Sam Donaldson was noted for giving President Reagan, in particular, a rough time at press conferences and other events. However, Donaldson is fairly outraged over the antics of Daily Caller reporter Neil Munro for his crassness and abandonment of decorum during the President’s announcement of changes in immigration policy.
According to Sam Donaldson, in an email:
“I like Tucker (let all flowers bloom) but I really resent his trying to tie his reporter’s actions to mine. He knows better.
Never once did I interrupt a president in any way while he was making a formal statement, a speech, honoring awardees or in any other way holding the floor. Yes, almost always when he was finished in the Rose Garden or in the Briefing Room or at a photo opportunity with other world leaders I tried to question him (only rarely was it a shout on the rope line, more often a more normal tone of voice) and other reporters of course did the same thing along with me.
From the Washington Post:
RICHMOND — Virginia’s Board of Health offered a surprise reprieve Friday to abortion clinics, voting to exempt existing facilities from new rules that would require extensive renovations.
The board’s decision on imposing stricter building requirements is not the final word. Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) still must weigh in on the softened regulations, which had been among the toughest in the nation. His office declined to state an immediate position.
American isn’t the land of opportunity for everyone. For some, it is a land of confusion and mixed messages.
I am speaking of the children of illegal immigrants who were not born in this country. Walk a mile in their moccasins. Often, those kids have citizen brothers and sisters, to add insult to injury. Their brothers and sisters do not share their problems. These kids live in no man’s land. they live in America. They feel like Americans. They go to school and pledge allegiance daily to the red, white and blue flag flying in front of them. They are Americans in every way except one and that is the paperwork.
From here on out note I am referring to Latino kids. Yes, there are other kids but my focus is on the Hispanic population today. Many nay-sayers want to “send them home.” What does this really mean? Most of these kids speak fluent Spanish. We assume that they can also read it. Most cannot. They can read and write English very well but they cannot read Spanish. They also can’t spell in Spanish. It’s not something you think about. Unless they have been taught, it just isn’t something intuitive. So where do they go?

Horan’s response (click)
That Sheriff of Nottingham is certainly prolific. He has another post up. Apparently the letter has been drafted and has been sent to Mr. Candland, addressing at least one of his questions that relates to Reece Collins, the fired staffer. First off, Ms Horan explains the roll of her position. I thought in light of past “corrections” of my explanation, I will lift hers from the Sheriff and post it here:
“The overarching duty of my office is to protect the legal position of the County. That includes the duty to defend adopted resolutions of the Board, where there is a legal defense to be made in the judgment of a competent attorney. My primary client is the Board, or in a case different to this one, where the Board is no unanimous, the majority of the Board, on any particular issue. Individual Board members are not the client. So, there are intricacies to providing legal advice to an individual Board member when that member seeks guidance on the implementation of Board action with which he or she appears not to agree. As I advised you in our phone conversation I believe your first letter fits into this category.”
I interpret that as a SCREW YOU citizens from the Board of Supervisors, delivered by their attorney.
I actually thought some of the other verbage posted by the Sheriff was a joke. Now I am not sure.
A reporter from the Daily Caller heckled President Obama during his speech in the Rose Garden about lifting deportations on young illegal immigrants with good grades. This policy clarification changes no laws, it just prioritizes immigration policy and defers deportation for young folks who meet certain criteria.
Meanwhile, what is wrong with society and with press decorum? When would it ever have been acceptable to heckle the president of the United States? Hopefully the Daily Caller will lose all of its press privileges at the White House. The man’s behavior was rude, crude, and socially unacceptable. Any president, regardless of who is in office, should not be treated rudely.
PWC isn’t the only place with secrets and stench. On Sunday, the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia blindsided the entire University community with the announcement that they had asked President Teresa Sullivan to resign, after only 2 years. Sullivan is the first woman president at U.VASullivan was popular and innovative and the faculty and stuff is outraged. Dr. Sullivan knew nothing of her job being in jeopardy and the Board of Visitors has been very secretive about her ouster. According to the Hook.com:
Just four days after University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan was ousted in what many are calling a coup by a small faction of the University’s Board of Visitors and a cadre of Wall Street-oriented alumni, the state’s flagship school has been thrown into chaos, and a key figure in what’s become a national headline-grabbing fiasco has resigned his position as chair of the Darden School Foundation Board.
From the Washington Post:
RICHMOND — Circuit Court judges have appointed an openly gay prosecutor to the bench just a month after the General Assembly rejected his nomination.
Tracy Thorne-Begland’s appointment to the city District Court judgeship is temporary, lasting only until the next General Assembly session.
