing at Jiffy Lube with REO Speedwagon and Styx. I like the latter 2 groups but Nugent is a blow-hard hate monger. Now why are Styx and REO Speedwagon slumming by performing with him?
At any rate, his speech to the crowd at the NRA convention was simply unacceptable. Some conservatives are worried about Bill Maher? He is a Sunday School meek and mild compared to this dude. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney might want to distance himself from this guy.
Why does Romney need to distance himself from Nugent?
He didn’t say anything inaccurate. Hyperbolic about cutting heads off, but that was in context with his allegorical “We’re Braveheart.”
Abuse of the Constitution? Check.
Criminal actions? Check.
Fast and Furious? Check.
Ignoring Court decisions? Check.
Appointing unconstitutional lackeys? Check.
Crony Capitalism? Check.
And Scotus….
4 out of 5 decided that you did not have a constitutional right to carry in the Heller case. They seem to have reading comprehension problems. Its the right to keep AND BEAR arms.
All of that is opinion.
why does he have to distance himself? He doesn’t HAVE to. He should. Nugent is a loud-mouth redneck who offends people. Why would Mitt want to rub elbows with a loud-mouth redneck?
I agree that it would be in Mitt’s interest to distance himself from the Nuge too, but don’t let me stop him. Mitt can name Ted his VP candidate if he wants.
Incidentally, Ted Nugent dodged the Vietnam war draft. When it comes to actual fighting, he is a coward – all talk and no action, a paper tiger.
And frankly, I never pictured Mitt as a 2nd Amendment defender. Mass has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country.
While we’re at it how about we bring up the vitriol that was focused on Bush in his last years. Talk about vile! After all, Bush gets blamed for everything else that Obama fails at, but then blaming today’s problems on things that occurred years ago seems to be a recurring theme for some.
We don’t need restrictive gun laws, we need restrictive shooting laws, but then tell that to all the criminals with guns. BTW, what is the percentage of gun violence that is carried out by those with registered guns?
I hope the Nuge makes good on his threats.
Of course its all opinion. As is your opinion that its “hate speech” because you don’t agree with him.
I’ll worry about Romney and ol’ Ted when Obama repudiates his associations with terrorists and crooks. Except Ted is neither one of those…..so, Romney will GAIN points from the base because Ted says go vote and bring your friends.
Starry,
What threats were those?
“If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”
Love me some Motor City Madman! Testify!, Nuge!
This is outrageous! Only liberals are allowed to talk like this!
@SlowpokeRodriguez
I’ll be there to rock out to Terrible Ted, but not those other two bands. Love, love, love him!
@Lafayette, so are you going to holdyour ears when they perform?
I suppose it is possible to like someone’s music and distain their politics. I endured a night of Don Henley pontificating about Disney.
“Hate speech” = illegal words, illegal thoughts.
What a frightening concept.
I think Hate speech = hate speech.
@Moon-howler
No, I won’t be holding my ears. I’ll do like always. Leave here in perfect time to cruze on in just before my band(s) of choice play. I don’t endure any music I don’t like on the radio. There are certain bands, I change so quick, it would make your head spin. Ah, Henley..I would endure his amazing voice, in spite of his Disney BS.
Little PW “history”. Did you know Tommy Shaw of Styx was married to a native Brenstvillian once upon a time?
I didn’t see anything hateful during this speech. Late night comedians probably say worse..
Lots of flowery allegory. Nothing to see here.
How on earth will you know who is playing when? I think they are mixing it up from the videos I saw regarding the tour.
More PWC history–Where did Emmy Lou Harris graduate from high school?
@marinm
Its a lot different to hear someone do a skit than it is to hear someone just blurting that out. I haven’t heard anything that hateful out of Colbert or Stewart.
Is this the same crowd that was acting all prissy-assed over Maher and wanting Obama to be executed over Maher-speak? Both are bad taste.
Bad taste hate speech.
I think calling a grand sweep of people vile and evil pretty hateful. Futhermore, he is an ignorant liar.
Shame on the NRA for allowing someone to speak for them at their convention and say those things.
I’m not an NRA member as I see them as too liberal but this guy makes me have hope for them…
Please don’t tell me something like that. I have no idea what you mean by liberal but that isn’t a statement that generates respect.
I, as a gun owner, see the NRA as an irresponsible organization thinks more of increasing membership than public safety. There is something called balance.
The phrase ‘Hate speech” has taken on too broad of an interpretation and is used too broadly. This is not hate speech. It is political opposition speech and for the most part is accurate.
I’m all ears. Explain this notion of balance to me.
Also how public safety is increased when we eliminate all guns from everyone – including police and military. You can couple this one that the notion of gun free zones like schools, universities, hospitals and courthouses being 100% crime free..
