UPDATE:

opening of the Manassas Office of the 2012 Obama/Biden campaign

Time: Saturday, August 11, 2012 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Location: Trusler Hall, 9411 Main Street, Suite 101, Manassas, VA 20110 (next to Philadelphia Tavern)

The Romney event begins at 3:45.  I heard a rumor that there will be an Obama Shadow bus coming to town also.  Everyone ought to be good and stirred up.

The LOVE sign will stay.

The Olympics have been thrilling for the United States.  We are ahead in number of medals in all and number of gold medals.

Last week was exciting.  We had a full week of Olympics, hot weather, and news that the BOCS plans to raise its middle finger at all of us and do what they damn well please.  We have every indication that the Candland Conflict of Interest Resolution will be shot down like a wounded quail by the County Attorney.  Somehow it is against the law to tell supervisors they can’t vote on things that ….oh never mind.  Ms. Horan says it best:

“To the extent that the proposed amendment would bar a member of the Board of County Supervisors from casting a vote on an issue when that member is otherwise fully empowered by the Code of Virginia to vote, the amendment exceeds the Board’s legal authority and should not be adopted.”

Let us not forget, Ms. Horan is an employee.  Employees are supposed to do what they are told.  Hmmmm…I wonder who told her to make that outrageous statement?  Did she just make conflict of interest invisible?

105 Thoughts to “Open Thread………………………………………………..Sunday, August 5”

  1. Nothing’s wrong with polling Hispanics. Its in the poll. But the Hispanic vote leans Dem so more polling of Hispanics will slew the poll.

But, I agree. Polls like this are really useless.

    1. @Cargo, if the polls are conducted correctly, they should provide a snapshot in time.

I have a problem with the fact that so many people have invisible cell phones only. How much do we think that throws polls off?

Who just has a cell phone and not a land line?

  2. Those who want to do away with Medicare should seriously think about Paul Ryan. I wonder how well he will do in Florida.

Ever since I heard that he was the chosen, I thought about my grandmother. I was young..and she misunderstood a conversation that I was having with someone else. She came racing in the room like a Jenny wren and told us that if we were trying to take away her medicare she would slit our throats.

The conversation had not been about Medicare. I don’t know where THAT came from and I was still a kid and Medicare was very new.

  3. How much does it cost to tie up a naval ship like that? Are they actually on it?

  4. The jilted one is introducing Ropmney. You can see the disappointment in his face. grrrrr

What a nasty thing for Romney to do. Here Bob, here is the consolation prize. You get to introduce us.

  5. Paul Ryan:
“The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand,” Ryan said at a D.C. gathering four years ago honoring the author of “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead.” …

Quick, someone tell him that those books were fiction.

I am an XFILE fan. Its fiction. All fiction. So is West Wing. That’s about like me saying I am pro choice because of the Hand Maid Tale. Not even close.

  6. Cato the Elder

An Obama shadow bus you say? Oh goodie. My middle finger needed some exercise.

Moon-howler :Does the school board really spend that much less time than the board of supervisors spend? It would be interesting to compare compensation. How much do the supervisors make? I can’t remember. Its easier to ask than it is to research it.
I would rather pay them more and require more of them.

I don’t know about the Supervisors, but here in the fair City, our Council Members get around $16K, plus reimbursement for any official City-related travel. Mayor (I think) is something like $22K. Those are off the top of my head. Keep in mind though, for office support, the Mayor and Council members do not have individual Staff Offices and employees – the three fabulous ladies in our Clerks office supports those 7 elected folks.

My guess for the Supervisors (without research) is they probably are also around similar numbers BUT do have Staff offices with full time/part time employees.

    @Moon-howler
    Well, Moon, you know how well those naval ships lend themselves to important messages;
like the end of the war, for example. What does the state of Wisconsin to put up to equal that?

What was the music they played when Ryan came strutting down the gangplank anyway?

    1. I can’t remember. Can you just rent a prop like that? I think the USS Wisconsin is a museum battleship and owned by the City of Norfolk.

Shoot, it looked like Romney just had access to a US battleship that was still commissioned. That was deceptive.

  9. SlowpokeRodriguez

Ryan must be a good pick. The left is picking almost non-stop on the almost nothing they have to go on. Post #6 is one half-step away from “He’s a poo-poo-head.” This ought to be good! And what do you have to go up against Ryan? Joe Biden.

    1. Good for them. that’s what they are supposed to do.

  10. Starryflights

Is Cargo making up polls now? It was Fox News poll showing Romney getting his butt kicked. That’s why he picked Ryan. They are getting desperate and needed a big play.

  11. SlowpokeRodriguez

You may have your poll, I’ll sit over here with Obama’s 43% approval rating and giggle at you!

  12. Giggle away….I am watching all the seniors and near seniors flock to go vote for him so their medicare can get poofed into a voucher system.

