Michael Mann threatens to sue National Review for comparison to Jerry Sandusky

From politico.com:

Penn State University global warming researcher Michael Mann is lawyering up to counter attacks by conservatives who have referred to him as the “Jerry Sandusky of climate science.”

Mann’s lawyer wrote Friday to National Review Executive Publisher Scott Budd demanding a retraction and apology for a July 15 blog post that compares Penn State’s mishandling of years of child sexual abuse to the university’s investigation of “Climategate.”

The charged reference to Sandusky, the convicted child molester and former assistant coach, originated with a July 13 post on the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s blog, OpenMarket.org. The National Review Online post quoted from a now-deleted line by CEI’s Rand Simberg, who wrote: “Mann could be said to be the Jerry Sandusky of climate science, except that instead of molesting children, he has molested and tortured data in the service of politicized science that could have dire economic consequences for the nation and planet.”

Gun show loop hole-caught in the act

Its pretty difficult to justify all what has been caught on camera.  Its pretty embarrassing to see our governor making up excuses for private sales after first acting like he didn’t know it happened.  The reporter is Jim Hoffer.

Why are there private sales going on?  Why is this behavior allowed?  This video  was filmed a year and a half ago.  Nothing has changed to shore up the loophole.

Why aren’t Virginians howling over being the illegal gun capital of the east coast?  Probably because they do not know they are.

The remains of a once proud icon

In what has been described as a “knee jerk reaction,” Sunday morning officials at Penn State tore down the statue of Joe Paterno with no warning to the town or university.  Today, the entire Penn State football team awaits possible sanctions from the NCAA.  According to Politico.com:

The NCAA came forward to say that it will levy “corrective and punitive measures” against the school. The sanctions will be spelled out Monday, the NCAA said without disclosing further details.

NCAA President Mark Emmert hasn’t ruled out the possibility of shutting down the Penn State football program in the wake of the scandal, saying he had “never seen anything as egregious.”

The Paterno family issued a statement saying the statue’s removal “does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky’s horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State community.”

“We believe the only way to help the victims is to uncover the full truth,” said the family, which vowed its own investigation following the release of an investigative report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found that Paterno and three other top Penn State administrators concealed sex abuse claims against Sandusky.

Fantacize about a real news show? Miss the West Wing, Aaron Sorkin?

If you want a great news show and you miss Aaron Sorkin and the West Wing, go to HBO and watch The Newsroom.  I have quickly become addicted.  There are plenty of great lines, as only a Sorkin production can offer, plus you get to pretend that there is a real, decent news station, even though there isn’t really.  The show deals with current or semi current events.

I can’t say enough good about it.  I rarely like anything but its worth subscribing to HBO just for the Aaron Sorkin fix.    The Newsroom isn’t for everybody.  It is definitely counter-Faux News.  The leading man , Will McAvoy really is an impressive character, moderate Republican, but a man with principles.

Each week gets better.

Another new show is Political Animals on USA.  Its pretty good also.  It is somewhat of a take off on the Clintons at times.  Sigourney Weaver plays the Secretary of State.  She is a former first lady and she is divorced from her husband.  Sound familiar?

Its a decent show with lots of twists.  Political Animals.

Rep. Louie Gohmert blames movie theater carnage on attacks on Judeo Christian beliefs

Huffington Post:

WASHINGTON — Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said Friday that the shootings that took place in an Aurora, Colo. movie theater hours earlier were a result of “ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs” and questioned why nobody else in the theater had a gun to take down the shooter.

During a radio interview on The Heritage Foundation’s “Istook Live!” show, Gohmert was asked why he believes such senseless acts of violence take place. Gohmert responded by talking about the weakening of Christian values in the country.

“You know what really gets me, as a Christian, is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and then some senseless crazy act of terror like this takes place,” Gohmert said.

“Some of us happen to believe that when our founders talked about guarding our virtue and freedom, that that was important,” he said. “Whether it’s John Adams saying our Constitution was made only for moral and religious people … Ben Franklin, only a virtuous people are capable of freedom, as nations become corrupt and vicious they have more need of masters … We have been at war with the very pillars, the very foundation of this country.”

