Will the rain take away some of this miserable pollen?  My car is green.  Everything is green!

Speaking of gardens…..what is this I hear about a biblical Garden of Eden theme in Old Town Manassas on

Battle  Street?  Temptation and the Broken Apple?  Which local politicians will be auditioning for the role of the Serpent?

Who will play Eve?

Feel free to make your nominations.  Hmmmmm….I know who *I* would nominate for the Serpent.

104 Thoughts to “Open Thread…………………………………………………………………………………………Wednesday, April 18”

  1. punchak

Interesting to reade about Manassas and Manassas Park schools in today’s WashPost.
Picture of the cute girls with their instruments made me smile.

    1. Manassas City has different demographics than the Park. The WaPo didn’t tell the entire story regarding demographics.

Some in Manassas City think a new school board will fix its problems. It won’t. At least one candidate thinks he is going to run the “illegals” out of town. Expect another law suit if that clown gets in and has any influence.

Basically, Manassas City needs to compare itself to Manassas City and leave the Park out of it. Manassas City needs to set its own goals and expect positive change in small steps.

The two really have little in common.
The WaPo cited difference in how many students were economically disadvantaged and what percent were limited English proficiency. there are other factors to consider also. Manassas City has a fairly large middle and upper class to supply services for also. In a small school system, it is very difficult to have programs for everyone. A trip along Stonewall Road certainly tells a story that might not be the most politically correct conversation to have and certainly not one the school system can have. Compare. It looks the same, p[retty much until you get down to the percent of people living below the poverty level. MC has almost twice as many. Maybe what they have been telling us about povety and educational sucess is correct.

      manassas Park:
      http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/51/5148968.html
      City of Manassas
      http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/51/5148952.html

  2. I left out what is probably the most critical comment of all. MP kids have been told that they are special and worthwhile. Look at their performances in area parades. Those kids radiate self confidence and pride.

We are all aware of the life time sneers about Manassas Park in this area. It has always been the child of a lesser god, so to speak. Well those kids aren’t buying it and neither are the teachers.

Can Manassas City say the same? Do they build their kids and the teachers up or do they continually act like nothing is ever good enough? PWC and Manassas City both need to learn that it takes more than chips, dip and snickerdoodles in the lounge at Christmas time and a thrown together lunch during teacher appreciation week to make staff feel appreciated. That’s where it starts.

I know teachers who have left both county and MC to go work for the Park because the pay was better and morale was better. If you are supported you generally do a better job and radiate that to your students. MP rules. I have been trying to figure out their success for more than a few years. That’s the best I can come up with and so far, no one has disputed it.

i think MP is simply a case of the little engine that could. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.

  3. I guess no one but Republicans will be begging Senator Colgan to run again. From abortion issues to budget, Chuck was their man.

  4. Emma

Speaking of the parades, look at all the beautifully-outfitted kids in all the other area band programs who come to the City and march, and then look at our own Osbourn kids. Dull, faded, 20-year-old uniforms, and no money in the budget to replace them. That speaks volumes.

    1. Stonewall Jackson’s band kids used to come around every September in their hot, wool uniforms asking for donations. I don’t know if they have gotten them yet or not. However, you don’t see the football team having to go beg for uniforms. That speaks the same volumes. ancient

There should be money for band uniforms at least as often as there is money for new textbooks. Shame on which ever end of the budget process keeps that from happening.

  5. Lafayette

It’s a shame how Osbourn sends their kids out marching. Stonewall’s band gets new uniforms every couple of years. They have a very active boosters, which I believe the city does too. Especially considering Osbourn has an alumni association, Stonewall does not.

    Moon,
Check your email. I’ve sent you a picture. I know you are sure to put to good use. 👿

  7. SlowpokeRodriguez

Allow me to express my complete satisfaction that, having failed to sell the “war on women” to any but the most easily swayed…we have now begun “dog wars.”. Now this I can get into!

  8. Steve Randolph

    http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2012/04/18/romneys-cookie-comment-bites-back/

A War on Women, A War on the 99%, A War on Dogs, are bad enough,
but now a War on Cookies? Shame!

  9. Cato the Elder

    @SlowpokeRodriguez

Romney may have had a dog on the roof of his car, but Obama had one on the roof of his mouth.

