Turn in a supervisor for doing something of benefit to county.  I am serious.  Stop snickering.  Steve Randolph just left us with the names of the 4 Horsemen from 1972 along with their misdeeds.  After those evil clowns, our current guys don’t look half bad.  I went looking for something good to report and immediately saw something very helpful on Maureen Caddigan’s website.  She has a list of the various committees, advisories and the like as well as those she has appointed.  What a great idea!

http://www.dumfries.com/AppointeeList

I wish all the supervisors did this.  Its all part of transparency.

Meanwhile, meet the 4 Horsemen and their misdeeds.  Thanks Steve!!

The “Four Horseman” took office 1-1-1972.
(The Potomac News applied the name soon after)

They were:
– Scott Winfield (Coles), Chairman
– Don Turner (Neabsco), Vice-Chair
– Ralph Mauller (Brentsville)
– Roy Doggett (Manassas)

What did they do to earn the title of the 4 Horsemen?

Not part of the group:
– A.J. Ferlazzo (Dumfries)
– Vernon Dawson (Occoquan)
– Chuck Colgan (Gainesville)

On the first day in office they, in part:
– Fired the County Executive of 15 years, N.C.Sharp.
– Ousted all the School Board members, except one.
– Ordered the locks changed on the county office buildings.
– Named Doggett’s son, John Roy, to the School Board.
– Named Tuner’s boss, Doyle Davis of Jean Davis Realty, to the
Planning Commission.

Help us out here.  Report a supervisor for doing the right thing!

  1. Mom

    Looking for a Supervisor “doing the right thing”, that is so full of double entendres I don’t know where to start. You couldn’t possibly meaning doing something with someone clad in leopardskin could you?

  2. Mom

    Let me re-phrase that, “Doing” someone clad in leopardskin.

  3. Elena

    Love this, thans steve randolph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. SlowpokeRodriguez

    What? No thread where we can blame each other’s political ideologies for the Batman Shooting?

  5. I see no point in that, Slowpoke. There will be enough time for that later.

  6. @Mom

    It is difficult to slip something past MoM.

  7. Need to Know

    Fired the County Executive? OK, OK, I won’t say anything.

  8. Surely I am not the only person who can find something positive to say about a supervisor.

    You all are letting me down. Did you vote?

  9. And interesting book review on why politicians sound the way they do, especially progressive ones. Its long, but it and the comments are worth it.

  10. Steve Randolph

    “Stunned and bitter, Supervisor A.J. Ferlazzo called the actions,
    ‘four dictators in collusion’, and said it was ‘the blackest day in
    county history’. Ferlazzo is a four-term board veteran.”
    (Prince William Newsletter 1-4-1972)

    Note there is now a PWC building named for A.J. Ferlazzo.

    1. I vaguely remember him. “four dictators in collusion” seems like calling it like it was. I remember Doggette bragging about the 5th grade education–forever.

      Steve, keep on with the stories. This is like old home week.

  11. Steve Randolph

    Off topic, but FYI today’s WaPo real estate section
    (E6). Market Trends PWC Jan. thru March – 2011 vs. 2012.

    – The number of homes sold in PWC and the cities was about the same ,
    1513 to 1521, and the median price went up $6,110 (2%).

    – Zip Code 20110, mainly Manassas City, the median went up
    $20,000 (9%) .

    1. Maybe I should try to get my zip code changed?

  12. Watchful

    Stories I have heard include the fact that, during the reign of the 4 Horsemen, the BOCS meetings were advertised in the Warrenton newspapers, rather than those in PWC so our residents wouldn’t know what was going on. That way they could meet the letter of the law in ensuring that the meetings were being duly advertised, but were still able to make sure no locals would know what was on the agenda. If anyone was able to find out about a meeting and wanted to attend, they would show up at the old Manassas Courthouse, where the meetings were then being held, only to find all the doors locked.

    Also, on the firing of the county exec, they reportedly waited until he left the room to go to the rest room during a board meeting, quickly held a vote to fire him, and voted to hire a new person to replace him, and the new guy was sitting in the former co. exec.’s seat when he returned from the restroom. Classy!

    I sure wish someone would write a book about this or that Senator Colgan would do an interview on the actions of the 4 Horsemen when he was a member of the BOCS. It would be a best seller, particularly during an election year.

    1. What a great idea!! Who can call Chuck and tell him his services are in great demand? Watchful, welcome. You have brought some good ideas.

      I don’t remember all that but it could very well be true. I know the 4 horsemen were pretty scary to the young crowd. Let’s put it this way, I was in a group of people who just didn’t want to attract any attention!!