Blue, who are you to determine what is “too broad of an interpretation?” Are you the new blog lexicographer?
Calling President Obama a criminal and denouncing the administration as “vile, evil America-hating administration” is irresponsibile and anti American in my opinion. He is crude and ignorant. Advocating chopping someone’s head off incitement to violence.
Nugent is speaking publically. He isn’t talking in his living room to a bunch of friends. He is speaking at the NRA convention using their sound equipment.
@marinm
Marin,your interpretation of the 2nd amendment is unacceptable to me. Let me put it bluntly. I don’t want a gang of frat boys with gun totting privileges. Secondly, I don’t want to walk around in an armed camp. You might think you are sane and intend no harm. the problem is, I don’t know you and I don’t know that.
If we all lived in the wild west, then perhaps. But we don’t. I can’t make it any simpler.
Heavy firearm power doesn’t enhance anyone. That person is just as likely to shoot his foot off as the next guy. Finally, I don’t want a bunch of yahoos running around who think they know it all in an emergency. Knowing about guns isn’t the same as being trained to react in a variety of situations. That includes the military. They aren’t trained for civilian law enforcement either as a general rule.
I got the Cat Scratch Fever!!
I am sure you can combat bartonella pokie. Just evoke the hantavirus. You will prevail.
Obama has signed no restrictive gun legislation since he became president and there is no such legislation pending in congress, so I don’t know wtf Ted and the NRA are whining about.
Anyway, who the hell cares what Ted thinks? The guy was a 1 hit wonder over 30 years ago and hasn’t done jack since. I see more of him on the Discovery channel than MTV.
And I hope the Jiffy will have walkways for all the people in walkers, canes, wheelchairs and provide hearing aids for the geriatrics who will attend his concert.
Starry, you are being an ageist. That is probably not a real safe track to take around here given that I am a grandmother and Elena is a mother. Unless, of course you want to say something absolutely wonderful towards the owners here…….then you can insult everyone else.
@Moon-howler
Sure do, Hoodbridge High. I believe she graduated top of her class. If memory serves me correctly.
Woodbridge isn’t that old. It’s Garfield. duh, Chris
I see more of him on Hannity than I do on the Discovery Channel which doesn’t bode well for old Teddy Boy. @Starry
You are right about Obama, Starry. It’s just all girlie hysteria on the part of Nugent and the NRA. The purpose of that hysteria is to stir up the ignorant.
As for the 4 Supremes, he is just lying there also. Kagan hasn’t had a case that involves 2nd amendment so I don’t know what that ass is talking about and neither does he.
I am just tired of listening to dumb asses screech about non existent threats. It worries me that this hate monger even has access to a gun.
@Lafayette
All I know is Old Garfield, not the new one. John Pitt was principal. Not even sure when. Mid to late 60’s maybe? Old Woodbridge High School would have been old enough so not so doh.
Ah ha! you are right. She was valedictorian and her dad was a marine stationed at Quantico. She had been a POW. I would guess from her bio that she was the class of 65. Also, I think maybe John Pitt was a math teacher there, not the principal when she graduated.
Wiki has a pretty detailed accounting of her life.
I never listened to her that much.
@Moon-howler
How you avoided the questions posed spoke volumes. Thank you.
The only time I’ve seen Ted Nugent was on one of Anthony Bourdain’s show. And let’s just say I wasn’t watching Ted Nugent. ( Anthony Bourdain – a hottie who likes food and is daring in his travels – even fired one of Ted’s guns. There – I’m a sexist. I wouldn’t feel the same way about Paula Dean – if I were even alive after following her diet.)
The only target Nugent should worry about is the one the FBI, Secret Service, or other law enforcement branch has on his, Nugent’s, back after his spouting off.
Don’t forget your geritol, old man.
What questions, marin? If you mean having a conversation about balance, why bother. I would start by going back to one hand gun a month. If you need more with good reason, you can apply. that is my example of balance.
I don’t think there is an unlimited right to firearms, now or back when the amendment was written.
There is nothing to avoid, nothing to discuss. When enough people are blasted away by yahoos who are untrained and have no business with guns, the pendulum will swing the other way.
Are you grinding your teeth yet? Don’t even start on me wanting to collect everyone’s gun. I don’t. I just don’t want to deal with everyone’s gun. You assume everyone is sane and should be well armed. I assume there are crazies out there and I don’t want to be around them, especially if they have weapons.
Marin, how is public safety enhanced when every house has a firearm in it? Just recently someone crawled through a dog door in a Dale City house and stole a handgun. Harry Homeowner may have been a big scaredy-pants and bought the gun for protection. Well, now there’s an extra gun in some thief’s hand.