  10. Ray Beverage

Cindy left off – and a joy for all the Apple Users – the new service store for Apple products on Battle Street:

  11. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Cato the Elder :
    @SlowpokeRodriguez
Romney may have had a dog on the roof of his car, but Obama had one on the roof of his mouth.

Someone commented on the propaganda picture of Bo in the limo with President Obama: “In hindsight, a chilling photo.”

  12. @Ray Beverage

I didn’t leave it off though….the Broken Apple. I just need to go in and fix the street name. all the better that it’s Battle Street, for symbolism.

  13. Boys….the dog talk is over. If you want to discuss gross, go read up on the subject in Stephen Ambrose’s Undaunted Courage. It has a lot of that subject. The entire corp of discovery enjoyed that entre.

  14. Cato the Elder

Are you trying to tell us we’re barking up the wrong tree?

  15. SlowpokeRodriguez

” This isn’t good for Obama and the left, so it will not be allowed here. Sorry, but it’s the only way we know to control the message. “

  16. SlowpokeRodriguez

Where would you like to eat, Mr. President? I know a great Spot!

  17. @Cato, probably not. I just don’t want to barf. Go read about the Corp of Discovery.

  18. Cato the Elder

Did you know there’s a Lewis and Clark cookbook?

  19. SlowpokeRodriguez

So now our military is going into Syria? How many Nobel Peace Prizes do you have give a guy before he stops getting into new wars?

    1. In what capacity? now that is worthy of conversation.

  20. SlowpokeRodriguez

An expanded role. They are apparently modeling it after the Egypt operation. As far as I’m concerned, we didn’t have the money to spend in Egypt, and we don’t have the money to spend in Syria.

  21. No we don’t have the money to be at war anywhere. From another vantage point, how is Syria threatening our security?

  22. SlowpokeRodriguez

    Moon-howler :
No we don’t have the money to be at war anywhere. From another vantage point, how is Syria threatening our security?

    Good question!

  23. Need to Know

    @SlowpokeRodriguez

Slowpoke and Moon – I could not agree with both of you more. We need to mind our own business. Syria threatens us in no way. We can’t afford any more nation-building adventures. How about this compromise between liberals and conservatives? We cease all current nation-building in countries that don’t threaten us. The savings will be used for deficit cutting, tax cuts, and social needs here at home. Something for all Americans of all political stripes (except those who enjoy meddling in other people’s affairs).

  24. Syria doesn’t.

In fact, many of the “rebels” are actually foreign Sunni fighters from Saudi Arabia. If they win, there will be no increase of freedom and liberty. Modernization may even be reduced. Christians, now able to worship freely, will be persecuted and killed.

This is tribal warfare, Sunni vs Alawite. Wahhibbism vs secular totalitarianism.

Its just sad that there are so many caught in the middle that MIGHT want a better life.

  25. Second Alamo

As long as we keep those who do want to cause us trouble out of our country, then things should be fine. That means deeper background checks on individuals that will probably cause the liberals to scream foul even though it’s for our own safety. You can pick any border you like.

  26. Cindy B

Ray, I’m the only one in my family who’s not an Apple user…yet … maybe that’s why I missed this new microenterprise. It’s great to see a young entrepreneur move in with a high tech, earth-friendly business next to the ladies Eve, dispelling the myth that KKs will attract seedy businesses. Unless it’s appleseeds 🙂

  27. Today’s allergy levels for MANASSAS, VA:
    Friday – 10.5/High

    Today’s predominant pollen:
    Maple, Oak and Poplar/Aspen/Cottonwood.

  28. I reserve the right to change my mind if I read about genocide anywhere.

SA, you would be surprised to learn about who week keep out of our country. Our immigration laws are incredibly stupid and self-defeating.

Don’t believe all the bull crap you read from FAIR. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to our immigration laws and that is why we need reform immediately.

  29. SA, the case I am thinking of right now is a a successful teacher here with her family. She is from central Europe and would like to remain here. Excellent evaluations, etc.

Why wouldn’t we want to extenbd her visa or allow her to adjust her status?

  30. One Secret Service Agent balked at paying the high price named by a Cartegena call girl, which created a ruckus, which brought a scandal to light.

And so they fired him for good cause.

