This is part 1 of American Experience film of George H. W. Bush.  You can watch the entire video at PBS also.  George Herbert Walker Bush turned 88 June 12.  The former president has become a much admired former president; he has grown on us.

Tomorrow there will be an HBO presentation starting at 9 pm called 41.  It talks about the life of George H. W. Bush.  President Bush said his proudest moment was having that aircraft carrier named after him.

4 Thoughts to “Happy Birthday President George H.W. Bush”

  1. I met him when he visited the base in Qatar on a surprise visit. Got a hug from Mrs. Bush.

    Nice people.

  2. I have always admired her a lot also.

  3. Need to Know

I second Cargo’s remark. Many years ago when I was a college student I attended a foreign policy conference at the Citadel in South Carolina where not yet President Bush was the keynote speaker. After his presentation I ran into him outside the building where we were meeting, with Barbara by his side, and they stopped and spoke with this nobody college student. I told Mr. Bush that I had a question and he wrote down his address for me. I wrote to him and he responded. His reputation was for answering, and personally signing his responses, everyone who wrote him.

This man is a class act, and a true war hero. Not only that, when he entered the White House he was more prepared from his life experience and education to be President than most of the people who have held that office since Lincoln. We need more like him.

I’ve always thought that Reagan brought our nation out the malaise of the 70s (Nixon and Carter) and restored our spirit, and that George Bush was one of the keys in ensuring that it all worked as it should.

  4. People overlook George Bush’s time spent in the CIA also. He had an excellent reputation for meeting with middle management and really rolling up his sleeves. He was involved and not an untouchable.

He deserves our respect, in my opinion. Too bad we had to bump him to get Clinton.
