A Virginia Republican delegate who led the effort to defeat the nomination of a gay Richmond prosecutor to a post on the general district court defended his opposition to the nomination, questioning how he would rule in the case of a “bar room fight between a homosexual and heterosexual” and added that “sodomy is not a civil right.”
Speaking Thursday on CNN, Bob Marshall said, “You could preside as a district judge for a marriage of two guys if he wanted to, in violation of the law.” He continued, “Moreover, if you have a bar room fight between a homosexual and heterosexual, I’m concerned about possible bias.”
Marshall makes no attempt to hide his bias. He pronounced to CNN: “Sodomy is not a Civil Right.” Marshall immediately proved that he does want government in people’s bedrooms. Does he worry that in that same fight he described, a heterosexual judge might be biased? I believe what we seek in a judge, regardless of level, is for that judge to be impartial.
The Lady Justice is often pictured holding the Scales of Justice while blindfolded. Wikipedia states:
Since the 15th century, Lady Justice has often been depicted wearing a blindfold. The blindfold represents objectivity, in that justice is or should be meted out objectively, without fear or favor, regardless of identity, money, power, or weakness; blind justice and impartiality.
Sideshow Bob Marshall’s attempt to justify his outright prejudice doesn’t fly in Virginia. He might have sealed his own political fate this time. I don’t believe the people of the 13th district are all prejudiced people who ignore a man’s job performance as a prosecutor because of their own bias against gays. Marshall has called attention to himself nationally. The 13th might just have its own Stonewall uprising next election and I don’t mean Stonewall Jackson, if you get my drift.
Marshall’s minions continued to make their political calls and one poor woman was unfortunate enough to get Mr. Howler on the phone yesterday. Mr. Howler launched into his usual diatribe against the senatorial wannabe claiming that Marshall is a single issue voter . The lady tried to tell him that Mr. Marshall wasn’t a single issue voter and that reproductive rights were just part of the Republican platform. Mr. Howler begged to differ. Finally the woman hung up on him before he could even get to the fact that Marshall had embarrassed the state of Virginia by being openly prejudiced against gay citizens. Most of us forget that he is running for Senate. What a joke.
What will Sideshow Bob do for his next act? I am meanwhile thinking of all the money that is going to pour into the 13th next election to defeat Marshall. Whoever runs against him will have money to burn. If I were a king-maker, I would run an Independent actually. That person won’t need party money. Elena, will you be busy in about a year? Carl? Ann?

“Moreover, if you have a bar room fight between a homosexual and heterosexual, I’m concerned about possible bias.”
Couldn’t this same thing be said about a hetrosexual judge?
“sodomy is not a civil right.”
Why is this man so obsessed with sexual acts? Hey BM, NO one wants YOU in their bedroom.
Oh, I catch your drift on the Stonewall uprising. 👿
This man is such an embarrasment to our district and the Commonwealth. When will the people of the 13th wake up? Can’t wait to see him get his ____ beat in the US Senate primary.
Moon, thanks for making me pull my hair out before 9am on a Friday!!!
Oh Dear! The Huffington Post doesn’t approve of Bob Marshall?! Dat’s it for him!
Have you seen the Washington Post? Have you seen Moonhowlings? Why single out Huffington?
Slow, how about sticking to the subject. First of all, I would say that sodomy IS a civil right. Who the hell is the government to tell you what type of sex people can engage in? If you allow gay people to marry then being obsessed with sex is no longer as relevant, they have a codified relationship like the rest of us, based on a legal marriage and all its long term benefits.
I find Bob’s obsession with how gay men practice sex more telling about HIM than anyone else!
@SlowpokeRodriguez
I think it’s a LOT more than the Huffington Post that don’t approve of BM. I know I sure don’t approve of his actions.
@Elena
I’m total agreement with your last sentence.
The protest signs ought to be a hoot!!
No…was it good?
So, instead of the holding-hands-singing-“We shall overcome” civil rights marches…we’ll have this:

Totally inappropriate. I am tattling to Elena.
Moon,
I am too afraid to look at the youtube link!
don’t look. I might take it down.
THAT was funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Moonhowlings is very very good. The utubelink is not.
I have the tune on my iphone. The artist is DJ Assault…..the title is…well, you can imagine..
Back on track. I can see that Bob Marshall’s fan club is on insidenova.com, on facebook.
One person has stood up for him, outta about 40.
Bob, your bigot is showing! put that bad boy away.
The fight is pretty good on the dark screen also. A few good remarks. Too many over there seem to obsess about “practices” rather than principles. What would Freud have to say about that?
@Chris
““sodomy is not a civil right.”
But it’s not exactly against the law either. I’d challenge “turkey-baster” Bob to point out where any sexual activity is a “civil right”, enumerated in the Bill of Rights.
I can understand the arguments for and against same sex marriage. One side has tradition on their side, the other social progress. But what does that have to do with what two adults of legal age and undiminished capacity do in private.
And what, praytell, does this have to do with appointing a judge?
@Oy Vey
It absolutely NOTHING to do with one’s ability to rule on our laws.
Remember, Del BM doesn’t believe in one’s right to die with dignity either. He sure got a PW Circuit judge dragged into that debate. The man just wants to invoke his beliefs on the rest of us. I sure wish the voters would quit sending him to Richmond. I’m new to his district, and it truly makes me cringe to think that this is supposed to be MY representative. I can only think of a couple of issues I would agree with him. Clearly, I want him and his laws off my property, out my house, out of my bedroom. The man is clearly out of touch with those of us living in this century.
Nothing to do with appointing a judge, Oy Vey. I just don’t oppose things that don’t hurt me. For instance, if men want to wear kilts, unless they bend over, why should I care. If they bend over and I have to see butt, then I care.
It is often hard to break with tradition. I remember many years ago when we were looking for a new church. It was Christmas eve and the spirit moved us. We went to a mission church that I just discovered in the paper. Well, we went and made our way through the crowd to seats where 4 of us could sit together. As soon as we got settled in I realized that the husky voice of the pastor was a woman. I ended up loving that wonderful lady but I wish you could have seen the look on our faces. She was one of the first batch of female Episcopalian ministers who had been ordained. It was way cool once I got used to it but tradition stood in my way for a while.
I am glad I was open minded enough to put tradition in its proper place. Otherwise I would have missed the wisdom and special mission of a really wonderful lady of the cloth. Don’t both the traditions we are talking about pretty much come from the same place?
@Chris
Chris, I think he comes from a very traditional catholic background, unlike most of the Catholics I know in my life or have been related to. that being the case, that is his religion, not mine. Mine is far removed and I don’t want his anywhere near me.
You and I have both dealt with deaths of parents and I can promise you, if I could have relieved my mother’s suffering, I would have gladly done it, with her blessing. I would have bodily thrown him out of her room if he interferred.
I have never met someone quite so keen on intruding himself and government into people’s private lives, their bedrooms, their death beds, etc. I want to live and let live, or live and let die, if that is the will of the person.
I can’t think of anything I agree with him on except the senior center.
Speaking of intruders….I just found my pictures of Randy and Randall. The second Randall is Randall Terry. 🙄
@Moon-howler
My sister and I both married men raised/educated in a very traditional Catholic style. So, we are right there with you. Add to the fact we three ladies were brought up in the same protestant religion. 😉
There’s been one more thing we’ve agreed with him on, but I don’t recall what it is. At least we do give him and Cooch credit, when and where it’s rarely due. That’s less than a handful between the two of them.
Please, email me that picture. Randy & Randall, classic. If you can’t email. I’d gladly take a signed copy with just one signature.
@Chris,
Once I scan I will do that. I can’t make this computer talk to the scanner. I am going to have to do something else. Not sure what. You will die laughing.
@chris, mine had an Irish Catholic mother but….a Congregationalist father who insisted his kids go to public school because he paid taxes.
Vote against openly gay judicial nominee another black eye for Virginia
By Brian Schoeneman
Excellent post over on Bearing Drift.
Brian’s thread is worthy of a salute from this Virginian. He is taking some heat on some of the conservative blogs.

Jackson Miller stated on Bearing Drift that the military speeches convinced him to vote no.
I thought he abstained. Sorry Jackson. Those military speeches were the biggest bunch of drivel I have heard in a long time. Thorne-Begland received an honorable discharge from the military. Period. Some retired colonels are notorious blow-hards and the dudes from Prince William are no exception. Who cares what retired colonels think? My eyes glazed over a minute into each of their speeches. Their opinion has no relevancy as to whether Thorne-Begland is qualified to be a General District Court judge or not.
I wish Jackson Miller had thought for himself. He knows right from wrong. I would like to think that he considered the facts through his own eyes rather than through retired colonel-ese which I have often found to be devised to obfuscate and confuse.
Note: Not all retired colonels fit this description but many do and that includes many I had to work with. Oh Dear God–the self importance.