I say, “KEEP HIM!” and promote him! He’s the only government servant that’s trying to CUT SPENDING!

    😉

  31. SlowpokeRodriguez

“I tell him baby, my cash money!”
I’m getting a bumper sticker made!

  32. SlowpokeRodriguez

Anyone else watching the Zimmerman bond hearing? So far the prosecution is pure emotion and no facts. Makes you wonder what they got that’s going to support murder 2.

  33. Nasty. now George Zimmerman is being bullied by the prosecutor. Geez. This is not helpful.

It seems that all reason has gone from this case.

    @Pokie

I don’t see the relevance of the questions. Mine is delayed. I put the TV on pause. This is a bond hearing, for goodness sake.

Isn’t this where they are supposed to decide if he is a flight risk or dangerous to the community. That should be it.

He really was bullied. That’s too bad. I don’t care if he is granted bail or not. I would not do it because of the danger to him.

  34. SlowpokeRodriguez

Even CNN analysis agrees with me, that the prosecution looked pretty bad. So far, everything is going pretty much as I would expect. We’re not at trial yet, but I’m really doubting they have enough for murder2.

  35. SlowpokeRodriguez

Where are my Sarah Palin haters?? The Secret Service agent said he was “checking her out” duriing the 2008 campaign.

  36. @slowpoke

Why should I care if the secret service agent was checkng her out?

  37. Saying it, though, is unprofessional. But, at least he way eying Palin….
Now if it had been BIDEN…..

  38. Second Alamo

Zimmerman’s head injuries for all those nonbelievers:

    http://www.wftv.com/photo/news/local/graphic-photo-george-zimmerman/pSGsK/

    1. @SA

What does that prove? Does that prove that he didn’t shoot an unarmed kid? As far as I am concerned, the rest is up to the courts. I don’t have a side. I just don’t think you shoot an unarmed person and get sent home that night. That was my issue. There was a real problem with how it was handled.

  39. Second Alamo

Woah, wait a minute here! It PROVES that his story of self defense is plausible having sustained several head injuries just as he stated to the police. It also shows why there wasn’t any blood on his shirt or elsewhere. If your head is being pounded into concrete just how long do you think it would take to suffer eventual brain damage, or death? We have all the time in the world to discuss what-ifs, but then it wasn’t our head being pounded. He wasn’t sent straight home, he was taken to the police station and questioned. Based on the evidence at the sean (the photo supports his story), and eye witnesses, the police felt that it was indeed a case of self defense. What would you have charged him with in order to hold him further? Second degree murder? I don’t think so. How many murderers call the police before, during, and after an act that could put them in jail for the rest of their lives? Think Think Think about it!

    1. SA, why is it that you insist on Zimmerman’s innocence? Wouldn’t you rather have the facts come out?

That doesn’t explain why someone who is on top of you doesn’t bleed out on your shirt which you pump a bullet in their chest but why bother with logic and facts.

I don’t know if he is guilty or not guilty. I just know you don’t send someone home when there is a dead unarmed person. I also know you don’t keep a body for 3 days when the cell phone is right there.

  40. Second Alamo

oops, that’s scene not whatever it is I typed.

  41. SlowpokeRodriguez

What’s interesting here is to see the Martin’s behavior. They SAID all they wanted was for Zimmerman to be arrested and stand trial. I think it’s clear to everyone now that they won’t be satisfied with anything but life sentence or the death penalty. Who’s got the crappy job of explaining to them that the death penalty isn’t an option?

    1. Slowpoke, part of me agrees with you and part doesn’t. They have lost their child in a most senseless, unexplanable way. They are working through a process. Let’s cut them some slack for a while. Their hearts are broken now and it appeared that no one really gave a crap. their child was kept on a slab for 3 days. No, that’s not George’s fault. They are broken now. Let’s let them start to heal before we throw them to the wolves.

  42. Second Alamo

The media created this horrific story of a young innocent black boy being chased down and shot dead for no apparent reason, and now they will be hard pressed, along with all those parading around, to substantiate their claims. Perhaps this will teach some a lesson in the dangers of jumping to conclusions, as they say Zimmerman did that night. If Zimmerman gets off he should place a bounty on the head of that A-hole from the NBP.