Ernest Istook, the host of the show and a former Oklahoma congressman, jumped in to clarify that nobody knows the motivation of the alleged Aurora gunman. Gohmert said that may be true, but suggested the shootings were still “a terrorist act” that could have been avoided if the country placed a higher value on God.

Where is Pat Robertson when we need him?   Someone asked for the blame game to start.  Well, here it is.   I offer your Louie Gohmert.  Gohmert also wondered aloud why no one took down this gunman.  Does he really think a shoot out would have been the answer?

Turn in a supervisor for doing something of benefit to county.  I am serious.  Stop snickering.  Steve Randolph just left us with the names of the 4 Horsemen from 1972 along with their misdeeds.  After those evil clowns, our current guys don’t look half bad.  I went looking for something good to report and immediately saw something very helpful on Maureen Caddigan’s website.  She has a list of the various committees, advisories and the like as well as those she has appointed.  What a great idea!

http://www.dumfries.com/AppointeeList

I wish all the supervisors did this.  Its all part of transparency.

Meanwhile, meet the 4 Horsemen and their misdeeds.  Thanks Steve!!

The “Four Horseman” took office 1-1-1972.
(The Potomac News applied the name soon after)

They were:
– Scott Winfield (Coles), Chairman
– Don Turner (Neabsco), Vice-Chair
– Ralph Mauller (Brentsville)
– Roy Doggett (Manassas)

What did they do to earn the title of the 4 Horsemen?

Med Student Launches ‘Cooch Watch’ To Combat Virginia Attorney General’s Anti-Abortion Agenda

A medical student launched “Cooch Watch 2012” to combat Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s anti-abortion agenda.  It takes a few good women (and men).

http://coochwatch.com/    The link will be on our blog roll.

A group named “Cooch Watch” after Ken ‘The Cooch’ Cuccinelli just launched to fight back. They aim to stop the attorney general from forcing his will on Virginians. Medical student and former abortion clinic worker Stephanie Arnold is leading the group of about 10 women. Arnold said on a call today that Cooch Watch plans to “attend Mr. Cuccinelli’s public events, ask questions, protest, and remind Mr. Cuccinelli that he is being watched” and will be “held accountable for his actions”:

A rally was held to greet the Attorney General.  (see video)  Please note that we are aware that there is spoof involved.  How else does one work against someone as foolish as Ken “Cooch” Cuccinelli?  He might want to change his name to something other than “Cooch” after he sees the video.

Publications around the state and the nation have spoken out against Cuccinelli’s refusal to certify the recommendations of the State Board of Health who was tasked to come up with regulations.  They wisely chose to grandfather in existing regulations so as to not present an undue burden on existing businesses.

Boehner, McCain exibit class, defend Huma Abedin… Michele Bachmann, not so much

Michele Bachmann has done everything in her power to convince the American people that she has no class.  Bachmann has written letters to at least 5 inspector  generals calling  for an investigation of  Huma Abedin, top ranking aid to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and wife of former Congressman Anthony Weiner.  Bachmann alleges family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.  One such link cited is Huma’s father, who has been deceased for 2 decades.  Ms. Abedin is an American Muslim.

Many top ranking mainstream Republicans have recoiled in horror at Bachmann’s suggestions that Huma is anything but a loyal American  and have publicly denounced the Congresswoman’s allegations.

Senator John McCain defended Huma Abedin on the floor of the Senate:

McCain said on the Senate floor: “Huma represents what is best about America: the daughter of immigrants, who has risen to the highest levels of our government on the basis of her substantial personal merit and her abiding commitment to the American ideals that she embodies so fully.”

John Boehner and Marco Rubio also got in the act of defending Huma.  Most decent people are horrified that such accusations are being thrown around about a women that most people respect deeply.  There has been no regard for fact or fairness.

Its good to see decent Republicans calling out the clown squad in their party.  They set a good example in doing so.  Its time for more of this to happen.  In the long run, mainstream Republicans will be the winners.

