Great National Parks theme will be here for the next few Open threads.  This one should make the Twilight fans happy–2nd Beach, near La Push Washington.  La Push is home to the  Quileute tribe and  is part of  Olympic National Park.   Think Team Jacob/Werewolves.

Olympic National Park is totally neat and covers the northwest corner of the United States.  It truly is mountains to the sea in a very short distance.  The pinnacle of the park is Hurricane Ridge.  The drive up there from Port Angeles is not for sissies. There are definitely some white knuckle heights and turns.   From there you can see across the Strait of Juan de Fuca over onto Vancouver Island.

ONP includes ocean, temperate rain forests and several native tribes.  Both the Ho andn Quinault Rainforests are there.  The each get from 10 to 15 feet of rain per year.

Olympic National Park  is a great vacation spot, especially if you take in the old lodges like Crescent Lake Lodge and Quinault Lodge which I highly recommend.  Be sure and have some razor clams while you are there.

Here, you lefty nuts talk to me about civility in political discourse! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the subject!

While the Obama White House prosecutes and persecutes whistleblowers at a rate that exceeds all prior administrations combined, they continue to selectively leak information when it suits their political interests. There’s a good story by Salon’s Greg Greenwald on how the Obama team worked with Hollywood friends to give them inside info on the Bin Laden raid by Seal Team Six just in time to do a movie that was supposed to come out right before the November election.

    1. Yea but did he land on an aircraft carrier with a parachute stuffed in his uniform?

  3. Steve Randolph! Where are you? You need to go out there right now with your bear slaying sword and lay waste to bears. They have us surrounded. Go out and kill!!! Bring the bulls to stomp the bears to death.

  4. Watching

Is everyone aware there is a meeting on the new Gainesville library tonight at the evergreen firehouse at 7 pm? (wednesday)

    1. No. Wonder why it is so far out. If they want attendance, then perhaps a more central location might be better.

      I know…grouse, grumble….

  5. Steve Randolph

M-H, Maybe this time it isn’t a bear market, but a big bad snake one?
    Not good either way.

Victory for the little guy against our oppressive government!!

    http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-05-22/news/os-flashing-headlights-ruling-20120522_1_ryan-kintner-free-speech-headlights

A judge in Sanford ruled Tuesday that a Lake Mary man was lawfully exercising his First Amendment rights when he flashed his headlights to warn neighbors that a deputy had set up a speed trap nearby.

    1. I rather like that one. I wonder who has the time to take it to court though.

  7. Rick Bentley

Saw “Battleship” last night. Good, fun movie. Good one to take kids or grandkids to.

  8. SlowpokeRodriguez

I just clicked on my link from elsewhere and I still get the right link of union thugs beating a Nicky Haley Piñata. I was aware of the black snake from last week, but I can’t get a browser to pull that link up wrong. ???

    1. It told me it had been disconnected and to go watch it on youtube. I got more interested in the snake. Just call me Eve.

Beating a Nikki Haley pinata? I guess that is better than beating her. Did they do this in public or private? Public, probably a dumb move. Private? who cares.

@Morris Davis Destroying the administration’s own deniability of the drone attacks is among some of the more egregious actions of this immature, look-at-me, football-spiking president. It’s a head-scratcher.

  10. marinm

    @SlowpokeRodriguez

Does beating a visage of a female conservative elected officials count as a war on women or just a woman ought to be beat? I’m trying to understand the unions message here.

    1. What does burning a president in effigy for you? Apparently it gives some folks a great deal of pleasure.

  11. marinm

    Free speech. Repulsive but speech.

I have to assume you are referring to the many burnings of Bush, like this one:

    1. You should have been around for Johnson and Nixon and Jimmy Carter. @Slowpoke

Its all one big blur. You see one, you see them all. No one says they are in good taste.

I disapprove of it regardless of who the president is but no one asks my permission.

OK, I watched. Amateurs against the pros. Those are idiot kids.

So, let’s see what’s #1 on the NYT best seller list. Oh! It’s a new book about Obama called “The Amateur”.

  14. Morris Davis

    @SlowpokeRodriguez

Here’s the NYT top 5 in all categories and I don’t see it. Are you guys making up “facts” … again?

    http://www.nytimes.com/best-sellers-books/overview.html

    1. The price just dropped to $4.95 from $23 something. It must be burning up the shelves!!!!!

You get to also be a card carrying member of the “I hate Obama Club” Woooo Wooooo

No, I’m just a bit ahead of things. The publishing house announced today that the book will debut #1 on the June 3rd list. So you are right, it’s not there…….but just not yet. But don’t worry, any book that exposes Obama as the Amateur he is is sure to be a hit with the public.

    1. I think it is the triple quote that puts you in there. That would be my guess. It wasn’t the use of my unfavorite word in life. You had no way of knowing.

  16. SlowpokeRodriguez

[ redacted ] Shouldn’t have included the link in my response. Got nailed in moderation.

  17. SlowpokeRodriguez

Well, Morris, I’d answer, but I’m in moderation.

  18. How about that Scott Walker recall? That probably wasn’t the smartest move. Now he is a cult hero instead of just being a public employee bully.

Analysts say that sort of thing works best in an off year.