  13. Steve Randolph

    Watchful – you have the basics right according to the news media
    of the time. It appears though, that switching to out of county papers
    to print public notices was primarily a financial stab at the
    Potomac News. The Gang didn’t care for the PN shining a spotlight
    on their actions.

    Here’s a link to a WaPo obituary honoring Herbert Vogel who with his wife Dorothy and an average guy’s salary managed to amass an outstanding art collection much of which they bequeathed to the National Gallery of Art. They could have sold this collection and lived comfortably as millionaires but instead left the rest of us their riches.

  20. By the way, did you guys know that Penn State has removed the Paterno statue?

    1. No. I didn’t know that and I think it is horrible. Just horrible. Sunday morning. It sickens me. Living proof that one “awe shit” can ruin a thousand atta boys.

  21. marinm

    I think it was wrong that the statue got torn down. What a shame.

    In another thread there was a discussion about a clash of ‘rights’. I think this one is a real world example of a clash.

  22. Need to Know

    @Steve Randolph

    Steve – thanks very much for this link. I had not seen this publication and am reading it with great interest. It shows the double-dealing and conniving of developers and the BOCS going back a long way.

    Have a look at this map:

    http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/online_books/mana/map1.jpg

    The area between Rt. 29, I-66 and what’s now the University Blvd bridge over I-66 is virtually identical to a scheme Corey and his developer pals are cooking up now. The main difference is that they plan to extend Rt. 234 through rural areas in Prince William and Loudoun Counties to the west of Dulles Airport to open up more land for development – the “Road to Nowhere” Corey and the others are plotting. If they get away with all of this, congestion will be more horrific than it is now, and the new residential development will both raise tax rates and increase congestion in the schools.

    Moon – sorry, but I don’t have anything positive to say about the BOCS. This link about the Battlfield Park just goes to show that the backroom wheeling and dealing, and corruption go back farther than we had been thinking.

    1. NTK, are you telling me you cannot find just one supervisor who is doing 1 thing you like? Geez what a grinch.

      I thought you were singing the song of Saint Peter these days. Surely he is doing 1 thing you like?

  23. Chris

    @Need to Know
    What year is that map you posted from?

  24. Need to Know

    @Chris

    That map is included the online book Steve linked.

  25. Chris

    @Need to Know
    That explains why it looked so familiar. It really is amazing to see how things really haven’t changed that much in planning regards. Really, when will this county ever get it’s act together in this regard?

    1. It didn’t seem familiar to me at all. Too many years. Plus I got confused between Marriot and Disney.

  26. Need to Know

    @Chris

    When voters wise up and understand how developer and other special interest money buy the elections in this County. That means also stop listening to the BS and spin we’re fed from sitting members of the BOCS, and from the County Executive’s office.

  27. @Mom

    At the risk of sounding vulgar, how about me not answering that question. I am making a facial gesture at you though. Well, sort of a facial gesture that involves tongue in cheek, so to speak. 👿

  28. Mom

    @Moon-howler
    For some reason the phrase “The Horror, The Horror” kept resounding in my head.

  29. Need to Know

    @Moon-howler

    Yes, you are correct. I have an admiration for Peter and what he’s been doing. I was thinking in terms of the usual suspects. I guess I was mentally segregating Peter from the rest of them. I still like Mike May too. However, Mike has been trying too hard to get along with the others lately. Sometimes you have to put your foot down regardless of what other people think.

    Peter has still not proven himself on development issues yet. That’s where the true test will come. The structural deficits that the residential projects Corey and his developer pals want will overshadow the amount we’ve saved by abolishing the slush funds. Peter needs to be aware that he has not passed all of the tests yet to be fully on the side of the taxpayers rather than special interests.

    1. Now NTK, all I asked was 1 think someone was doing right. I found one thing. I went to Dumfries to find it.

    I’m surprised that anyone in the NE would have the man sack to even think about this?

    http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/07/22/some-humarock-residents-discuss-seceding-from-scituate-in-bonfire-dispute/

    Gotta love how Americans are starting to drop the f-word more — not that word — ‘fascist’.

    This part sounds like good ol’ NE unionized law enforcement to me.

    Langlolies described his experience with law enforcement on the 3rd as overkill. He claims he was playing patriotic music when town officials marched onto his private property and unplugged his stereo. Langlolies says an officer then crushed the plug to keep him from starting the music again.

    “They told my wife, ‘we’re going to come back to clean this mess up. We’re going to charge you $300 an hour and we’re going to take our time doing it,’” Langlolies recounted.

    1. @marin, you apparently have never been there. Testosterone is definitely not lacking.

He’s now attacking McCain as a “numbnut” and saying McCain has gone over to helping the Muslim Brotherhood. Bachmann is going to have to throw down a load of crazy if she’s going to hang with Gohmert … he’s in it to win it.