Chairman Stewart attacks resident from the dais

I am appalled that any elected official would speak down from the dais in such a nasty tone to a private citizen. This man, Jeff Bergman,  was polite and was simply voicing his opinion. He insulted no one. He expressed his concern and his wishes for his community.  He spoke as a resident and a father.  For his efforts he was bellowed at, insulted and berated by our elected chairman.

NO private citizen should be afraid to speak for fear of being publically upbraided by Corey Stewart. Corey, you owe this man an apology!  He was there to let the BOCS know his community’s feelings about the Catharpin Park.  He was polite and respectful.  He was treated rudely.

I also expect you probably don’t care more for the park site being discussed than anyone else in the county. You were an obnoxious, bloviating, blowhard drama-queen who owes  Jeff Bergman,  the gentleman who spoke, an apology as well as  the entire Gainesville District an apology.

Learn some manners.  We don’t talk to each other like that here in Prince William County.  This is still the South, son.

No one here is your whipping boy. SDASTFU!

Anti-Gay Dan Cathy, COO Chick-fil-A, to address PW Chamber of Commerce…expect deep chicken doo doo

An excerpt from  writing in the Huffington Post in an opinion piece entitled:  Chicken With a Side of Bigotry: Chick-fil-A’s Ungodly Business Plan:

… but it seems Chick-fil-A’s president (and son of founder S. Truett Cathy), Dan Cathy, has gotten himself into some deep chicken doo-doo for proudly and loudly declaring himself “guilty as charged!” for his support of that great Christian umbrella of homophobia, the “family values and traditional marriage” platform. Yep, he’s a believer. And not only has Mr. Cathy blathered all the usual fundamentalist talking points (i.e., “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit,” and “…thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”), but his company has reportedly put their big money where their bigger mouth is by donating nearly $2 million to anti-gay groups.

That’s a whole lot of intolerance.

Ok, I am pretty entertained.  But what’s this article have to do with Chick-Fil-A?  I like their nuggests as long as I can get about 5 packs of house sauce to go with them?  What?  Repeat that please….No Way!!!!  Check out the video:

Ok, I still don’t see the problem.  So this guy says some things not so politically correct.

Ut Oh!  Local people are protesting!   No! Tell me  again!  It seems that the Prince William Chambers of Commerce will host  an event at Hylton Center with COO Dan Cathy at a business lecture in November:

Mark your calendar and register now for an insightful lunch with Chick-fil-A President & COO, Dan Cathy. Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to learn the leadership secrets of a Fortune 500 executive– this will be Mr. Cathy’s only appearance in the mid-Atlantic region this year!

Join us…

Tue., Nov.  27; 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

@Hylton Performing Arts Center

What ARE they thinking?   Maybe the PW Chamber of Commerce needs to walk this one back.  Too much exposure.  Too politically incorrect.  Then again, this is Prince William County.

Shrug.

UPDATE:

Will you still eat at Chick-Fil-A?  (WaPo story)

No smoking at county pools? Less government interference please!

Oh dear God.  More government trying to regulate the private lives of citizens.  Is there no end?  I must be turning into Marv Marin in my sleep.

I have had several communications this morning from citizens expressing outrage over a proposal made during Supervisors Time to end all smoking at county pools.

Currently, smoking is limited designated smoking areas at each pool center.  This  plan, instituted under Parks and Rec directive, sounds like a  good plan.  Adults smoke.  Life guards smoke on break and parents also smoke.   As long as they smoke away from the general population, outside, let’s just leave it alone.  Yes kids see them.  So what.  Kids see all sorts of things, including old men in speedos and women with beer guts in bikinis.

If smoking is forbidden, fewer parents will bring their kids to the pool.  In the long run, this means less recreation and less exercise for kids.  If smoking is forbidden, people will be checking in and out of the pool area to go for a quick smoke.   Wasn’t a young mother just arrested for not attending to her kids supervision?  I believe she was charged with neglect because she went out front to sign in her friend.  Well….a smoking ban will force more people to take their eyes off their kids and sneak outside the parameter for a quick smoke.