The move by the Circuit Court is likely to revive the emotional debate over gay judges that consumed the legislature on the last day of session. It infuriated Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William), who along with the Family Foundation of Virginia helped convince the General Assembly that Thorne-Begland was unfit for the bench.
Perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all the National Parks, at least at first glance. I will never forget the first time I saw the Grand Canyon. It literally took my breath away that anything that magnificent existed. No picture will ever do it justice.
I was always very resentful of the book on Grand Canyon proprty that said the Grand Canyon was only 6,000 years old. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR. While scientists have not agreed on the exact age of the Grand Canyon, those of the fighting takes place over how many millions of years old it is. Scientists love to fight with each other.
Apparently political insanity isn’t limited to Prince William County. It appears that the lunacy has also struck the good councilmen and women of the Town of Haymarket. To encapsulate the situation, several months ago, the town attorney quit, abruptly. The council had to hire a new one. Who ended up getting hired? The very one who quit. Meanwhile, as of July 1, a new council is seated. They want no parts of the old quitter attorney so they will no longer be in need of his services. The cost to the people of Haymarket? Oh, around $30k in severance package.
Below is the letter sent to the people of Haymarket and the BAR by responsible members of the town council who are totally embarrassed by the entire situation.
Where are the ethics?
An Apology to the BAR and the Residents of Haymarket
In Haymarket’s long history, June 4, 2012 will likely go down as its lowest point since the burning of the town in 1862.
As the result of the town attorney’s abrupt resignation in March, the town council appointed an interim town attorney and issued a Request for Qualifications to all interested in assuming the office. An appointment was to be made by the new town council on July 2.
The Sheriff of Nottingham reports that today we might get a ruling on Pete Candland’s request for information on his 3 questions. An earlier report from Kipp Hanley at the News and Messenger on June 12 informed us:
In his letter to Horan, he asks three things: a formal opinion to the board stating that Jenkins’ additions regarding political consultants and vendors are not part of the county’s personnel policy and would be superseded by state code. He also asks that Collins’ termination process – which he states he began based on Horan’s previously issued opinion – be rescinded.
Finally, Candland states that if Horan doesn’t agree that Jenkins’ additions supersede state code, he would like to have a formal reason for her opinion and hints at a possible lawsuit for an “improper termination.” He also asks that she remove herself from any potential litigation given the fact that she “had determined they [amendments] were a legal action of the board.”
This is part 1 of American Experience film of George H. W. Bush. You can watch the entire video at PBS also. George Herbert Walker Bush turned 88 June 12. The former president has become a much admired former president; he has grown on us.
Tomorrow there will be an HBO presentation starting at 9 pm called 41. It talks about the life of George H. W. Bush. President Bush said his proudest moment was having that aircraft carrier named after him.

Don’t make plans for a going away party yet. Reece Collins might not be going anywhere. I never understood why he wasn’t grandfathered in, but I am not a lawyer.
Supervisor Pete Candland wants to know 3 things from County Attorney Angela Horan. Ms Horan might be on leave. However, here is the latest from insidenova.com: (bold mine)
Gainesville Supervisor Pete Candland has sent a letter to Prince William County Attorney Angela Horan asking whether 11th hour amendments to the recent discretionary fund resolution passed last week by the Prince William Board of County Supervisors will result in an improper dismissal of Collins.
It should not come as a shock to learn that we are not comfortable with accusing our elected officials of financial malfeasance. I have seen no proof of actual wrong-doing. I have not been looking for it. I have seen some quantum leaps taken on various blogs to “prove” things that to me, haven’t been proven. The more those hiding on blogs finger point, the more uncomfortable many of us who are now siding with Mr. Candland will become. I can’t imagine that Candland would be comfortable with these accusations either. His resolution contained no finger pointing, only solutions to problems residents have been grousing about for decades.
Today the Sheriff has an expose that is more on supervisor analysis than on pointing fingers and calling out people over supposed transgressions regarding discretionary funds. I am glad to see the accusations stop. However, I particularly enjoyed him taking the chairman to task because I agree. The Chairman bungled the entire episode on June 5. I have no beef with the supervisors other than they voted yes on Jenkins’ gotcha rocket docket amendments.
Sister Simone Campbell represents nuns who have gone rogue. Sister Simone particularly has gone after Congress for its neglignence of the poor. Stephen Colbert thinks she has been to a wimple burning party.
Meanwhile, another nun talks back. Sister Anne Curtis explains how American nuns went from being the good girls of the Catholic Church — the very epitome of faithful — to the subject of headlines around the world calling them rebels.Read More