I’ll tell you from first hand experience that as a child I knew where the guns in the house were. I think most children are snoopy enough to know. They also may know where cabinet keys are. Your gun may pose more of a danger to your own family than any thug you’re likely to meet walking back from the neighborhood 7-11. My father took us with him a couple times when he went practice shooting and let us know how loud and powerful guns were. It took away some of the fascination with them.
Have you found any restrictions that the NRA won’t fight? Too many gun deaths, woundings, and other incidents have been in the public’s eye recently. It seems foolish to invite Nugent to make a
public appearance at one of its conventions.
“Harry Homeowner may have been a big scaredy-pants and bought the gun for protection. Well, now there’s an extra gun in some thief’s hand.”
So it’s our job as citizens to help keep guns out of criminals’ hands by disarming ourselves. Interesting, although ultimately laughable, leap of logic.
In related news, Ann and Mitt are dropping the Nuge family values classic “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang” from the campaign’s play list. Uncle Ted is just one of the many tough-talking “patriots” who dodged the draft when he was called to serve. He’s had a couple of wives, a few out-of-wedlock kids, a fiance that was one-third his age, zero military experience, and a high school diploma … he qualifies for a Faux show or a neo-conservative leadership post.
@Morris Davis Wow, your moral superiority is blinding.
Emma — I bet if judged against the Nuge standard there’s a chance your morals might shine a little too.
I remember the Dixie Chix being castigated by the right for being so disrespectful of President Bush. I love the double standard. Geez, what they said is tooth fairy mean by comparison to Ted Nugent!
Just days before the bombing began in Iraq, singer Natalie Maines spoke out against the president. “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas,” she told fans in London.
Maines later apologized, saying her remark was “disrespectful.” But country radio stations across the country yanked the trio from playlists, while some protesters resorted to publicly trashing their CDs to demonstrate against the singers’ perceived lack of patriotism.
Elena, you are exactly right. In fact,the blow back from that still goes on today. The difference is, the Dixie Chicks were stars and Nugent is an old burned out has-been. he really has very little to lose.
he should be held to the same standard they were, however. You and I both know that isn’t going to happen.
@Elena And so it goes. Free speech is messy, isn’t it?
I just find it funny that the diatribe, the visceral hatred he espoused is not condemned, even the tiniest bit, by anyone on the “other” aisle from this blog.
I was able to understand why Hilary Rosen, albeit unintentionally, offended stay at home moms, so why, why is it sooooo hard for the the people from the right to understand why what ted nugent said is simply WAY over the top. Yes, in a Democracy he can say what he wants, but that also means others can condemn his tone and vitriol as well.
Elena, sort of for the same reason many contributors here found it not unacceptable for the Secret Service to be ‘ho-ing around on their tax money. Its some sort of cognitive dissonance that allows people waving a flag, mumbling about Jesus and patriotism to call people vile names and to lie. I don’t claim to get it. I have just noticed the habit.
“So it’s our job as citizens to help keep guns out of criminals’ hands by disarming ourselves. Interesting, although ultimately laughable, leap of logic.”
Ding ding ding. We have a winner!!
With the Dixie Chicks and free speech; they have the right to say what they want. I have a right as a consumer to support them or not through my dollars for those views.
“Marin, how is public safety enhanced when every house has a firearm in it?”
Civil defense for one. Domestic law enforcement and self defense for another. How many lives are saved yearly from defensive firearm usage? Here’s a question. If I drive by and see a police officer fighting with a suspect and I stop and get out of my car and see the bad guy point a gun at the downed police officer – would you like me to shoot or call for another cop? Which option enhances public safety?
Yes. To MH and Censoreds question. I see the NRA as liberal as they don’t fight for Constitutional Carry. The idea that a permit is somehow required to own or carry a pistol is abhorrent to me. I should not have to ask for permission for something that is a diety-given right.
@Emma
Where do you think most criminals get their guns? Did the gun-fairy wave a magic wand and make them suddenly appear? Straw buyers? Thieves? Private sales? Is the NRA doing much to combat those sources?
I’ve never had to lay a hand on a gun. How many times have you fired yours in self defense? It’s smarter to run out the door with your cell phone than confront a burglar. Shoot someone and you’ll have a civil suit on your hands that will cost more than the property a thief walks off with.
@marinm
How many times did that scenario about the downed police officer happen in the US in the last few years? Compare that to the number of times some child has shot himself, a schoolmate, or playmate.
Now I’ll really rankle you gunslingers. I believe all guns need to be registered and the ownership routinely traced.
@Censored bybvbl
So your answer is let the cop die? That’ll enhance public safety.
Check.
Same with a rape in progress? Keep the pistol holstered and call 911?
Exactly how many rapes were twarted in the United States last year because the woman had a gun and used it?
Register and trace away. You won’t change the crime stats one bit.
