Congress manipulates Wall Street

House of Hypocrisy

Congress manipulates Wall Street and passes legislation to prevent other branches of government from doing it.  Typical hypocritical Congress.  Both sides of the aisle are guilty of padding their own pockets by what appears to be the use of insider information.  From the Washington Post:

One-hundred-thirty members of Congress or their families have traded stocks collectively worth hundreds of millions of dollars in companies lobbying on bills that came before their committees, a practice that is permitted under current ethics rules, a Washington Post analysis has found.

The lawmakers bought and sold a total of between $85 million and $218 million in 323 companies registered to lobby on legislation that appeared before them, according to an examination of all 45,000 individual congressional stock transactions contained in computerized financial disclosure data from 2007 to 2010.

Fast and furious comments Part 2

We have avoided fast and furious because it immediately went to conspiracy theory mentality, the minute it hit the news stands. It made little sense and really shouldn’t have been escalated to being a conspiracy theory. the Obama administration has done nothing to address control. The idea that because you aren’t doing something means you are doing it just doesn’t fly.

Congress meanwhile in an attempt to undo the Obama administration has found Holder in contempt of Congress. Shame on Congress and shame on Rep Issa for his lack of real leadership. Again, our money is being wasted. Pardon me while I lose even more respect for Republican congressmen.

Mainstream Republicans want far away from this bad boy. Conspiracy theories piped in on people’s filings shouldn’t be used to hold Eric Holder hostage. Additionally, part of what Issa has demanded from Holder is not even legal.

There is no proof that Holder, Obama or anyone else is “anti gun.” In fact, Obama has gotten an F from gun control groups. However, with these tin foil ‘break their windows’ folks, even though the has been no mention of gun control, that must be a reason to do it. Totally insane.

How much money will be wasted to hold Attorney General in contempt of Congress? Millions? How fiscally UNconservative.

A little college news…..

UVA-

Washington Post:

McDonnell (R), who had repeatedly resisted involving himself in the escalating troubles at the state’s flagship university, sent a stern three-page letter to the Board of Visitors late Friday, nearly two weeks after the ouster of President Teresa Sullivan.

The board has called a special meeting Tuesday to discuss whether to reinstate Sullivan. But McDonnell said if the 15 voting board members cannot make a decision at that meeting, he will ask all of them to resign. If they refuse, he will remove them for cause, a power granted to him by state law but rarely used.

The Invisible War: Opens Friday, June 22

Last year the Defense Department confirmed that there were more than 19,000 incidences of sexual assault in the U.S. military.  The assaults were on both men and women  in equal numbers, according to the film makers.  The men were less likely to report and much less inclined to be interviewed.

Leon Panetta has instituted new rules which is a place to start.  Part of the problem has been that victims reported within the chain of command.  Chain of command has led to more and more people simply not reporting crimes against them because of the reaction of some of the superior officers.  Some trrops have even lost rank, suffered ridicule, or even more degrading responses.

Why would anyone run for public office?

Yahoonews.com:

Mitt Romney’s five sons — a staple on their dad’s campaign trail — made perhaps their biggest stop yet: on Conan O’Brien’s TBS show.

Wearing helpful name tags, Tagg, Matt, Josh, Ben and Craig Romney–the closest thing the GOP has to a boy band–sat Wednesday for an interview with O’Brien, who asked how they felt about their father’s 2012 White House run and the prospect of a President Mitt Romney.

Constitutional Amendment to overturn Citizens United?

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) has introduced a constitutional amendment directed  at overturning the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision on campaign finance. The amendment would also overturn a Supreme Court decision that struck down an Arizona law that allowed public financing of a candidate if their opponent exceeded certain spending limits.

Is this a good idea? Or would it be the first constitutional amendment since the 18th, allowing for prohibition of alcohol, which would restrict freedoms and liberties rather than enhance them – in this case free speech?  What have been the down sides of Citizens United?

Open Thread…………Summer Solstice……………Wednesday, June 20

Summer Solstice at Stonehenge
It’s officially the longest day of the year.  In Pagan terms, its when the Holly  King overpower the Oak  King and after today, the days will start getting shorter.
Meanwhile, it is only fitting that the heat goes up to close to 100 ° today since it is the first day of summer.
We will resume looking at national parks after this brief interrupion.  Meanwhile, stay cool.  I just don’t go out when it gets this hot.  Does anyone have any secrets for staying cool that they want to share?

That Rascally Sheriff (of Nottingham)

The new kid in town, the Sheriff of Nottingham, is no longer such a newbie.  He seems well entrenched.  I find myself getting up each morning to see what he has in store for us.  Yes.  He is entertaining and I think he is probably what every local government needs.