  43. SlowpokeRodriguez

    @Moon-howler
I’ll absolutely grant you all of what you said. I’m not saying that the Marins would be wrong to want practically anything for Zimmerman. I get it. It’s everyone else that are busy wagging their tongues around this family making statements about what they want and what they don’t want. I’m saying all of this poorly. Let me put it this way…the ones who have been inciting and race-hustling and putting bounties on people’s heads are not going to be satisfied with anything less than the death penalty. It’s not really about Trayvon’s parents, who, if they wanted revenge, I couldn’t say that I blamed them.

    1. @Pokie, all that bounty business needs to stop also. Those ass-hats are trouble anyway. I am not real thrilled with the martin’s lawyer at this point. He said a few things I dind’t like today. But he has a job to do.

I honestly believe George made a horrible mistake. He had gotten in over his head. Unfortunately, his horrible mistake cannot be undone. I blame the Sanford police or whoever was advising them for bungling this case.

That’s one of my problems with amateurs and guns. They get a false sense of security. Gun problems take nano seconds to be executed. By then it is just too late. One of my best friend’s son is in jail for killing someone. He isn’t a killer. He made a horrible, stupid mistake that he simply couldn’t take back. It took less than a second to perform a life altering act. Several families will never be the same and 2 children will grow up without a father.

What is an amateur with a gun? Perhaps that is what we should be discussing.

  44. marinm

    @SlowpokeRodriguez

    The Marins????? You mean martins.

I don’t want ‘nothing’ except for people to leave our gun laws alone or to further protect self-defense laws.

Interesting bond hearing. The prosecutor went pure emotional argument. I actually have been enjoying

Below from Canada Free Press but you can find it on almost all of the far-right sites.

Professor Alan Dershowitz of Harvard Law School stated upon release of the arrest affidavit that it was “so thin that it won’t make it past a judge on a second degree murder charge … everything in the affidavit is completely consistent with a defense of self-defense.”

After the release of the photo, however, Dershowitz went much further, telling Breitbart News that if the prosecutors did have the photo and didn’t mention it in the affidavit, that would constitute a “grave ethical violation,” since affidavits are supposed to contain “all relevant information.”

Dershowitz continued, “An affidavit that willfully misstates undisputed evidence known to the prosecution is not only unethical but borders on perjury because an affidavit swears to tell not only the truth, but the whole truth, and suppressing an important part of the whole truth is a lie.”

When asked if it made a difference whether the prosecution had the bloody photograph at the time they charged Zimmerman, Dershowitz responded, “We do know that there were earlier photographs before the affidavit was done that strongly suggested blood on the back of the head, and we know the police had first access to him, so if there was blood they [the prosecution] would know about it …

“I’ve had cases in Florida against prosecutors,” Dershowitz said, “and this is not the first time they have willfully omitted exculpatory evidence. It’s a continuing problem. Here, it’s not only immoral, but stupid. The whole country is watching. What do they benefit from having half-truths in an affidavit?”

Dershowitz added, “I’m not taking sides, but I’m insisting that both sides play by the rules, and so far the prosecution is not playing by the rules.”

  45. SlowpokeRodriguez

Martins, yes….that was an unfortunate omission of a letter.

I can’t believe it!!!! A storm must be coming to town.

  47. Good for the teachers who showed up at Candland’s town hall meeting the other night. A local blog owner obviously thinks that his concern s are more important than the local public employees who haven’t had a step increase in 3 years.

At any rate, they have as much right to speak as the next guy. If the people of the Gainesville District can’t afford to pay a few dollars more in taxes to the schools, perhaps they need to downsize. Those same teachers who often live outside of PWC because of expenses have to buy that same $4.00 a gallon gasoline. they have bills to pay also.

There is some sort of faulty thinking that public employees should always suck it up and take the first hit. If there isn’t enough money for supplies, then teachers should provide out of their own pay. WRONG.

I have always found that people who always bitch about the schools and teachers are usually people who had unpleasant school experiences themselves. Hmmmm…I expect this case would also bear my theory out.

Hmm, man I screwed #57 up good and proper!! The storm is coming tonight, I hear. This will be interesting in Florida, but if the prosecution screwed up as bad as I think they did (we have to wait for the trial to know for sure), then I hope someone is disbarred for bringing frivolous litigation.