  19. On Morning Joe this morning, Virginia was declared the most important state in the nation as far as the presidential race goes.

Early polls show Obama 48, Romney 44.

  20. What? They’re wrong!

Virginia is the most important state in the nation.

    There. Fixed.

    1. Are you trying to insert LA in its place while I am not looking?

    1. Steve, you are right. It does make sense. Too many people wearing American flags on the seat of their pants get bunched up every time they hear immigration reform. It seems like nothing will ever get done because the lame brains are running the politicians.

The Scott Walker thing has me in stitches.

I think Politico said it well:

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0512/76698.html

“Democrats leapt at the chance to use Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to send a message to all the budget-cutting, union-busting conservatives across the land: If you mess with Big Labor, there’s a heavy price to pay.

But if you shoot at the king, you’d better not miss.”

Conservatives should really heed this message. People want change. They want a more conservative government. They’re tired of Big Labor and Big Government. Let’s FIX things. We need more people with rocks to take on the entrenched special interests of Big Labor, Big Education and Big Government.

  22. One immigration chance we missed was the reversion of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. We should have pulled up with every ship we had and said, ” Anybody want a lift?” There’s nothing wrong that 2 million Chinese entrepreneurs can’t fix.

And there would have been the added benefit of China getting an empty rock.

  23. @marinm

Big education? Now I have heard it all.

I can’tt wait for you parents to need some math and science teachers.

You will be singing your own version of ” where have all the flowers gone” except use the words math teachers, science teachers, french teachers.

I would not use the word “Democrat.” It was a statewide movement. Regardless, it sent a strong message back, regardless of outcome.

Most Americans don’t want to appear to be rubes. Walker supporters do.

  24. Walker’s budget is now 1 billion in the black. The state did not have to fire a bunch of people. He’s very popular.

Apparently those being backed by the out of state unions, whose jobs were not threatened by a lack of money, are the rubes.

Oh and by last count, as of November 2008, at least 63.7 million people didn’t mind appearing to be rubes.

    1. I wouldn’t say he was very popular. He might be popular with like minded people but not with a good cross section of people. He has been way too devisive.

I am not sure h0ow he got in the black since many of his ‘reforms’ haven’t gone in to effect yet. Must be cooking the books.

I am curious about this Nov. 2008 number. Walker didn’t take office until 2011.

lets both be honest and admit that Wisconsin has never seen so much out of state money. Much union money has poured in and Much conservative money has poured in. Anyone not admitting that isn’t an honest person.

the doctors, nurses, teachers and firefighters do feel that their livelihood is at stake. That is the problem.

The worst thing that has happened to all of those people plus their colleagues across the country is the nasty attitude towards them. They have rough jobs to do. They don’t need to be devalued as people.

?Sadly there will come a day that there simply will be too few teachers for this country. We are already importing teachers and will have to import more. They can stay for 3 years. Some are excellent. Some, not so good.

Critical shortage areas now: math, science, foreign language, speech. Not only are people missing content, They will also need the proper certification. All of that which I have mentioned counts as advanced studies past the BA or BS.

    2. Doesn’t Wisconsin have to have a balanced budget, same as Virginia? He should have a budget in the black. Virginia does, regardless of whose hide it comes out of.

  25. I’m sorry. That Nov 2008 election was for the national election at the time…… 🙂

I thought you would catch that.

I have to correct that statement. Not 1 billion in the black. He saved a billion dollars in taxes and has a 154 million surplus. He went from about 3 billion in deficits to the surplus.

I based his popularity on the returns of the primary where he got, in a primary in which no Republican had to vote, more votes than the top two Dem candidates and more than all of the other Dems combined until Madison was counted. He was behind the entire Dem field by only a few tens of thousands of votes.

And he’s currently up in the polls. So, it seems he’s popular.

  26. I think he is popular with Republicans and a demon with Democrats, especially union Democrats.

Nationally…He seems to be a cult hero and as for national Democrats…they would probably say they hated him but wouldn’t send money, if that makes sense. I think the union charge is where most of the money is coming from. Things might be different in a year with no presidential election. But…it is what it is.

Would I send money? No, I support them in spirit but I am not a strong union person. In my mind, this case is an anomoly. I see him as a bully. However, I don’t want to swap for union vs right to work state. Does that sound like a conflicted answer? It probably is.

  27. @Cargosquid

I was jokingly accusing you of trying to replace Virginia with Louisiana. Isn’t the abbreviation LA?

  28. SlowpokeRodriguez

I could be wrong, but I’m thinking Buffett may have finally gone soft in the head. He’s convinced that “free news” is unsustainable? If his appetite for newspapers actually pays off, I’ll gladly take my hat off to him…..but man, he sees something I don’t see!

  29. @Moon-howler
I didn’t know if you were commenting on Los Angeles for some reason.

Virgina is better than Louisiana. Louisiana, or at least, New Orleans, has more fun and better food, but everything else is better here.

  30. Romney/Petraeus 2012?

    http://pjmedia.com/tatler/2012/05/23/could-a-romneypetraeus-ticket-be-a-game-changer/?singlepage=true

Interesting idea. However, we have no knowledge of Petraeus’ politics.