The board of county supervisors is a body very used to scratching the backs of each other.  They will stab but when it comes to deal cutting, you can pretty much count on cooperation…to a fault.  Then there are the pay backs.  This one and that one will contribute to campaigns.  Corey always has something going so he is probably  has the most expertise at this shell game.

Cousin Michelle

What an amazing find. Many southerners have black relatives. It’s just a fact of life. For many of us, just the slavery issue is difficult. I don’t think I have white guilt because I didn’t own slaves. I don’t think I have white guilt over killing Indians either. I didn’t kill any Indians. However, not personalizing the guilt doesn’t mean that we don’t wish things had been different.–very different.

In the case of  Michelle Obama’s ancestors, the white relatives don’t really know if the union was concensual, forced, or “dutiful.” None of the choices are good. Of course, they will never know.  That’s a pretty difficult thing to have to acknowledge.

Time for a Vote of No Confidence from the PWC Taxpayers?

It is very tempting to call for a vote of NO Confidence  directed at the BOCS from the taxpayers  for allowing last week’s debacle to continue regarding the amendments attached to  Pete Candland’s resolution.  However, No Confidence votes seem a bit melodramatic and are pretty meaningless.

I would hope that those amendments were repealed or rescinded today before the minutes are approved.  Let’s see if the Board of County Supervisors has the integrity to do so or if they are just going to allow Jenkins and Stewart to jerk them around.

What a bogus bunch of crap Angela Horan handed down.  Surely you all don’t believe those “amendments” were germane?

UVA to bear the cost of the Dragas-bungled ouster

Governor Bob O’Donnell is giving himself another black eye. This time it is for dodging the issue at UVA.  Not only has McDonnell dodged the issue, it is he who appointed the leader of the ouster,    Rector Helen  Dragas, from a mere post on the Board of Visitors to the University Rector (chairman of the BoV).

Dragas has bungled her attempt to overthrow popular President Teresa Sullivan.  42 Department chairs have taken a stand against her behavior.  The Faculty Senate has condemned her and the Board of Visitors  in support of Sullivan.   Student and faculty protests and demonstrations have been ongoing since the announcement of Sullivan’s ouster.

Mitt won’t commit to a stand on immigration

Bob Schieffer tried for all he was worth to get Mitt Romney to go out on a limb over President Obama’s policy to allow good students to get work permits and driver’s license.  Romney continued to dodge the bullet.  Amazing.  Romney will not commit to specifics.

What is it that he would do with the Senate preparing to filibuster? Romney needs to be far more specific on this topic if he is to pull in Latino voters. He needs to specify what he would do especially dealing with a congress that wants to stonewall  the Dream Act.  Does think Romney think that Obama’s recent policy  was the first choice? This is not the first time Obama has mentioned immigration as it pertained to youth people who are out of status through no fault of their own.

As for “securing the border,” that is a sound byte. The border will never be secured. We cannot put a dragnet around our entire country. What Romney must have really meant was to erect concertina wire and electric fences along our southern border to keep Hispanic illegal immigrants out. During the Obama administration border crossings have diminished each year.  I don’t think for one minute he meant our northern border. Its time for people to start going on record and to stop hemming and hawing. We have all sorts of kids whose very lives depend on people to stop hemming and hawing.

Yes, Obama issued a stop gap measure. Good. It is an emergency measure.

BOCS attempts to kill jobs

After digesting the gobbledeegoop from Corey via  County Attorney Horan, I have come to the conclusion that the Board of County Supervisors are just job killers.  All the BS and blather from Corey  Stewart about attracting jobs and business to PWC is just that, BS and blather.  We still haven’t forgotten all the jobs lost from the double dealing with Eric Finley’s asphalt plant  Now we have Pete Candland attempting to hire office staff.   Mr. Candland was attempting to hire one Reece Collins.  He apparently doesn’t need him full time.  I expect if he did however, the BOCS would find some new amendment to throw at him to make that job creation unacceptable.  The BOCS, in essence, outlawed hiring someone with exactly Mr. Collin’s attributes.  Imagine that!

Yet Jenkins and Stewart have both denied that Candland was targeted via Collins.  How strange! You would think then, they would have grandfathered in Mr. Collins if it was totally unintentional.  At least if you are going after someone politically, have the cajones to admit it.

The BOCS might think they have won but they just won a battle.  They will not win the war.  The people of Prince William County will not forget.  The people of the Gainesville Magisterial District have longer memories than most.   I HATE bullies.  Sorry dudes, you were bullies.  You bullied the new kid in town.  You were given a chance to back off gracefully where no one lost face.  You chose not to do it.  One of you could have taken him under your wing like Mike May sorta did, and offered to show him the ropes.  You didn’t.  However, it is patently obvious that one of you all is snoozling up to a disgrntled employee who had to be terminated.  That is never wise.

Only play a tough man’s (or woman’s) game with someone who has as much to lose as you do.