Why does Romney have a death wish?

I will grant you though, Ryan is more presidential than Sarah Palin. @Slow

@Starry, help won’t be coming in from the seniors, I don’t think.

  13. Tom Brokah is doing a special tonight on Channel 4 @8 pm on Winston Churchill.

  14. Punchak, the music was from the movie Air force One.

  15. Lyssa

What do I have against Paul Ryan – THE KOCH BROTHERS like him.

  16. That’s a good place to start. How do you like what he proposed to do to Medicare, Lyssa?

  17. Lyssa

In addition to thousands of people living off the government many businesses also derive their income from the government either in goods and services or consulting other business through regulations.

I’d rather see increased investigations and penalties put into regulating health care providers and hospital corporations from bilking Medicare. Yes Medicare needs change but I don’t think only poor people, the elderly and disabled are ruining this country.

Greed and bilking are first cousins – many work very hard toward both.

Many of us are neither but we sure pay for both. I heard Romney say more jobs mean higher income and more taxes. We’re giving our money to both.

At this point I really don’t like either – to generalize I should pick between the greedy sob’s or the welfare crew. I don’t see much difference.

Bummer! Went out to see the Perseids shower, but the view was clouded out, and now we have rain showers that are quite unwelcome this evening. Maybe we will have some clearing in the pre-dawn hours, but it doesn’t look promising.

  19. kelly_3406

Dammit …. Still clouded out. GOES imagery shows some cloud breaks approaching from the south. Will go check again in 15 minutes.

    1. were you ever able to see anything? @LKelly

Think the Perseids will still be flaming some tonight? It is supposed to be clear.

  20. Morris Davis

Now that Romney and Ryan have stood for photos on the deck of a battleship, they have more military experience than they’ve got foreign policy experience. Maybe they can stage a campaign event at Epcot Center and create a faux foreign facade.

  21. kelly_3406

@MH Nada. Did not see a thing. You’re right …. Tonight should be better, but it means starting off the week sleep deprived. Oh well, life is short …..

Got a good view of Mars through our small backyard telescope earlier in the evening though.

    1. I will definitely try to watch tonight. At my age, sleep deprivation is a way of life. I can always sleep the next day.@Kelly

@Ellen, can I crash in your driveway? Maybe I will just stop on in Silver Lake. Get my damn money’s worth.

Smart phones and ipads should make tracking these puppies easy!

  22. WARNING! Regal Movie Theater requires ID for some movies.

Regal Movie Theater is doing the great rip off these days. My 17 year old granddaughter went to Regal last night to see The Campaign. She bought tickets and concessions. Then when she went to enter the theater, she was denied admission because she didn’t have an ID. The theater made $24 off of her.

If there was an ID required, it should have been posted. Even more to the point, she shouldn’t have been sold a ticket. The time to find out you need ID is not when you are entering the individual theater.

  23. punchak

24 bucks to go to the movies!!!!
Bring me the smelling salts, please.

    @Moon-howler
Agree with you. Can’t understand why ID wasn’t required at the time of ticket purchase.

    1. $24 bucks for 2.

The Theater in Centerville, Multiplex is far less expensive. I would always go there if given a choice.

Gdaughter doesnt drive so I guess that is the problem.

Do you suppose this is a plot to keep Democrats’ votes suppressed? If she had a receipt, I am confused as to how she did not get her ticket money back. Or did she have $24 in popcorn and soda? Oh, and somebody tell me again why I am not supposed to download a movie? Who loses money, again?

    1. @Slow

She bought a ticket. She gave up her stub when she went thru the main gate. She bought concessions. She went to the theater and there was a guard posted checking IDs.

She didnt have hers and could not get in. She couldnt get her money back.

We’re all sitting around in a circle waiting for your to tell us all about Obama’s war-time experiences laying his life on the line to smoke the biggest blunt, or heroically snorting that huge line of coke. Or maybe you’ll tell us of Biden’s daring draft-dodging exploits! We are all ears!

  26. SlowpokeRodriguez

    @Moon-howler
Seems she paid for something she didn’t receive. That is simple theft. They don’t have to let her in, but they can’t keep her $, either. You have to think greedy to keep folks from taking advantage.

    1. Her mother is going to deal with them, Slow. It was just a shoddy way to do business. Not the first time out there. Plus they often have old popcorn from the day before.

  27. The Tank Farm is having an open house.

    http://www.nmaw.org/events/

Our 2012 Open House will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

    1. Are you part of the tank farm, Cargo? I gotta ask about the “our” again.

Is this the tank farm that is donating the War Museum that all of us want to stop the county funding for?

Analysis of voter fraud data. http://goo.gl/j1xPC For every 1 actual case of voter fraud over 6,600 people are shot to death in the US. We waste lots of energy on pretend problems and ignore real ones.
